s2 ep4 ken just started crying in shiv's arms what if i fucking explode with sadness what the fuck her sad "hey.. are you okay" when she realises and the shot of him just crying FUCK
ok everyone else has done a better job than me digging into the horrible nexus of emotion of the succesison s3 finale, but this is something that really stuck with me: the way they shot kendall’s meltdown is so devastingly perfect
And like, one of the basic rules of filming that hollywood movies do is no hats, no sunglasses. they obscure the actors’ faces, and we want to see their expression, right? but Shiv’s wearing a big floppy hat and Roman’s eyes are covered.
And we could have watched this scene happen in a beautiful medieval chapel; we could have filmed it next to a lake, or the mountains, or a castle, but instead it’s in a dirt yard next to trash cans
i listened to an interview with mark mylod (the director of the tuscany episodes) and he said that he and jesse armstrong are always looking for ways to mess with perfection -- in every scene there’s always a little messy detail, something that makes Succession HBO always a little different from other shows, something not-quite-right.
And like, they fucking nailed it!!!! when people cry, we cry in ugly, forgotten places. we sit in the fucking dirt and it stains our trousers. your sibling tries to comfort you except her iphone’s ringing. your other sibling cracks a joke because he doesn’t understand why it’s so serious and you start hysterically giggling under the tears. Someone else nearby is busy taking out the trash and getting on with their lives. i’ve never seen such a devasting but dramatic but mundane scene in a drama before, i’m just -- fuck
Not to get venerable on main, but like- how the fuck do you process this?? Because as hard as it is to admit, I’m not okay- and I doubt many of you are either
