The Roy siblings couldn’t see love (Rava for Kendall, Gerri for Roman, and Tom for Shiv) because they didn’t know what it looks like, which is very sad. And unlike Connor, they never have the distance to see it for what it really is, or to even have the courage or capacity to question it like what Connor did on his wedding day.

They are clearly tortured by it - their incapability to communicate with honesty and detect genuine affection without mistaking it for manipulation or power play - but they’re also stuck in this sick mind game they’ve been basically raised with, which at this point I’m not sure they can ever get out of.

catching up on succession rn and wondering why tf kendall and nate have so much godamn sexual tension

This has been inside my head for too long so I’m going to leave my rant here.

When Logan was still alive, I think Roman is the most like his father. Not because he’s as vile or as politically smart as Logan, but because he’s the most vulnerable. He’s the most desperate for his father’s affection among his siblings, and so he’s willing to do anything to get his approval, including throwing Kendall, Connor, and Shiv under the bus. Ironically, just following along also shows that he doesn’t have what it takes to be Logan’s replacement.

With Kendall, he’s more aware of Logan’s abuse and manipulative tactics, yet he’s not self-aware enough to see that he has some of that qualities himself. He views himself as above Logan. So he did whatever it takes to prove that, and at the same time to prove to Logan that he is in fact capable, which I believe Logan acknowledged when Kendall betrayed him at the end of S2.

Now however, as Logan is no longer physically there looming over them, Kendall has more space and freedom to do what he thinks is right and follow his gut, without worrying whether that move is gonna make him win or lose against his father. Yet, the need to proof himself that he can fill Logan’s shoes is still and always there. And his action shows that he is indeed like his father, too oblivious to see that that is not actually a good thing.

Whereas with Roman, I feel like he’s just lost. He no longer has that figure to hold on to, but he’s still trying very hard to hold on to that, ultimately hurting anyone in his way that is trying to get him out of the dark shadow that he’s grown to be too comfortable in.

Tom's line about Shiv being selfish and "find[ing] it very hard to think about me" is actually so telling because while it's absolutely true that she rarely takes his position into consideration, Tom never once thinks about what he can do to help Shiv unless it also benefits him.

Every single time he makes a move or sacrifice that might help her, it's always something that he thinks will give him a leg up. He volunteers to take the fall for cruises, not for Shiv, who is in no way implicated, or even for Waystar, but because he thinks it'll ingratiate him to Logan, and the second it seems like he might have to actually follow through on that, he immediately tries to get out of it and even throws Shiv under the bus. Meanwhile, for all that Shiv disregards his interests, there are a number of things she does that only help him, and she's the one who actually sacrifices something and undermines her position with Logan to beg him not to let Tom go to jail.

It just makes it so clear that no matter how much he might love her (and I think he does, in his own compromised way), for him their relationship was always built on the underlying assumption that it's her job to prop him up, but it's not his job to help her.
