FRANCE. Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. Marseille. Sugiton calanque. Nude bathing. A calanque is a sort of fjord, not easily accessible by land. 1978.
This photo is like a really good memory for me. I’ve lived in France and one of my best friends is originally from Marseille. He’s gay and I’m a big friend of the gays - he took me to his favorite nude beach, well, actually several of them! He loves to bring his American and British friends, girls and guys, gays and straights, to the nude beach with him. He’s naked all the time, basically! Even when he comes to visit, or when you visit him at home, even when you visit his mom’s home in Marseille! He’s so much fun really, and I miss him. One summer long ago, we stayed with him mom in Marseille and he took me to Sugiton. Not this long ago! But a while ago now. He and my girl and I took a bus from the city of Marseille. I think we had to climb up and up over a big mountain pass and down the other side into the calanque of Sugiton. We wound up, after scrambling and scrambling, on the beautiful beach you see in this photo. Why do us nudists have to suffer so to reach our beautiful spots? But this beach is worth the trek. It was mostly men, but not only men, so my love and I felt welcome. We had a beautiful day in the blazing sun and sea. We gorged on seafood later that night in the port of Marseille, drinking bottle after bottle of chilled Provence wine.
I sent this photo to my friend after finding it online a few weeks ago. It made him sad, as he says almost no one goes to the nude beach at Sugiton anymore.

Marseille and Calanques National Park-
Matt had noticed a restaurant open for breakfast/lunch only called “Emilie and the cool kids” when reading about kid-friendly restaurants the night before, so we decided we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to go there for breakfast. Matt and the kiddos slept in and wandered down there and Becca went on a run and showed up (very sweaty) to meet us there at the end. The kids enjoyed tasty smoothies and pancakes and we got some to-go cookies then headed back to the apartment to get ready for a big day of hiking. We planned to hike in Calanques national park after hearing/reading that it was cool, but were nervous if we would be able to go as we had read that trails were often closed starting in June due to fire danger. They asses the situation every night at 6 pm and post if trails are open the next day or not. We were happy to see the "green means go" on the map of the area the night before (maybe walking from the train station in the downpour was worth it?). We planned to hike to the Calanque du Sugiton as this is the most easily accessible via public transport from Marseille. It was actually fairly easy to get there, we took a metro, then bus out to the Luminy campus, which seemed to be a science campus for a University. From there it was about a 2.5 mile one way hike up over a ridge through a forest, then descending down with views of dramatic white coastal cliffs to a very small beach and swimming area. The beach itself looked a little crowded and tough to climb down to, so we took a slightly easier trail to a big flat rock that people were swimming off of. We then changed into our suits and jumped in (all but Becca, who did not have a suit, which may have been Matt’s fault… and she opted not to go topless in French fashion). Matt and Emily swam out and checked out a small island and then swam back to our rock and jumped off some, with Oli joining that fun at the end. The twins opted not to jump, but did do some wading in a shallow spot where the rock sloped into the water. The views were definitely stunning and even cooler than we had expected. Matt thinks you could show people pictures and convince them it was a greek island. After a couple hours of hanging out, Becca convinced the rest of her reluctant family to start the long slog back up the trail to the bus stop. The kids actually did pretty well despite us running into a water supply issue and having to ration. They were rewarded with ice cream from a smartly located stand next to the bus stop on our return. We then headed back into town, dropped our suits and went to check out a nearby playground, got some take out food and packed for the next adventure before bed.

Aubagne #55
Sebastian & Adrian went to the Calanque de Sugiton today but I had French classes until noon and it would not have been enough time for me to join since it gets dark around 18 here already. Therefore I went to Aubagne, a village close to Marseille ( picture 4). It is impressive to see the mountains surrounding the town and to see how close they are to Marseille. Sebastian & Adrian did two hikes in the Calanque, one easy and one difficult one. They also went swimming in the beautiful beach seen on the photo. When they came back they brought fancy cheeses, olives and sour dough bread that we had for dinner.

REPORTAGE.
