Sulien never thought he’d have this life, this genuine, domestic, loving life. But as he held the kids in his arms it all became even more real. They were barely a month old, born only a week apart, and they were so small in his arms as he gazed down at them. He was surprised to see Àine staring back up at him, previously blue eyes now a vibrant shade of lilac. His own eyes widened and he looked up to see if his partner was nearby.

Lyla remained asleep beside her sister, but Àine cooed at him, babbling happily. “Oh my sunlight, you too carry our curse, hm? I’m so sorry you bear my mark.” Sulien whispered softly as he adjusted the blanket she was wrapped in. He was sure if he checked, she’d have the same off orange sun mark that he has, but he didn’t want to confront the stars right now.

The door creaked behind him but he paid it no mind, it could really only be one of two people. "How are they?" Ajax asked softly, coming to stand behind Sulien. "Oh, that's new." The younger man commented, gently wiggling his finger in front of Àine's face, much to her glee as she reached for him.

"I thought using two surrogates and avoiding twins my curse would skip them." Sulien sighed, handing Àine off to Ajax who took her with a soft laugh. Lyla stirred in his arms as he adjusted his grip on her and he grimaced, hoping she wouldn't wake.

"You didn't know, solntse. It isn't your fault." Ajax whispered, leaning his head against Sulien's affectionately. Sulien hummed, leaning his head against his lover's shoulder. "At least they're utterly adorable and healthy, right?"

His touch was cold as he reached for you, even with the gloves he almost never went without. Maybe it was the moonless night or maybe it was the way his gloved thumb brushed against your bottom lip, but it was certainly cold.

"I've been gone some time, my prince, and I must apologise." Sandrone spoke earnestly, tilting his head at you. Even with the mask, he exuded an apologetic feel. They shiver against the Harbinger's cold touch on them, and yet they don't bother pulling away. Instead, they timidly attempt to get closer to the man in question. "I guess some things never truly change, after all..."

They look up at the expressionless, porcelain face in front of them. Oh, how they'd come to love it regardless. "I've missed you too, sunlight... I've missed you so much..." They laid their arms atop of his shoulders the best they could, pulling him down to their eye level. "It's been far too long, my love."

The crackle of the fireplace was the only sound in the room besides the soft sound of the occasional page turn. It was late, or rather, early. Four am. The moon was full, but the approaching storm and distant cracks of thunder covered its brilliant glow with darkened clouds.

He sighed softly, sliding his bookmark, patterned with periwinkles, between the pages of his book. He wasn't entirely sure what to do. So used to an empty house, an empty heart. But his brother lifted his head, bright lilac eyes pulling away from the pages of his own book.

"It's late." Ohm commented, voice quiet, as if being too loud might crumble the man in front of him. As if he might just disappear like ash. Sulien nodded, wordlessly placing his bookmark between the pages and his book on the coffee table in front of him.

Ohm stood up, placing his own book within one of the various shelves that lined the walls. "You should get some sleep, alright? My room is just down the hall if you need anything." Ohm turned to look at him as he stood, cradling one arm to his chest as he did so. "Does it hurt?"

"No.. Well, no it's fine." Sulien's voice, whilst monotone, conveyed something smaller beneath the surface. Something much more reminiscent of the boy that Ohm once knew. Their relationship was still rocky, still fresh after so many years apart.

Sometimes, even though he was looked in a mirror, Ohm couldn't believe he was real. He was here. "Can I sleep in your room?" Sulien questioned, breaking the older twin from his thoughts. "It's just- that I.. Well.." And it was like his training went out the window.

He was a scared little boy again.

Ohm tilted his head to the side, closing his eyes as he smiled softly at his brother. "Of course. Go ahead, I'm just going to put another log in the fire." He moved to tend to the fire but Sulien didn't go much further than the hallway arch, watching his brother expectantly.

Sulien didn't have to wait long as his twin placed a large log within the fire, pushing it back with the poker. Ohm sighed, putting the poker on the hook, he stood straight. "Alright, brüderlein. Let's go sleep." He held his elbow out as he joined Sulien's side.

And he wasn't sure if he was surprised or not as Sulien linked their arms, his younger brother leaning against him once more. He wished he'd been faster, wished the circumstances were different. That he had done more. But the past was the past, and all he had was the now, was this.

And so he led Sulien to the bedroom.

And he stayed up as his twin rested beside him, pillow clutched tightly between the younger twin's arms.

And he did what he couldn't do; he watched over Sulien.

This time, protection from a storm. Next time? Protection from any harm that may come the sun's way.

“You can’t keep doing this to yourself.”

Their words were so soft, so genuine. Ohm tensed out of habit, he was used to being kind, used to hiding the effects of his abilities. He wasn’t used to somebody looking beneath the layers he shrouded himself in. They brushed their fingers through his long hair, pushing his bangs out of his face.

“I’m fine. You don’t have to worry about me, Schatz.” He tilted his head up to look at them from his position sat on the bed. They brushed their thumb over the bruise on his cheek and he bit back his wince with an uneasy smile. They raised their eyebrow at him and he cleared his throat, lilac eyes glancing to the side.

“How bad is it?”

Ohm sighed at their question, eyes slipping closed for a moment. Was there any reason to hide it? He brought his hands to the bottom of his blouse and they released his face so he could pull the article off, letting it drop on the bed beside him. This was the first time they saw him shirtless, let alone the injuries he currently nursed from transferring all of Aether’s to himself.

Their gasp did make him grimace and he chewed on his busted upper lip as he continued to look away. His torso was massively discoloured, but they didn’t miss the navy crescents on his ribcage, or the thick bands around his biceps. They reached out, fingers gently brushing against the navy tattoo on his right arm, where they touched glowed a faint azure under their fingers.

With the shirt out of the way, they could see the small burn that branched out onto his neck wasn’t small at all, in fact the entire base of his neck and shoulder were covered in pyro scars, some very clearly a decade old, others perhaps only a year or two. “I block with that arm.” Ohm clarified when their fingers hesitated on the pink raised skin. That and that one time Diluc got him..

While they could sit and trace his scars all day, and it’d surely take all day, they instead focused on the large and nasty gash that was no doubt sewn closed by the man himself. The stitching was immaculate, but the fact it stretched from the base of the right side of his ribcage and went all the way to his left hip, they frowned, fingers hovering above the wound.

“Nothing I can’t handle, Schatz, I’ve been through worse.” If they looked any closer, they’d notice the multiple broken ribs beneath all of the bruising, he just hoped they wouldn’t look. They brought their hands up, cupping his cheeks and tilting his head up to them. They brought their own head down, pressing their lips against his cold ones. A flash of a smile on his lips before he returned the gentle gesture.

“Don’t touch me.”

His voice was even, monotonous as ever. They retracted their hand immediately. The harbinger all but threw the cracked pieces of his mask onto the table of their shared apartment. Blood seeped through his coat, only showing from the massive rip in the fabric. They spared a glance at his face, when was the last time he had been so expressionless when it was just the two of them? Weeks, at this point.

Blood dripped from his broken nose as he unclipped his belt, letting it fall to the ground of the kitchen. He pushed his hood down, periwinkle locks falling in his face now that they were no longer restrained by mask or hood. His hair was always a mess, but now it was worse, sticking up in random places, dirty and covered in blood. “Get me my medical kit, please.” He began to unbutton his coat.

They obliged, fetching the kit from the bathroom. They returned to Sulien sitting on the kitchen table, shirt gone. They stopped in their tracks as he cracked his nose back into place. Their eyes scanning the marred skin of his torso. They’d never seen him shirtless, perhaps there was a reason for that. Sulien cursed at the pain he just inflicted on himself by fixing his nose and the sound brought them back to their senses.

The medical kit was placed on the kitchen table and they moved around the table to wet a cloth for him. They held the cloth out to him and he took it, pressing it against the gaping wound across his torso. “Sorry you have to see me like this.” Sulien’s voice seemed to soften as he wiped away the blood, the white cloth staining crimson. From their position behind him they could see the long thin raised scars on his back and their heart clenched at the sight.

“What happened to you?” They stammered out after a few moments, almost immediately cursing themselves for the insensitive comment. Sulien hummed, tossing the cloth down beside him and reaching into the medical kit. He pulled out a spool of thread and a small kit of needles.

“I’ll give you three guesses, but I’d prefer if we didn’t discuss it.” Even now, with a wound that surely could have killed him had it even just been a bit worse, his hands were steady as he threaded the needle. He tied it off using his teeth, sharp canines tugging the tread to a close. Sulien could feel their stare on his back and he shifted uncomfortably before focusing on stitching himself.

They almost doubted that the Fatui taught how to stitch yourself, and they couldn’t help but wonder how many years Sulien had been taking care of himself. Coffee. He always liked coffee. They turned and began to quietly make him a cup of the only drink he didn’t seem to turn his nose up at. He muttered something in Snezhnayan and they were positive he was cursing the universe.

Several minutes passed and they set the fresh cup of coffee down on the counter beside them. Once more they turned to watch him work on himself, the stitching done, he was now wordlessly bandaging his torso. He cut the gauze and halfheartedly tied it off. With that done, Sulien slid off of the kitchen table.

They grabbed the mug and held it out to him when he finally turned towards them. He raised an eyebrow but rounded the table to close the distance and take it. “You made me coffee? Thank you.” His voice was barely above a murmur, the slightest bit of the pain he felt leaching into the end of his words. The most emotion he could muster in the moment, perhaps. One hand held the mug, the other arm wrapped around their torso, bringing them against his chest.

Sulien rested his chin on top of their head, lilac eyes closing as he relished in their warmth. “You don’t have to hide this from me.. I don’t think any less of you.” They whispered against his chest, wrapping their arms around his hips rather than his waist to avoid aggravating the injury. Sulien hummed in response, bringing the mug to his lips and enjoying the coffee.

While he may not express it, that validation was all he really needed.
