(A/N: Part one and two are up. We’re back with lifeguard Leon Kennedy! What happens after Reader and Leon’s date? Does Reader ever get his number? Does the Reader’s friend get to see the pairing they’ve been cheering for? Have you had water recently? The last part will be part four. Warnings: Mentions of sea creatures, fluff, romance, Leon being Leon with phrases, puns, and kissing. Word Count:  4,514 words)
~~~
Blue skies and happy vacationers made for a bright summer.
Thinking of the previous evening spent with a certain handsome lifeguard made the summer utterly delightful. It made getting out of bed in the morning easier.
You were happy; eager for a new day.
Within your wishes of the day, you hoped that Leon was also happy.
Being a lifeguard held huge responsibilities. Each day was different and Leon held his own while under pressure. He had dealt with people yelling in his face, rip tide, and lost children. That wasn’t including everything a lifeguard had to do either.
I hope today is a calm day for him, you thought. He definitely deserves it.
“Lifeguard duty again, I see.” Your friend stated from beside you.
The pair of you walked towards your preferred spot on the sandy beach. A little ways ahead of the lifeguard chair that was in clear view as you approached.
“Don’t be weird,” your friend added and zipped ahead.
“Sure, thanks.” You called after them. Shaking your head, you walked closer to the chair shaded by a red umbrella.
Sitting with an elevated view of the beach sat the very handsome man you had been crushing on for multiple vacations. One who happened to set out the lifeguard chair closer to the water and to where your friend always set up the towels. The larger lifeguard tower sat quietly behind it all, slightly off in the back, but not by much.
Just be casual. It’s fine.
“Hey Leon.” You grinned at him.
He leaned over the armrest and removed his sunglasses, a soft smile on his lips. “Hey you. Any adventures planned for today?”
“Might go swimming later.”
His smile widened. “Have fun. I’m here if you need me.”
“I appreciate that.” With a wave, you went to join your friend.
On the towels, your friend crossed their arms. “I’m going to need more salt in these chips to counteract you two and your sweetness.”
“Sure.” You stretched out on the towel, grinning unapologetically.
“I’m serious.”
“Oh, I know.” You chuckled and tilted your head back to take a peek at your favorite lifeguard.
Leon’s smile only grew upon meeting your gaze. After a tiny wave, he put his sunglasses back on.
Oh, that smile, you thought and brought your sights ahead of you once more.
What could that smile do to you?
If only you could see that smile of Leon’s more often.
***
Summertime held the perfect atmosphere for grilling, swimming, and sweet treats. Hot weather also brought a collection of clouds. Some of which caught attentive people’s notice.
Lunch time was around the corner and an offshore thunderstorm was quickly rolling in to meet it.
That’s a little too dark, you thought while eyeing the horizon.
Glancing over at Leon seat at his appointed chair, his gaze was focused on his phone. A rarity in his position. He nodded to himself before putting the device away.
Having locked with your gaze, Leon pointed out towards the water and said, “I’m going to start calling people in. The lightning is getting too close. You should get indoors for safety.”
“Okay.”
He didn’t need to tell you twice. You knew what lightning could do, especially the risk on a flat, sandy beach.
Together in record time, you and your friend packed up your belongings. The air around you had already felt different, charged and ready. The two of you scurried off of the long expanse of sand before the sky broke open into a downpour.
***
Much later, after thunderstorms and an early dinner, you headed to the gaming room. You were in dire need of entertainment. Checking the weather and hearing your friend repetitiously give critique on how you should talk to Leon more was enough to push you outdoors. The idea of playing in the arcade was rendered the preferable option.
Only a couple of minutes walk across wet concrete and various paths took up your time. Thunder still rolled in the distance, but the worst had passed, as you expected.
What you had not expected was to see Leon as you entered the gaming room. Well, his back, anyway; a clean white shirt and red swimming trunks. The man was leaning forward with full concentration over the pinball machine across from the main door.
Walking closer, you did your best not to startle him.
But who were you kidding? He was Leon.
“Checking on your high score?” Leon asked as you stepped up beside him.
“Maybe. Just curious.”
Risking a glance, Leon sent you a half-smile that weakened your knees.
How did you manage such strength the day before?
You shifted your weight from one foot to the other.
“I’m trying to put what I learned from you into practice.”
“And how’s that working out?” You watched the pinball ricochet through the middle section.
“I could use your professional guidance.”
“Yeah?” You peeked at his score, as his numbers had yet to put him in the top players.
Letting out a small grunt, Leon barely saved the pinball from dropping out of the game.
How should I do this? You thought, eyes flickering between his stance and the pinball itself.
“Would it help my case if I said, pretty, please?” Leon hit the side buttons repeatedly and unnecessarily. The newly placed pout on his lips made his attempts at pinball appear more desperate than initially seen.
“It wouldn’t help your timing,” you chuckled lightly and inched closer. “May I?” Your hands hovered over his on either side of the machine.
“Go for it.”
With most of your subconscious mind screaming, you proceeded to help Leon with his timing by placing your hands over his as he played. The small bit of logic in you hoped it would teach him to anticipate the pace of the game.
“Keeping the pinball in play for as long as possible,” you pressed his right fingers against the button, “is almost more important than getting the highest points on the board.”
“That sounds counterproductive.”
“I mean… If you’re only focused on getting the ball to those higher points, only, rather than keeping it in play, you’re going to lose out on more points in the long run.”
“Long term goals versus quick and big points. All right.”
As you two spoke, the pinball sped from one side of the board to the other. The traction leading it closer to following the loop towards the bottom.
“Okay. You can’t be too early because it’ll either fall in or you’ll be holding it there before trying to get the momentum back. It’s a tricky spot—so try avoiding that.”
The pinball was hit, its direction more favorable.
“Got it. Strategic not over zealous.”
“Exactly.” You kept your eyes trained on where the pinball traveled. A much more difficult task as Leon leaned closer to your level.
Goodness, you could smell him. It reminded you of vacation mornings and the baking aisle. Light and sweet backed with a quiet earthy scent. To be wrapped up in it for even an hour would be heavenly.
Focus. Focus. Fo— Crap.
Time ticked by without your attention on anything but the task set before you.
Spending one on one time teaching Leon ended up much more intimate than you imagined. He learned quick and not once did he downplay your own playing abilities.
The final pinball fell away. Lights and sounds ceased as a score was finalized.
Leon had gained a high score under your own. The illuminating numbers displayed for all to see.
Removing yourself from him quietly was a test of your composure. Your hands felt colder without his.
“Not bad.” He mused, eyeing the scoreboard. “Room for improvement, that’s for sure.”
Turning to you, Leon and yourself shared a smile as you gazed at each other. All warm and familiar.
“You did great.” You said softly.
“I had professional help.”
“Is it my turn?” A voice piped up from behind the two of you.
Startled, you both looked over to see a kid, no older than ten, waiting patiently and a tad confused at whatever he just witnessed.
“Oh!”
Apologizing to the kid, the pair of you quickly sidestepped away from the pinball machine.
“Oops,” you covered up a laugh. “Good game though.”
“Thanks.” Reflexively, Leon checked his watch and his eyebrows rose. “Ah. Didn’t realize it was that late. I should head home.”
“Oh. Get home safely, okay?”
“I will.” Leon’s smile was small, but incredibly sweet. “May I call you some time?”
Flutters erupted in your stomach.
It’s happening.
“If that’s alright?”
“Yes— It’s…it’s fine. Uh.” You dug out your phone and he did the same.
In a blur of numbers and bashful laughter, you both exchanged numbers and bid one another a good night.
***
The following day, clouds were building higher in the sky. Still blue and exceedingly warm. A promise for a fun summer day.
“Hey.”
You turned to see Leon jogging up to you. A minor interruption on your way back to the rented condo to give your friend their favorite snacks.
“Hey, Leon,” you greeted him happily.
“Hi…uh.” He pulled at his shirt. No lifeguard or safety symbol in sight. “Are you busy today?”
“I’m on vacation.”
“Right.” Leon rotated the watch on his wrist. “Are you all right with aquariums?”
“Sure. Depends on the aquarium, I guess.”
“Would you like to go with me as a date?”
You smiled.
“To the aquarium. There’s one in the town over. I can drive us there; it’s only about twenty minutes or so.”
“Today?” You asked.
“Yes. Today.”
“Right now?”
“Oh! We don’t have to go right now. Not if you don’t want to. We—”
“I’d love to.”
Leon’s shoulders visually relaxed.
“Let me just change shoes and we can go. If you’re ready?”
“I’m ready,” he said quickly. “I’ll wait here.”
You gave him another smile and discreetly rushed inside.
***
Your date had assured you that the aquarium was both a research and animal rehabilitation center. No catching creatures for show and profit. Only education and hopefully giving the animals better lives if they could not be released back into their home. A home so close.
Leon had picked you up and drove you out on about a twenty minute drive. The time spent in the vehicle held various music choices and comments of other people’s driving skills. It wasn’t necessarily awkward, just a new environment. Leon made it fun either way.
“So, which animals are you most excited to see?” He questioned after paying for your ticket.
“Sharks.”
“No hesitation.” He chuckled, walking beside you.
“Well, we can see the other animals too, obviously.”
“Yeah, but now I’m learning which is your favorite. All the shark’s teeth meant something, huh?”
Leon slipped his fingers along your palm and your hands effortlessly clasped together.
“It did.” You smiled to yourself. “And thank you again for helping.”
“Of course.”
Shades of blue and a wide spaced interior offered a calm atmosphere. Not crowded or loud. Out of the way, signs directed visitors towards specific exhibits and animals, colorfully spaced every so often. Nothing overwhelming to deter you from exploring.
Your date, delighted as he was to be in your company, eagerly and curiously walked with you towards a wall of thick glass. Beyond it, fish of all shapes and colors swam between their decorated environment.
“I heard they keep their octopi locked up pretty tight.”
“Octopuses.” You corrected.
He raised an eyebrow.
“It would be octopi if the word octopus was latin, but it’s not. It’s weird. I know. Sorry.”
“Knowing isn’t weird.” Leon gave your hand a squeeze. “Knowing is understanding more about the world.”
“And hopefully respecting it.”
“Yeah. Hopefully.”
In front of you both, a large fish with old scratch marks languidly swam by. Possibly an injury from propellers of a boat or netting. The fish was, without a doubt, not young and may have even been in a few scraps with others sea creatures.
The sea and the creatures within were a wonder.
Swimming closer to the glass, the fish slowly passed.
“Okay,” you added. “That one was pretty big.”
“It could probably eat me whole.”
“No.” You hushed his outlandish thoughts.
“It could. You saw that thing, right?”
Walking along the tank, you said determinedly, “I’m not letting any fish eat you. Not on purpose and not on accident.”
At your words, Leon held himself higher and gave a satisfied look over to the fish. “Hear that? I’m off the menu. And not just because I’m on a date.”
You laugh came suddenly and short.
He’s a goof too, you thought while shaking your head in good humor.
Further inside the aquarium, after seemingly traveling through a tunnel with tanks on either side, you two spotted multiple pools in the center of an area. The small pools had numerous people gathered around them; even to the point of leaning against ‘Do Not Touch’ signs around the short exhibits.
Probably fish and stingrays, you thought. Not the delicate ones though.
“I’ve seen videos where fish keep circling back to get scratches.” You told your date as you two strolled passed.
“A dogfish?”
“No.” You bumped his arm lightly.
“A catfish?”
“Neither of those and I don’t remember what it was.”
Leon nodded and said in a serious tone, “Could definitely be related to a dogfish.”
Laughing quietly, you pulled him along towards the next exhibit of interest.
“Oh,” Leon exclaimed playfully. “I think I see where you want to go.”
“Hmm?” Following his line of sight gave way to a bright smile on your lips. “Oh, yeah.”
“Called it.”
Mutual delight added a skip to each step.
The pair of you headed toward an unobstructed view of another tank, taller than either of you could reach. Watery depths decorated with corals added more color to the shades of blue. One of the far sides were indistinguishable to its true distance as it kept a large environment for many fish; neither rectangular or perfectly round. An informational sign listed more than a dozen sea creatures in that tank alone.
Of all the fish, one caught your attention first. A hammerhead shark.
Hands intertwined, you and Leon observed the few visible hammerheads as they as almost swiveled through the water with their flattened head. It was peaceful. Everything there an ease to approach in order to learn and witness animals almost as if through a screen; close and mostly clear.
“When I was little, hammerheads were the first shark I liked.” You stated, wistfully thinking of a moment in your childhood. “No one ever told me they were scary or anything. I could just look at them without being fed terrifying tales.”
“Are they still your favorite?”
“I may be a little partial to great white sharks.”
“Movies didn’t scare you off?”
“Nope. I’ve watched too many nature documentaries for that.”
Softly, Leon’s thumb caressed the side of your hand. A soothing and comfortable gesture; touch that came naturally as if done a dozen times before.
“Nurse sharks are really nice too,” you said as you spotted one at the bottom of the tank. “They’re still cool even though people don’t get all crazy hype about them. They’re important too.”
“Important animals should be considered cool regardless. Or at least not badmouthed in groups. Do you know how many shark movies there are where the shark is the antagonist?”
“More every summer, I’m sure.”
“There’s always someone at the beach trying to scare people or asking if there are any sharks in the water.” Leon gestured widely with his free hand. “Technically, yeah, there are sharks in the water. It’s just a huge body of water. They’re likely not near shore depending on the time of day.”
“And time of year.”
“Yeah. I hope there’s not a new shark movie this year…”
“Nah. I think it’s romcoms and zombies.”
“Great.” Leon chuckled sarcastically.
Patting his bicep affectionately, you steered him around a curve of the tank to see more.
And more was seen amongst all blues and greens. Both of you enjoying the views full-heartedly. The large tank of sharks held true as a definite highlight.
Minutes turned into hours and comments lengthened into conversations. The pair of you went through almost every exhibit sharing facts about animals and memories of each other’s past.
A lovely date nearing its end.
Near one of the exits of the aquarium stood a well-lit gift shop. The two of you wandered into it with curious eyes. It was small, but stuffed full of merchandise.
You could easily be in there for half an hour glancing around.
Somewhere between souvenir cups and being distracted by detailed figurines, you did not see Leon’s movements. When you had peered over next, you found that Leon had disappeared from your side.
Huh. Where’d he go? You thought as you glanced around the shop. Did he find something?
Finally, you spotted him at the register being handed a bag.
He bought something. Okay… Not a big deal, but why’d he veer off so quickly?
Upon grabbing the bag, Leon turned away from the counter, eyes scanning the shop.
Raising a hand, you gave a tiny wave.
His bright smile greeted you once he found you. In a few strides, Leon returned to you with an air of excitement.
“Found something good?” You asked.
“I did. It’s for you.”
“What?”
Seeing your smile, Leon grabbed your hand and lead you out of the shop.
“You didn’t have to get me anything.”
“Wait ‘till you see it first.” Leon held open the bag for you to look inside.
Peering up at you was the grey and white face of a plush great white shark.
“Really?” You practically squealed in glee as you lifted the plush out of the confines of the bag.
“Yeah. All yours.”
“He needs a name.” You announced as you begun rotating the soft plush in your hands, checking every detail of cuteness.
Leon hummed in thought.
“Something that makes sense.”
He hummed again.
You turned the plushie at different angles before poking its nose.
“Finn.”
“Finn?” You looked to Leon with an approving smile. “That’s so cute.”
“Well, he is yours.”
“I love it. And I love him too.” You gave the plush a light hug. “But… I didn’t buy you anything.” You glanced back at the gift shop.
“Trust me, giving you Finn is better than anything in there.”
A bubbling warmth filled you, eased you and made you smile continuously.
How is Leon real?
***
Another hot summer day and window shopping was on the agenda. You and your friend went exploring the local shops to your hearts content. Options wide and catered to tourists. The perfect opportunity for your friend to ask a hundred questions about your date from the day before. At least your friend and your own curiosity for artisan goods could be satisfied more directly. Just the two of you. A normality during and outside of vacations.
Late in the evening, back in the rented condo, your phone alerted you of a text.
It was from Leon, asking if you’d be up for a swim in the pool later. The pool at the beach club had lights and usually people were gone by nine o’clock the latest.
You informed your friend before they could ask.
“Go with him.” Your friend urged.
“But it’s already late.”
“You stay up late. What’s the difference?”
“I’m inside when I stay up late.” You stated.
They fell back onto their bed.
Hugging your little shark plushie closer, you said, “I’m just….a creature of habit.”
“Do you want to go swimming with a fun, kind, and super fine with-and-without-a-shirt man that saves lives for a living?”
“Yes.” You answered quietly.
“Then what’s stopping you from answering the man? He’s into you.” They pointed to Finn and then the shark teeth. “Very into you.”
Taking a few deep breaths, you replied to Leon.
Sounds fun. I haven’t been able to use the pool yet. :)
Then it’s a date? (crossed fingers)
Yes, I’ll have to leave Finn here then.
Break the news to him gently. Don’t need him tearing up the room (fish)
I’ll do my best. :D See you later!
Can’t wait. ;)
“He sent a winking emoji,” you exclaimed.
Bolting upright, your friend squealed, “Show me! Oh my god!”
“There.” You turned your phone.
A little exchange of enthused exclaims later followed before you went to freshen up and change into a swimsuit.
***
Folded towel held in the crook of your arm, you found your favorite lifeguard standing beside the pool chairs.
“Hey you.” Leon’s smile was infectious.
“Hey.”
“You ready for a swim?” Tilting his head, Leon’s eyes held your gaze warmly.
“Yeah.” You set your towel on a lounge chair.
In one swift movement of flexed muscles, Leon had removed his shirt.
You swore that your brain malfunctioned for a whole five seconds.
Giving you a cheeky smile, Leon hopped into the pool. Water droplets sprinkled along the tile by the seating.
My brain really needs to catch up with me, you thought while regaining your sense of self amidst the small splash.
You knelt by the edge of the water as your date’s head breached the surface.
“Finn isn’t too mad at me for stealing time with you, is he?” Leon asked and shook his hair out of his eyes.
“A little, but I think he understands.”
Carefully, you slipped into the water. It was a comfortable temperature despite the late hour. You swam further out into the pool to join Leon.
“That’s a relief. Don’t need him bumping his nose into me when I least expect it.”
“Cant’ have that.” You smiled softly. “We’ll make it up to him.”
“How’s fish crackers and Jaws sound?”
“Fin-tastic.” The words left you before you could filter them out.
Bringing his hand up through the water, Leon splashed you. He laughed as soon as you retaliated. The two of you went back and forth until you were wiping water from your eyes.
Now is not the time for this. You internally scolded your eyes.
“Sorry about that. Does it sting?” Leon asked. His voice was incredibly close.
“I’m fine.” You opened your eyes, but squinted almost immediately.
Leon shook his head. “May I see?”
You nodded.
Gentle hands cradled your face as he inspected your eyes one at a time. His thumb prodding your skin only enough to nudge your eyelids to open more.
“They might get a little irritated from all the chlorine they put in here. You should rinse with some water when you get back to the room, but you’ll be alright.” His warm breath fanned over your face, sending a chill down your side. One of his thumbs rubbed across your cheek affectionately.
“Nothing serious?” You questioned quietly.
“No, you’re—” Leon’s voice caught in his throat as his gaze locked with your own.
The pool’s water settled. Sounds of the waves in the distance were mere whispers.
Leon’s hands remained in place as you lost yourself in the depths of his blue eyes. Neither of you shied away from the vulnerability.
How were you suppose to react when all you wanted was to know more?
Your attempts at steadying your breathing was near impossible.
Bravery had its moments and yours came as your fingertips ghosted over Leon’s biceps. His gaze flickered down to your lips. Just centimeters away from his own.
“Leon,” you whispered.
“May I?” He swallowed and added quietly, “Please?”
The questions melted your heart.
How could Leon be so….endearing?
Fingers curling around his arms, you answered softly, “Yes.”
Eyes fluttered shut as your lips were greeted by a light pressure. Tenderness seeped into your skin every second Leon kept you close. Everything else faded away.
All too soon or much later, you couldn’t tell, the kiss ended.
The beauty of it still shined in Leon’s eyes, more stunning than the night sky. His smile tickled every ounce of happiness into light. So genuine and sweet.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Leon asked softly.
“Like what?”
“Like…you discovered something. Like you’re looking at something for the first time.”
You ducked your head, smiling then. “In a way, I guess.”
“What?” He chuckled and lifted your head to look at him again. “You discovered that I don’t kiss weird?”
Grinning, you shook your head. “I’m happy with you.”
Steadily and all over, the humor on Leon fell away to reveal open gratefulness. Pure and fully content.
“I’m happy with you too. So happy.” Circling an arm around your waist, Leon brought you even closer. The warmth of your bodies very evident, arousing.
Something within you both clicked.
Lips met again, firmly and passionate in each minute movement. A series of affections on repeat between quick inhales for air.
A light bump to your back signaled that Leon had you both by the pool’s edge for support. One strong arm at the edge to keep you both afloat. His lips traveled along your jawline. Exciting and thorough. Your hands tangled into his wet hair and encouraged him to continue kissing down your neck.
You sighed blissfully. Letting one of your hands travel down his toned back.
At the junction between neck and shoulder, you felt his open-mouthed kiss slow. The warmth of Leon’s exhale raised chills down your back. He gave another kiss. Still the same spot, well heated from the intimacy.
But how much further would you two go? In a public pool, mind you.
“Leon.” You whispered.
In response, he hummed. A delightful vibration that made you almost change your mind.
“We should…slow down a little.”
Leon raised his head to see your face. “Are you okay?” His eyebrows knit together in concern.
“Yeah.” You breathed out. “Just…” Trailing off in words, you glanced around you at the few overhead pool lights and dark buildings.
He nodded.
Chills ran over your water droplet-covered skin as the night air touched you. A fair reminder of where you two were.
Ever the observant one, Leon nudged his forehead against yours and stated, “Why don’t we get you warm in a towel?”
You smiled and gave a small nod.
Taking ahold of your hips, Leon lifted you out of the pool to sit on its edge. He snuck in a kiss to your knee. It was healing nicely.
He’s so attentive, I might melt or…something.
Leon waited for you to stand before pulling himself out of the water. Another glorious view of his being.
After making sure your towel was securely around your form, Leon kissed your forehead.
“Let’s get you inside.”
The short distance walking you back to your rented condo was filled with lingering looks and one of his arms wrapped around you.
“Good night,” Leon kissed you on the lips tenderly.
“Good night.” You smiled as he bumped your nose affectionately and squeezed your hand one more time.
“Tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow.”
"Summertime" - Part 4/finale - Leon Kennedy x Reader
(A/N: Part one, two, and three are up. Here is the finale of Summertime! Thank you so much to everyone reading this little series and giving it love.
Warnings: very minor angst, fluff, romance, and use of (Y/N) for your name.
Word Count:  2,883 words)
~~~
Birds chirped outside and the morning light made its way into the bedroom. Another day of a more than wonderful vacation.
Stretching, you smiled to yourself. Before your thoughts could ponder about breakfast they jumped to new memories. Dizzyingly fantastic memories you had made with Leon.
From shy smiles shared across the sand to dates that made your heart flutter. It was like a wonderful dream. Better than that, all the time you spent with Leon was real and sweet.
He’s sweet, you thought, and caring and wow.
Your smiling continued until a sudden realization:
This is our last full day here.
You sat up abruptly.
If there was one thing you needed to do, you had to tell Leon.
***
White fluffy clouds decorated the sky with hungry birds flying around the beach. Umbrellas had all ready been set up along the sand. Beachgoers had an early start.
Your sights were on something else.
Standing tall and usually unregarded by visitors, the Lifeguard Tower sat securely with an overview of the shoreline. The lifeguard chair looked small in comparison.
“Leon?” You called as you hurried across the soft sand.
A familiar figure poked his head out of the door at the Tower.
“Leon.”
The lifeguard on your mind rushed down the ramp upon hearing the strain in your voice.
“(Y/N), are you okay?” Leon met you by the railing and his gaze did a quick once over your form. A crease between his eyebrows was noticeable.
“Yeah. Well, physically.”
His shoulders, however covered by a white shirt, lowered drastically.
“I’ll just say it,” you huffed, “I forgot that I’m leaving tomorrow and I’m so sorry for not telling you sooner. It’s such a jerk move.”
A small smile framed his lips. His fingers brushed over your arm.
Why’s he smiling? You thought anxiously.
Leon’s expression softened.
“I know you never stay for very long. Last year you were here less than a week.”
“Oh.” You replied, more unsure.
He leaned against the railing, empathic and gentle. “Distance doesn’t have to end anything. I’d rather it didn’t.” Blue eyes gazed at you, unguarded.
“Yeah?”
Leon gave you one of his bright and hopeful smiles.
“Okay,” you said almost to yourself. “Would it… Would it be all right if I gave you my address?”
He perked up.
“For just in case you want to send something,” you said quickly, “like a letter or rock or… I have no idea what I’m saying.”
Chuckling, Leon stepped closer to you and took your hands into his own.
“I’ll have to check if sending shark teeth through the mail is allowed.” He teased. “But I have ideas all ready in mind.”
Relieved you hadn’t ruined anything, you laughed lightly along with him.
“And for the record, you’re not a jerk for forgetting something. I mean,” he smirked, “I forgot how late it was last night when I was with you. Would I be considered a jerk for that?”
“No.”
“Glad we’re on the same page.” He gave your hands a squeeze before taking a brief glance away. “I have to get back to work, but… Can we meet up tonight? Right here?”
“Sure—yes.”
“Perfect.” Leon released your hands, but gave your side a light squeeze. “There’s nothing to stress about. Enjoy your vacation, (Y/N).”
So you did.
***
Daylight hours were spent goofing off in warm water, eating fresh food, and sharing it all with your friend. The last day of vacation did not disappoint in appearance either. Weather without thunderstorms kept you both returning outdoors most of the afternoon.
It was only a matter of time before the sun set and most of your belongings were packed once more.
Butterflies raged in your stomach as you stepped down into the sand. You navigated by the outdoor lighting to reach the Lifeguard Tower as agreed upon.
Be yourself. Have fun. Breathe. You thought and caught sight of a moving beam of light. A flashlight?
To your relief and entertainment, you saw Leon first. It appeared to be a moment of Leon double checking a bundle under his arm.
Before you were nearly ten feet away, Leon spotted you. A smile evident on his face even in semidarkness.
“Hey,” Leon greeted you. Pushing off from the leg of the Tower to reach you, he planted a chaste kiss to your forehead. “Ready?” He pointed the light to the sand ahead of you.
“Yeah.” You gingerly held his bicep, much to both his and your delight.
Then across the cool sand you went together on the unpopulated beach. Stars shone from above, slow waves rolled to shore, and a slight breeze cooled the humid air.
About a minute or so of walking lead the pair of you to the destination. A relatively smooth part of the beach without dug-out sections and trash. Not typically where late night walkers roamed because the water was more than ten feet away.
No walking the beach then? You wondered.
“Just a second.” He said and handed you the flashlight. Leon stepped ahead of you, away from your touch, and shook out the bundle. In another shake, the blanket settled onto the sand. “I thought we could…watch the stars and talk. Or check for shark teeth. Whichever,” Leon offered.
It felt as if your heart doubled in size.
“I haven’t had the opportunity to stargaze yet.” You looked to Leon. Both excitedly nervous and without a doubt happy, you smiled.
“Glad I had the idea.”
Being mindful not to track sand all over the blanket, the two of you clamored onto the fabric unceremoniously. The flashlight was turned off in favor of the stars. Nothing else needed attention.
All of nature’s mysterious night surrounded you. Not in ill will, but as a calm setting for whatever you wished.
Right then, you hoped Leon shared your wish for togetherness. Something sweet and kind and everlasting.
Definitely a sweet idea, you thought as you observed Leon sitting to your left smoothing the blanket from any lumps.
“I think it’s fine.” You criss-crossed your legs. “Unless you’re sitting on a hole.”
Stopping thoughtfully, he pursed his lips and scooted once backward then to the right. Hands patted the space to his left and nodded. Leon peered to you, close enough to see his eyelashes.
“You’re right.”
“Oh?” You raised an eyebrow.
“It’s fine.”
Grinning, you bumped your arm to his.
Leon chuckled like a warm melody to your ears. Keeping close to you, he radiated that warmth and caused butterflies to fly in your stomach for precious seconds until that warmth reached your chest.
What delightful feelings anchored into your being. The beginnings of even more.
Waves crashed against the shore. Their sounds were a rhythm to soothe any minuscule nerves. Even if your thoughts started running away from you.
Do we hold hands? What do we talk about? Not about leaving. Not that. You thought while twisting your fingers and watching stars twinkle in the night sky. I could lean closer or… Oh.
Perhaps you were not the only one flipping through options for the date.
From behind you, you could sense movement. Closer and silent, Leon rested his weight on his right hand that laid flat on the blanket unseen by you. Like putting an arm on the back of the couch or leaning against a wall to be closer.
“I wish I knew more about constellations to point them out,” murmured Leon by your shoulder.
“We can still appreciate them.” You said. “I don’t know every shark species by heart and I still like looking at them and thinking they’re one of the coolest fish.”
He chuckled, “I know. But I think you secretly know them all.”
“I don’t.”
You turned your face and caught his playful smile.
“So secret…you don’t fully know. Not consciously.” Leon added and gave a quick kiss to your forehead.
Surely, you completely melted on the spot. A mass of happy human in the night next to a man you could foresee yourself falling for.
The knowledge of an upcoming distance dampened some future date ideas, but that’s all it was.
That we can handle, you thought confidently. I don’t live in another timezone or anything. And we have phones.
Looking down to your hands on your lap, you wondered how long you’d been smiling.
Enough to be noticed by the handsome Leon.
“Can I ask you something?” He brushed his left hand over yours.
“Sure.”
Your short reply hid the excited, impatience of your heart. A yearning to know Leon’s.
“Is it too soon to ask if we can be exclusive? Steady?”
You were not ready for the sight of bashfulness on his face, but it was endearing to another level.
Steady?
Before you could filter out your words, they slipped out in question. “How long have we been crushing on each other?”
Eyes widening for a second, Leon ducked his head.
“Too long,” Leon answered and gave your hand a squeeze. “All these people at the beach and my mind keeps going back to you. To what you could be doing or when I’ll see you again.” He lifted his head up. “It’s always good to see you.”
“Then we can see each other more than just during summertime.”
“Yeah.” Leon’s grin made a grand appearance.
Happy bubbles of warmth felt as if they’d surface from your body. Pleasant and very welcomed.
“Exclusively,” you added with a delighted laugh.
Meeting and muffling your laugh, Leon kissed you. His lips were soft as happiness seeped from him with a hint of mint. You let your fingers run through his hair. He hummed contently.
You practically giggled, “How’s my boyfriend?”
One last generous peck to your lips and Leon rested his chin on your shoulder.
“This is the best summer I’ve ever had.” Leon confessed with stars in his eyes and fingers intertwined with yours.
The best summer and start of something wonderful.
***
Home. Such odd feelings ran through you being in your personal sanctuary and a habit of walking through hot sand. You were happy to be back home nevertheless. Back to your schedule, your own bed, and familiarity around every corner.
But that was one heck of a vacation, you thought as you tossed clothes from your luggage into a hamper.
Thinking back on the fun and unexpected romance brought a smile to your lips even while preforming a mundane task.
Leon kissed me. We kissed. He bought me little Finn!
How fantastic and unbelievably wonderful your time at the beach and aquarium had been. And, better than early daydreams, it would not stop there. The pair of you wanted a relationship—not some fling or short-lived fantasy.
Leon and yourself had eyes for each other. Smiles too.
It was only a matter of time when you two would find a comfortable routine between learning more of each other’s schedules. There was no bother or annoyance.
In fact, Leon asked you to call when you arrived home, anxious to know you were safe.
He’s very thoughtful. You peered over to Finn, your great white shark plushie, and your face warmed with another smile. And we can do this. Even with changes…we can make it work. I want it to.
***
Cloudy skies and summer heat kept the beach area busy well into the season.
Seas of umbrellas, sunscreen, volleyballs, people, and towels traveled to the sand every day. Rain or shine. Hot or heatwave.
All of those things were present, but not the reason why Leon had a light warmth from his chest down to his toes.
He sighed, “You have it bad.”
Sinking into the driver’s seat, Leon glanced around the interior of his vehicle. One of the cup holders had turned into a small storage. Inside it sat a shark tooth from his first date with you, loose change from the day you helped him find his inner pinball professional, and a folded up pamphlet from the aquarium.
Leon still smiled at how happy you were to gather as many shark teeth as possible. A lucky man indeed to find someone who made him feel like he was enough. He didn’t need to do anything uncomfortable or as other’s expected. Leon could be himself with you. Silliness, knowledgeable, passionate, and all that followed.
The future could be fun to think about.
Blue eyes peered further to the passenger’s seat. A mental image, a memory, of you smiling and singing along with him to a song on the radio.
Having an empty seat beside him was the norm. Pizza box not included. Leon was used to it.
Sure, he could be alone, but he found that he preferred being in your company. To have someone to care for and to care for him in return. To talk about everything and nothing while living; not just going from day to day.
We could do anything. Us against the world.
***
Weeks passed from the end of vacation and your daily routines and schedules were in full swing. Days were still hot, but you had cool air condition to diffuse any flush. Whether a flush was from temperature or speaking with a certain lifeguard, you’d never admit.
It was a comfortable bliss to have ‘phone dates’ with your boyfriend. Perhaps also humorous and a little unpredictable at times. His jokes were something else.
Yet, you did miss him. It wasn’t wrong to want to see him. But alas, Leon was busy.
At least you had a day off. A nice Thursday at home in your apartment. No shoes and a marathon of marine documentaries playing on the television.
I could get an early start on laundry, you thought, not moving an inch from the couch. Your eyes refocused on the underwater scene and thought against productivity for the day.
You definitely needed a day without the push to go straight from one task to another. To go your own pace. To do as you pleased. To relax with your favorite interests all day.
Exhaling slowly, you sank further into the cushions.
The position wasn’t to last.
A short set of knocks sounded on your apartment door.
Fully alert and confused, you tried to remember if you had been expecting any packages. Nothing came to mind.
So, as anyone home alone would, you tiptoed to the door and had a look through the peephole.
You gasped in delightful surprise and unlocked the door as quick as your fingers could.
Door wide open and light trickling through the hall, the doormat had a figure standing in front of you. Leon Kennedy grinned and lifted up a hammerhead shark plushie.
“You wouldn’t believe the cost to ship a shark,” he said.
Joy flooded through you and overloaded your systems. You nearly doubled over from laughter and lingering surprise.
Leon was at your apartment!
“Hi.” You giggled. “I can’t believe you’re here.”
“Surprise.” Leon sang and stepped forward to wrap his arms around you.
Having your head tucked next to his and being within his embrace struck you with familiarity you’d been longing for. Your fingers’ grip bunched up the fabric of his white button up shirt, but he probably didn’t mind.
“May I come it?” He chuckled next to your ear.
“Yeah,” you didn’t release your hold on him. “Just close it.”
Thump
Door shut and privacy acquired, the pair of you continued hugging to your hearts’ content.
“I thought you were busy. Work or something.”
“Nah. Got the day off and wanted to surprise you.” Leon pressed a kiss to your head. “Hope you don’t mind.”
Leaning back a little to see him better, you moved your hands to cradle his fair face. “Never in a million years would I mind you surprising me with a visit.”
Leon’s face lit up in a wide grin. “So…a year after a million?”
“No.” You kissed his lips briefly, having to lean back as he went for more. “I still wouldn’t mind, but it’d be harder to surprise me.” Again, you kissed him, savoring the pressure of his lips on yours and his arms around your middle.
“I’ll try harder,” Leon murmured, “because I think this is real.”
Your heart skipped a beat.
Kisses were exchanged for attention, loving gazes.
“I meant what I said at the beach.” Leon confessed softly. “Distance doesn’t have to end us. And I’ll do everything I can to commit to us.”
Smiling, you could hardly keep your wits as tears built up in your eyes.
Blue eyes shone with bottomless wealth of hope.
“Distance, who? We waited this long… I’m not giving up now,” you declared. “I care about you too much. This is different than what I’ve ever had or imagined and it feels…right.”
Leon pulled you in close by your waist and kissed your nose.
“Us against the world.”
“Us, Finn, and this little guy,” you added, pointing to your side.
“Our growing school of sharks.”
“I like that.”
“Yeah?”
You pecked his lips, “Thank you. For everything.”
“We’re just getting started.”
Leon’s grin gave you a confidence and spirit-lifting joy, a promise of a bright and fun future. You, your two shark plushies, and loving Leon Kennedy. And each little shark every summertime that would follow.

"Summertime" Leon Kennedy x Reader -- Part Two
(A/N: Finally the next part in the lifeguard! Leon au. We continue with the Reader’s vacation with much more Leon~. I might have forgotten to mention that this is a tiny series.
Warnings: Use of (Y/N).
Word Count: 2,345 words)
Previous
~~~
A new day of vacation. New hopes of fun times and relaxation. Maybe some good conversation.
Heading to the game room of the beach club was first on your list for the day. Breakfast was already scratched off the list. So you thought it would be a good start since your friend was still getting ready for the day.
There was no rush. No need to be anywhere or do anything. It was vacation after all.
You heard someone’s quick steps approaching from behind.
Huh. Don’t bump into me. Don’t shoulder pas—
“Hey.”
Looking over, your heart skipped a beat at the bright face greeting you.
Oh.
Leon Kennedy in a cotton blend shirt highlighted by the morning light.
You could thank destiny later.
“Hey. Uh, how are you?”
You hoped beyond hope that you wouldn’t trip.
“Not bad.” Leon walked in-step with you. “Getting an early start on the day cleaning debris. How about you? How’s your knee?”
“It’s fine.” You swallowed. “Thank you. Thought I’d start the day with some gaming. My friend’s on a phone call.”
He hummed, low and beautiful. “Smart. Get in there before the kids hog it up.”
“Yeah. That’s the plan.”
“Be careful. Those kids can get territorial.”
“Could you help with crowd control?” You joked back.
“I’d do my best, but with those kids, we might have to climb out a window.”
That pulled a laugh out of you. His easygoing one liners tended to do just that without much failure.
Your laughter only doubled upon seeing a kid walk into the gaming room.
Leon must have followed your line of sight because he asked, “Do you need backup?”
“I might.”
After opening the door for you, Leon followed your lead into the room and towards the air hockey table.
“You’re up for some friendly competition in the morning?”
“If you’re up for it?” You activated the table.
Leon’s lips pulled up into a playful smile. “You first.”
The game went on for several minutes. The small puck zooming back and forth as you both did your best to win. Any taunting was barely concealed encouragements of where to angle a strike.
Even as Leon won victoriously, the laughter you two shared rung throughout the room.
“Excellent game, Leon.” You reached out your hand.
“Same to you.” He shook your hand firmly for a moment. “Up for another round?”
“Uh.”
You eyed the pinball machine as the kid left it unattended.
“Better claim it before someone else shows up.” Leon advised, ever the observant one.
The quarters were in your grasp before you made it to the machine.
I’ve been wanting to play this again, you thought as you inserted the quarters.
Being in front of the familiar machine had you in a serious stance. You had played pinball before, especially this very machine. Many summers were spent inside the gaming room as others sheltered from a thunderstorm.
Already engrossed into a game with tapping fingers, your mind grew more and more focused on doing one thing: beat your previous high score.
Leon stood close beside you. His body heat a contrast to the air-conditioning against your skin.
“Darn,” he breathed out. “You’re good at this.”
“I do my best.” You answered without looking away from the tiny metal sphere as you sent it flying across the system.
“You’re still on the first one.”
“For now…”
Focus. Come on. There! Okay, you thought as you continued playing. He’s only a step away from standing behind me or leaning closer. Keep going.
So you did. Minutes ticked by and the score on the screen only added up. The man by you cheered you on with encouraging words even when a sphere dropped. It fueled your desire to do better. Better than your past self.
Did you also want to impress Leon? Yes. Absolutely, yes.
“Crap.”
The second pinball escaped you.
“It’s okay. Shake it off.” Leon placed his hand along the edge of the pinball machine as he leaned in. Gaze on the pinball launch area and not the lit up score. “Last one.”
He’s really into this. At least he’s not bored. Thankfully.
Every second with Leon Kennedy proved to be an eventful morning. Not the least bit boring. The both of you were thoroughly enjoying one another’s company. Neither of you noticed nor paid mind to a couple of other kids sliding into the room and playing at the other gaming machines. As far as you two were concerned, you were the only two there; everything else faded.
Until it wasn’t so.
“There you are!”
Startled by your friend’s voice, you fingers fumbled and you missed your shot at saving the last pinball.
Darn it! You thought and looked over your shoulder to your friend walking inside.
“I was kidding about getting ice cream,” you said.
Straightening to his full height, Leon looked between you, your friend, and his watch.
“I should get out there.” He then turned his attention to you and added, “Great score.”
“Thanks.”
“See you later.” Leon gave a smile before walking out into the sunlight.
Like he’s walking back to the heavens or something.
Sighing, you eyed your friend and rose an eyebrow. You said nothing.
“Sorry,” they apologized. “My timing can be awful.”
“It’s fine. No harm done.” You took a peek at the scoreboard. “Although, I could say differently there… Just needed a few more.”
* *
A beautiful day and soft breezes called many to the beach. To you, however, you were heading off of the sand to freshen up indoors.
Bag hanging off of your shoulder, you made sure your shoes were back on properly after a stumble.
Good thing I haven’t lost them. This sand is hot.
“Hi again.”
You looked up.
“Leon. Hi.” You stopped as Leon walked further onto the sand in his lifeguard attire.
“Hey, if you’re not busy later after my shift, would you like to go get some ice cream with me?”
You blinked, your brain doing its best to register everything as real, save every detail to memory, and form a response. Also to remember to breathe. That was important.
“Sure.” You swallowed. “I’d love to.”
“Meet you by the gaming room around seven?” Leon asked.
“Yeah. I’ll see you there.”
“Great.”
His grin highlighted the world around you. With a short wave, he jogged down to towards the lifeguard tower.
All the while everything felt so much warmer.
I’m not calm about this. Should I be calm? It’s a date. Water, I need water.
* *
“Pick what ever you want. It’s my treat.”
“Anything?”
“Anything.” He repeated. “Except the store. That’s a little bland.”
“Oh darn. I really wanted to nimble on that door,” you snickered.
Before walking over to get ice cream down the street from the beach club, Leon had met you by the gaming room as agreed upon. It was clear that he took an opportunity to clean up and change into something not intended for swimming. Care put into his appearance, no question.
As promised, Leon did pay for your dessert and his. He was more than happy too. Even eyeing your flavor of choice with great interest. The only downside was that there wasn’t any seating inside. So you two decided to take a stroll.
It was much quieter and private. A comfortable way to spend time together. Get to know one another more than random small talk surrounded by others.
“Hear me out. Vanilla gets a bad rep by being called boring.” You stated.
“People like their mixture of flavors and toppings until its overflowing.”
“Sure, but everything’s already added to it. Vanilla starts out just fine and then you can turn it into cookies n creme or add caramel.”
“Make an ice cream sundae.” Leon added before eating more of his treat.
“Exactly.” You gestured widely.
“A banana split.”
“You can be creative with vanilla ice cream. It’s a great foundation. It doesn’t always have to be overflowing with toppings and stuff. I mean…if it’s well balanced. Sure.”
He smirked and asked, “What about adding a brownie? Not a tiny one.”
“Oh,” you pretended to clap while holding the last of your ice cream. “That, but make it a warm brownie.”
“Fresh out of the oven?”
“Either way.”
Leon chuckled. “I think we’re just making ourselves hungry.”
“Oops.”
Finishing off the last delicious spoonfuls of ice cream, the both of you tossed the trash responsibly.
Walking a bit further, you two found your way back to the beach. A familiar setting. Sunset still lingering on the horizon.
“Funny. I always find my way back here. Year after year.” Leon mused as he walked beside you, heading for the shoreline. “It’s not exactly what I pictured doing with my life.”
“Really?”
“Well, you know. You’re on track for one thing, but you get pulled into something else and…you stay with it.”
“Do you like being a lifeguard, Leon?”
Blue eyes looked out over the water.
The beauty of the image made you smile fondly.
Was he happy?
“I didn’t expect to like being a lifeguard. It’s tough some days, but I’m good at it. I want to help people and this is my way of accomplishing that.” Leon turned to offered you a smile. “I guess I’m lucky. Some people hate their job completely. I work where people come to get away.”
“And you’re happy. That’s really important.”
“It is. What about you? Are you happy with what you do?”
“I am. I guess. Some days are better than others.” You considered your words. “It’s just…some days can go from amazing to bizarre or terrible with one interaction or something from someone already having a crappy day. But, hey, it could be a lot worse.” You shrugged. “Or boring.”
You shuffled your shoes into the sand as you reached the wet sand. Shells and more in sight with the disappearing sunlight.
“That’s life. Never the exact same.” Leon walked on your side opposite the water. “Oh, boring can be dangerous.”
“What?” You looked at him, puzzled at his words.
“People can do some pretty stupid things if they’re bored enough. I’ve seen it.”
“On duty?”
“Fortunately for them.”
Oh, buddy. I bet they were given a talking to. For sure!
“What do you do when you’re bored?” You asked, slowing your pace. Something caught your eye.
He shrugged his shoulders. “Sleep. Watch some TV. You?”
Bending down, you brushed away some sand a dark shape.
A shark tooth! Finally. I lost some the other day out here. You thought happily.
Picking up the tooth, you let the soft incoming wave rinse it. A nice surprise for the evening. Not that the date wasn’t a great surprise.
The man standing near you chuckled warmly.
You glanced up.
“Found something?”
“Oh, yeah.” You stood up and offered him a glance at the small shark tooth.
“Neat. I figured most were dug up this morning.”
You groaned, “I know. But I’m not getting up before dawn to look for shark’s teeth. The runners and joggers are out.”
Blue eyes peered to the horizon line then back to you.
“We still have some light left if you want to find some,” he offered.
Leon’s offer could not have been more sweet.
There you two were, scavenging the beach-line for shark teeth amongst broken shells and sand. Two people smiling and literally digging were their bare hands before in grew darker.
You figured it was safer to search now that the beach was closer to empty and you were with Leon. Less of a chance of getting hit by a stray volleyball.
“Oh. Here we go,” Leon shifted through the sand and handed you a large shark tooth.
“Whoa.” You both inspected the tooth covering your palm in curious awe. “If I got up earlier, I’d be searching for these.” Squinting, you tried making out more details.
“We should head back.”
“Yeah.”
Carefully, you kept your pile of shark teeth cupped in your hands.
Leon didn’t take a step until you started walking away from the water.
“You like sharks?” He questioned.
“Yes, I love most sea creatures.”
He took your answer into account silently.
“Do you like sharks?” You asked in return.
“If they’re nice. Sure.”
You smiled.
Back to the condo by the beach where you and your friend were renting an apartment for the week was a sign that the evening was over.
Leon stood by the door as you fished out your key.
“Thank you for inviting me. It was really fun.”
“Thank you. I had a great time.” Leon smiled at your handful of shark teeth. “See you tomorrow?” He asked, hope lining his features.
“Rain or shine. I’ll be here.”
His lips pulled into a full grin. “Alright. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He nodded.
“Tomorrow.” Your cheeks burned with the continuation of your smiling.
Ducking his head for a moment, Leon took a step away before meeting your gaze again. “I hope you have a good evening.”
“You too, Leon.” You turned to go indoors with a smile still remaining on your lips.
Closing the door behind you, there was a squeal from your friend.
Here we go.
They opened their mouth to speak, but frowned in confusion at the sight of you holding a bunch of teeth.
“I thought you two went for ice cream?”
“We did,” you confirmed happily.
“Then what’s with the fossils?”
“We went to the beach. Talking and looking around.” You began searching for a bag or something to put the shark teeth in for safe keeping.
“Okay….and….he liked it? He wasn’t bored with you digging through the sand?”
“Oh—Leon helped. He found this one!” You held up the large shark tooth proudly.
“Darn. He’s more perfect than I thought.” They chuckled. “Did he pay for the ice cream?”
“Yup.”
“Did you get his number?”
Your smile dropped.
“(Y/N).” Your friend whined, hands on their hips.
“I’m sorry. We were busy having fun.”
They only sighed. “I’m happy you did.”
"Summertime" Leon S Kennedy x Reader -- Part One
(A/N: A Lifeguard AU where the only umbrella is for the blocking sun’s rays and rain.
Isn’t this pretty random of you, Erica? Well, yes, but I had decided to rewatch Aquamarine during Mermay and WHAM—idea! I actually haven’t finished rewatching the movie because of Leon.
Warnings: Mentions of a minor scrape on the skin.
Word Count:  1,350 words)
~~~
Every summer for the past few years was spent at the same beach club. The same comfortable atmosphere, friendly owner’s of the beach club, and water-loving regulars. Not to forget the salty air, good food, and a lifeguard that you would trust with your life.
Thankfully.
The bonus? The lifeguard was gorgeous. Not to forget smart and caring. People either ignored him, gave him side-eyes, or swooned at the mere sway of his shiny hair. Some considered him a popular attraction. So serious with his job, however with an interesting sense of humor. If you ever got it out of him. That was Leon Kennedy.
Your friend laughed no matter how funny Leon’s jokes were. They were definitely a fan.
Stepping onto the hot sand, you spotted your friend’s beach umbrella.
You sighed.
Of course they would, you thought.
They had planted the umbrella a few paces away from the Lifeguard tower. Directly in Leon’s line of sight.
You readjusted the tote bag on your shoulder. Calm breaths came easier as long as you kept moving to your destination. If you needed to say anything, you’d keep it short. A simple ‘hi’ went a long way.
You got this. Just walk.
As you entered Leon’s peripheral vision, he turned his head in your direction.
No one and no thing escaped his attention.
“Hey.” Leon gave a small wave from his seat.
“Hey,” you replied automatically. “How’s the weather up there?”
“Sunny and partly cloudy.”
“Nice.”
Movement stole your attention away from the man. Your friend was making quick hand gestures from underneath the umbrella.
What?
Resisting the urge to reach inside your tote and toss a water bottle at them, you simply made your way to the towels.
“Are you dehydrated already?” You asked.
“No.” Your friend leaned close. “Did you see his smile? He totally smiled at you.”
Slipping out of your shoes, you sat down.
“You saw it, didn’t you?”
“I was a little distracted by my choice in small talk.” You shrugged off your bag. “I hate small talk. It’s uncomfortable and weird. Not the good weird.”
“He could be still looking at you from behind those sunglasses.” They hummed mischievously and rummaged through the tote bag.
You narrowed your eyes playfully. “Don’t put thoughts in my head.”
“He does have a good view.”
You scoffed, covering your laugh. “You’re adding to those thoughts—not the fun ones. Ones where I’m too aware of what I’m doing and how I look.” You grabbed a bottle of water. “I came to enjoy the scenery.”
“Didn’t we all?” They wiggled their eyebrows before tearing into a bag of snacks.
* *
Passing time by indulging in your curiosities had you by the shoreline. Soft warm bubbles of the water tickled your skin with each wave.
I have to get up earlier for this, you thought. Or wait until low tide.
You were looking for small treasures in the sand. Shark teeth, unique shells, shiny rocks, and the like. Usually you always brought the shells back to the water. That was still your plan.
But plans could be sidelined.
Pain erupted on your shoulder with such a force you fell over.
“Ah.”
Crap.
A volleyball bounced across the shore.
Seriously? You thought and looked down. Right on the shells. Of course.
“I’m sorry!” A tanned beachgoer apologized as their friend went after the ball.
“Yeah. Uh. It was an accident.” You brushed off your hands, treasures scattered the ground.
They nodded and walked off awkwardly.
Movement off to the side caught your attention.
Leon had ran over quickly, the sunlight accentuating his defined arms.
“Hey, are you hurt?” He asked, kneeling down.
“I’m fine.”
You stood up and his gazed dropped to your knees.
“That’s not my definition of fine.”
You cringed.
There were scrapes on your knee. Thankfully, not both of them. Some how.
“Come on, let’s go take care of that,” Leon said softly.
He walked you back to your towel to sit before he jogged to the lifeguard tower and fetched the first aid kit.
“He’s in action,” your friend cheered from close by.
You waved them off.
Chill. He has ears you know, you thought. Not that your friend could hear you.
“Does it hurt anywhere?” He questioned and opened the kit as he approached.
“Just stings.”
“Alright.” He knelt beside you. “I’ll just need to clean it up to prevent any infections, okay?”
“Okay.”
You were surprised you could hear Leon clearly over the beating of your heart.
How different and alarmingly surprising did your day turn out? It went from your friend teasing to collecting small shark teeth to Leon treating your knee?
What was the universe trying to tell you?
“There.” Leon had finished putting a bandage on your knee. “May I check your shoulder? You took quite a hit.”
“Yeah.” You took a peek at it. “It’s gonna be sore later.”
“Probably.” He poked, prodded, and checked your arm’s mobility.
Just breathe. He’s checking you’re fine, you thought. And is really gentle. Very close.
“Any pain?”
“Nope. Just a little tender.”
Leon nodded.
“Well, putting some ice on it will ease any discomfort. If it’s more than sore tomorrow, come and let me know.”
“Okay.” You smiled. “Thank you.”
“No problem. Just watch out for flying objects.” He then added, “If I’m going to spend time with you, I’d rather you not be hurt.”
Your eyes widened.
With a wide half-smile, Leon stood up. He left the first aid kit by the tower before he went off towards the people playing volleyball.
A high-pitched squeal from your friend sealed the memory in your brain forever.

Meanwhile, back in the room. All was excited and communicated.
What else was there to do when getting refreshed? Definitely talking about Leon Kennedy, at least.
“The volleyball of destiny brought him to you,” your friend exclaimed from in front of the mirror.
“Volleyball of destiny?” You repeated, leaning against the wall. “If it’s from destiny, why is it choosing now and not the other summers we’ve been here?”
“Don’t question destiny. Just say, ‘thank you’ and go with it.”
“Thank you, destiny…for not knocking me out.”
You kept in your laugh.
“I think you mean: thank you for blessing me with the closeness of Leon Kennedy.”
“Yes, thank you.” You chuckled. “And thank you, universe, for Leon Kennedy.”
Your friend clapped dramatically.
“Finally! Something exciting’s happening.”
“Hey now,” you held up your hands. “I’m not going to be accident prone, okay? I’m an adult not a kid dodging sports at P.E. everyday.”
They turned around from the sink area.
“Look, just…at least talk to Leon more. Real sentences.”
“I’ll do my best—at being me. No promises on…no fake sentences?”
“Alright, fine. Let’s go. I’m ready for more!” They announced and lead the way out of the room.
Remaining in the air conditioning or finding shade was a well-tuned skill. Something needed around noon.
You and your friend were grabbing a bite to eat inside for lunch. Enjoying the air conditioning full-heartedly.
Thankfully, you both arrived fast enough from your room to get a table. The beach club could get pretty busy.
The two of you were absorbing the atmosphere in silence as others moved about the large room with chatter. Chairs skidding across the flooring. Kids cried for their lost fries. It was definitely summertime.
Glancing around, your eyes spotted Leon. Relaxed and tall, Leon.
In a blink of an eye, he caught your gaze.
The second you were about to avert all eye contact—he smiled.
Turning away with a smile of your own, you awaited your friend’s commentary. The wait wasn’t long. They seemed to see everything.
“If you two keep smiling at each other like that, I’m going to revert to writing fanfiction.”
“What?”
“The past two summers,” they explained, “I really thought one of you would make a move. I’m invested and impatient.”
“Chill. I’m not gonna implode without him.”
“The universe said differently today. Wait until tomorrow.”
You blinked. “That was ominous.”
