Sun In 8th House / (can be applied to Sun/Pluto aspects or Sun in Scorpio)

The sun represents our individuality, self expression, ego, and will. It shines a light wherever it is in the birth chart. The house/sign that it's in gets illuminated and put on display for ourselves and others, it shines very brightly and can be tightly wound to the way we express ourselves and/or are perceived by others.

This can be a struggle when in the 8th house because it is where we keep our secrets and want to retain a sense of privacy and secrecy. It's the most vulnerable and intimate parts of us that we prefer to keep to ourselves or people we trust deeply and unconditionally. It's the part of ourselves that undergoes the raw experience of death, transformation, and rebirth. when the sun is here, it acts like a giant, bright, beaming light onto this close and raw part of our chart that many people are able to keep hidden. think of it like a spotlight that gets shown onto the raw parts of you for the entire world to see. These people often have their secrets and private life exposed no matter how they try to avoid it. people seem to feel entitled to always be in their business and give unsolicited advice, judgements, and opinions to them. especially if the native is a woman, a lot of people can have opinions on her sexuality. she can be seen as provocative or at the least just a whole lot of people "know" things about her sex life (a rumor about body count, a bad/good sex story, nudes being leaked [if in pisces or aspected to neptune], sexuality on display in an almost unavoidable way). However, as the light (sun) shines brightly for the world to see, this includes the native as well. people with this placement have a remarkable gift of self transformation and metamorphosis. They are often aware of the deepest and darkest parts of themselves at a degree not many people are and have a great drive and determination to become the most evolved version of themselves constantly. This awareness sometimes comes without choice, and if they try to avoid it or ignore it it can fester into an inflated ego or power issues. this only comes when the native blocks the transformation journey their soul is destined to take. Pluto conjuct MC — confidence seems to be mistaken for haughtiness. I am afraid to positively view myself, in fear of being seen as cocky. I care too much about others, everything comes crashing down once I am assertive. I got shunned from a cult for being confident in my opinion for once. Stood up for what was right, and I faced the strongest rejection one could— rejection from your entire community. I was homeless, alone, faced to explore inward while the chilling cold floor of rock bottom caved in. I am afraid of the past repeating itself. I’m paranoid of others figuring me out. I am private, reserved, but care deeply about rejection. I loathe it, so I reject you first before you have the chance to do the same to me. Quite a shame, isn’t it. It hurts to be viewed as intimidating, powerful, arrogant. Oh, if only I’d allow them to get a glimpse inside my mind too see how false those perceived attributes are. I am jealous of those who don’t portray confidence as a defense mechanism… those who truly feel it. Being perceived negatively based off my outer appearance. Deep down I care immensely; you just won’t see it until we are close enough. However, I won’t allow you to get that close. The fear/risk outweighs the yearning/positives of connection. Inability to be vulnerable and trust others, for fear of past being used against me.

Always prepared for negative looks, feeling guilty and confused, feeling like I am at fault for others’ discomfort around me. Being told I look like a player, bitch, mean, rude, stuck up. It’s quite offensive, but am I just being too sensitive? I don’t know. I am quite lonesome- I interact with very few people. But even then, they only know 60% of who I am. Being gossiped about. It took my coworker a week to approach me because they were afraid of me. Apparently I gave them a mean side eye one time, and they were convinced I disliked them. I don’t remember ever noticing them. People being more so aware of your actions, because you seem intimidating and have a darker energy around you.

Struggle to connect with others with the same depth I operate at.

Capricorn 11th house/Cancer moon/7H sun in Virgo- Lonely. People pleasing. Feeling a glass wall between others, not understanding why it’s so hard to put my guard down and let others in. Wanting a community, desiring a stable friend group to care for. Daydreaming about nurturing the people I love… daydreaming about the day where I will be healed, where it will make it possible to trust others once more. Distrust. Assuming the worst in people yet feeling hurt, if they were to do the same to me. So much self reflection and guilt. Acknowledging my wrongs but lacking any self compassion.

hey y’all! in this series we’ll be covering major hard/challenging aspects (squares and oppositions) to pedro’s sun. minor challenging aspects to his sun (semi-squares/sesquiquadrates and semi-sextiles/inconjunctions) will be covered in an upcoming series, as well as soft/beneficial major and minor aspects to the rest of his planets, asteroids, nodes, and angles in his chart! i also want to note that when it comes to these aspects, they have to be examined through the lens of the entire chart, as they’re influenced by a myriad of factors within it.

sun opposite pluto (4°30’) 

– discussions surrounding plutonian themes can be heavy so content warning for violence, (childhood) trauma, death, and abuse. nothing detailed or explicit, just an advisory for those who want to avoid these topics.

with the opposition, there is a polarity between the planetary bodies and they are at odds with one another. like i mentioned in the previous post, the sun is representative of the self. it represents how we show up in the world, our ego, and our self esteem, happiness, and our vitality. pluto is considered the co-ruler of scorpio in modern astrology, and is representative of sexuality, the taboo, fears, death, control/domination, destruction and rebirth. whatever pluto hits in a chart will be the area of one’s life/personality where someone will undergo deep transformation, and also the area where they will struggle the most with themes of power and control. pluto is also a generational planet, and stays in the same sign for 12-32 years, therefore people born within that time frame will all share the same placement. 

this can imply an intense struggle to express the ego. natives with this placement tend to be very private people. they can be “people pleasers,” and may go to extreme lengths to make sure they are perceived as the “perfect” person. this is something that can be confirmed by pedro himself from his Wired 2023 interview: “i want people to feel comfortable. i don’t know how to function at the expense of anyone’s comfort level. i’m a people pleaser.” 

with the influence of pluto, there is also a need to have control over yourself and everything around you. in youth, they may have experienced adversities or trauma that resulted in them feeling helpless or powerless. they may have sought out validation and reassurance outside of themselves as a means to understand their identity, a trait that can follow them into adulthood if not addressed. as adults, they may overcompensate as a means to reclaim the power and control that they may have felt robbed of as children. 

there could have been friction surrounding their father or paternal figure growing up. they may have perceived them in youth as unapproachable, authoritative, cold, or absent. the father/paternal figure themselves may have been exposed to the more plutonic themes of life such as violence, injustice, death, or abuse, and in turn may have influenced the native either consciously or subconsciously. at worst, the native may express the same negative behaviors they were subjected to as children, even on a subconscious level. 

as i mentioned in the sun square saturn post, i’m speaking in general terms of ways that this aspect can manifest, this isn’t an implication of pedro’s relationship with his father as he’s private in terms of his family/home life. what can be inferred, though, is the plutonian themes that his father (and mother) experienced around the time pedro was born. 

pedro’s father was a fertility doctor (a very plutonian profession) and an activist during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile. as the story goes, pedro’s parents gave refuge and medical aid to Andrés Pascal Allende, nephew to Salvador Allende (the 28th president of Chile who was deposed by Pinochet) and cousin of pedro’s mother. pedro’s parents’ identities were then given up, Pinochet’s regime came after them, and they escaped and sought asylum in Denmark. 

that story is a very literal manifestation of plutonian (and martian) concepts, and i don’t believe i’d be wrong to assume that it definitely impacted pedro’s (and his siblings’) childhood. i’ll insert another quote from the Wired 2023 interview where pedro speaks about playing Joel from The Last of Us: “did you bring anything personal to the role? ‘that’s the fun part—how much you get to externalize internal darkness in a safe way and bring in things that are from your nightmares.’ such as? ‘joel’s capacity for violence, and being good at it. i didn’t get into any physical fights growing up, and definitely not as an adult. violence scares me tremendously. is it the fear of violence in general? is it the fear of your own violence?’” 

although he’s not referencing his childhood here, i do find it interesting the way that he engages not only with the idea of violence, but that it’s something that he has a deep internalized fear of, both from others and from himself. he speaks more directly on the fears he faced during his childhood in the Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso podcast: “i started to develop a fear of camouflaged military guards with machine guns, that were monitoring - you know - it’s not like they were everywhere or anything like that, i’m sure that there was a sort of normalcy of lifestyle that was achieved for all of my cousins that [are older than me] that grew up under a military dictatorship. yet the visual of that, knowing somehow at a young age that if my parents were there, they would take them away, and maybe kill them… the way that that lived almost like a kind of supernatural presence in my imagination was so weird.”

he also mentions the fears he had in relation to his parents being in danger: “i had watched so many movies, and i remember seeing Indiana Jones running across the playfield with Karen Allen in that white dress. Karen Allen looked so much like my mother, and so i started to imagine things like that, like my father and mother, hand-in-hand, like running, like they were being shot at across like a dusty, sort of, airplane field.” this can be interpreted as a manifestation of pedro potentially feeling helpless or “powerless” in his youth, knowing that his parents’ lives were in jeopardy at some point, not having the capacity to do anything about it as a child, and struggling with fear and anxiety as a result.

on a lighter note but not really because ain’t shit light about pluto, let’s discuss how this placement can display itself in adulthood. we touched on it earlier in regards to the “people-pleaser” aspect, but this can also manifest as having extremely high standards for oneself. if the native feels like they’re not meeting these standards, or if others think negatively of them (usually those who they’re close to), it can lead to feelings of low self-worth. in the context of pedro potentially setting high standards for himself, here’s a line from pedro’s Esquire 2023 interview from Bella Ramsey: “‘i’ve learned from him to be kinder to myself, which is a thing he’s not very good at, in terms of the pressure he puts on himself,’ says ramsey. ‘but i guess that’s something that he taught me hypocritically, then i taught to him back.’”

aside from low self-worth, when those with this aspect anticipate disappointment from themselves or others, they may engage in self-destructive behaviors such as stubbornness, addiction, possessiveness, jealousy, or spying. the native may also be subject to these behaviors from those around them, as the internalized and/or externalized struggle with these behaviors will show up most in interpersonal relationships, both platonic and romantic.

in romance, they can be addicted or obsessive towards their partners, or attract partners that behave this way towards them. they can also attract partners that are more spiritually inclined or into occult practices. they are very loyal and put their all into their relationships with their partners, friends, and family, but this can manifest negatively as there may be an inability to leave unhealthy relationships, or walk away from negative people in their lives.  

working alongside this aspect means that the native must unlearn resistance to change and relinquish the desire to control the things that are beyond them. rebirth will be a constant theme in their lives. pedro has also brought up in his Esquire 2023 interview the feeling that he’s “died so many deaths,” and that’s something that people not only with this aspect can attest to, but people with any prominent pluto, saturn, scorpio, capricorn, 8th house, and 12th house placements can as well. in the context of this aspect, accepting one’s own imperfections is vital. it’s a lifelong practice, but getting a point of being able to at least accept change and understanding there is no such thing as constantly being in control will grant these natives the ability to unlock their full potential and put them into positions of power. 

this can also grant them access to leadership roles, which they’ll accept gladly, as a byproduct of their desire for control is a resistance to authority. they don’t like being told what to do and would rather be the one giving the orders. pedro spoke on this himself in a 2017 interview with ShortList magazine where he refers to being a waiter: “first, i wasn’t very good at it. second, i would always prioritize acting over waiting tables, and third, i’m just not very good with authority.”

there’s a strong need for deep connection and understanding of themselves and others as well, they enjoy uncovering secrets and can be drawn to spiritual/occult practices, and may be very intuitive/psychic themselves. but they can struggle with trusting others, being vulnerable, and opening up due to the pain and resentment they may still harbor from painful past experiences. 

people with this placement can end up being very influential. typically, these people are either extremely loved, or extremely hated. those who express this aspect in a healthy way may be perceived as great mentors, very caring and nurturing people, trustworthy and honest, while at the same time having an air about them that is mysterious or seductive. while they are typically kind-hearted and have good intentions for others, they still have the capacity to be authoritative and put people in check when needed. 

active self development and growth will work wonders for these natives, acknowledging and working through the “shadow” parts of their identities can result in positive transformation. while these natives struggle with the internalized repercussions of what they’ve experienced in life, they still have the ability to impact the world and those around them for the better. they have to work with and not against themselves, and learn to balance the “light” and “darkness” they harbor within their spirits, and not to operate from one place while neglecting the other.

i like to refer to aspects and placements like these as the "you not finna tell me what the fuck to do" indicators. with the natal aspects, these are typically the type of people who like to push against the boundaries just to see how far they can go, and enjoy ruffling other peoples' feathers for fun. they're also visionaries, and tend to prioritize their individuality above all else and enjoy encouraging others to feel empowered as well. on the other hand, the synastry aspects can indicate a strong level of physical attraction and sexual compatibility, when they're afflicted it can very much so lead to power struggles, with mars/pluto being the one attempting to assert some form of dominance or control over venus. how that ends up playing out depends on the context of the individual natal charts of those involved, personally i'd rather eat a denim jacket than let somebody (especially a man) tell me what to do, but i digress.

3H synastry is so sweet and so underrated, probably because it's not a house that people typically look at for an indication of "romance", but i feel like communication is an integral part of relationships that (clearly) nobody really takes into account. moon and mercury in the 3H can be indicative of giving/receiving words of affirmation with someone, as well as an ease in not only expressing your emotions to someone but having a very strong intellectual connection to them. it could also be indicative of having a strong bond with their siblings or immediate family as well. i also mentioned sun in pisces and taurus in the composite chart because the production of this song is so ethereal, and the lyrics are very domestic in a sense? i feel like it's representative of the spiritual connection and compassion that pisces brings, alongside the pleasure and security found in building a home with the person you love.
