London 82 "I hoped to repeat my experience of Christopher Street in New York, except now in London and in colour. It wasn’t to be. Even what appeared to be a concentration of gay life was not dense enough to create its own public space, so I was getting either huge gaps between people or a crowd of very mixed people. I decided to abandon an exclusively gay subject and started concentrating on whatever caught my eye - migrants, people of colour, gay men, elderly people out and about on their own." - Sunil Gupta, Photographer. In the early 1980's Sunil Gupta enrolled at the ‘Royal College of Art’ in London, where he had access to colour negative processing facilities. He took to the streets of the capital in search of the centres gay London life around Earl’s Court, King’s Road and the West End. This series of photographs taken by Gupta recently resurfaced through his process of archiving his past images. It provides a rich and varied catalogue of Sloane Rangers, New Romantic and pensioners who once roamed London's streets. The Queer Feeling of Tomorrow explores themes of doubt, resilience, and political agency through the work of six contemporary artists: Sunil Gupta (London UK), John Hanning (Brooklyn NY), Shan Kelley (Montreal), Julia Martin (Ottawa), David Poolman (Toronto) and Laurel Woodcock (Toronto).

The Queer Feeling of Tomorrow suggests the playful uncertainty of our personal and political futures in a supposedly “post AIDS” historical moment. The exhibition expresses a double play of optimism and irony, tracing a spirit of life affirmation that is at the same time a form of restless doubt. It also presents a shift in art practice away from the demonstrative and the spectacular, in effort to locate the complex and oftentimes inexplicable excesses of identity and community within the everyday.

London 82 “I arrived in Earl’s Court because I’d heard that was the London equivalent of the West Village, and actually it was nothing like it. There was a brief gay renaissance around Habitat on the King’s Road. There used to be a café on the first floor which became a gay hangout, until they wised up to it and actively tried to stop you from coming in.” - Sunil Gupta, Photographer. In 1976, Sunil Gupta began shooting a series that would shape his career. Born in New Delhi and raised in Montreal, the photographer was in New York studying with Lisette Model at the time, spending weekends in the West Village. His black and white images of men on Christopher Street have since come to define a celebratory time for the gay community, photographed after Stonewall uprising but before the Aids crisis. Moving to London a few years later, he sought to revisit the concept, swapping out the West Village for west London. The prejudice was potent: while sex between men had long been legal, cruising had effectively been criminalised. Unable to pursue his original idea - Gupta broadened the project’s scope, focusing on the people he encountered in-between lectures at the ‘Royal College of Art’.
