It’s #superfriendssunday again! This week, @funkcroci asked us to pick a great Various Artists album. I chose my favorite early reggae compilations: a sampling of Trojan Records best-ofs and the soundtrack of The Harder They Come. I don’t listen to a lot of compilations, but I listen a lot to these because they collect songs that just don’t come on LPs, many of them by bands that only ever released a handful of 45s before disappearing. This week on #superfriendssunday , we’re turning it up to 11! @yakido asked us to pick an album to play loud. I decided on a band famous for their ear splitting live shows. Especially in their 80s heyday, Dinosaur Jr played so loud you could barely stay in the room. I saw em a couple years ago, and they have mellowed considerably, but they’re still an incredible group. On #superfriendssunday this week, @lbshel asked us for an artist that inspired other artists! I instantly thought of how two of my favorite artists of this century, Janelle Monáe and Lizzo, both often sound like reincarnations of the mighty Prince. I just finished season 1 of Ted Lasso (late to the party), and I loved Higgins’s horrendous little jazz beard, so I’m posting someone who wore his hip tiny beard a lot better. Charles Mingus, one of the finest jazz composers and bassists of all time, and by all accounts a man even crazier than his chaotic music. For #superfriendssunday this week, @jrvinylcollection asked us to pick a girl power record! I’m all about this theme, I roll my eyes hard at those who say women can’t rock, or worse, are pleasantly surprised when they can and think that now they’re enlightened. But women aren’t the exception. And if Patti Smith didn’t show you, PJ Harvey will. This record, produced by the inimitable Steve Albini, is one of my favorites of the immediate post-Nirvana alternative boom. It’s her second and last with the trio that recorded her debut… those two albums are my favorite PJs, and this one is the better of the two IMO. #superfriendssunday is here! @skymax.music.travel.style asked us to pick our favorite record turning 40 this year. Best of 1982 was a no brainer for me, despite so many great candidates. Nebraska is sheer magic, the album that started my Springsteen obsession, a dark masterpiece of minimalism. Movement of Jah people… Today on #superfriendssunday , @urmsonvinylfan is taking us back to 1977! A lot of great albums released that year, as you’ll see in the others’ picks. But only one possibility for me. Exodus is Marley’s masterpiece, one of the greatest reggae records ever made, and (though I haven’t tried to make such a list in a long time) definitely in my top ten albums of all time.
