The oldest piece of lore that I have from Iris, before it was intertwined with Iron (before Iron existed actually) is the Ampyrs. Monster hunters with practically superhuman abilities.
Does this sound familiar? Yeah thats cause originally they were literally just knock-off witchers. Igni, steel and silver swords, cat eyes, the works.
Originally I was okay with them just being knockoffs because this world was primarily a dnd setting, and I just wanted to get a stone set down to build the world around.
Nowadays, the Ampyrs are far more detached from witchers. They still have some of the main things, simple spells, silver weapons (but typically only 1 main weapon instead of 2) and enhanced strength and senses.
But on a grander level, they’re pretty different. Ampyrs are driven to hunt the things that go bump in the night for a religious purpose, as their gods “Hau Vold Svize” (literally translated to, “The Wild Hunt” but I got this one first from norse myth, fuckin sue me) kept the people of Voldeheim (their home country) safe in the past.
The Ampyrs, to the people of Voldeheim, and the followers of Voldism, are kind of like demigods, emissaries of the Wild Hunt that carry out their will across the world at large. And that primarily involves hunting monsters, breaking curses, that kind of stuff.
While the Ampyrs may “work for” the entirety of the Hunt, they typically have a patron god that they revere highest. This mostly depends on the region they’re from.
The Hunters of Breka are kind of like the jack of all trades, they don’t do anything better than everyone else, but they’re very adaptable.
The Hunters of Kinje specialise in their weapons. Their magic, while useful, rarely gets used as they prefer to just stab, slash, or smash their enemies.
The Hunters of Faljar are all lycanthropes, and they like to get their jobs done through brute force. Strength is their speciality.
The Hunters of Vinris are like the “tank” archetype. Like 99% of them carry a shield with them and they specialise in defense and healing. If they can get something done without killing, that’s the way they prefer it, but they are no slouch when it comes to combat. Ships of Vinrisian Ampyrs like to patrol the waters of Voldeheim to catch and get rid of pirates or other nasties.
Finally, the Hunters of Onðra are scholars first and foremost. They own and oversee one of the most reputable libraries in the world as the local governments do not and cannot censor the information within. Many of them like to spend their field time researching as well as fulfilling contracts. (Cause they’re fucking nerds).
I have a lot more lore on Ampyrs and Voldeheim but this is about as much as I felt comfortable holding you all at gunpoint to read.
