Tiffany Wildlife Area

The van drove us to the bayou side of the river and dropped us across the the street from a Tiffany Wildlife Area sign.  One of the A-named guides assured me that I would learn to cross the main channel at the end of the trip instead. Someone lost their chapstick, but no one claimed it.

We were directed to watch the muddy banks for otters and muskrats, or their slides and burrows. I tried to elicit some bird knowledge from one of the guides but he promptly suggested I save my questions for for the guy who dropped us off in the van, if he is around later. He suggested I read Aldo Leopold.

There was group of four whose kayak cluster I continued to accidentally interrupt for most of our three hours drifting around the water channels. I tried not to listen to their vulnerable exchanges, to push past them to the book editor and writer who sipped from a vaporizer and stayed ahead of the front guide the entire trip.

Eagles, the size of penguins posted many of the intersections and no one made too big of a deal about it, which I was grateful for. Mostly, we passed under shallow-rooted maple trees and occasional basswood trees, their branches like arms waving ahead of the reveal of some great magician or beauty, while guides tenderly pointed out sand bars, fallen logs and pulling currents.

I drove home, glancing back at the full moon, full of regret that I had not asked the guides to dinner. I would take either of them for a life partner.

Sciurus carolinensis - Eastern Gray Squirrel

The species has a quite varied repertoire of vocalizations, including a squeak similar to that of a mouse, a low-pitched noise, a chatter, and a raspy "mehr mehr mehr". Other methods of communication include tail-flicking and other gestures, including facial expressions. Tail flicking and the "kuk" or "quaa" call are used to ward off and warn other squirrels about predators as well as to announce when a predator is leaving the area. Squirrels also make an affectionate coo-purring sound that biologists call the "muk-muk" sound. This is used as a contact sound between a mother and her kits and, in adulthood, by the male when he courts the female during mating season.

Front yard: East to West: Swamp Bur Oak, Bur Oak, Driveway, #BurOak, 2 #ChinkapinOak, 2 #SwampWhiteOak Trees. To the North from East to West: Grafted female Ruby #AmericanPersimmon 🍊Driveway, #KiefferPear 🍐 #GrannySmithApple 🍏#WolfRiverApple 🍎 #LibertyApple 🍎To the North is a #MethleyPlum 🍑Tree. - On the West Side of my yard: 5 - 1.5" #NorthernRedOak Trees that the Big Whitetail Bucks in my area love best to use for overhead licking branches and will form a scrape line. The tall green grass around the perimeter of my yard is warm season grasses: #BigBlueStem 🌾#Indiangrass 🌾 Cave-in-Rock #Switchgrass 🌾 and my lawn: Kentucky Bluegrass, "Troy" Forage variety. - On the North Side of my house: Hughes Hybrids #Soybeans 🌱  there is also a grafted female Meader American Persimmon 🍊and grafted female Weber American Persimmon🍊 that only the American Persimmon rootstock lived and I will graft a female onto later. Next row a #RedfreeApple 🍎that I planted this spring 2019 to replace a Yellow Transparent Apple that died and Pink Lady Apple. Next row is a #ChestnutCrabapple 🍒 and #WhitneyCrabapple 🍒 tree also. On the West side of my house there is some succulent Giant Dutch White🍀#Clover #LadinoClover 🍀and Red clover☘ and from North is a #EnterpriseApple 🍎and I planted a #Dolgo Crabapple🍒 this Spring 2019.
