Here are a few things you should avoid in your first chapter!
• Slow opening. This gets the reader nowhere and won’t want to encourage them to keep reading.
• Cliché opening. Please don’t have your main character (MC) stand in front of a mirror and describe themselves from head to toe…
• Info-dumping. Reading every detail about the world you’ve created or even about a character isn’t exciting. Don’t toss readers every bit of information. Instead, sprinkle it in.
• No clear POV character. Don’t confuse readers by not establishing the narrator/who they’re reading from.
At Earley Editing, we offer a First Chapter Critique service and this list consists of many of the openings we initially read. It’s one of our favorite services, though, because we get to help writers improve their first chapters for agents and those query trenches!
Many writers on a budget opt for a manuscript evaluation over developmental editing. This allows them to get professional oversight for their work, but leaves them to make concrete changes on their own. If you've ever found yourself wondering things like how to fill in multiple plot holes, or whether the order of your chapters is best for absorbing the educational information you're trying to impart upon your reader, a manuscript evaluation can be a faster, lower-cost way to get answers to those questions along with remedies to those issues.
Buku Buat Semua (Books For Everyone) is a non-profit initiative that provides quality storybooks for children in rural, marginalized areas of Indonesia.
All work involved is volunteer-based, including stories, illustrations, social media content, and more. I contribute to this project as the Book Editor.
This is an ongoing project that started in February 2023.

Boring scenes are a writer’s downfall. Often times, they are caused by writer’s block or not knowing how to go about writing a certain scene while maintaining a good pace. Well, we’re here to give you 10 tips on how you can fix that scene that’s lacking oomph.

For various reasons, this is now a hot topic. I'm putting my favorites here, please add more in your reblogs. I'm not pointing to Microsoft Word because I hate it.
Super customizable to make it look pretty, all toolbars hide to be as non-distracting as possible. Can make typewriter sounds as you type, and you can set daily wordcount goals. Saves in OpenDocumentFormat. Combine with something like Dropbox for Cloud Backup.
The lovechild of so many writers. Too many things to fiddle with for me, but I'm sure someone else can sing its praises. You can put the database folder into a Dropbox folder for cloud saving (but make sure to always close the program before shutting down).
Web-based:
4.
Reedsy bookeditor (https://reedsy.com/write-a-book) Browser based, works on Firefox on Android. Be aware that they also have a TOS that forbids pornography on publicly shared documents.
My current writing program. Just enough features to be helpful, not so many that I start fiddling. Writing is chapter based, exports to docx, epub, pdf. You can share chapters (for beta reading) with other people registered at Reedsy.
5.
Novelpad (https://novelpad.co/) Browser based.
Looks very promising, there's a youtuber with really informative videos about it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHN8TnwjG1g). I wanted to love it, but the editor didn't work on Firefox on my phone. It might now, but I'm reluctant to switch again.

So, this is my list. Please add more suggestions in reblogs.
