Soon after John Y. Brown, Jr. was elected governor of Kentucky, he and his wife, sportscaster Phyllis George, discovered Cave Hill Place, a romantic antebellum mansion in Lexington. With the assistance of R. Wayne Jenkins, the home, built in 1821 by a nephew of Patrick Henry, was totally renovated and decorated in a matter of six short weeks. Lofty pink oaks and maples provide shade for the neo-Federal style residence; its Georgian portico was a 1916 addition.

Munin wedged herself between the roof and headrest, and looked at the views.
The morning clouds were beautiful.
We drove to town for errands, Munin making many friends as usual.
The sunset going home was even better.
Munin settled on the headrest again, this time to sleep.

A few years ago, someone suggested queerstake all pray for Oaks, that his heart would be healed and softened, that he would be enlightened. I think we should bring that back.

13 Wolf Oaks in the Ohio Hills. My finished project for Fun-a-Day 2023. This piece is a collection of embroidered leaves representing 13 large oak trees I used in a research project from 2018. The trees I studied had grown in the open in pastures and influenced the development of the forest that regenerated after the land was abandoned from agriculture. Several species are represented: white, chestnut, post, chinkapin, and black oaks.
Working with metallic floss on this scale was very challenging but rewarding. The use of gold reflects both the warm colors of oak forest leaf litter and suggests the leaves themselves as ceremonial objects, tying into the experience of research as ritual.
The leaves were collected in Winter 2018/19 and were therefore present, either on the trees or in the litter layer, while I collected data for this project.
It showed as part of the Fun-a-Day art show in February with a companion booklet guide to each leaf/tree and a copy of my pasture tree ecology paper from 2020.
