everyone's all like "why would emet-selch put all this effort into recreating amaurot" like he did it bc he's the most miserable man to ever walk the earth. his status as an ancient has granted him access to depths of patheticness heretofore unknown to man. so he made a sulking corner that was also an entire city. because he is stupid.

Which of the tank classes would you recommend based on either how fun they are to play or how viable they are?
Classes in FF14 really are more about what you vibe with. They're all viable, they're all reasonably fun to play. Your choice is gonna depend on aesthetics.
You wanna be a stalwart goody two shoes? Paladin. You wanna be a strong tough rage monster? Warrior. You wanna be an edgy badass? Dark Knight. You wanna be a cool swift bastard who has a gun sword? Gunbreaker.

Dragonflight plans?
Good Morning Newsnerd! I feel as if to properly answer this question I have to give context. Back in May I was bored, burnt out on games, and was thumbing through steam sales when I found a game. It's called Sea of Thieves. If you're unfamiliar with it, it's a PVPVE game where for the most part anything that you can think of can and will happen. I started watching streamers play it and became friends with one and expressed to them that I missed streaming (I used to Stream EvE Online way back in the day in twitch's early years. They responded with 'you have the personality for it, I think you should. So I did.
I set up a Twitter specifically for streaming, began to network, make friends and learn the ends and outs. The community support and outpouring of love was immense, swift, and incredible. I hit affiliate in a matter of 2 weeks.
In my private life, away from gaming and streaming, I began to fling myself head-first into a hobby called Astrophotography as well. If you're not familiar with that it's essentially the practice of taking a telescope finding a target in space and taking a picture of it. Sounds simple, but it's far far from it.
Its amazing how much wind plays a role, an unstable atmosphere, tripod, etc. Indeed my first attempt at it was what many would call a colossal failure. And by failure I mean I didn't do anything right
Tumblr media
That was my first attempt at taking a picture of the Andromeda Galaxy. Im in the right area, but not only was my camera not in focus, but I set exposures for way too long. Fast forward a few weeks later, after many long discussions with other photographers in a discord, soaking up as much information as I could and I finally did it
Tumblr media
This time I was somewhat in focus but Andromeda is not centered, it's in the bottom right nearly out of the image. Look for a smear of light that looks like someone took a finger and wiped it across the night sky. This single image is 50 stacked together, 4 second exposures at ISO 1600.
So excited, and indeed hyped I took a paycheck and upgraded my system with a new telescope, a lens that can really reach out and an adapter to plant my DSLR into the eyepiece of the telescope. What do the pictures look like? Stay tuned to find out.
Whew, that was a lot! But I felt as if to explain if I'll be playing Dragonflight a mere 'Nah I love Final Fantasy XIV' is simply not good enough. I do love FF14, and I still love wow. Admittedly I'm cautiously optimistic and I'm keeping tabs on it, but there are literally not enough hours in the day currently in my life to jump in at launch. If I do return to WoW (or FF14 for that matter) I want to be able to give the game(s) its due course and actually play.
That and I'm sure I'm gonna have to find a new guild if I come back, mine on Moonguard by now mostly migrated to FF14, and a few of them I no longer talk to (Prety sure I'm not even in the guild discord anymore)
Anyway.
TLDR; I want to play but I simply don't have the time, I may wait a few months, but I'm 100% unsure as of this moment.
thank you for the ask @newsnerd-ooc and I truly hope you’re doing well.

Don't really play games that much, but have a pic of my FF14 character! His name is ThunderGore aka the Black Devil Lord! He makes swift work of his enemies with his big sword, called Sisyphus, this is because it is futile for his enemies to fight him, because they are so weak compared to him!

How would a character (made by you) based on Kratos differ than the one you based on Corvo?
The personality I’d put into it. When I make characters I don’t just do looks, I give them a personality, backstory and history. Like what personality traits. I don’t know Kratos very well but he seems to have Sad Dad traits from what I’ve seen which is part of what goes into Corvo anyway lmao
T’alar for example I may have taken visual hints from Taylor Swift but I imbued her with some personality traits similar to characters like Yang from RWBY. Overconfident, heart of gold, more depth then apparent on first glance, etc.
See like I have character archetypes and templates I start with. Yukale (from both wow and ff14) started out as the battle snarker archetype and then evolves from there. Aveline always starts out as the staunch defender paladin type. Noble and good. And while that base remains at her core she of course grows and changes over time playing. I think I once wrote up a lot of my archetypes I typically start with (there’s the lone hunter lady who’s a bit on the solemn and quiet side, etc) but I’m not sure where it is.
Holy shit I just realized my male characters typically follow the Logan archetype. Loner who’s not really a loner, fiercely protective of their found family/love/children/etc.
TBH the “corvo” is too big and not lanky enough but I couldn’t handle making him a hrothgar like I wanted to (since my wow version is a worgen lmao) and I didn’t want to make him a hyur midlander and male miqo’te are weird. Also my wife wanted him much much taller than the lady she’s going to be duoing with him on XD We like the tol/smol trope NGL. Aveline is much taller than Mhin, both my buns are taller than hers, even t’alor, my shortest, is quite a few inches over her au’ra.
But I still kind of want to make him a Hrothgar but something about the way Hrothgar move bother me. Though maybe I’ll try again sometime.

I know that like always I am saying this into the void bc fans of weird horror podcasts are not gonna also be getting into bright sparkly fantasy mmos but the THEMES. alright. tonally aesthetically they’re totally different but malev and ff14 are shaking hands on the “in the face of my impending demise, i will still fight to exist” / “to find joy even as darkness descends, and amidst deepest despair, light everlasting” hill. the vibes. the continually tested faith in humanity. the stubborn determination to give people a tomorrow. can anyone hear me.

tfw i have so many fun ideas for the crossover but the venn diagram of ff14 players and malev listeners is two non-overlapping circles so there are approximately zero people capable of perceiving my shrimp-colors-ass vision

i feel bad for zero bc her first introduction to "here's how humans interact and relate to each other" was zenos viator fucking galvus, who is quite literally the worst possible example you could imagine, and then IMMEDIATELY from him she jumped to the wol and scions, who are only sort of an improvement. zero out here going "ok so when you like someone you either want to die for them OR die beside them OR kill them OR possibly all of the above" and jullus (only normal man in the vicinity) is like i'm begging you to please stop writing down notes

in terms of personality it's easier to see him as emet-selch but. but what if kayne as elidibus tho... leans on the wall. bangs my head against it gently

i think it is actually great and fascinating that fandaniel and zenos teamed up for as long as they did bc they're both guys who came back to life and are now trying to die again, but one of them is doing it bc he finds no meaning in existence except suffering and cannot bear the thought of living any longer, and the other one is doing it bc he just really fucking enjoyed dying the first time

apologies to all of my followers but i'm gonna continue being insane abt ff14. no end in sight. hope everyone bothered by that has blocked the tag by now
anyway anytime i say literally anything abt zenos' narrative position i feel the need to preface it with a VERY large "ymmv dependent on your wol" disclaimer bc even if it's got nothing to do with shana and is entirely canon based i know the degree of like. reciprocity there. varies wildly. anyway pretend i said that better the important thing is i'm yes-anding his bit. anyway
ANYWAY i think zenos and ardbert are really great narrative parallels.
like, to both of them, the wol is their only friend and equal. both of them share or believe they share a kind of experience and mentality with you that basically nobody else could understand. both of them show up after all of your other friends/allies have been completely stomped by an expansion's final boss, while you're the last one dragging yourself forward, to be the one who helps you to victory. they both, in some sense, give their life to you (ardbert gives his remaining aether to put your soul back together, zenos cuts his head off rather than live outside your fight and then rides to the end of reality for you later if you don't want to count that one). they both get their dead body possessed by elidibus, which is more of a "two nickels" thing than a total parallel but i think it's fun so i'm putting it here anyway. they both serve as both enemies and allies at different points in the story without changing their core mission statement much at all.
they are also diametric opposites. obviously.
i think to a degree they are expressions/mirrors of two semi-opposing sides of the wol. The Hero and The Hunter. ardbert is the other half of your soul, the warrior of light, and by his own admission his favorite part of the job was never the battle itself, it was the calm that came afterwards. the warmth and security of knowing they'd helped and protected people. he lives and dies by those bonds - he's got a whole party behind him, and they all choose to give their lives twice over to try and give norvrandt a tomorrow. his stand with you is him remembering that fact, reaffirming his desire to help them despite the struggles. he cares deeply abt the world, abt giving them hope. your fight against hades is a manifestation of that determination. you'll drag each other up no matter how much it hurts because goddammit this world is yours and you are not going to stand by and let it die.
zenos by contrast is nothing so lofty. he does not give a flying fuck about people's hopes, or pain, or any of their emotions, or the general concept of tomorrow. he is the part of the wol that is the hunter, the person they become in the heat of battle that scares the shit out of their enemies. the one who finds joy in their work not bc they know it's bringing hope and light to the world but purely bc of the thrill of it. you are an adventurer—you wouldn't do what you do if you didn't find some pleasure in it. his bond with you is completely inextricable from your capacity for violence. he throws off the endsinger's despair not bc he gives you hope but bc hope and despair are foreign objects to him. he reminds you that your friends, the star, the hopes and dreams of reality are all outside the room, and inside it is just you, and your enemy, and you are nothing before you are death to your enemies. so why the fuck is it not dead yet.
like, you could make the case that it's the Best and the Worst, but i think that's only circumstantially true bc again: the wol couldn't be the wol, couldn't keep fighting and winning the way they do, if that part of them wasn't there. but i DO think it is a very present duality, that they reflect matching and opposite parts of you—the part that fights for love of the world, and the part that does it for love of the game.

ok i think the best part of the drk quests overall though is the point whenever you open up your journal midway through and abruptly realize that your wol has started taking notes in a completely different voice

other shb thing i think about a LOT is the immediate post-innocence aftermath.
and i mean the IMMEDIATE aftermath. bc like, when you wake up, you're not STILL in the arena. they moved you. and it's not like they could teleport. which means they definitely had to backtrack down the mountain and through that crowd of people who were all so excited to see them win, like, half an hour ago.
and from the pov of those people. i mean like. they were all feeling pretty good about themselves i bet. especially the eulmorans bc what a great way to kick off their new "not being dickheads" routine, but all of them must have been kind of basking in the afterglow of that cool moment of all working together, all of norvrandt coming together, and now they were all just waiting for that to pay off. and it very nearly does! for a moment they see the light flicker, catch a glimpse of that lost beauty of the night sky—
—aaaand then the light comes back.
that must have been a collective "oh shit" moment by itself. like why did that happen?? did you LOSE?? is vauthry not dead? did you mis-aim and now there's a DIFFERENT lightwarden running around? why did it fade for a moment only to return? they were getting so hopeful, too! what the hell! and they're just all standing around saying things of this nature to each other, for, however long it takes your group to get out of the arena and back down the talos and all that, which like. then their next clue as to wtf happened is probably thancred hauling your broken body down the mountain, party visibly down a member. and clearly they didn't actually EXPLAIN it to anyone, so the scions just collectively went ahaha no yeah no, vauthry's dead, no you're safe just listen uhh. can you like. airship. now. please. "where's the exarch" (manic little laugh) OH HE IS nnnnot coming. don't. worry. about it.
like did they have the collective bandwidth to make up a good enough excuse or did they just sort of yell LOOK AT US, DO YOU THINK WE CAN STOP AND CHAT until people moved
