Field Notes: MADCHIMP Syndemes & Disinformation

Okay so what does that mean? Sydemes at first seem like a very meta (almost tongue-in-cheek) way to resolve conflicting pantheons in Delta Green by splitting them off into different subgenres. But there's something more there to tug on, and the Handler's Guide gave me permission so lemme pull this apart.

Running with the text, mythos entities of comparable / conflicting role and origin are not necessarily cognates of each other or "retcons". Rather, much like how separate completely unrelated viruses may generate similar symptoms, the Outer Gods and the Great Old Ones should not be seen as individual world spanning entities shared equally among conflicting cult canons but as temporal "symptoms" of different sorts of "dimensional viruses." You don't get sick with a case of the "cough, fever, aches, and pains" but the flu. Similarly, the world doesn't have separate cases of "Hastur, Cthulhu, and Azoth" as individual entities but a greater illness encapsulated within a Syndeme. Something about intelligent perception of the material world is prone to manifesting a sort of reality virus we barely understand, which can be tracked and identified by what archetypal entities manifest around it, susceptible groups, and common transmission vectors. Archetypes shared between Syndemes aren't one-to-one matchups of a single entity, but convergently emerge.

A Cthulhu-like entity, for example, evolved separately in multiple Syndemes because something in the proliferation of the syndemes require a "dreamer-god" in that syndeme's thought-form pantheon. Something about the role of a Cthulhu entity is essential for its transmission vector. These symptoms and by extension the spread can be temporarily alleviated but without addressing the underlying syndeme they will only reoccur again and again. Thus, if you'll forgive me--

Alright. So. Lets connect that to the last few field notes. The Delta Green mythos universe is, unambiguously, a world of unfathomable horror and limitless suffering. Characters are symbolically forced to be reborn into its material reality as players go through the process of shaping, breaking, and killing off their characters. It is, in about as literal a way as it can be, the "Black Iron Prison" in Phillip K. Dick's Valis.

If the entirety of the Black Iron Prison is personified as a Lovecraftian twist on the Demiurge, then these syndemes groups identified by MADCHIMP are the disease poisoning it from the inside as it continues to splinter off and fragment into a world of greater and greater entropy... Until eventually, one day, the disease reaches its terminal state. The stars will align, and the Outer Gods will be given free reign to sunder the whole of creation as you see fit...

Strictly speaking agent, some gnostic sects believe that the only way to reach oneness and break the cycle of pain is in the destruction of the Iron Prison. If that's true... Wouldn't serving these forces hasten our path to salvation? Are they not angels come to free us from the Iron Cage and usher us home? To free us from death?

And with strange aeons even death may die.

(Also at the end of the day, this is an insular, decaying Delta Green removed from the privileges it enjoyed when it had legitimacy but before the Cell system emerged to organize the disparate groups out there. My interpretation of Delta Green is a splinter that looks more like a cult at this point than anything else, clinging to its tribal knowledge and theories that it believes separates themselves from other splinter groups emerging from OD FREEBIRD in the 1970s. This could all just be bullshit, unproven theories from half-finished works either lost entirely by the 90s or told to leave at the door and burn before joining up with the Cell system.)
