the land of the fearful and the home of the slave-latest excerpt from “killing justice: the taste of knives”

America is NOT the land of the free and the home of the brave.

We ARE the land of the fearful and the home of the slave.

And until we white Americans and all the right wing enablers of us whites can begin to own and acknowledge our fear of losing our privilege, which has resulted from four hundred years of systemic oppression of blacks and other people of color and which began with our genocide of the indigenous inhabitants of this land, true healing cannot even begin.

For there is a world of difference between “adversity”, which we all have our share of, and “systemic oppression”, which people of color have been historically and to the present day remain disproportionately subjected to, as Marisol Ibanez reminded us of in Mic Sessions tonight.

So my plea to all my fellow white Americans and all the right wing enablers of white privilege is “own and acknowledge and begin to openly admit your fears of losing your unearned power”. 

Then, and only then, can true healing even begin to emerge from this current tragic state of affairs we are engulfed in.
