My thoughts on this season of SYTYCD (pull up a chair it’s a long one)
You know…I was intrigued by this format change for SYTYCD. The show has been through several format changes over the years, not to mention endless changes in judges, changes in stages, changes in choreographers and all of that combined made me tune in less and less. To be honest I always thought the original stage was the best because there was so much to utilize, the stairs, the balconies, the shape of the stage being round making for great cinematic shots so when the next stage came that’s really when I started losing interest and I’ve never managed to watch a full season after that. Always tried though.
Full disclosure, I am from Canada, and for a minute we also had So You Think You Can Dance Canada, with an exact replica of the original stage, and I thought the shows first season blew the American version out of the water cause Canadian television wasn’t as censored as the U.S so the choreography was allowed to be a lot more bold and whenever the American judges came over their reactions were priceless, so we got really spoiled 😅 (shout out Nico who won season one from my hometown Montreal). Unfortunately funding for Canadian television has always been literal ass so it unfortunately ended far too early as a result.
Back to my point though, when I seen the trailer for this season I was like “hmm okay the premise isn’t bad, it’s cool they’ll be doing these different challenges to prepare them for real world situations” and I’ve tuned in every week.
Obviously I miss the original format, I missed the couples, the crowds, and I hate that it’s not live, hate that it’s strictly the judges pick instead of Americas. But honestly if they had slapped a different name on the show, I’d be on board cause as a dance show, it’s a pretty cool premise. It’s like a crash course in what new aspiring dancers will experience in the real world, and also a competition sprinkled with some reality television aspects that has them living in a house together and we’re getting windows into relationships being formed and families reuniting. It’s kinda like if MTV’s DanceLife and SYTYCD were combined.
Here’s my problem though.. up until now I’ve kinda been operating under the assumption that these are all dancers relatively new to the game who have yet to experience the things these challenges are showing them. Least it’s certainly been framed that way. And I think it’s actually true for the majority because most of them are so young and talking about how they’ve never done anything like this before. And I’ve not followed any of their social media but tonight I creeped some of them and I see…Madison literally just did the Chromatica Ball Tour with Lady Gaga??!?…she was a back up dancer for Mariah Carey like a decade ago?!
And unless I missed it, I don’t think she’s brought up any of this on the show itself cause I’d like to think I would remember something as big as dancing for Lady Gaga on a stadium tour around the world… I’ve been rooting for Madison from the jump because she has that rock star vibe and the confidence that none of the other dancers has, she dances through injuries like a boss and now I’m sitting here feeling some type of way like “damn…this ain’t even a fair fight though”
This woman has a resume the rest of the top ten would kill for. She’s danced in movies, on tour, and does videos with Brian Friedman on social media regularly…
I just think if they’re gonna continue this format, they need to even out the playing field, and aim for dancers who are new to the game and hungry to get exactly where Madison already has been for ten years, girl was dancing for Mariah Carey when she was a teenager and danced on a world tour that’s like…days away from being shown on HBO with Lady Gaga who let’s be real, is arguably one of the best mentors you can have on being fearless in your craft.

Today’s 2014 Best Dancer is Joziah German from Prodigy Dance and Performing Arts Centre who was the Las Vegas Mini Male winner. He would go onto be one of few 3 time winners (Teen 2018, Senior 2020) and he also made top 3 in 2016 and 2017. That makes him one of few dancers who have placed in all 4 ages. Since winning he has performed on Dancing with the Stars, World of Dance, SYTYCD The Next Generation and Little Big Shots. He also won multiple YAGP Grand Prix Awards. He currently attends Julliard and has done choreography for dancers including Hudson Pletcher.

I was a huge SYTYCD fan in its first few seasons (it lost its lustre along the way, as most reality shows do) and Twitch was one the most vibrant talents and personalities to emerge from the show. The news of his passing is profoundly sad.

I found out early this morning that tWitch had committed suicide and it hit me really hard and I haven't been able to shake it all day. As a life-long fan of So You Think You Can Dance, I've been a tWitch fan for a long time. He was a beacon of joy and positivity both as a contestant, all-star dancer, and judge. He was one of my most favourite dancers ever. And the storybook romance of him and Allison Holker (probably my fave dancer in all of SYTYCD) meeting on the show, getting married and having three kids was just beautiful and awesome. It's honestly incomprehensible to me. I just can't shake how this turn of events doesn't align with anything I understood about tWitch at all, and really underscores how mental health issues are sadly universal and nobody is immune. I'm just so profoundly sad. And I can't stop thinking about Allison and how she now has to continue on with her three kids without her partner, and how I just don't know how people manage to do that. One of the things I love about Allison as a dancer is how powerfully she emotes in her performances. Her dancing is profoundly deep and emotionally powerful. I desperately hope she's able to find some peace thru dance—the thing that brought her and tWitch together in the first place. This one is gonna stay with me for a long while. Today's girlcrushart guardian is Allison Holker.

Stephen, I remember when I first got to dance with you.  I got on the show and you were the All-Star, my mentor! It was an overwhelming whirlwind of a process but you were grounding, compassionate and generous. With your energy and words you literally walked me through our first performance and it was during that whole experience I got to know how big your heart was, and is. In those rehearsals and that process we connected instantly talked about life, relationships, dance dreams, our big life dreams, how we would always try to use our artistic platform (whatever it ended up being) to have a voice, to empower, and that was the season you started your epic love story with Allison.  I remember Allison mentioning in an interview years later, part of the reason she had fallen in love with you was because of how you were with us, the contestants, how you treated those around you, a true testament to your generosity, character and incredible spirit. It’s been an honor to have witnessed you fulfill so many of your dreams.
This is hard because as evidenced by the messages of love all around the world, you influenced anyone who was blessed with your presence offstage and on. Throughout the years even when our paths crossed dance jobs, Sytycd reunions, teaching on dance convention, random times passing in airports while traveling for work on the weekends, and later getting to interview you for Dance Plug you were always warm, genuine, inspirational, we would catch up like no time had passed, we were always laughing, you were an example to me of humility and kindness even after all of your deserved success. You always made others feel like they were the only one in the room when you spoke to them. You gave so much. My heart hurts trying to understand the heaviness and struggle you have been carrying.  I’m sorry you were feeling so much pain, I wish you could have known that we all would have helped you hold it for a minute.
I will forever carry your joy, contagious light and 100-watt smile in my heart. Rest, peace and love dear friend.  You live forever in the light you shared with the world, the dance community, and the love you gave to those who love you.  We will miss you immensely.  @allisonholker sending you Wesley, Maddox and Zaia and your families love, peace, strength, and comfort. There is a stigma of what and who someone with depression may look or sound like. Having suicidal thoughts and honoring mental health is not weakness. Everyone is working through something, don’t just be nice - be kind, it truly is ok to not be ok, we are all human.  If you’re struggling, you’re not alone, you can get help, text or call 988.

There is no amount of thinking, or searching, of posting, or reaching out to people, there is no amount of anything that can make up for the fact that all I want to do is talk to you about yesterday. You are so proud. I am so proud. I feel honored that you have spent so much time helping me lately. And I know now it’s time to really help myself. Dancing made me realize the parts of my body that really haven’t gotten my attention in so long .. everything was in my muscle memory & of course it was physically exhausting but I was so mentally stimulated that it didn’t matter.
My mind was in my body & in the room … I saw MYSELF in the mirror. I had this story in my head that I was so out of shape & SO anxious, that I would get in there & burn myself out within the first half hour. When the hour slot we had scheduled was up, I was wishing we had more time. I remember that feeling now, I understand what got you out of bed every day. I felt it yesterday. I am just so surprised that I really allowed myself to believe that story, a figment of my imagination, essentially a lie, instead of facing it & seeing if it was true. I might have found peace if I had faced my fear of going to class at millennium. I might have been able to make a friend, or find an instructor who might’ve been able to influence me to take my life in a completely different direction.
I believed the story, the one that said “you are not good enough of a dancer to be in class at that studio. The professional girls I danced with growing up, the ones who danced in Old Navy & Verizon commercials, the ones who guest starred for an entire season of your favorite show, the ones who made it to Vegas on SYTYCD & the one who WON: that’s where they take class.…. the ones put the MF WORK IN … How dare you walk into that room unprepared to be there.” What I was really telling myself is “you’re not good enough, you’re not worthy, they are better than you, you are weak & you don’t deserve to be there”.
Britni, I wish I could have had the strength to tell you how much I was hurting & how I was actually coping with it. I knew you’d tell me to knock that shit off, and if I didn’t: you would’ve come out here & fucking made me. I didn’t go see you in Vegas because (from what I can actually recall, from the painful alcohol induced memory of that trip, that I tried so hard to block out for a while) I was in a alcohol & Adderall downslide. I didn’t have enough Adderall to make the drive, be in Vegas, & make the drive home. I was too hungover the morning I told you I couldn’t make it happen … I was living alcohol sick when I wasn’t drunk … but I blamed it on wanting to spend time with Arman or being exhausted or PROBABLY WORKING FOR TONY … trauma trauma trauma I just kept BRINGING ON MYSLEF. If I had told you EVERYTHING, or if I had come to see you in person when you were 5 hrs away, or if I had just allowed myself to accept that you loved me even tho I couldn’t love myself then… maybe everything would have been different.
I can’t live in that place anymore Britni. I have to let it go now. I know it “felt good” to keep torturing myself over these things for all of this time … it felt like I deserved to be punished for making the wrong choices when I knew what the right ones were, but chose the one that felt good or was the easy way out.
I have put all of this work in, if you were to be able to give me advice right now, it would be something along the lines of “you are doing all of the right things, keep trusting your gut & being honest with yourself & your support system. All you have to do, is put one foot in front of the other & do the things that bring you joy & peace”
So I am going to take it. I’m still going to cry a lot, I’m still going to scroll thru old photos a bunch, watch videos of you, look at our old messages, post a bunch, but I’m going to be uplifting & positive & OWN MY SPACE today. I’m gunna live today. For today. I’m gunna live for you today too. #AllForBritni

'Ellen' DJ Stephen 'tWitch' Boss Dead at 40 by Suicide
Tumblr media
Stephen "tWitch" Boss, the famed DJ on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show, is dead … and TMZ has learned it appears to be a suicide. Law enforcement sources tell us Stephen's wife Allison Holker ran into an LAPD station Tuesday, and she was frantic because she said Stephen had left home without his car -- something that was not like him at all. We're told, a short time later -- around 11:15 AM -- paramedics got a call for a medical emergency at an L.A. hotel … and they found Stephen there, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Holker tells TMZ, "Stephen lit up every room he stepped into. He valued family, friends and community above all else and leading with love and light was everything to him." She continues, "He was the backbone of our family, the best husband and father, and an inspiration to his fans. To say he left a legacy would be an understatement, and his positive impact will continue to be felt. I am certain there won’t be a day that goes by that we won’t honor his memory." https://youtu.be/GTJ_GRPGPwI Concluding, "Stephen, we love you, we miss you, and I will always save the last dance for you." Stephen started DJing on Ellen's show in 2014, and was with her until the show ended in May 2022. He had become an executive producer on the show in 2020. The last time our photogs got him out around L.A. was back in September, and he talked to us about life after 'Ellen' … sounding pretty happy to have more time with his family. Stephen hosted several reality shows … most notably, he and Allison hosted "Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings" together on Disney+.

The couple met on the all-star season of 'SYTYCD" -- they were both competing -- and they got married in 2013. Allison and Stephen had just celebrated their 9-year anniversary this past Saturday. S15: Top 10 Guys
Cole - He’s picture perfect for this show, so I think with that strong contemporary performance, he’s a lock. I didn’t feel a real emotional connection to the routine, but it was danced beautifully and authentically, and I liked it!
Jay Jay - First of all, welcome back, Chelsie Hightower! It’s been a MINUTE. I thought Jay Jay performed the heck out of this Cha Cha. His feet were flying, his arms were strong, and he had a blast. He exudes confidence, and I can’t wait to see more from him.
Slavik - I definitely got “Why” vibes from this routine, but really, it’s almost impossible to look any good next to Allison. She’s too good. I felt the chemistry between them, and I thought he danced it well, but I’m not sure he’s quite ready yet.
Justin - Love me some comfort, always. She’s another one. I thought the routine seemed really short compared to the others, and I didn’t feel like he ever got the real feel of the routine. I actually agreed with Mary that he needs to work on the acting part a bit.
Peyton - Peyton definitely has the look and feel for the show, but there was just something off about the performance to me. You could almost feel how hard he was trying, as if he was dancing to not get kicked off rather than to dance into the Top 20. Glad the judges felt the same way, and I’m not crazy.
Kyle - I adore Kyle. He was 100% committed to that performance, and even when there were minor slip ups, he remained in the moment and there for Frody. He is basically the whole jist of the show - an untrained (and by that I mean not formally trained in expensive classes his whole life) artist who will benefit the most from each week of learning. I want to see him in the live shows for sure.
Evan - I know I’m historically biased towards tappers, but I was super impressed by Evan. He held his own with Allison - those turns at the end! I also feel like he committed emotionally, and it was truly captivating. GREAT choreo from Brian too.
Dustin - I adore Dustin too! His smile lights up a room, and even in a non smiley routine, I feel like other facets of personality came out. I didn’t love the music , but the routine itself was good and Dustin danced it well. He held his own with a very good dancer in Jamie, and it seems like he had a great Academy week. I’m 100% down to watch him on the live shows.
Allen - I feel like Allen is Kiki 2.0, and even though I ended up liking Kiki, I don’t really feel the need for that journey again on this show. It’s become such a trope and I don’t like it. There was nothing really special about his jazz performance with Frody, except for Frody of course. He was fine, but I don’t need him in the Top 10. Which probably means he’ll be there. :|
Darius - They daed the best for last, because that was great. He was completely on Comfort’s level, and they were so cute together. He sat really well in the choreography, and you could tell he was actually having fun. If the judges can tell him “no more sad routines”, can they also tell the contemporary girls “no more angsty solos” please? Because if THAT comes out of it, we’ll have a lot better of a competition.
My gut feeling about the Top 5 - Cole, Jay Jay, Evan, Kyle, and Darius. (I promise, I guessed these before I watched)
Actual Top 5 - Evan, Jay Jay, Cole, Darius, Slavik
I’m so sad about Darius, but if Season 16 happens, I’d say he’s a lock. And I’m crushed about Kyle. UGH. HE WORKED SO HARD. Slavik was good, but stillll.
This is a beastly Top 10, and I’m pretty excited to see the live shows next week.

AND NO ONE WAS SURPRISED
New details are emerging about Matthew Morrison's sudden departure from his judging gig on So You Think You Can Dance.
A source close to the Fox reality show tells PEOPLE that Morrison, 43, was fired from the series "after he had an inappropriate relationship with a female contestant."
"They didn't have sex, but he reached out to her through flirty direct messages on social media," the source says. "She felt uncomfortable with his line of comments and went to producers, who then got Fox involved. He was fired after they did their own investigation."
The source adds that Morrison and the unidentified female contestant "never met up off-set."
"It was just messages that crossed the line," the source notes.
Reps for Morrison and Fox did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
News that the Tony Award-nominated Broadway star had exited SYTYCD broke on Friday, a little more than a week after the dance competition series aired its season 17 premiere on May 18.
At the time, Morrison said in a statement to PEOPLE that he was leaving the show after failing to follow "competition production protocols."
"Having the opportunity to be a judge on So You Think You Can Dance was an incredible honor for me. Therefore, it is my deepest regret to inform you that I will be leaving the show," Morrison said in the statement.
"After filming the audition rounds for the show and completing the selection of the 12 finalists, I did not follow competition production protocols, preventing me from being able to judge the competition fairly," he continued. "I cannot apologize enough to all involved and I will be watching alongside you all on what I know will be one of the best seasons yet."
Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
As most of this season's episodes were already pre-taped, Morrison will likely appear in episodes through mid-June, according to Entertainment Weekly, adding that his replacement is expected to be brought in for the second part of the competition's filming.
Morrison was part of a new panel of judges for season 17 that replaced Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy with JoJo Siwa and Stephen "tWitch" Boss. Cat Deeley returns as host this season.
