top watches for september
from this month:
will ospreay vs naomichi marufuji, noah naomichi marufuji debut 25th anniversary show 09/17 — not only my favorite match of the month but my most anticipated one as well! i think it's always interesting to see ospreay be taken out of his usual pace and perform with more breathing room between spots (even if his snappier sequences are what drew me in initially). there are a lot of quiet moments in this match, mixed with that devoted eagerness that ospreay had while he was a junior. it's also a match that is able to tap into something very special thanks to the emotional padding behind it that i think ospreay's other big match from this month (vs yota tsuji) is unable to match
syuri vs mayu iwatani, stardom 5star grand prix day 14 09/03 — syuri is my favorite joshi to watch currently! she wrestles such a loud, hard-hitting style that still feels fresh in the technical scene and she has great in-ring chemistry with mayu here. mayu's reversal of the syu-sekai though... gah! a relatively short match and one of my favorites from the entire gp
bryan danielson vs ricky starks, no disqualification strap match, aew all out 09/03 — the singular non-puro match on this list, which should already give you an idea of how truly great it is. ricky has been a highlight on collision pretty much since it began airing, and the natural charisma that shined through there is ever-present in his recent matches. bloody, brutal, and better than the follow-up texas death rematch in terms of cohesion
zack sabre jr. vs ryohei oiwa, njpw road to destruction 09/08 — i was ecstatic to have boltin oleg in a high-profile match! ...and then it didn't happen. but worry not! oiwa stole the show. it definitely didn't feel as one-sided as it would've if it was oiwa pre-excursion pitted against zack. excited to see more from him
takayuki ueki vs baliyan akki, baka gaijin + friends vol. 8 09/20 — the mad doctor takes on akki, returning superstar of the show, after mecha mummy fails to drill a hole through harashima and is subsequently defeated. it's as silly as it sounds
back catalogue:
shinsuke nakamura vs the great muta, noah the new year 2023 — positively overwhelming presentation in terms of the entrances. misting as a metaphor for relatedness rather than corruption. unstoppable force meets immovable object, up until the object embraces the force. a sentimental finish that stuck with me
katsuyori shibata vs kazuchika okada, njpw sakura genesis 2017 — a holistically tactile bout full of sweaty contact and undying resolve. okada finds himself in the rare predicament of not being the fan favorite! practically impossible to look away during this one
pheromones (danshoku dieno & yuki iino) & shunma katsumata vs akito, kazuki hirata & yuya koroku, ddt sweet dreams! 2023 tour in shinjuku ~ fire! ~ — a typical pheromones match in that it contains loads of their trademark spots (synchronized striptease routines, dramatic jockstrap reveals, "accidental" ass to mouth action) however! this time shunma is there to act as their pup (which he is very much into). a must-watch for fans of public kink in wrestling
atsushi onita vs hayabusa, no ropes barbed wire current mine explosion time bomb deathmatch, fmw 6th anniversary show 1995 — hayabusa comes off as a trapped animal within onita’s environment, only delaying the inevitable with each move. feels and looks like a horror movie, with the counter droning on in the first half and the smoke wafting through the cage of barbed wire in the second. explosions galore!
shotaro ashino vs koji doi, wrestle-1 grand prix 2018 finals — this was my first exposure to ashino and let me tell you... he's so good. his entrance is fuel by metallica, he's cocky, he goes hard in the ring. i'm genuinely shocked he's not a bigger name internationally. nothing too extravagant aside from a few high-impact spots but worth a watch

It's a Manga New Year... So Far
12 books into the new year and they are all manga so far.
First were the current 7 volumes of The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent by Yuka Tachibana. I love that the FMC is older. Of course, I love isekai anyway and stories where "real life" has game menus. Not necessarily dungeon manga/manwha but with the menus. (Does this genre have a name?) Side note: that I do love dungeon genre as well.
Next were the 4 volumes of Fiancee of the Wizard by Syuri Nakamura & Keiko Sakano. Another isekai but this one hits differently. The FMC isn't in this world to be a great heroine and she isn't brash and the be all, end all beauty. She is a lovely, gentle character who is sweet and understanding. The MMC is a completely gorgeous tsundere who is completely obsessed with the FMC.
My most recent was the only volume of The Princess Everyone Hates is the Beast King's Favorite. I am on pins and needles waiting for the next volume of this series. It's making promises that I am eager to know if it can keep. It is a minor time loop reset story with a displaced princess... but she is poisonous! And she isn't trying to reclaim the kingdom, isn't enemies with her family. The plot is so refreshing in so many ways! And it has kemonomimi as a separate race!
So 12 volumes into the new year and all manga.

Bookshelf Briefs 3/31/21
Black Clover, Vol. 24 | By Yuki Tabata | Viz Media – New arc, new villains, new desperate fighting, new nameless characters being killed to give our named leads resolve and fury, and the same old fighting. I’ve said before that, in ripping off every shonen series around it, Black Clover is not really doing a bad job. That said, it’s also not standing out—by definition, this is gonna be pretty generic. Asta shouts and beats up bad guys, Noelle snarks at him, Charmy is back to being superdeformed and eating far too much, etc. You can easily see why this is now the third-longest-running series in Shonen Jump. But you can also see why it’s roundly mocked, and is never going to be at a point where it amazes the readers with its clever surprises. – Sean Gaffney
Delicious in Dungeon, Vol. 9 | By Ryoko Kui| Yen Press – I forgot to brief the last volume of this, which means it’s been almost a year and a half. This “caught up with Japan” series, however, is always worth a deep read, and this time around, after some amusing but goofy stuff involving succubuses, we get to the core of the volume, which is Laios and Kabru’s contrasting viewpoints. Laios’ desire to have a community in the dungeon where everyone can live in peace and harmony… and also eat animals, which theoretically would be happier dying like this than with their current circumstance, contrasts with Kabru still seeing Laios as a dangerously unhinged madman who won’t stop going on about eating the things that kill everyone in the dungeon. Must read, still. – Sean Gaffney
Fiancee of the Wizard, Vol. 2 | By Syuri Nakamura and Masaki Kazuka | Yen Press -This volume moved a lot faster than I was expecting. It also leaves the titular fiancee on the sidelines for most of the book—there’s a battle to defeat the demon lord, but given she doesn’t have much magic or fighting skill, she’s not involved. The wizard IS involved, and we get quite a few scenes from the POV of his party, featuring a hero who I will politely call “naive” and two more savvy characters, including a princess who Filimena assumes is exactly the sort of person he will immediately fall for. She’s wrong, and as always Edy’s inability to not be an awkward jerk masks his true feelings. This ends with a wedding, but there are apparently more volumes. – Sean Gaffney
An Incurable Case of Love, Vol. 5 | By Maki Enjoji | Viz Media – The series ends with the 7th volume, which is good, because this is the one where I started to get a bit annoyed with the characters—Dr. Tendo is usually very good at understanding Nanase, but he’s very bad at communicating his own wants, needs, and desires. The sister of the woman he was unable to save is now in the hospital, reminding him that he really does want to do this research—but he also loves Nanase, and does not want to be separated from her. If he managed to communicate this properly to Nanase… well, OK, the series would likely then be six volumes instead of seven. Miscommunication is the lifeblood of most shoujo and josei romance titles, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating. – Sean Gaffney
Magus of the Library, Vol. 4 | By Mitsu Izumi | Kodansha Comics – Word of warning for this volume: you will meet about 25 new cast members, complete with character bios. Fortunately, I don’t think we will have to remember them all at once. In any case, most of this volume is a standard “first days at school” sort of story, complete with the stern teacher, our hero stressing out about which path he will be taking, and a reunion with the person who was the biggest influence on his life. Now comes the question of where the story will be going as there’s a bit of an implication that the mentor is going to be kicking down a few pillars of society. Oh yes, and there is also the gorgeous art, which is still probably the main reason to read this series. – Sean Gaffney
Our Teachers Are Dating!, Vol. 2 | By Pikachi Ohi | Seven Seas – We continue to read the Pixie Stix of yuri manga, and it certainly delivers, being so sweet you may want to read Inio Asano afterwards for balance. There are a few “new couple” problems here, mostly as they haven’t really opened up to each other yet because they’re still in the first bloom of love. Most of this volume revolves around the school festival, so we get to see them compete in a three-legged race, walk around buying things from their students, dress in each other’s work outfits (and, later in an omake, in each other’s old high school uniforms). They are also still very physically attracted to each other—sex is plentiful here. Still a must-read for those who like sweet yuri manga but without the high schoolers. – Sean Gaffney
Penguin Gentlemen | By Kishi Ueno | Yen Press – Sometimes something magical can happen when a manga creator throws seemingly random and disparate interests together in a work. In the case of Penguin Gentleman, that oddly compelling combination consists of good-looking clothes, good-looking men, and good-looking… penguins?? At its heart, Penguin Gentleman is an informational and educational manga about these aquatic, flightless birds. Ueno’s enthusiasm for them is catching; I felt like I had to share all of the interesting things I was learning with others. However, it’s the manga’s ridiculous conceit that makes it so entertaining. For whatever reason (a reason actually is given, but it’s not at all important), the main characters of Penguin Gentleman are penguins who have taken on human form. And dress in tuxedos, of course. And work together at a bar, because why not? There’s not really much of a story, just the humor resulting from translating penguin behaviour into a human setting. – Ash Brown
Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts, Vol. 12 | By Yu Tomofuji | Yen Press – There’s a celebratory parade at the start of this volume… one which Sariphi is not participating in, despite the feelings of the king. Now, to be fair, this allows her to have an adorable adventure with a platypus who is trying to grow stronger (and also see the King), but it does not change the central problem, which is that even though Sariphi has managed to win over most of the court by now, the relationship between beastmen and humans is still fractured almost beyond repair. So she decides to act as an envoy to bring a peace offering… with results that are amusing but also a little alarming. We’re clearly coming close to the endgame here, and I like that this volume has Sariphi taking control. – Sean Gaffney
Snow White with the Red Hair, Vol. 11 | By Sorata Akiduki | Viz Media – At long last, Zen and Shiroyuki are taking that important step—they’re moving in together… well, OK, not quite. Zen is having Shiroyuki moved into his section of the palace, with the rest of his aides such as Mitsuhide and Kiki, who are still… kind of teased? You get the sense the author knows folks really want them to be a couple, but also doesn’t really want to go there given their regular interaction is so much fun. Speaking of Kiki, she also gets to pose as Zen’s supposed bridal candidate, mostly to get the rumors off his back, because he is NOT ready to go full public with his herbalist just yet. That said, the cliffhanger promises a sea change in this story. Still must-read shoujo manga. – Sean Gaffney
We’re New at This, Vol. 4 | By Ren Kawahara | Kodansha Comics – Thank goodness the author realizes that they could not have a young, horny married couple who are constantly turned on by each other be virgins for TOO long. Yes, at last, our leads have consummated, oddly as a result of the normally steady Sumika forgetting tickets to a concert they were going to. This is framed with a flashback showing her stern, unforgiving father yelling at her, and contrasting this with the far more easygoing Ikuma forgiving her. This is really good, as it gives good character background, explaining a lot of why Sumika is the way she is, and also allows for a good reason that they finally can move past embarrassment or overexcitement and show how much they love each other. Oh yes, and still funny. – Sean Gaffney

“Well Japan, we uh, got some fights?” UFC heads back to Japan
Joey
September 17th, 2017
So the UFC marches along and that's absolutely great and all except for Japan. Japan's getting a very Japanese show; some compelling fights, some names getting fights, a freakshow or two and...well...I mean that's about it. It'll get better in October guys, I promise y'all.
Fights: 11
Debuts:  4 (Daiche Abe, Gokhan Saki, Yushin Okami and Syuri Kondo)
Fight Changes/Injury Cancellations: 2 (Mauricio "Shogun" Rua OUT, Yushin Okami IN vs Ovince St Preux/Jenel Lausa vs Naoki Inoue  cancelled due to injuries)
Headliners (fighters who have either main evented or co-main evented shows in the UFC): 7 (Yushin Okami, Ovince St. Preux, Takanori Gomi, Claudia Gadelha, Jessica Andrade, Jussier Formiga, Hyun Gyu Lim)
Fighters On Losing Streaks in the UFC:  4 (Luis Henrique, Takanori Gomi, Teruto Ishihara, Keita Nakamura)
Fighters On Winning Streaks in the UFC:  1 (Claudia Gadelha)
Stat Monitor for 2017:
Debuting Fighters (Current number: 25-25)- Syuri Kondo, Daichi Abe, Yushin Okami, Gokhan Saki
Short Notice Fighters (Current number: 17-27)- Yushin Okami
Second Fight (Current number: 23-27)-  Luke Jumeau, Chan Mi-Jeon, Rolando Dy
Cage Corrosion (15-7)- Hyun Gyu Lim, Shinsho Anzai
Twelve Precarious Ponderings:
1- Is this the worst most intriguing wacky UFC card ever? Let's run down the main card real quick, k? Yushin Okami vs OSP is a 170 lber vs a guy big enough to fight at HW at 205 lbs but the welterweight has a genuine shot to make this interesting assuming he doesn't get plopped, dropped and finished early. The co-main event is a genuinely "big" fight as Jessica Andrade takes on Claudia Gadelha in a very intriguing fight of great importance. Takanori Gomi vs Dong Hyun Kim is the sort of fight where Gomi should absoluely win but The Maestro is the sort of dude who if Gomi is 100% completely done forever fight n o more he's going to lose to. Above all, watching faded Gomi try to look competent these days is fun among itself. Luiz Henrique vs Gokhan Saki is a total Japanese freakshow fight as the kickboxer takes on a dude who seems to get hurt consistently in every fight he's had and is on a three fight losing streak. Charles Rosa vs Mizuto Hirota is a damn good fight since it pits an ultra durable Japanese veteran against a dude who seems to give elites trouble but can't beat them. Teruto Ishihara vs Rolando Dy is a total attempt to reset  Ishihara's hype train, pitting him against an unheralded striker who struggled with long limbed brawlers in the past.
2- So...what's OSP getting out of this?
3- Potential theory; the winner of this fight will face off with Thug Rose at the start-middle of 2018 for the 115 lb title. I bet Joanna vacates to move up IF she beats Rose.
4- Is Gomi the biggest star remaining on this card?
5- Gokhan Saki is a pretty fun  idea on paper but I do wonder what the upside is. 205 lbs is in this weird space where 125 lbs used to be; a division with a bunch of guys nobody cares about and some unknown studs trying to develop at an accelerated pace. Is Saki going to just be used as a fun mid level act or do they have a long term plan for him at light heavyweight assuming he wins?
6- I mention this all the time but the guys who beat Jussier Formiga move on to fight for the title; Dodson, Benavidez, Cejudo and Borg. He is, in many ways, the measuring stick guy for title contention and Ulka Sasaki has the guy in Japan. Expect some crazy scrambles early on.
7- The UFC rightfully thought it might've stumbled onto something with Teruto Ishihara, the wacky striking savvy fighter out of Japan who was finishing dudes off of Road to UFC Japan. He's a fun fighter for sure but they matched him up with Artem Lobov whose entire career/life is based around beating up limited prospects. Lobov exposed some holes in Ishihara's game but against Gray Maynard, the UFC gave Ishihara a match up that in theory should've benefitted him. Ishihara's wrestling wasn't up to par and he wasn't able to crack the dented chin of The Bully. Now he gets Rolando Dy who didn't show a ton vs Alex Caceres, granted in a short notice fight.
8- Does the UFC have a preference in who wins between Jessica Andrade and Claudia Gadelha?
9- Shinsho Anzai vs Luke Jumeau has POTNB written all over it.
10- Is Mizuto Hirota the 145 lb version of Keita Nakamura or is Keita Nakamura the 170 lb version of Mizuto Hirota?
11- Is the Hyun Gyu Lim buzz done?
12- I've been quite a fan of Syuri's joshi work but I've heard her upside as a fighter is relatively limited. Having said that, Chan Mi Joen wasn't exactly a ball of fire and activity the last time we saw her so who knows.
Must Wins
1- Ovince St Preux
Look dudes, OSP cannot lose this fight. 205 lber fighting a 170 lb guy? Okami likely has two rounds in him. Can't lose here.
2- Ulka Sasaki
Anybody who beats Jussier Formiga goes on to fight for the UFC flyweight title. Even though Ulka hasn't been the most impressive flyweight at times and  is far from unbeatable, he's a new face who has the ability to go on a bit of a run. I'm not thrilled with him trying to make this weight cut again but if he's going to cut to 125 lbs then he's going to be "in the mix" until otherwise noted.
3- Teruto Ishihara
On one hand, the decision to roll Ishihara out there vs a guy coming off a loss in his second fight is very much a fine decision to re-develop some buzz on a prospect. The problem is that IF a loss happens then there's truly no way to scratch the bottom of the barrel any lower.
Five Fights Not To Miss
1- Gokhan Saki vs Luis Henrique
2- Jessica Andrade vs Claudia Gadelha
3- Teruto Ishihara vs Rolando Dy
4- Jussier Formiga vs Ulka Sasaki
5- Daichi Abe vs Hyun Gyu Lim

Fight Night Japan Fantasy Rewind | UFC &reg
Ovince Saint Preux didn’t blink at the change of opponent he faced on just over a week’s notice, and it showed with his performance against Yushin Okami in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Japan on Friday.
It was quite the finish from Saint Preux, who out grappled a noted wrestler in Okami after the fight hit the mat in the early part of the opening round. Once Okami made an ill-advised attempt to go for a guillotine choke on the ground, Saint Preux saw the opening for his favorite submission.
RELATED: Watch highlights of Gokhan Saki debut
OSP latched on to Okami’s arm and pressed his shoulder down into the neck, setting up the rarely seen Von Flue choke before putting away the former middleweight title challenger in the opening round. Incredibly, for as rare as the Von Flue choke is inside the Octagon, that was the third time Saint Preux has earned a win with that particular submission.
Of course, because Saint Preux was facing a late replacement, it’s no wonder he was a huge favorite going into the card according to fantasy players, with an overwhelming 87 percent picking him to win over Okami, although 80 percent did predict a finish by knockout, so the submission was still a bit of a surprise.
In the co-main event, Jessica Andrade put on the best performance of her UFC career as she punished former title contender Claudia Gadelha over three rounds to earn a unanimous decision win. Andrade was one fight removed from facing strawweight queen Joanna Jedrzejczyk, but she looked better than ever as she dismantled Gadelha on the ground to get the win.
Despite her credentials going into the fight, Andrade was a massive underdog with only 15 percent of fantasy players picking her to beat Gadelha on Friday night. It was quite the showing for Andrade, who sent a strong statement to the rest of the division with her victory.
Dong Hyun Kim needed less than a round to put away former PRIDE champion Takanori Gomi in a lightweight matchup where 68 percent of fantasy players predicted his win on the card.
Meanwhile, former kickboxing superstar Gokhan Saki earned a Performance of the Night bonus for his jaw-dropping one-punch knockout over Henrique da Silva in a light heavyweight matchup on the main card. While his kickboxing credentials were well known, Saki was only selected by 38 percent of fantasy players, but his win also earned an extra 40 points because it was his UFC debut.
Teruto Ishihara survived a back and forth battle with Rolando Dy to earn a win in his fight after 86 percent of fantasy players picked him going into the card. Top 10-ranked flyweight Jussier Formiga also made short work of Ulka Sasaki with a first-round rear naked choke finish with 74 percent of fantasy players selecting him in the opening bout of the main card.
On the prelims, Keita Nakamura pulled off the upset with his split decision win over Alex Morono after just 36 percent of fantasy players selected him on the card. The same could be said for Syuri Kondo, who got a split decision victory over Chanmi Jeon in a women’s strawweight fight with just 40 percent of fantasy players picking her. Kondo also earned a whopping 160 point bonus for those players picking her because it was such a tight matchup and also because it was her UFC debut.
Shinsho Anzai was also another impressive bonus fighter on Friday night as he pulled off a victory over Luke Jumeau by decision with 51 percent of fantasy players picking him but also delivering an extra 175 points because he was an underdog according to the odds makers going into the card.
Daichi Abe closed out the card with yet another upset as he earned a decision win over Hyun Gyu Lim with just 24 percent of fantasy players picking him.
At the end of the night, the card was split, with five favorites getting wins and five underdogs pulling off the upsets according to the fight selections made by fantasy players for UFC Fight Night: Saint Preux vs. Okami.

OSP, Andrade, and Saki rise at UFC Japan
By Edward Carbajal
Follow @Carbazel
9/23/2017
The Saitama Super Arena in Japan has a history of some of mixed martial arts’ best fights and UFC Japan continued the trend. While Ovince Saint Preux added another finish to last minute opponent Yushin Okami, other fighters turned the tables on their opponent’s for highlight worthy finishes.
Jessica Andrade had a rough first round against Claudia Gadelha with Gadhela landing a lot of hard shots in high volume in the first round. However, all it seemed to do was add fuel to Andrade’s competitive fire as towards the end of that round, the following rounds would have her outworking the top ranked Strawweight for the win.
In only his second professional MMA fight, Gokhan Saki showed he could adjust his kickboxing to suit him well against Henrique Da Silva. Early and often Saki landed hard, heavy shots against Da Silva who absorbed the punishment to trade the Dutch striker. If Da Silva wanted to test himself, he now knows the result as a near finish with an elbow would backfire as Saki was able to dig deep and fire off combos even when he was in trouble.
 Complete Results:
Ovince Saint Preux def. Yushin Okami via submission (Von Flue choke) at 1:50 of Round 1
Jessica Andrade def. Claudia Gadelha via unanimous decision
Dong Hyun Kim def. Takanori Gomi via TKO (punches) at 1:30 of Round 1
Gokhan Saki def. Henrique da Silva via KO (punch) at 4:45 of Round 1
Teruto Ishihara def. Rolando Dy via unanimous decision
Keita Nakamura def. Alex Morono via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Jussier Formiga def. Ulka Sasaki via submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:30 of Round 1
Syuri Kondo def. Chanmi Jeon via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 30-27)
Shinsho Anzai def. Luke Jumeau via unanimous decision
Daichi Abe def. Hyun Gyu Lim via unanimous decision

UFC Japan 2017 results: Ovince Saint Preux submits Yushin Okami in 1st round
Ovince Saint Preux has his third Von Flue choke finish in the UFC, beating Yushin Okami on Friday.
Ovince Saint Preux was victorious in the main event of UFC Japan from the Saitama Super Arena on Friday, securing a Von Flue choke on Yushin Okami in the first round of their bout. It’s Saint Preux’s third Von Flue choke finish in the promotion, a pretty remarkable showing.
He was originally scheduled to face Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the main event, but that fight was scrapped due to an injury. Instead he faced Okami, who is making his second stint in the UFC since his last bout with the promotion in 2013. Okami was the heavy underdog and that showed on Friday, as Saint Preux cruised to a victory.
In the co-feature, Jéssica Andrade put together a dominant performance against Cláudia Gadelha in a women’s strawweight bout. The first round was close, but Andrade took over in the second and arguably secured a 10-8 round in the third. She won by unanimous decision, 30-25, 30-26, 30-27.
Andrade’s last fight was for the UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship against Joanna Jędrzejczyk. She struggled in that bout, but is now back in the win column as she makes a bid back into the title picture. Jędrzejczyk is 14-0 and one of the most dominant champions in the promotion.
Earlier on the main card, legendary Japanese fighter Takanori Gomi was unable to get back in the win column against Dong Hyun Kim. Gomi lost the lightweight bout by first-round TKO. Prior to that, Tokhan Saki bested Henrique da Silva with a first-round knockout punch that came with just 15 seconds to go in the round.
A main card bout between Charles Rosa and Mizuto Hirota was cancelled following weight cutting complications with Hirota, bumping the flyweight bout between Jussier Formiga and Ulka Sasaki onto the main card. Formiga finished Sasaki with a rear-naked choke in the opening round.
Below you can find full results for Friday’s action.

Bookshelf Briefs 10/22/20
Arifureta: I Heart Isekai, Vol. 3 | By Misaki Mori, based on the novel by Ryo Shirakome | Seven Seas – This is keeping up a fast pace, not lingering too long on any one part of the novels that it’s making fun of. Everyone manages to be that much more over-the-top than they are in the source—though admittedly Kaori goes above and beyond in this regard—and the art also has little cute “we are angry” faces for everyone that look cute and scary at the same time. More to the point, despite all the gags, the I Heart Isekai series actually manages to keep the found-family bits that are also the best reason to read the main series, and its character attacks never feel malicious (again, Kaori comes close, but then she does in the main series as well.) A lot of fun. – Sean Gaffney
Dr. STONE, Vol. 13 | By Riichiro Inagaki and Boichi | Viz Media – A lot of Dr. Stone is taking inventions that you would expect could not remotely be done in a pre-industrial age and doing them anyway due to Senku’s knowledge… though he’s helped along greatly by his dad, who we see passing away long in the past in a flashback here but who also manages to get Senku some gold and platinum to work with. They are also helped out by Kohaku’s awesome strength and agility, though I will admit I could have done without the “does not know how to be feminine” stuff. That said, it’s hard to top the absolute highlight of the book, which is Suika driving what is essentially a tank, BLIND, off a ship and into Senku’s hands. She’s still the best thing in this. – Sean Gaffney
Hatsu*Haru, Vol. 12 | By Shizuki Fujisawa | Yen Press – The damp squib that is Tarou and Kagura wraps up fast here, which is good, because the rest of the book is all over Misaki and Ayumi. Her parents have discovered their relationship, and since Misaki is a very serious boy, he decides to stop seeing her till he can get her dad’s approval, because of course he is one of THOSE dads. As for Ayumi, she still has trouble with the normal emotions of love that come naturally to the rest of the cast. The result is, as it has been since it became, several volumes back, the best relationship in the series. Which is good, as the series ends next time, and we will no doubt be moving back to Kai and Riko—I smell a sudden transfer to another part of the country coming. – Sean Gaffney
The Ideal Sponger Life, Vol. 6 | By Tsunehiko Watanabe and Neko Hinotsuki | Seven Seas – We are starting to see Zenjiro beginning to act on his own a bit more, though he’s still got someone there next to him to do the actual work. It is hard, after all, despite many isekais to the contrary, to fully immerse yourself in a new world with all-new customs. More to the point, his child with Aura may not be unique when it comes to magical affinities. And there’s a new princess in town, from the equivalent of Scandinavia, and no one seems to know what to make of her—indeed, she makes a point to divide her role as a captain from her role as a princess. More to the point, it means we get another badass woman in this book that seems to be far more interested in its politics than in any sponging. – Sean Gaffney
Laid-Back Camp, Vol. 9 | By Afro | Yen Press – If there’s one issue I have with this series it’s the artwork, particularly the character art, as I frequently find that I have trouble telling many of the characters apart. Once I get past that, this is exactly what the previous eight volumes have been: lots of relaxed camping, great scenery, and cute girls. There’s not really any hint of yuri here, but there’s also not really any hint of boys, so Rin/Nadeshiko fans should be pleased anyway. We get the birthday party from last time, which is… not as big a secret as expected. We get capybaras! There’s hot springs, there’s sunrises, and there’s Rin going off to do her own thing half the time, like the introvert with a wanderlust that she is. Does this end when they graduate? – Sean Gaffney
Murcielago, Vol. 15 | By Yoshimurakana | Yen Press – I missed reviewing 14 somehow, and thus the end of the sewer monster story. That said, though, what with Kuroko decidedly NOT having ridiculous sex at the start of this book, I have to wonder: is Murcielago getting toned down? Certainly the violence is present and correct, though this is the start of an arc, so it’s not quite as over-the-top as before. This sees another old villain returning, but we haven’t yet met Comedy Writer in this series—they seem to get people to do silly stunts, and ‘retired’ after one stunt ends up with dead people. Kuroko is her usual goofy self here, but as I noted, she seems a bit more… placid than usual? Her detective skills are also excellent here. Still great if you don’t mind gore. – Sean Gaffney
My Dress-Up Darling, Vol. 2 | By Shinichi Fukuda| Square Enix Manga – Despite the explicit content tag (and the occasional naughty shot, like the inside front cover), this reads far more as a series for fans of nice high school romance than anything else. Gojo is pushing himself far too hard, because he’s genuinely creating something for someone else but also as he feels that after this one event he’ll lose it all forever. He’s desperately socially awkward, and it’s rather sweet that Kitagawa gets so upset she’s in tears at the thought of him driving himself this hard. The cosplay is a big success, and there’s some nice costuming tips here as well. By the end of the volume, she seems to be realizing she’s falling for him… so it is, of course, the perfect time to introduce another rival. Cliffhanger! – Sean Gaffney
Our Teachers Are Dating!, Vol. 1 | By Pikachi Ohi | Seven Seas – If you want your yuri with a side order of adorable, this is the manga for you. One is the science teacher, the other teaches gym, and they’re both cute cute cute. To the point that there is minimal conflict—and honestly you don’t want any. The other teachers? Love the two of them together. The administration? Fine with it. The other students? They’re over the moon, of course. Most of the book is seeing two relatively shy people grow closer and closer in their dating till they’re ready to take the next step, which we see towards the end of the book. The students bribe them with pictures of the other. The closest we get to any strife is one being mistaken for a student (she’s short and cute). This was super-fluffy. – Sean Gaffney
Skip Beat!, Vol. 44 | By Yoshiki Nakamura | VIZ Media – It’s probably cheesy to say, but each new volume of Skip Beat! really is like checking in with old friends. In this case, it’s a pair of old friends who still haven’t managed to communicate their feelings to the other. This time they’re thwarted by Ren’s assumption that Kyoko has fallen back in love with Sho and by a tabloid article about Ren kissing an older actress. I truly wish each volume was about thrice as long, but alas, we don’t yet see what Ren does with the information that Kyoko is upset about the article more than his assumptions about her and Sho. I love this series and I don’t want it to end and I know that Ren and Kyoko getting together will mean that end is coming, but a little crumb of genuine progress would make me so happy. Maybe next time, which won’t be ’til March! – Michelle Smith
The Saint’s Magic Power Is Omnipotent, Vol. 1 | By Yuka Tachibana and Yasuyuki Syuri | Seven Seas – I haven’t read much in the way of light novels, but this one sounded interesting, so I gave it a go. Perhaps I should’ve started with a traditional isekai series in order to better appreciate how this one differs, as I initially found it quite slow going. Sei Takanashi, office lady, is summoned to another world as one of two potential Saints who will help quell an outbreak of monsters. After the prince chooses the younger candidate, Sei is free to pursue her interests, eventually discovering she’s very good at making potions, enchanting objects, and performing healing magic. Towards the end, with Sei reluctantly accepting that she is the Saint after all (unable to refrain from healing a seriously injured knight), the story picked up a bit, and I’m interested to see where it will go from here. A bit more action would be nice! – Michelle Smith
