August Favorites
I can tell that the summer is coming to a close because all I want to do is drink buckets of tea. I always love tea, but I slow my consumption down in the sweltering summer months. As soon as it dips below 75, however, my body decides that it is now autumn. Needless to say, I’m excited for more clement weather and my favorite holiday right around the corner. (Not that anyone is going to be…

Book Reviews
I read a autobiography today, and I liked it so much I read another!
Tumblr media
The first book was Solutions and Other Problems, by Allie Brosh. This book was really good, and I don’t know what else to say about it. Did you like Hyperbole And A Half? Did you spend years and years wishing it would come back? Were you excited when suddenly 500+ pages of it came out? You’ll like this book and you probably already knew that but if you were waiting for my opinion it’s pretty good!
If you’re not familiar with Hyperbole and a Half, it’s basically a bunch of “I did a weird thing one time” stories with a really crude but expressive art style that works well for this kind of thing.
Tumblr media
It’s just a bunch of funny stories with funny pictures, and then it just fucking blindsides you with a heart-wrenching story about depression or cancer when you least expect it. In fact, compared to Hyperbole and a Half, Solutions and Other Problems is surprisingly philosophical. This is a book with an over-arching theme that comes suspiciously close to being a moral and the nature of life. Strongly recommended to anyone who doesn’t hate Hyperbole and a half.
Tumblr media
The other book I read was an autobiographical manga called I Don’t Know How To Give Birth! which I bought partially because I don’t know either, and partially because I’ll buy any manga that’s not about goddamn high schoolers, a distressingly cheap habit.
Tumblr media
It’s an autobiographical story about how Ayami Kazama decided to have a baby basically because her husband wanted one but she grew up in an alarmingly conservative family (the idea that she didn’t know what sex was until college...) and had fertility issues. It’s a pretty cute little one-volume manga that’s not “educational” in the sense that there are textbook pages explaining things, but is mostly little vignettes of “Wow I have chest hair now I didn’t know that happened”, which is all fairly light and cartoony. Going from the art above, you’d expect chapter on the actual birth part to have tremendous facial expressions, and it does!
If “a cartoony autobio manga about pregnancy” isn’t something that interests you, this book probably won’t change your mind, but it’s a quick and sometimes funny read that I enjoyed. Moderately recommended to anyone who thinks it sounds interesting.
