Quote
It's bittersweet in that the ride is over. [Kim's Convenience is] something that is such an intrinsic part of my career and my life. It's opened up so many doors for me. I'm forever grateful and humbled... and I'm also very proud.
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, to Talia Schangler, on CBC Q.
It is very bittersweet for me to, that this lovely show ended. So much so that I haven’t been able to watch the last season yet. I keep it for a time when I will need comfort, like a treat or a warm hug; because I know it will bring me joy, like Kim’s Convenience has from the very start. And probably a few tears too, but maybe then I’ll be ready to say goodbye...

“The sacrifice you made”
Stone: "I don't think we learned a lesson at all, and that's sad to me. We could've had another type of country right now. We could've been, let's say, a more peaceful country. We could've had allies and friends throughout the world. There's no need to have enemies unless you seek them out."
Schlanger: "You know, it's funny [that] your entire demeanor just changed when you said, 'It's sad to me.' It's like the first moment that I feel you've allowed [yourself] to reflect on the personal hardship and sacrifice that you actually made by serving in a war. Just honestly, as a human being, I feel like it seems there's a pain in there for what you went through."
Stone: "For what so many people have gone through. I'm talking about civilians and soldiers, too. It was awful. It's just...there's nothing worse in the world than war. It scars society. It coarsens everybody. The mindset of war - the mindset of violence - is one of the worst things that can happen in your life."
-Talia Schlanger interviews Oliver Stone, q on CBC Radio, Aug 10 2020 [x]

Yola was on NPR's World Cafe to discuss and perform from her Dan Auerbach-produced debut album, Walk Through Fire. Its songs "ring out with the triumphant air of someone who has withstood the flames and the heat en route to achieving their dreams," says host Talia Schlanger. You can hear the conversation and performance here.

Last month, Harry Styles was on the cover of American Vogue wearing a pale blue, ruffled, floor-length Gucci gown. Styles isn't the first famous male musician to wear women's clothing in the public sphere — David Bowie, Boy George and Prince have done it too — but Styles’s outfits are a part of a new conversation around gender divisions in fashion. Historically, the fashion industry has organized itself around separate collections for men and women; you see this in clothing stores, online shops, on the runway and in magazines. Now, the fashion industry is catching up to the concept that gender exists on a spectrum. Our fashion columnist Mosha Lundström Halbert joined guest host Talia Schlanger to tell us more about genderless fashion, as well as some other fashion stories we're watching as we look ahead to 2021.

Rhiannon Giddens and Francesco Turrisi were on NPR's World Cafe to perform from the new album there is no Other and talk with host Talia Schlanger. It's "a fascinating collaboration," says Schlanger. "Both Rhiannon and Francesco are devoted students of music history whose mission is to use the past to illuminate the present and to give credit where credit’s due for the way instruments and ideas have moved over time between people. They used all that knowledge to make gorgeous music together on a new album called there is no Other." Listen again here.

Sage advice from Rosanne Cash, a very David Byrne-ian one-liner and more: These are the quotes that stuck with World Cafe host Talia Schlanger this year.

Hanging out with Tank and the Bangas at Tipitinas is the kind of scene that made me turn to music photography when I got to New Orleans 3 years ago. Here's a write up about them by Bob Boilen for WBUR news "Out of over 6,000 entries — more submissions than we've ever received — Tank And The Bangas won, unanimously, this year's Tiny Desk Contest. I fully expected their victory performance here at NPR headquarters in D.C. to be celebratory. I didn't know we'd all end up in tears. This band combines R&B with hip-hop's poetry and rollercoaster storytelling, with a flair and alchemy that could only come from New Orleans. Their winning song, "Quick," mixes liquor and revenge — a sort of modern day take on a great folk tale, but peppered with their own idiosyncratic flair and humor. What I couldn't see, until they took over my desk, was the depth of their lyricism and the versatility of their players. At one moment fun-filled funk, the next laid-back jazz, rhythm-driven blues — and it all flows seamlessly. And it's fun to watch: There's a magic kinship between Tarriona "Tank" Ball and Anjelika "Jelly" Joseph as they share singing roles, like two best friends finishing one another's sentences. This is the third year that NPR Music has put out a call in hopes of finding a shining star. I'm still amazed how, after sifting through thousands of videos from abundantly talented musicians, we can find a common winner amongst a range of judges with such different musical backgrounds. But in the end, my All Songs Considered co-host Robin Hilton, Trey Anastasio (Phish), Miguel, Anthony Hamilton, Ben Hopkins (PWR BTTM), BANKS, and folks who listen to an awful lot of music — NPR member station hosts Rita Houston (WFUV), Talia Schlanger (WXPN), Stas THEE Boss (KEXP) — and myself were all equally charmed, delighted and captivated. (at New Orleans, Louisiana)

You Can Now Enter The 2017 Tiny Desk Contest
The 2017 Tiny Desk Contest is now open! Starting today, I'll be watching your videos in search of the next great undiscovered artist to play at the Tiny Desk. And I won't be doing it alone. Our team of judges includes these fantastic musicians:
Anthony Hamilton
Miguel
BANKS
Trey Anastasio of Phish
Ben Hopkins of PWR BTTM
I'll also be joined by Rita Houston of WFUV, Stas THEE Boss of KEXP, Talia Schlanger of WXPN's World Cafe and Robin Hilton, my co-host on All Songs Considered. We're accepting entries until Jan. 29, and we can't wait to hear what you're making.
To enter, you'll need to:
Film a video of you (or your band) performing an original song at a desk (any desk!).
Put that video on YouTube.
Submit it through our entry form by 11:59 p.m. ET on Jan. 29.
To make sure you're eligible, you can take this quiz (or check out our Official Rules for all the details). If you win, you'll get to play a Tiny Desk concert at NPR's headquarters in Washington, D.C. Plus, you'll get to come on a nationwide tour with NPR Music and Lagunitas Brewing Company.
Above all, this contest is about two things: music and community. Whether you build an elaborate, creative setup for your entry or shoot something simple on a smartphone (like last year's winner), we're listening for your music above all else.
The past two Contests have not only brought into our lives undiscovered musicians we cherish — they've also shown us what local music scenes across the country are made of. Already, we've been digging through the great behind-the-scenes pictures and videos you're posting of your entries. (Feel free to email us your behind-the-scenes shots and stories or put them on social media with the #TinyDeskContest hashtag.)
You can follow along as we fall in love with new artists and songs: We'll be sharing it all right here on the Tumblr and in our weekly newsletter. And even if you don't plan to send in a video, we hope the Tiny Desk Contest helps you discover new music and makes you proud of the musical community right in your backyard, wherever that is.
From the Tiny Desk,
Bob Boilen
