Retales Retold - Day Eleven
-A woman attempted to pay for her purchase with a Victoria’s Secret card. She was surprised that it did not work.
-I knocked over a full cup of water at my register. I had to help the next couple of guests ankle-deep in a sea of embarrassment and wet socks.
-A baby was shrieking. His parents could not stop him. Nothing could stop him. I gave him a sticker. He stopped crying. My people’s respect for me is unending. It is almost time to turn this respect into an army.
-I inadvertently taught an infant how to stick her tongue out at people. She was thrilled. I was thrilled. Her parents were not.
-A woman could not stop sneezing. She informed me that something in the store was upsetting her allergies. “It could be any department. It could be the baby aisle. It could be electronics. It could be coming from anywhere.” Her tone told me she intended to hunt down whatever she was allergic to in the store and make it pay dearly.
-A woman started lecturing a cashier about her “nasty old sweat towels.” I admire her honesty. I respect her openness. I fear her linen closet.
-A man walked by. He had biceps so large he could not put his arms down at his sides. He had legs so small I do not understand how he stood upright.
-I looked at the packaging for a pool toy and was very upset. I could not explain my feelings, but something about the design made me very uneasy. I looked at it again and understood. They airbrushed all of the nipples but one off of the boys in the pool. Why censor any nipples. Moreover, why not censor that one. I need to have a stern talk with this company. I need answers.

I can't believe I'm doing this but I need some help. Right now I lost my job at that one store that's the rival to Walmart and has a weird archery target symbol (I can't say the brand name because of possible employer retaliation). I lost this job yesterday because I thought I could trust a manager with the small mistake of cussing around them when no one else was around. Not to mention that I've got Asperger's and have been struggling to be good at customer service and have been getting too much pressure from managers and little to no assistance with my mental disability because I'm "just oblivious not disabled" or any attitude like that. I'm job hunting right now and I need a nest egg if I fall in hard times like this. The current goal is six hundred but I'll keep you updated throughout the process. I've applied to a Target and a Walmart so far and will go to other places as well to try and find a job.

The Power of Retal Signs: Here's 5 Popular Sign Options to Attract New Clientele
In the bustling world of retail, attracting new customers is essential for business growth and success. While online marketing has gained prominence, the impact of physical shop signage cannot be overlooked. Business Signage Manchester A well-designed and strategically placed shop sign can catch the eyes of passersby, pique their interest, and ultimately entice them to step inside. In this article, we will explore five of the most popular types of shop signage that businesses use to attract new customers.
Exterior Illuminated Signs
Exterior illuminated signs are among the most effective ways to capture attention, especially during nighttime or in low-light conditions. These signs utilize various lighting methods, such as neon lights or LED displays, to create a vibrant and eye-catching appearance. The illumination ensures that the shop sign remains visible and stands out in crowded streets, attracting potential customers from a distance. Moreover, the ability to customize colors and animations makes these signs versatile, allowing businesses to align their branding and promotions effectively.
A-Frame Signs
A-Frame signs, also known as sidewalk signs or sandwich boards, are a cost-effective and practical way to engage with foot traffic. These portable signs are placed outside the shop entrance or on busy sidewalks, offering a platform to display daily specials, promotions, or witty messages that can draw people in. The ability to change the content frequently keeps the messaging fresh, making A-Frame signs particularly attractive for businesses that run regular promotions or events.
Window Graphics and Decals
A well-designed window display can work wonders in enticing potential customers to explore a store further. Window graphics and decals allow businesses to showcase their products, services, or upcoming sales directly on the storefront. The key to an effective window display lies in its creativity and relevance to the target audience. By aligning the display with seasonal trends or current events, businesses can connect with customers on a personal level and create a sense of urgency to step inside the store.
3D Lettering and Channel Signs
3D lettering and channel signs offer a more sophisticated and upscale look for businesses aiming to project a sense of professionalism and quality. These signs are constructed using materials like metal, acrylic, or wood, and are raised from the surface to create a three-dimensional effect. Retail Signage Manchester The added depth and texture make the shop signage visually appealing and memorable. When strategically illuminated, these signs cast striking shadows, further enhancing their visibility and impact.
Vehicle Wraps
For businesses on the move, vehicle wraps serve as an ingenious method to attract new customers throughout the city. These wraps cover the exterior of company vehicles with vibrant graphics, logos, and contact information. Whether parked or in motion, these mobile billboards capture the attention of pedestrians, drivers, and passersby alike. Vehicle wraps are particularly effective for service-oriented businesses, such as food trucks, delivery services, and contractors, as they ensure that the brand message reaches a diverse and widespread audience.
Conclusion
In the competitive landscape of retail, shop signage plays a crucial role in attracting new customers. From the striking glow of exterior illuminated signs to the creativity of window graphics, each type of shop signage offers a unique advantage in engaging potential buyers. Leveraging the power of A-Frame signs, 3D lettering, and vehicle wraps further diversifies a business's marketing strategy and expands its reach. Summary: From Tom's Tales from the Checkout Line writing contest:
I rang up an intimidating biker with a wizardly beard for his purchase of one single Dr. Seuss book. I now consider him a close friend, as I stand by my lifelong belief that not a soul who reads Dr. Seuss can do anything wrong.

In the spirit of @targetretales, here are some of the most Interesting customers I have encountered that I can remember:
- A gay German couple who couldn’t stop arguing
- An elderly man sitting on a bench whom I asked if he needed help and his response was “yeah, can you tell my wife to hurry the hell up?”
- A rather rough-looking man with a surprisingly gentle voice who complimented me about how well the staff has handling the remodel
- A woman who yelled “PURSES” and was frustrated with me when I stared at her dumbly for several seconds
- A mechanic whom I had a long conversation with about the merits of different hand creams
- An unrelated soft-spoken middle-aged woman and “bro-y” twenty-something man who were looking for the same thing and engaged in friendly conversation
- A large visor-wearing man with a Jersey accent who wanted to know where the “fuckin shoes” were
- A man in his late 80s who told me to “fucking hurry up” (My response: “Please don’t swear at me, sir”)
- Anyone who has tried to tip me for my services (I’m not allowed to accept tips, but I’m always flattered at the gesture)
- Anyone who has asked where an item is when they’re standing less than 10 feet from it
- Anyone who has said “god bless you” after I helped them with something

Whacky Bathroom
One day as I was working a typical shift, I had to go to the bathroom. When I went in, there was someone in the normal sized stall so I went into the handicapped stall (my store only has two stalls in the men’s room).
While I was taking the Browns to the Super Bowl, I noticed that part of my neighbor’s shadow was moving. At first I brushed it off, but after I washed my hands and was leaving the bathroom, I couldn’t help but just take a quick glance into their stall through the crack.
I saw a guy with his shorts around his knees, ass facing the stall door, going to town on himself. Horrified, I exit the bathroom. I went back in shortly (about 2 minutes) after for a bathroom check and he was gone.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, I once again enter the bathroom and have to use the handicapped stall. As I washed my hands, I scanned the bathroom in the mirror and notice that my neighbor was holding his phone and his arm was moving up and down. This time, I couldn’t help myself and said “There are a lot better places to do that than the Target bathroom, my dude.”
Around 2 minutes later I came in to restock paper towels and he was gone.

Retales Retold - Day Ten
-A man hands me a wad of cash. Drugs fall out from between the bills. It was a single dose pack of ibuprofen, but regardless, I believe I was just involved in a drug deal.
-A little girl ran around the front of the store shouting “Mama Mia!” I cannot tell if her life has been heavily influenced by ABBA or Mario. Either way, she made me proud.
-A man walked away with his bag, left the store, returned to my register, informed me that he did not need the bag, removed his items, gave me the bag, and left again.
-I look down. I look back up. A man appeared silently, wearing what can only be described as black cargo scrubs. Who is he.
-Cargo scrubs man purchases lighters, toilet paper, knives, a trash can, and a rug. I want to follow him to find out more, but realistically, I will be seeing him in the news after whatever he is planning.
-A girl tried to purchase a shirt, but the tag had fallen off. She went to get another shirt that I could scan to get the price. She brings back a tag. I assume she had found the tag that had fallen off. I assumed wrong. She had torn the tag off of another shirt, thus beginning the cycle anew.
-I offered a girl an orange sticker. She politely asked for the yellow one instead. I told her she could have both. I have never seen such unadulterated joy in this world.
-A boy in his mid-teens came through my line, attempting to purchase an emergency contraceptive. He found out he did not have enough cash on hand. He left the store, returned with a stack of quarters, and was able to complete the transaction. I am glad he had a plan b.
-I handed a baby a sticker. Filled with determination, the baby attempted to place the sticker directly on their mother’s nose. The mother pointed out the paper had not been removed and peeled it off for the child. The baby then looked intently at the sticker, intently at their mother’s nose, and resumed their earlier endeavors. They were successful.
-A separate old man purchased pantyhose, a toilet brush, nail polish, and Minions wrapping paper. Happy birthday to some poor, unfortunate soul out there.
-A woman’s purchase rang up at just above $20. She pulled out a stack of cash and counted off $45 of it. She then put it back in her purse and paid with her card. I respect her style.
-This is the latest shift I have had. Target after dark is a very different experience. The silence echoes. The lights glow and fade. The customers all seem dead inside. The transformation is both sudden and gradual. I am mystified.
-I overhear a burly man on the phone as he is buying chips and drinks. “It’s the $11,000 one in the back of the room,” he tells his accomplice. “We’re going to need to retrieve it.” I am left with the obvious assumption that he is on the requisite pre-jewel heist snack run.
-I gave a baby the first sticker they had ever seen in their life. I feel so honored to have introduced this happiness into their life.
-A woman waits through my line, and approaches me, telling me she has no items but only a question. I assume this is because guest services is abandoned at this point. Once more, I prove the axiom of assuming and asses. “Are you Tom? Grennell? With the posts?” I quietly admit it. “I just wanted to say that you’re hilarious, I love your posts, and you should keep writing!” This woman has approached me just to compliment me. I am now certain these posts have been a good thing. I am now elated, flattered, and only slightly anxious. Thank you for waiting next to loud girls on FaceTime for this purpose, ma’am.
-An eerie voice echoes over the loudspeaker, counting down the last fifteen minutes before the store closes. When the ten-minute warning airs, a loud humming surrounds the store. I can only assume a UFO was making a landing. It is the only way to explain so much about this store.

Aegis - Ruthless Protector
Tumblr media
Aegis is Kairos’ older brother and commander of the Royal Knights of his country.
Aegis’ parents were always proud of their work as inventors for helping people or making their life easier and Aegis was also proud of following these ideals.
Aegis was an incredible gifted inventor himself, but decide to follow the path of knighthood to protect the people of his country in a larger scale and to help their country prosper by becoming close enough to the King to be considered his advisor.
So when war broke and his parents refuse to help him use the powerful mineral they found to create weapons to turn the tide of battle over he felt betrayed and stole the mineral to make weapons himself.
After the war ended, Aegis knew that other countries might attack out of fear of the powerful weapons he built and that they would be too weak to handle them even with these weapons if they united together so he conviced his king to sell his weapons to garther funds to rebuild the country and at the same time make them look harmless without it and too insignificant to bother in comparassion of the countries that now had the weapons.
The next step was to make extra sure that they wouldn’t ever be used. Aegis requested to the princess to make it seem like they sold his weapons behind his back and when he would steal the weapon from the first country to have him be condemned to exile and treated as a dangerous rogue knight for it, this way it would ensure his mission to recover the weapons without fear of retallation.
Aegis has such a strong sense of duty and loyalty for his country and the well being of its people that he would sacrifice anything to them, his pride, his position as a knight and even his family. Aegis didn’t kill Kairos like his parents because Kairos was nowhere as skilled as him or their parents to be able to build a powerful weapon like his.
Aegis might be ruthless but it doesn’t sit well to him to kill his younger brother so he makes sure to always beat him up whenever they meet to make sure any possible enemies dismiss him as a threat and to hinder his potential to decrease the amount of people who would target him.
Despite this conflict Aegis does wonder if one day he might need to kill Kairos, his last family, just to make sure he wouldn’t be used as his weak spot and hinder his mission.
Before things went downhill Kairos and Aegis were pretty close. Kairos admired and was proud of his older brother because the people loved him for protecting them and for taking care of the people’s rights and because of how devoted his brother was to ensure the happiness of as many people as he could. When Aegis had a break he spent his time checking Kairos’ growth as an inventor and took him along to visit other places besides his small city.

Wildfire bees on the brink

Wildfire bees on the brink
The number of threatened Australian native bee species is expected to increase by nearly five times after the devastating Black Summer bushfires in 2019-20, new research led by Flinders University has found.
With 24 million hectares of Australia’s land area burnt, researchers say the casualties are clear among bee fauna and other insects and invertebrates after studying 553 species (about one-third of Australia’s known bee species) to assess the long-term environmental damage from the natural disaster.
“Our research is a call for action, from governments and policymakers, to immediately help these and other native populations most in danger,” says lead author Flinders University PhD candidate James Dorey, who is now a postdoctoral researcher at the Yale University Center for Biodiversity and Global Change.
Of the bees studied, nine species were assessed as Vulnerable and two more Endangered as a result of the multiple fire fronts in the 2019-20 bushfires that also destroyed approximately 3000 homes and killed or displaced an estimated 3 billion animals.
The new study published in Global Change Biology warns widespread wildfire and forest fire damage is being repeated all around the world, from North America and Europe to the Congo and Asia, causing catastrophic impacts on biodiversity and sudden and marked reduction in population sizes of many species.
“In these circumstances, there is a need for government and land managers to respond more rapidly to implement priority conservation management actions for the most-affected species in order to help prevent extinctions,” says Mr Dorey.
advertisement
“Conserving insects and other less visible taxa should also be a factor in restoring and preserving some of the hundreds of bees that may not yet have been studied or recorded.”
He says the study forms a foundation for assessment of other taxa in Australia or on other continents where species are understudied and not registered on datasets or by the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN Red List).
“Climate change is increasing the frequency of natural disasters like wildfire, which impacts our wildlife,” says fellow author Dr Stefan Caddy-Retalic, from The University of Adelaide and University of Sydney.
“Our study shows that we can assess the likely impact of natural disasters on poorly studied species, even when we can’t physically visit the field to do surveys.”
“Listing severely-impacted species on the IUCN red list and under Australian law represents our best approach to lobby governments to act,” he says, adding native bees are very important providers of ecosystem services including pollination, but most are poorly known.
“Most people aren’t aware of just how vulnerable our native bees are because they are not widely studied,” adds Flinders University researcher Olivia Davies, another of the 13 authors on the major paper. “The fact that no Australian bees are listed by the IUCN shows just how neglected these important species are.”
The study, which recommends 11 Australian bee species (just 2% of those analysed) as priority taxa for listing as IUCN Threatened species, also demonstrates a new model for “using the data we already have to understand how natural disasters are likely to impact key species and their ecosystems.”
“Being able to collect targeted data will always be the gold standard but we shouldn’t let data gaps stop us from acting to protect species we know are vulnerable,” Dr Dorey concludes.
The collaborative study includes researchers from Flinders University’s Laboratory of Evolutionary Genetics and Sociality, the South Australian Museum, University of Adelaide, Curtin University, University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, Murdoch University and Charles Darwin University.
