I fucking despise how even among "progressive" kiwis, there's this weird fetishistic fascination with maori culture. Maori just existing have to be symbols of struggle and protest and spiritual guides to every goddamn cracker around them. You let slip that you're fluent at work and suddenly you have to be everyone's reo teacher. You have to do karakia at meetings so they feel like they're inclusive despite having one maori on payroll they constantly single out, lead all their cultural education, be a constant opportunity for them to prove how understanding they are. My brother can't do a haka tautoko for his friend without it being filmed and reposted without his consent so people who are afraid to actually talk to brown skinned men can comment they got goosebumps. Every tv show has one or two maori characters whose every arc is based entirely around their race. I do think things are improving and to an extent I'm glad people get to see real maori culture more but... just let us live our fucking lives.

Why I agreed with the MIQ Voucher System
Tumblr media
The point of view expressed by @openmindedkiwi is flawed and here is why. On the 21st of March 2020 New Zealand moved into alert level 4 and the whole country was made to self isolate for the first time ever, prior to moving to level four the country's borders were shut to citizens and permanent residents. On the 9th April of the same year, the New Zealand government  required everyone entering New Zealand to enter a managed isolation hotel to isolate for their first fourteen days upon arrival to limit the spread of community transmission. From the 3rd of November 2021, everyone travelling to New Zealand was required to have their managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ)   vouchers before entering the country to secure their place. The struggle of managed isolation was one that was felt by many families worldwide, the frustration of not making the draw or not being able to get enough space for all members of one family at the same time but never once were the New Zealand borders shut to its citizens or permanent residents. Although the MIQ lottery left lots of people struggling to get a spot and return to New Zealand when they wanted to, it came into place 226 days after New Zealand went into lockdown for the first time. I find it ironic that the user who posted this tweet calls themselves “openmindedkiwi” and narrates themself as anything but in their tweet. ‘Being a kiwi’ meant everything when it came to the New Zealand border and the use of MIQ’s. Being a kiwi meant that from the 9th of April to the 3rd of November you had the opportunity to have a free managed isolation stay while you completed your quarantine before entering New Zealand. Being a Kiwi meant that even if you had chosen to leave the country for somewhere else you always had the ability to come home where we were managing the pandemic far greater than other Nations. Being a kiwi meant that you were part of a group that got to escape covid when we were one of the few places who could go out without restrictions because we had done everything we could to limit the spread of community transmission. Every citizen and permanent resident of New Zealand had almost a year to come home when it suited them, if they weren't capable of flying home when the virus first arose there were months afterwards before the MIQ ballot came into place. Everyone had an opportunity to come home without having to rely on luck to get you here and that opportunity was solely based on the fact that you were a kiwi. Everyone in New Zealand at the time sacrificed something to get the freedom that we had so much earlier than the rest of the world because we were being kiwis and doing what was the right thing for all our friends, families and neighbours who were also able to call themselves kiwis. It is because of the sacrifices that all New Zealanders living in New Zealand at the time were making that people were able to return home like they did because that's what being a kiwis is all about, making sacrifices for the ones in your community. Posts and comments like this take away from the manaakitanga and tautoko our communities strengthened themselves off of to get through the struggle that lockdowns actually were on everyone whether or not they were based in the country at the time. Being a kiwi meant that you had the ability to complain about issues like waiting for a spot to get home because you waited that couple months later to leave whatever country you were residing in to enter New Zealand. It was the effort of a team of 5 million that put us in a position where not only were we able to have the freedoms we could at such an early stage in the position but also to put our returnees into MIQ’s so they could isolate for the safety of themselves and our wider communities.

Understanding the Impact of Sexual Abuse and How to Seek Support
Sexual abuse is a deeply traumatic experience that affects individuals in myriad ways. It encompasses various forms of non-consensual sexual activity, including physical contact, coercion, and exploitation. Understanding the nature of sexual abuse and its repercussions is essential for those affected, as well as for their support networks. It is crucial to recognize the signs of sexual abuse and the long-term psychological impact it can have, including conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the emotional aftermath of indecent assault. sexually assaulted hamilton
Sexual abuse can leave survivors grappling with intense feelings of shame, guilt, and confusion. These emotional responses often manifest as PTSD, a condition that involves persistent, distressing symptoms such as flashbacks, severe anxiety, and intrusive thoughts. PTSD can significantly impair a person’s daily functioning, making it challenging to engage in routine activities or maintain relationships. Recognizing these symptoms is the first step toward addressing and managing them. sexual abuse helpline
Indecent assault, a term frequently used within the context of sexual abuse, involves unwanted and inappropriate touching or sexual advances. The experience of indecent assault can be profoundly humiliating and distressing, leading survivors to experience a range of emotional and psychological effects similar to those of more overt forms of sexual abuse. have I been assaulted
Support for survivors is critical in the healing process. Organizations like Tautoko Mai offer vital resources and services, providing a 24/7 helpline for those seeking immediate and confidential assistance. Their support extends beyond immediate crisis intervention, offering long-term counseling and therapeutic services tailored to individual needs. By reaching out for help, survivors can access expert guidance and build a path toward recovery. ptsd sexual abuse
If you or someone you know is struggling with the effects of sexual abuse or indecent assault, it's important to seek help from trusted professionals. Support services can provide not only immediate relief but also ongoing care to aid in the healing journey. Remember, reaching out for support is a courageous step toward reclaiming control and finding solace.

Between 1950 and 2021, there were 1,680 allegations of abuse reported against diocesan clergy and members of Catholic religious orders or associations, according to data from Te Ropu Tautoko, a group coordinating between the commission — the highest form of investigation in New Zealand — and the Catholic Church.
The “sobering data” uncovered the scale of abuse within the Catholic Church, Katherine Anderson, a lawyer assisting the commission, said in a statement. “The research is startling, and the heartbreaking reality is that helpless and vulnerable children and adults sit behind these facts and figures.”
Accusations were levied against 14 percent of all diocesan clergy in New Zealand, according to the figures, many of them between the 1960s and the 1980s, with a majority of instances involving children at educational or residential facilities under the church’s supervision. Over half of all abuse reported involved sexual harm or other physical, emotional or psychological abuses. Others involved the failure to act on complaints.
Still, a support network for victims called the data the “tip of a huge iceberg.”

Tātua tautoko is the Māori word for strap-on, and it’s probbaly my favourite language to use in ref to my strap because tautoko literally translates to “support”. Like yes, this is my emotional support strap actually.
