J20171019-0019—Ericameria palmeri var palmeri—RPBG—DxO by John Rusk Via Flickr: Ericameria palmeri var. palmeri— Palmer's goldenbush. Included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.1 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). The tag gives the location as Otay Mountain, that refugium for rare species in San Diego County. Luckily, the plant is not quite as rare in Baja California, but even there it is threatened by development. The CNPS Inventory says there are 16 small populations north of the border. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.

J20170504-0079—Senecio palmeri—RPBG—DxO by John Rusk Via Flickr: Senecio palmeri—Palmer's sagewort. A rare plant endemic to Guadalupe Island at the southern end of California Floristic Province. When Edwin Palmer first collected the plant in 1875 he noted it was abundant on the northern end of Guadalupe. By the time Palmer returned in 1889 "...spots that contained a thicket of it have now but dead plants, with a few scattering plants alive." The plant was a victim of feral goats, like many other island species around the world. The species has recovered somewhat now that the goats have been removed. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
