A dominant species in the northern California coastal scrub, less so, in Southern California. This is the upright form often known as the subspecies consanguinea that many, but not all, references ( including The Jepson Manual, 2nd ed. and Flora of North America) recognize . This upright form can be shaped into hedges in gardens. The selection "Al's Blue" is named for Al Seneres, a now-retired garden supervisor at Regional Parks Botanic Garden. J20171005-0026—Ericameria fasciculata—RPBG—DxO by John Rusk Via Flickr: Ericameria fasciculata—Eastwood's goldenbush. The species is included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.1 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). Eastwood's goldenbush is presently found solely in Northern Monterey County. Although much habitat is protected in Fort Ord National Monument, S.F.B. Morse Botanical Preserve, and Monterey County parks, the species is sometimes inadvertently sprayed in weed abatement programs because it colonizes disturbed areas. An excellent description of the plant can be found in Elkhorn Slough Coastal Training Program fact sheet "Ericameria fasciculata" www.elkhornsloughctp.org/factsheet/factsheet.php?SPECIES_... . Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.

J20171012-0023—Ericameria cuneata—RPBG—DxO by John Rusk Via Flickr: Ericameria cuneata—rock goldenbush. Grows along both slopes of the Sierra Nevada from Sierra County southward, the Transverse Ranges, the Desert Mountains, the Peninsular Ranges into Baja California, and Eastward to Nevada and New Mexico. In habitat, it is almost always found in fissures in granite outcrops. This late-season bloomer is, thus, a good plant for rock gardens and between slabs in garden walls made of native stone. A favorite of bees, butterflies, and other insects during late summer and autumn. This Solidago is found throughout most of California except for the deserts. J20171019-0019—Ericameria palmeri var palmeri—RPBG—DxO by John Rusk Via Flickr: Ericameria palmeri var. palmeri— Palmer's goldenbush. Included in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants on list 1B.1 (rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere). The tag gives the location as Otay Mountain, that refugium for rare species in San Diego County. Luckily, the plant is not quite as rare in Baja California, but even there it is threatened by development. The CNPS Inventory says there are 16 small populations north of the border. Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.

J20170810-0003—Ericameria nauseosa (syn Chrysothamnus nauseosus )—RPBG—DxO by John Rusk Via Flickr: Ericameria nauseosa—rubber rabbitbrush. Formerly Chrysothamnus nauseosus, the species was transferred to Ericameria in the 1990s. The species is widespread through the American west and northwestern Mexico. The "rubber" part of its common name comes from the latex exuded from the plant. It was studied as a source of rubber during both the twentieth-century world wars and still is regarded as a potential source of a type of rubber.
