It won't *out you* as a ger, just as someone who's not Frum From Birth. There are lots of people who are Baal Tchuva who have tattoos as well. It's more common than you think.

I've been interested in Judaism for going on nine years. I've read so much about it but never lived near a synagogue or has the chance to visit. The next few weeks I'll be able to check it out and I've been considering this decision for a long time but I have lots of tattoos (both arms done, finger tattoos, nothing offensive or discriminating). Has anyone been able to convert and been pretty "inked"? My stepmum was raised Jewish so her tattoos came after. Thank you x

Hi anon, 

Generally speaking it isn’t an issue. One of my friends who’s in rabbinic school right now has a very large, visible tattoo that he got before converting. Really, I think the biggest issue you might run into isn’t converting in the first place, but if you are converting in a frum environment, it will “out” you as a convert later on. You also will likely need to assure your conversion rabbi and/or beit din that you are not planning on getting any more. 

Clearly if you’ve been researching this long, it’s something you’re seriously interested in. I’d lead with that in your conversation reaching out to the rabbi, and worry less about the tattoos. :) Good luck!
