Rights advocates on Tuesday blasted the conservative majority of the U.S. Supreme Court for allowing Texas to enforce Senate Bill 4, a contested law empowering local and state authorities to arrest and deport undocumented immigrants.

"Today's decision is disappointing and threatens the integrity of our nation's immigration laws and bedrock principles of due process," said Anand Balakrishnan, senior staff attorney at the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project. "But it is only preliminary and turned on the specific posture of the case. We'll continue to fight against S.B. 4 until it is struck down once and for all."

After Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill in December, the national and state ACLU joined Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) in filing a lawsuit on behalf of American Gateways, Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, and El Paso County. The U.S. Department of Justice has also argued that "it is flatly inconsistent with federal law in all its applications, and it is therefore preempted on its face."

U.S. District Judge David Ezra last month issued a preliminary injunction blocking the law from taking effect while it is challenged on constitutional grounds. The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals issued an administrative stay, which the justices left in place on Tuesday.

In a concurring opinion that Law Dork's Chris Geidner called "embarrassingly absurd," Justice Amy Coney Barrett—joined by fellow right-winger Brett Kavanaugh—highlighted that this was just a stay decision and they weren't yet weighing in on the merits.

You often hear of the Reach's charity. How orphanages have assortments of charities that wealthy nobles spare a few coin for. But, rarely, do you ever hear of the forgotten souls that reside in Lion's Arch. Many children are homeless and remain orphaned from the attack only a few years ago. The free city is many things but benevolent is rarely one of them. While we may not be able to provide these children with the safer lives those in the Reach find, perhaps we can give them creature comforts during the long nights.  That's where you come in. We are searching for Tyria's finest inventors to create toys this child's moon. Our charitable sponsors are covering the costs of this event so that you may have supplies. Tinkers 4 Tots is an event held in Lion's Arch for the downtrodden children of the Free City. There will be a toymaking competition, a build a lion station, merchant stalls, and a donation booth. Part 1

Fangs & Feathers

It had been about a month since the Lantern arrived in the Free City. The excitement came in waves and Serenity hated being on the water. While the others sought and found Llinos, searched for Eos, and collected work with the refugees, Serenity's mind had predominantly been elsewhere. She perched herself throughout the city at various times of the day -- ruining her sleep schedule -- in favor of taking in the view. The view, specifically, being the work of familiar operatives around a city claiming freedom.

But she wasn't the only one doing the watching.

Ren settled herself on the edge of the overlook with both a cup and pot of hot coffee. The whisper of fabric behind her hadn't drawn her attention from the fields. It wasn't until the taste of metal bit against her throat that Ren took pause to acknowledge the shadow behind her. She rolled her lips inwards, pursed them, and then brought the mug up to her mouth. She sipped the black beverage and then started to lower the mug. Only, the burning substance was quickly thrown over her shoulder as she leaned back from the blade.

The schademancer was quick. She pivoted in her seat and vanished. The agent turned to face his back but Renni reappeared in her spot. She delivered a harsh kick to his spine which sent him stumbling forward. He was quick to recover -- least his ability as an agent be questioned -- and he pivoted while he brought his blade around to catch her. Ren blocked his attack with a forearm to his wrist but his other hand snatched her throat. Ren tilted her head up with some defiance and brought her knee up to his groin. No one said she had to play fair.

His grip on her released as he keeled forward. Ren delivered a blow to his face with her opposite knee. The agent was thrown back to his ass. His blade dropped a few feet away. Ren drew her blades and twisted them around in her palms. She stepped over to him while he tried to regain his composure. Calmly, she set herself atop of him. Her knee pressed against his chest to pin him to the ground. The shadows of the night started to loom closer to the man as one blade was pressed against his kidney and the other his throat.

"I'd kill you right now if I wasn't trying to play nice with the locals."

"Too nice."

"Ooh, is that the toe I stepped on? Too bad I don't give a fuck."

"If you throw the balance the order will end."

"Honey, I think you got bigger problems than me creating chaos."

"Hope is a dangerous trade."

Ren leaned down until her lips nearly touched to the agent's mask. She grinned a little as blue strands hung shadows over her features.

"You fly back to your flock, little bird, and you tell them that I like danger. And, should they bore me with another song, I'll remind the sparrows what happens when you play with a cat."

Ren kissed his nose and shoved off him. She took a step back towards her coffee and waited for the man to stand. Piercing blue gaze watched him as he stood there and considered his survival. He made a glance towards his blade which caused Serenity to click her tongue. The tension was easy to spot in his eyes. Soon enough, he pivoted on his heel and proceeded with his walk of shame. He vanished into the shadows near the stairway and Renni sighed. Calmly, she made her way over to the dagger he left behind. Its make was studied as she poured herself a new cup of coffee.

"Politics," she murmured, "one of the things I hated most about Kryta."
