Some of my studio colleagues will be returning to the studio on Monday, in limited capacity and carefully structured rota of course. Some of you already know my fabulous smarty pants boyfriend is working in space and space related research, kind difficult to describe so I'll leave it at that. Totally too smart for me, but over the years I have figured out that science and art are perfect together and there are so many correlations that you can draw from one to the other. So you could say that my work is nature-earth-space inspired. Like these cheese platters - satellite images - looking at earth from afar, from space or - images of planets - looking at objects in space from the comfort of our homes. . Since I am not able to work in the studio and am taking a short break from my shop I have had some time to learn more about clay and glazes. A family of small black clay vases glazed with white glaze. The iron in the black clay is so strong that it reacts with the white glaze more than any other clay, this makes a very unique rustic effect. I pour the glaze over the vases very organically, leaving some areas with thin layer of glaze and some with thicker layer of glaze. All clay comes from nature, though most of us potters use bought clay that allows us to keep consistency in the work we make. To bring more uniqueness and nature into the clay that I use I add in sands that I collect on my travels. Thinking about the future of my work I plan to be using more wild clay. You can find it easily next to river stream and lakes. A few balls of clay I collected yesterday are now almost dry. It is a nice light grey colour and I am really looking forward to seeing how it fires, it will definitely change colour and it might melt or bubble, but maybe it will make a few nice unique pieces.
