Mimicking tectonics and layers of rocks and earth in this collection of handbuilt vases from last year. Today I was walking thorough the woods and stumbled upon some more clay, this time nice and orange-brown in colour. The one I found last time was grey. Since I am not able to work in the studio and am taking a short break from my shop I have had some time to learn more about clay and glazes. There is so much to learn, so many things I still don't know and am excited to have more time to do some reading, listen to lectures and research. Thank god for the internet! When I was younger I was very rarely using small dishes like these in the kitchen and at the dining table, but in the past few years I stated using them spontaneously and now I use them all the time in preparing and serving food. A family of small black clay vases glazed with white glaze. The iron in the black clay is so strong that it reacts with the white glaze more than any other clay, this makes a very unique rustic effect. I pour the glaze over the vases very organically, leaving some areas with thin layer of glaze and some with thicker layer of glaze. All clay comes from nature, though most of us potters use bought clay that allows us to keep consistency in the work we make. To bring more uniqueness and nature into the clay that I use I add in sands that I collect on my travels. Thinking about the future of my work I plan to be using more wild clay. You can find it easily next to river stream and lakes. A few balls of clay I collected yesterday are now almost dry. It is a nice light grey colour and I am really looking forward to seeing how it fires, it will definitely change colour and it might melt or bubble, but maybe it will make a few nice unique pieces. Quite a large onion, huh? I haven't seen this shape as an onion shape until this photo came along, but you have to have some fun sometimes. . Today is my first day of my short break from my shop and I am missing it already, but I am enjoying it too. I have been going 130km/h since the lockdown started. This wasn't my intention when it began, but it just gradually happened to be really busy and I am delighted about that, but a short break will give me mor energy and ability to plan new work when I'm able to go back to the studio.
