Born of Osiris - The Simulation
Tumblr media
It’s been awhile for me with Born of Osiris. I remember getting on board the hype train pretty early during their come-up thanks to the exciting novelty of their style, and while they were definitely bringing something new and exciting to deathcore and progressive death metal with their blend of flashy technicality, djenty groove, and electronic flair, it still felt like there was work to be done. To say that Born of Osiris were style over substance would be a bit harsh, but after their breakthrough EP, the three albums that followed each felt like the band were just re-introducing the same style without really going anywhere or getting a better handle on their EDM-tinged techdeathcore sound.
It’s been a little over three years since the slight improvement that characterized 2015′s Soul Sphere, and Born of Osiris are back, but starting 2019 small, with The Simulation being the first of two planned releases this year. With 8 tracks clocking in at just under 26 minutes, it’s a concise, well-trimmed album that indeed finds the band working well with the time they have and making sure that what they bring to the table is all killer, no filler.
I wouldn’t say this is the representation of the band’s full potential or even best the band have ever done, but it’s a glimpse into their ability to indeed thrive with the style they’ve cultivated for themselves.
Melodically driven choruses of those like “Cycles of Tragedy” and especially “Under the Gun” give off hints of flirtation with radio accessibility in ways that made me nervous during my first listens, but thankfully Born of Osiris stick the landing with them and dodge the potential traps of unfitting poppy melodies or redundant repetition within unimaginative structures.
Meanwhile, traditionally djenty tracks like “Silence in the Echo” and the slightly hardcore-influenced “Disconnectome” highlight the band’s instrumental prowess, while the techdeath-y closer (“One Without the Other”) and the subtly electronic opener (“The Accursed”) show the band with a much firmer grasp on their style than on albums past.
I think this was a pretty smart release for the band, or at least it seems to be given that there is apparently another one coming. The band did well to trim the fat and harness the unique aspects of their sound into something less clumsy than what made previous albums like Tomorrow We Die Alive and The Discovery so frustrating. It seems Born of Osiris are finally coming into their own and learning the art of this special sound they’ve engineered for themselves, but whether they can maintain this level of proficiency on their next installment of this year’s material will be the true test of their mettle. This first one, though, does have me looking forward to hearing it.
