We are having to have an ‘Open’ style studio presentation for our deadline assessment. We have been told to present one or two pieces that may be your strongest or most influential to your studio practice. I’ve decided to present a film and a photograph.

For the film I’ve had to book out a media box and hdmi cable from the AV rental store in the Univeristy while I was able to borrow a television screen from the Fine Art Department.

Clásicos Instantáneos: La rabia cruda de Fontaines D.C.

Entre lo mejor que he escuchado este 2019 —casi podría afirmar que el mejor álbum de todos— está Dogrel, el debut del quinteto dublinés Fontaines DC. Once canciones que abrevan de la mejor vena punk británica, pero que no le dan la espalda, para bien de las mismas, al folk y la gran tradición literaria de su tierra. The Pogues, The Clash, Billy Bragg, son algunos de los ecos que pueden escucharse en la música del grupo que encabeza Grian Chatten, un frontman con estrella, personalidad y carisma. Rabia eléctrica a tope, destilada a conciencia y con la suspicacia de quien escupe frases que se instalan en la memoria de quien las escucha, y que remiten al momento actual por el que transita el Reino Unido.

        Dogrel arranca con “Big”, ni siquiera dos minutos de afirmación a la pertenencia que estos jóvenes tienen hacia su ciudad y los sueños que construyen en sus calles. Dublin en la lluvia es mía / Una ciudad embarazada con mente católica”, cantan en su primer verso para, a continuación, repetir en su estribillo la consigna que parece haberse cumplido ahora que han cosechado prestigio y fama: “Mi infancia fue pequeña / Pero yo seré grande.”

        Mucho hay de James Joyce en las letras de Dogrel. “Shashasha”, su segundo track por ejemplo, alude a los taxistas que recorren Dublín, de cierto modo evocando a Leopold Bloom, el protagonista de Ulises, la celebrada obra del escritor irlandés. Una recurrencia temática que también da vida a “Boys in theBetterLand”, sin duda uno de los mejores tracks del álbum, y el que quizás en mejor medida exhibe la potencia sonora de Fontaines D.C… No estás vivo hasta que comienzas a patear / Cuando el cuarto da vueltas y las palabras no se pegan / Y la radio habla solamente de una modelo que escapó con cara de pecado y un corazón como una novela de James Joyce…” Sus primeros versos no niegan ni el coraje punk ni el orgullo irlandés que distingue su propuesta, dos de las obsesiones de su obra. En su estribillo, indirectamente recuerdan aquellas grandes canciones del Born to Run de Bruce Springsteen, donde se plantea la carretera como el vehículo para dejar atrás le mediocridad en que se vive. **“Si eres una estrella de rock, una estrella porno, una súper estrella, no importa lo que seas”, canta Chatten sobre un riff contagioso para, enseguida, rematar con: “Consíguete un buen auto y lárgate de aquí…”

“Too Real”, “TelevisionScreens”, “HurricaneLaughter”, “Liberty Belle” son otras canciones en las que asimismo puede hacerse un alto y profundizar en ellas. Y así ratificar el malestar social post-Brexit que inspira a Fontaines D.C. Bueno, eso y la forma drástica en que descargan su furia existencial a través del rock crudo y visceral que parece ser signo de su generación.

        Y es que el mismo estilo musical que sirvió de catalizador social en los 70, está de vuelta, inspirando a una serie de proyectos que incluso han conseguido ser nominados para el Mercury Prize, el galardón más prestigiado en la música inglesa. Allí están, codo a codo con Fontaines D.C., los londinenses Black Midi junto a los nativos de Bristol, Idles —junto a quienes los irlandeses realizaron su primera gira por Estados Unidos a mitad de 2019—. A ellos habría que sumar a los también ingleses Shame, quienes debutaron el año pasado, con el soberbio Songs of Praise. Cuatro nombres que redibujan el mapa musical del nuevo rock en el Reino Unido.
