Monkeying around in Costa Rica

No alarm clock was needed to get up this morning. Well, unless you count the sun as an alarm clock. I had my first Costa Rican breakfast this morning - beans and rice (and scrambled eggs). This served as the perfect fuel for the rest of my day.

Palo Verde is made up of the marsh land surrounding the Tempisque river. A boardwalk just a short walk from the research station I am staying at gives a beautiful view of the landscape. Iguanas litter both the boardwalk and the research station, akin to squirrels in the States. Walking out on the marsh was surprising as much of the land is very dry since the rainy season has not yet started here. We chased away some cows that control some of the invasive plants of the marshland by our presence (the land was originally ranch land). A thunderstorm chased us away but the rain never came.

We went on a boat ride on the Tempisque to observe the wildlife of the area. I saw many more iguanas, some crocodiles, a few monkeys, and a lot of birds. My neck was hurting from all of the craning (pun intended) that I did for the duration of the 2-hour tour. The highlight of the tour was definitely the breeze we created by moving at a high speed down the river.

A brief hike after lunch was very fruitful in the sighting of more animals. The birds and dragonflies were very abundant. I was also able to spot some agouti, a coati mundi, and lots of monkeys. You can hear a monkey, or rather a troop of monkeys, before you can see them. I got to see some white-faced capuchins up close. So close, in fact, that one monkey bared its teeth at me (a sign of aggression I quickly took as my cue to walk away). Later, I spotted a troop of mantled howler monkeys, complete with little baby monkeys!

A night hike after dinner (because the sun sets here around 6) wasn’t as fruitful animal-wise. However, I was able to experience a different type of firefly that I was not accustomed to. The fireflies here flash cold, staccato lights that completely surround you on the trails. It almost feels like you are surrounded by strobing fairies. This effect was rather disorienting, and my attempts to catch any firefly was unsuccessful.

Desaparecidos Zapopan: Hay coincidencias físicas entre restos hallados

Jalisco .- La Fiscalía del Estado confirmó este jueves que se presentó una octava denuncia de desaparición relacionada con el caso de los siete empleados del call center, y dio a conocer que entre los restos humanos extraídos el miércoles de una barranca en Mirador Escondido de Zapopan hay coincidencias físicas con las víctimas.

Ayer continuaron las labores de búsqueda en la zona en la localidad de Tempisque, de donde un día antes extrajeron 45 bolsas de plástico con restos humanos, como parte de las acciones en torno a las indagatorias por la desaparición de los trabajadores del call center.

Las autoridades estatales sostuvieron una reunión con familiares de las víctimas, y les informaron que, en un cruce de información preliminar, los cuerpos encontrados coincidían con las características físicas de algunos de los jóvenes desaparecidos, sin embargo, hasta el cierre de esta edición, se estaba en espera de que el Instituto Jalisciense de Ciencias Forenses emitiera los dictámenes correspondientes para que se confirmaran las identidades de las víctimas.

Además, se dio a conocer que la octava persona desaparecida en el caso es Juan Antonio, de 34 años; el último contacto que se tuvo con él fue el pasado 22 de mayo cuando se dirigía a trabajar al inmueble ubicado en la colonia Jardines Vallarta, uno de los cateados por la dependencia estatal, el otro se encuentra en la colonia La Estancia, ambos en Zapopan.

La denuncia fue interpuesta por sus familiares ante la Fiscalía Especial de Personas Desaparecidas, quienes señalaron al agente del Ministerio Público que la desaparición de José Antonio podría estar relacionada con los siete empleados de la misma empresa: Arturo Robles Corona, de 30 años; Carlos Benjamín García Cuevas, de 31; Carlos David Valladolid Hernández, de 23; Itzel Abigail Valladolid Hernández, de 27 años; Jorge Miguel Moreno Morales, de 28 años; Mayra Karina Velázquez Durán, de 29, y Jesús Alfredo Salazar Ventura, de 37.

Cabe recordar que el pasado miércoles el asesor jurídico de los familiares de los jóvenes, Samuel Amir Robles, ya había hecho referencia a que “estamos hablando de más de ocho personas desaparecidas”, aunque las autoridades estatales mantenían siete como cifra oficial hasta que finalmente ayer confirmó a la octava víctima. Los familiares de los jóvenes declinaron dar declaraciones sobre la información dada a conocer por la Fiscalía del Estado, y solamente adelantaron que hoy llevarán a cabo una marcha silenciosa a las cinco de la tarde en las inmediaciones de La Minerva.

Una de las líneas de investigación que siguen las autoridades estatales y federales tiene que ver con una red de empresas mexicanas que realizaban fraudes señaladas el pasado 27 de abril por el Departamento del Tesoro de Estados Unidos, el cual detalla nombres fiscales de 19 supuestas compañías que vendían los tiempos compartidos, el sitio donde operaban y el tipo de clientes que estafaban, principalmente personas de la tercera edad en retiro o jubilación de nacionalidad estadunidense.
