Todays rip: 08/07/2023
I've won, but at what cost
Season 6 Featured on: SiIvaGunner's Highest Quality Rips: Volume FF
Ripped by eg_9371
youtube
Requested by @undertale-vs-fortnite-who-wins
Season 6 of SiIvaGunner is immensely interesting to look back on, as it sort of carries an air of melancholy throughout. Though it had its fair share of average SiIva events, it was a season that, perhaps as a sheer coincidence, both began and ended with very important farewells. The Season's ending is a story for another time. Today, we're here to mourn the loss of GilvaSunner, the channel that arguably laid the groundwork for VGM on YouTube as a whole.
As I'm sure many are aware, GilvaSunner - thats with an L, not an uppercase i - was one of the leading channels for accessing video game music on YouTube, particularly from Nintendo music, in the 2010s and late 2000s. The channel's branding, thumbnails, description and mission statement of providing quality above all else were all things adopted by SiIvaGunner, both to help sell the original idea of impersonation whilst also building on it as a form of parody. The two existed in harmony, with GilvaSunner mostly inactive and SiIvaGunner existing as a giant tribute to video game music on the site as a whole. Through an increasingly heated copyright battle between himself and Nintendo, the channel admin of GilvaSunner was eventually forced to close the channel down, officially commencing on the 4th of February 2022. With him, a giant archive of video game music was lost, alongside all the voices and comments that had once occupied each and every upload. It didn't matter that the content that was lost wasn't original: In a way, an entire community was lost that day.
On the day of GilvaSunner's deletion, the entire SiivaGunner channel paid its respects through an event. The event posted several dozen rips in just one day, with per-game batches uploaded simultaneously to mirror the upload schedule of the original channel. In the end, it was all capped off with rips from Tengami: the very game that GilvaSunner and SiIvaGunner's header image is sourced form.
As the event's final rip, I've won, but at what cost (known otherwise as Loneliness - Tengami on the YouTube channel) holds that melancholy feeling more than any other that day. The rip initially appears to be the typical SiIva melodyswap medley, only it doesn't swap to any of SiIva's own themes. Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road, Super Mario Galaxy, Mother 3: The track throughout all its melodyswaps celebrates everything that the original GilvaSunner channel itself loved, what its most remembered uploads were, and gives them an exceptionally emotional touch through the source track. Its only at the very end that Snow Halation from Love Live is added to close the theme out, as the visuals and song both fade.
Divorced from its original context in Love Live, Snow Halation on SiIvaGunner has to me always held weight as a theme of hope and revival, as the theme that originally brought SiIvaGunner out of the Reboot in Season 1. Arguably, its the theme most emblematic of the passion found in SiIva audience, from its initial hatedom to the wave of people now woefully attached to it - myself included. In mourning Gilva's closure and moving on throughout the 6th season of SiIva, Snow Halation playing here feels like a passing of the torch - as a reminder that, though we've lost one, the passion and spark of the SiIvaGunner channel refuses to ever let it die.
A cherry blossom falls
Death's embrace
A new beginning

One of the main things I want to do visually is get across the literal story within a story aspect of the wizard telling his life story to an author of my game through the art style. I wasn't exactly sure how to find inspiration for this kind of thing but after a few rewordings of a google search and tracing back some vague memories of some games I found a few things that I thought might be interesting.
The first thing that came to mind when thinking about portraying the narrative aspect was a vague memory about a game that took a very literal approach with the whole thing being based around drawings in a note book and after tracing back to where I heard about it I found out that it was a game called drawn to death. The idea of having the game being based around sketches in a note book allows for a lot of over the top child like ideas to be brought to life in a fun way which I think works great in the context of drawn to death but wouldn't work as well in the context of my games narrative as I think it'll lessen the scale of the set pieces within the stories which I want to be one of the main focuses so I think something that has a better balance between being story like as well as feeling large scale.
One of the games from the website I linked at the top that immediately stood out to me was Tengami for the way many of the environmental elements look like they've been cut from paper or cardboard and then put together to create the environment. Particularly in that first blue screenshot with the light house I think it retains a sense of scale while still looking hand crafted and story like. I think using paper cut out like environments like this would be perfect for creating that novelized look I want the game to have while also creating a contrast between background elements and mechanical elements to retain visual clarity but I have some worries about how it'll look in a 3D space from a first person perspective that my game will have compared to the side view perspective of Tengami.
One games visual style that I think looks awesome and would fit my game is fire watch where the 3D models blend into hand drawn visuals that I think give it a kind of self contained within a story look which is exactly what I want for my game. I think it will allow the levels to have the story-book like feel that I want without using a style that could affect the visual clarity of the game since the drawn like a story book visual elements are all in the background which I think also helps reinforce that the player is living out the wizards story as its being written rather than reading the book once its done. The main problem with this style is how do I create those background visual elements and how do I smoothly blend between them and the closer up clearer fully 3D elements. Both of these are technical problems that I think I could figure out with some trial and error.
One style that I think would be quite easy to do on a technical level is that one used in arise where everything is just 3D models but the textures and effects applied to them the game an illustrated feel in a 3D setting without drawing huge amounts of things by hand. This style allows it to convey emotions throughout each part of the game using its various color palettes, lighting and various other atmospheric elements. Throughout my 2 years at college I think I've gotten quite good at making use of unreal's built in tools like post process effects and fogs to create a unique atmosphere for my games and quite keen on giving each of the wizards story's a unique easily identifiable color palette so I think this style would be relatively easy for me to pull off as well as making it easier to convey certain more abstract elements of the wizards stories through the visuals and the the fact that my game will be built around these hard to believe stories means I could get very creative with the some of the imagery in this kind of style.

’ you knew you won, so what’s the point of keeping score? ’
“There’s a difference between winning by a hairs-breadth and winning by a sizeable margin, Megumi.”
Whatever exasperation he conveyed was easily masked by his overlying cheer. Indeed, the languid ease at which he consistently bested Satoru in hand-to-hand never failed to please. Victory was generally assured in five rounds out of five on an average day. Four if he was feeling particularly merciful.
“Besides, it never hurts to keep score.” Suguru carefully retired his bun as he shrugged, he’d never been too fond of having it left loose and plastered with sweat.
“Satoru needs to be humbled once a week. He gets particularly infuriating otherwise.”

it’s the uniform that catches her attention. Was she jealous? Of course she was. It seemed like there were a few students who had passed through here -- she wonders what kind of herbs or deterrent they were looking for. And she thanks whoever it is that was watching over her that she was here alone today. ( they didn’t like her talking to students because it only gave her more of a reason to want to go to school. ) It was too dangerous ;; she can hear them saying again. It’s a breath of relief after being bedridden for a few days , something she can be happy about , she wonders that kind of stories he has.
It takes a few moments to build up courage , but from behind the desk , she just speaks up --
“ is that a school uniform you’re wearing? “
