Zimbabwean-born Scholar, Dr Tererai Trent To Be Honoured With NYC Statue

Zimbabwean-born scholar, author and humanitarian Dr Tererai Trent has been named as one of the 10 most inspiring women in the world, for her dedicated work in championing gender equality.

As part of an inniative dubbed “Statues for Equailty,” the African academic will have a statue erected in her honour at the Rockefeller Centre in New York City, recognizing Trent dedicating her life to promoting equal rights for girls and women. Tererai Trent will be honoured alongside other big names such as Janet Mock, Gabby Douglas, Pink and the beloved Oprah Winfrey.

A rural girl from a small village in Zimbabwe named Zvipani, Trent, who was once unable to attend school as a minor, now promotes and helps build schools in her home nation. A two-time guest on Oprah’s self-titled “Oprah Winfrey Show,”  Tererai Trent is an award-winning author, who penned the self-help book titled “The Awakened Woman: Remembering & Igniting Our Sacred Dreams” as well as multiple other titles.

A massive congratulations to Dr Tererai Trent, and Thank you for flying the flag for Zimbabwe and Africa.

Finally found some time to crack open this bad boy. This year I’ve been reading a lot of books on procrastinating less (still do it) and being more intentional/productive (still a work in progress). The more I’ve read the more I got tired of asking what if and this book couldn’t have come at a better time. Bugün ilginç bir seminere katıldım... Sabancı Vakfı'nın bu yıl yedincisini düzenlediği "Filantropi Semineri"ne... Son dört yıldır bu semineri takip ediyorum; ancak diyebilirim ki en ilgi çekici seminerlerden biri oldu bu yılki seminer... Tabii bunda konuklarının çok önemli bir rolü var.. Bu yılki seminerin konukları, "Girls Not Brides" adlı uluslararası çocuk gelinler platformunun başkanı Hollanda Prensesi Mabel van Oranje ve Zimbabve’de yoksullukla mücadelede eğitimi çıkış noktası olarak gören ve kendisi de çocuk yaşta evlenmesine rağmen verdiği zorlu hayat mücadelesiyle imkansızlıkları aşan Tinogona Vakfı’nın kurucusu Dr. Tererai Trent'di...

Seminerin bu yıl ki teması ise “İmkansızı Zorlamak” tı ve bu iki kadın lider, imkansızlıkları yenmek üzere verdikleri mücadeleyi izleyicilere paylaştılar.... Oranje ve Trent, çocuk yaşta evliliklerden eğitimde fırsat eşitliğine, geniş bir yelpazede kadın liderlerin toplumsal gelişmedeki rolünü anlattılar.. Aslında bu iki kadın lider, hikayeleri ile de dikkat çekiciydi. Hollanda Prensesi kısa bir süre önce prens eşini kaybetmiş... Ancak belki de yaşadığı bu acı onu, sahip olduğu olanaklarla yardıma ihtiyacı olan insanların hayatında fark yaratmaya daha da yöneltmiş.. Kendini erken yaşta evlendirilen kız çocuklarına adamış... Oranje tüm dünyada, tüm dinlerde kız çocuklarının erken yaşta evlendirildiğinin görüldüğünü söylüyor. Amacı ise bir asır içinde erken yaşta evliliklerin tamamen ortadan kalkması.. Bunun içinde tüm dünyaya bu sorunun çözümü için birlikte hareket edelim mesajı veriyor... Dr. Tererai Trent ise aslında bir çocuk gelin... Zimbabve'de imkânsızlıklar içinde yaşıyor... Geleneklerine göre yeni doğan bir bebeğin göbeği, iyi bir gelecek dileğiyle toprağa gömülüyor... Tererai de günün birinde hayallerini gömüyor toprağa ve mücadelesine başlıyor... Lise diplomasını alması 10 yılı buluyor ama yılmıyor. Amerika'ya gidiyor, burada üniversiteyi bitiriyor ve doktorasını tamamlıyor. Ardından ülkesine dönüyor ve kurduğu okullarla kız çocuklarının eğitim olanaklarından yararlanması için çalışıyor. Tererai ünlü talk Showcu Oprah Winfley'in en ilgi çekici konukları arasında yer alıyor hatta Winfrey, Tererai'nin Vakfı'na 1,5 milyon dolar bağışlıyor. Tererai, mücadelesine, tüm dünyaya hikayesini anlatarak devam ediyor. Bugün bu iki kadın lideri izlerken, aslında içimizde saklı duran potansiyeli düşündüm.. Gerçekten onların da yaptığı gibi fark yaratabiliriz... Bence temel mesele bir vizyon ortaya koyabilmekte... Hedef belirlemekte ve bu hedefe ulaşmak için kararlılıkla çalışmakta.. Ve buradan yine kendime dönüyorum... Uzun zamandır arka planda duran ve bugün netlik kazandırdığım hedefime. Afrikalı bir çocuk gelin imkansızlıklar içinde doktora yapmayı başarmış... The choice to work or not to work is not discussed. Working becomes the norm. The responsibilities of taking care of loved ones. Wishing and rooting for their dreams to come through. 🌻🌻🌻 My dreams are at a stop, fully cemented into an unknown location. Working becomes the fuel of hope for a breakthrough. Something to show for the hard work. The race never ends and there are no refunds. When I realize this is not how to run my life, it all feels like a scam. Ho do I start treating myself to an occasional off day in my mindset. 🌻🌻🌻 That day comes and does not last long because the food I have cooked is enjoyed when shared. I take the call to come back to work and leave without taking care of myself. Because my responsibilities have just increased.
