Digital Games

Today I played a couple of interesting games which included, QWOP, Tetrisweeper and This is the only level. We were looking at critical connections between the games and I instantly thought of QWOP and Tetrisweeper just because of the frustrating aspect of both games.

In QWOP you control a runner character with q and w controlling their thighs and o and p controlling their calves. This makes it extremely hard and frustrating to move your character forward.

Then the other game, Tetrisweeper which is a really cool game I suggest you to check it out is a combination of Tetris and MineSweeper where to get rid of a row you also have to finish the Minesweeper puzzle of that row.

I found the frustration to be different between the two games though as Tetrisweeper was frustrated because of my own gameplay with it being very time-sensitive I was making mistakes. While QWOP is just frustrating as a game because one click of a key could make you fall.

Lastly, I wanted to bring up This is the only level because I really like the concept of keeping the exact same level although changing some mechanics ever so slightly. I remember it as a game from my childhood although I don't remember where I played it but I do remember having a good time.

Three of the games I played with my partner during this lab was "This is the Only Level," "Tetrisweeper," and "Office Space." Overall, these games displayed an aesthetic of challenge.

I think between "This is the Only Level" and "Office Space," the difficulty between the two were very similar. I could jump in right away and I knew what I was doing, despite the obstacles. In "This is the Only Level," each stage had a new secret you had to find that affected how you can complete that stage. In "Office Space," there was only one main stage with the objective being messing with items in the map to mess with your coworkers and not get caught. I found both to be entertaining and stimulating in the short period of time we played it. The mechanics and play style for both were different. "This is the Only Level" fell into under a more platformer-style game, where the player has to move the elephant through the obstacles to reach the end point on this 2D space. "Office Space" was more of a simulation game, where you are this worker in an office and you're put into a position of completing tasks to mess with your coworkers.

The third game "Tetrisweeper" was a lot more difficult to get into. I've played both "Tetris" and "Minesweeper" but this game felt more difficult in starting off in comparison to the two previous games. The rules of playing the game weren't very clear to me and I found it hard to progress in comparison.

I both enjoyed trying out each game myself and watching my partner play. I think the main difference in especially games with the aesthetic of challenge is that I want to try playing it myself when the person I'm playing gets stuck. At the same time, when I'm playing for awhile and I get stuck on something, it can get frustrating. Being able to switch on and off to share ideas to get out of obstacles was also a fun in itself.

levels 1-5: nice chill relaxing time. this is fun. don't fret if you fuck up, it's super easy to fix, you've got plany off time levels 6-7: hmm. getting a bit fast. you should lock in levels 8-9: this is really tough, if you make a single mistake you're probably done for unless you play the best tetrisweeper of your life level 10: yeah you're fucked. literally unplayable. just give up. like you're dead. this is straight up impossible

I'm loving Tetrisweeper (#41 worldwide hell yeah) but I'm especially loving the community using specific Tetris and Minesweeper vocabulary simultaneously when I understand nothing about either of them
