As days turn to weeks, the need to lift my face to the sun and breathe in the sweet scent of a spring day grows strong. When it overtakes me, I pack the necessities of life into the passenger seat of my car and head for the countryside. Pit stop, Main Street, Waelder, Texas. (True story: On a family vacation stricken with car trouble, my cousins and siblings spent most of July 4th, 1965, stuck in Waelder when our '61 Volkswagen bus blew a cylinder. While my father and uncle went back to Houston for help, we sat under shade trees in the Waelder school yard, and trekked up to this very gas station to buy Dreamsicles to cool off. They sold out. Fischer Hall The hall has stood on this very ground since the end of the 19th century. It initially started as a community school. However, the friendly community soon realised that perhaps they didn’t want to be too friendly with their neighbours a little down the road at Cranes Mill, especially during dances. They got themselves a one-eyed carpenter and proceeded to convert this hall into a proper venue where the community could organise their own weddings, dances and parties. While I haven’t heard too much of his music, or seen the movie, Willie Nelson shot parts of the 1980 movie, ‘Honeysuckle Rose’, right here. Sure enough, when we landed a little late that evening, there was a party in full swing. Ordinarily, while I would have loved to gate-crash this party, my friends assured me it might not be the wisest thing to do. . . . Read more on the blog.
