Italy, of course, has a long history of textile production and of fashion, but I only just learned about the Museum of Textiles in Prato, Italy, which is in Tuscany. It has two shows running at the same time, one called Two Centuries of Fashion and Textiles Design which runs plus a more focused show on Kimono - Reflections of Art between Japan and the West. Both are open through November 19, 2023.

I spent Friday and Saturday of last week attending an amazing symposium here at UW Madison! Organized by professor Marina Moskowitz, Teaching Textiles featured speakers from the US and UK all talking about the history of textiles education. It was ~fascinating~! PLUS, each symposium attendee got a tote bag screen printed (by me!) with an embroidery design, needles and thread so that they could stitch while they listened! It was a super fun way to tie history to the present and getting to see how differently everyone’s bags came out was a joy. Denim originated from an Indian fabric known as dungaree!

Yes, dungaree was inspiration for today’s most loved fabric denim. Dungaree is an indigo dyed thick cotton fabric. In the beginning, dungaree fabric was made with indigo warp and undyed white weft 2×2 twill weave. Hence the fabric had the unique shaded effect with shaded indigo in right side and faded bluish white in wrong side.
