I had a stressful thing happen a couple of months ago and I decided to ‘do something for me’ right.
I set up a Nano tank with an Aquaone dynamic 58 I got from my LFS. It’s not super weird but I had never seen a tall tank like this and was super hyped to try building upwards instead of the usual wide tanks.
I’ve stocked it with 2 bamboo shrimps, 1 vampire shrimp, 2 Pygmy corys, various neocardina shrimp, 3 Thai micro crabs, two killifish, various snails, 3 amano shrimp.
The killifish have been a dream fish for me since I was a teenager, but because I always had either larger community tanks or dedicated betta tanks I was never able to get them. I’m sooooo glad that they get to be the top of the food chain in here and live out their lives as tyrants.I’m hoping to trade a guy for some of his neocardinas too.
I really recommend keeping a little tank if you have the space. It doesn’t have to cost much and if you’re smart about it it can ever be free 👌
What should I name these two?

Okay with that last ask in mind, let me give my personal rundown on keeping crustaceans in community tanks:
Shrimp: Can work, provided that you don't keep with any other organisms big enough to eat them. There are a few exceptions - the genus Macrobrachium (Long Armed Shrimps) can often be terrors.
Hermit Crabs: The smaller species are usually good in fish only systems, unless you keep puffers, triggers, burrfish, Snowflake Eels, or other crustacean eaters. Keeping in reef systems is hit or miss as even smaller species can prey on your cnidarians. Blue Leggeds and Blue Cortez are often safe bets. Your biggest hermits of 6 or more inches across are unsuitable for keeping with fish or cnidarians.
Lobsters: Putting aside the "real" Lobsters which are just about unsuitable for keeping period, the Reef Lobsters are at best inconsistent. Smaller ones may work for you but a rule of thumb I've been told is not to trust any lobster above 4 inches. I think that's sound advice.
Crabs: The vast majority of Crabs are poor choices for keeping in community settings. Fiddlers are universally fine from a perspective of not hurting your fish, Thai Micro Crabs are fine too, and Pom Pom Crabs are usually safe. Minus a few other exceptions, I'd avoid them all.
Crayfish: Crayfish are heavily armored, armed to the teeth, and aggressive. I don't trust them with fish or plants or other inverts. One exception is the genus Cambarellus, which is small and usually safe with fish. But only small fish as they are very easy for mid-sized fish to eat.
Mantis Shrimp: separated into "smashers" or "spearers" on whether they specialize in hunting mollusks or fish, neither are safe in communities. They are opportunistic and I wouldn't keep with other tank life you are attached to (maybe aside from some Starfish species).

There are many types of crab species out there, you can find them near your house, in a pond, or in a seashore. But there are some unusual interesting crabs you may never heard of. Here we'll talk about 5 interesting crab species that blow your mind.
The hermit crab
The hermit crab is one of the most popular pet crab species. They are not true carbs but evolved into crab-like appearance and behavior that's why they are considered crabs. They do not have a hard exoskeleton to protect their vulnerable abdomen.  To protect their body from predators they use leftover shells of gastropods as they can't grow their ones.
For their colorful, cheerful appearance, crab enthusiasts love to keep in their crabitat.  There are two types of hermit crab you can find mainly with over 800 species.  One is marine hermit crabs that can live their whole life underwater and another is the land hermit crabs. An interesting fact is though they are crab land hermit crabs can't swim but they need water that's why they live near the seashore. Many species of hermit crabs are endangered as they are the victims of pet industry
Thai micro crab
Thai micro crab is a sea angel-like crab that looks hairy and silver-white with a 2.5 cm body. This crab is very rare to find in local shops even online because of their unavailability because they can only be found in Thailand where their name came from. This is one of the few crabs that can fully live in freshwater without contact with land.
Graceful decorator crab
The graceful decorator crab is not endangered but modernization affects their habitat and this crab is not popular as a pet. What makes it an interesting crab is their weird but funny behavior which is they like to place things they find near them into their back and the whole body. Basically, they decorate themselves with this stuff.
Anemone hermit crab
The anemone hermit crab is one of the interesting hermit crab species. Many of the crab marine hermit crab species have the ability to contact and convince sea anemones to place on their back. They do this to protect their vulnerable shells from predators in return the sea anemones get crap of the crabs' food and free traveling. The anemone hermit crab is one of them and this distinguish characteristic.
The soldier crab
The soldier crab scientifically known as Mictyris longicarpus can be found from the Bay of Bengal to Australia. They march forward with more than a hundred crabs during the falling tides like real soldiers that's why they are called soldier crabs.

NEW FEESH!
I got four Dwarf Mexican Crayfish (CPO) and six Thai Micro Crabs. The tiny crabs have fuzzy claws that they wave around to capture their food.
They’re all so cute and adorable! I’ll probably annoy everyone I know with pics of my tiny babies by the time this  week is done!

Honestly just grab the tank. If I learned anything in my years of living is just do it. If they judge you, they get a fun story. They don’t judge you, they forget about you. If they like your actions, they get a fun story.
Story time. At uni week one, I had zero food and I saw the food company was packing up all the extra food. And I was like imma ask for some food. So I was like can I have some of that food please. He was so sweet talked to me a bit, was flattered that I liked his food so much, told me he was from Canada through his thick French accent. Anyways I proudly walked to the train station with two hugely packed paper plates of food. Got on the train praying I don’t drop anything. And ate like a king for a few days. Other students told me they wished they did the same but they were to afraid to ask but the food guy told me he wished all the food could be eaten. Everyone wanted the same thing but no one took the first step. No one judged me which was my fear
Take the tank
yeah! solidarity! i took it, and i also got lights(? i think) a cool bag with some makeup stuff that ill never wear, a cutting board, some tongs, some tupperware lids (just the lids) and a bucket w a handle that will SUPER help with water changes
i dont have the balls u do for going up and talking to a person but yea im glad he was nice and gave u food. folks that work food service especially on a campus are always so nice and im glad i work adjacent to the kitchens cause the amount of times ive gotten free food for just being nice and asking about peoples days and families (which i do cause its nice not for the free food lmao) is extraordinary.
i still have to go out and steal that bucket tho. i dont technically have it cause it has stuff in it so i was waiting for night time lmao. wish me luck! x

here i am, thinking pancake is nibbling on the blanched lettuce from my garden that i put in the tank to bait out any snails, only to realize in the middle of filming this that she was actually just mauling the thai micro crabs that had also been lured out of hiding by the lettuce… at least she’s eating, i guess? little beast.

Submitted by @wingleader:
I have been doing some upgrades on my hermit crab setup recently.
Some crab backstory: A few years ago I discovered that my neighbors' 5yo had been given a hermit crab at some point. The poor thing was being kept in a critter keeper with none of the essential things crabs need. To help the poor thing out I built up a custom 10g tank with heating and lighting and lots of substrate to dig in, stocked it with shells, prepped the saltwater solution in a jug, bought another crab, and gave the whole kit as a birthday gift. The caveat was that if the kid didn't have an interest in taking care of them anymore, that I get the whole thing back. It lasted about 6 months and the crabs (including the original neglected one) were, indeed, returned to me.
Fast forward 3 years and they've been moved into a 20g tank.
Tumblr media
After learning about their need to be able to fully submerge in their water, I built a small ramped double tank for the salt and freshwater. It's even got grit siliconed onto the ramp for traction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The substrate is a mix of eco earth and sand that forms really nice tunnels. There is between 4 and 8 inches of depth for digging. They love it.
Tumblr media
The pothos is a nice addition and they don't seem interested in chewing on it, thankfully. There's moss, as well, but the jury is still out on that establishing because it tends to get tossed around.
I have an LED grow light for the plants that's on a timer. The lid is custom made with some spare wood, pvc, and hardware cloth I had. The hardware cloth side is wrapped in plastic because it was letting out too much humidity. I'll be revisiting this when I add on to the top.
Tumblr media
I have grand plans for this, namely to add some height with pvc so they can have more room to climb. More enrichment, in general. I also want to get another crab or two, but that's going to wait until the expansion. I need to pad out the shells a bit more, as well. The bigger crab is apparently very picky and only wants muffin shells. I have some on the way.
Tumblr media
I love invertebrates, especially hermit crabs. This is a nice little project that's manageable with my limited time and my kids love looking at the crabs. I've also got a 30g tall tank that I'm still messing with that has blue cherry shrimp and thai micro crabs in it. When it's more established and the plants have grown out I'll probably share that, as well. :)
Glad this little story has a happy ending for those crabs! I bet they’re really enjoying their upgraded home. You’ve done a great job with them thus far :) Thank you for sharing! And I would love to see your 30 gallon when it’s ready <3
