walking into your cooly aired apartment was such a difference after walking in the suffocating streets for a couple blocks.

were the streets that bad? usually no. in fact, you typically enjoy your late night walks coming back from work, the cars passing by you and the dimly lit street lamps was an ambience you appreciated.

tonight, there was no appreciation for anything.

with how draining school and work have been, the life inside you has slowly been sucking out. it was the time that your important exams came around so you’ve been spending any chance you had studying intensely. your job was only part time, but it felt like it took over your life sometimes. you’ve dealt with difficult customers before, but lately it feels like all the bad apples have encountered you.

safe to say, you’re stressed. you just wished everything would slow down. you wanted to keep up in your own life.

a sigh escapes from your lips as you put your bag down on the couch, not bothering to place it where it actually belonged. you untie your shoelaces with no force, feeling like if you did it would only make you even more tired. it’s not the latest, but you were beat. you just wanted your bed and a good night’s rest.

you walk up to your room to see your boyfriend sprawled out on the bed, scrolling endlessly on his phone. the sheets are at the edge of the mattress, waiting to be covered once you laid down.

yeonjun has his glasses on to block the blue light from his sight, a simple sweatsuit ensemble being his night attire. his phone in one hand, the other in between his legs which are crossed. eyebrows furrowed with a full pout on his lips from focusing on whatever’s on his screen, a lifelong habit of his. he hasn’t noticed you walked in, frankly your footsteps were too quiet for him to hear. all you did was drag them across the floor, yet it’s almost like they’re just as tired as you are. normally you’d take this opportunity to admire your boyfriend a bit more.

but you’re just too tired.

thankful that you wore some casual clothes today, no makeup, all you do is climb yourself onto the mattress, pulling the sheets to cover you both. no routine this time. you hated when you couldn’t do it, but you physically cannot tonight.

the sudden contact that is the bed shaking from your body brings yeonjun away from his phone, realizing that you’re home. a small smile forms on his lips when he sees you’re finally with him, but it’s soon replaced with a frown. you were facing away from him, resting on your side. your eyes begin to close as soon as you lay on that pillow, feeling the tears that were swelling up earlier begin to fall.

yeonjun knows. you haven’t said one word, but he knows.

it’s been like this for quite some time now. at first, he would assume that you were upset with him. he’d think of anything he did that could have possibly been wrong to you. the next day you’d be as bright as a star, so that quickly shut down his assumption. plus, you two were very open to conversation. if something was bothering you, you’d say it. no hesitation. even with how you’ve been feeling lately, you’d talk to him. you tell him how you hate how stressed you’ve been and he’d listen with so much love.

tonight there was none of that, you just wanted to not exist in this world.

yeonjun hums softly, understanding what the mood is. he shuts off his phone for the day and places it on the bedside table, turning off the lamp in the process. he takes off his glasses and clumsily tries to find its spot on the table until he does. he spends some time looking at your back facing him, emphasizing with your current emotions. he hates seeing you like this. he hates you feeling like this.

he switches onto his side the same way you are, only that he’s still facing your direction. he settles closer between you two so that he closes the distance and wraps his arms around your waist, resting his head only inches on top of yours. the size difference was so noticeable between you two.

yeonjun hesitates before he speaks. does he want to ask you how your day was? he can already assume how it went. does he want to ask if you’re okay? that’s an obvious answer. does he want to ask how you’re feeling? it’s going to be the same thing you’ve been telling him for weeks. so he settles with what you think you need right now.

“do you think dogs can understand what we tell them?”

you’re barely awake, feeling yeonjun’s jaw move along the pillows. you blink slowly, trying to comprehend the question. once you do understand that it’s exactly what he asked, you’re confused momentarily. until you get what he’s doing. you remain quiet.

“i mean, they have to right? when they get denied of treats, they get all wimpy. when we tell them they’re going on a walk, they get all excited. not even just our words, but our actions. it’s like they get it.”

yeonjun rambles as he traces shapes on your stomach with each word. you’re finding it hard to stay awake, but you want to see where he takes this.

“they seem to know when we’re happy, when we’re mad, when we’re sad. they fit their behavior to match whatever the mood is and it comforts us.” to be honest, yeonjun has no idea where he’s taking this either. at your state, with how attentive you are right now, you could almost believe anything and see it as legit.

“they’re just like humans if you think about it.”

you think about it for a moment and realize that he’s right. what he just said is exactly what he’s doing right now. fitting his behavior to match the mood. he knows you’re sad, and he’s doing his best to cheer you up without talking about your feelings.

you smile to yourself and let your sleepiness win this battle, finally knocking out. as if yeonjun knows you’re no longer awake, he grins while resting his head near yours, arms securing around your body tighter. not wanting to let you go.

he mumbles out an ‘i love you’ before he lets his sleep take over him as well, calling it a night. it’s not until the next morning when you really think about what he did, seeing how he ended your depressing night.

Fic AU : As You Are

ft. Falco x Gabi & Porco x Pieck

Falco x Gabi (Falbi)

Valentine's Day, according to Falco, is a day when people share their love for one another. Unfortunately for Gabi, she thinks it's just a day when people acts super weird & corny. According to Porco, horny *snorts*

But, it's also a day where there will be a special fair hosted in Liberio with many fun things to do, cool things to see and many delicious things to eat - like pizzas, burgers and ice-cream!

That year, Falco told Reiner that he'd like to ask Gabi out and take her to the fair, to which Reiner agrees to chaperone their little outing/'date'.

Falco woke up early that day and brought a paper flower that he made using the art of Origami, which Mikasa had helped him with the day before. According to Mikasa, paper flowers lasts forever but Gabi was too oblivious of the young boy's well-hidden message.

Reiner and Mikasa accompanied the children to the fair where they got on the carousel rides together. Reiner even bought the children balloon animals, popcorns and sweet treats like caramel apples and chocolate-dipped pretzels. They had a great time at the petting zoo, bobbing for apples and tagging along with Reiner and Mikasa into the Tunnel of Love boat ride.

Apart from sharing the same birthdate, Falco shares the same love for ice-cream with Mikasa. They both bonded over the shared enjoyment of that creamy, cold vanilla goodness.

Falco goes to the shooting range to win a giant soft plush for Gabi, but Gabi is too competitive to allow Falco to beat her at her forté - no scope shooting. They ended up having won four big ones instead.

Falco and Gabi, with Reiner's permission/supervision, got to stay outside after dinner time. They joined the adults for an open air classical romance movie screening for the first time ever in Liberio's town. They had a nice picnic mat spread out with some snacks and drinks until both the children fell asleep in the second half of the movie. Reiner ended up carrying Gabi home and Colt came by to bring Falco back with him.

Despite their continuous bickering, Falco and Gabi had an amazing time together. With Mikasa's help, Gabi bought a small falcon-shaped pin as a present for Falco which the boy really loves.

Porco x Pieck (PokkoPikku)

In the morning, Porco took Pieck to the bee farm and sunflower farm. Porco almost got stung because he forgot to close the visor of his bee suit much to Pieck's amusement. They both had a lot of fun diving in the sunflower beds.

Pieck wants to do something new and fun that year so after lunch, Porco took her to a vineyard in the outskirts of Liberio. They learnt how wines are made, Pieck even get to squash grapes in a giant tub and they got to do some wine tasting with cheese platters.

Porco took Pieck to the seaside later that evening to catch the sunset and enjoy the evening breeze together.

For dinner, Porco took Pieck to his favorite steakhouse where they shared a giant Meat Lover's platter.

They went to the military's watering hole where a Valentine's Dance night was hosted. They went dancing and had another round of drinks for a nightcap.

Reiner x Mikasa (ReiKasa)

Reiner volunteers to chaperone Falco and Gabi's outing, therefore he also saw that as an opportunity to take Mikasa out for a date and leisure in Liberio's town. He got speechless the first time he saw Mikasa in that beautiful light blue sundress. She doesn't wear jewellery but he thought she looked beautiful with a single blossoming frangipani slid in between her ears and that she smelt amazing.

They took the children on carousel rides and the Tunnel of Love rides. They snuck in quick kisses inside the dark tunnel when the children weren't looking. They don't hold hands in public but Reiner would always make sure he has a hand on the small of her back so he wouldn't be separated from her in public.

Reiner discovers that Mikasa enjoys ice-cream very much that he bought three different flavors for her in the morning, afternoon and dinner.

Reiner also learns that he and Mikasa both really enjoy trying new or rare cuisines.

When they catch the classic movie in the open air viewing under a sky full of stars, Reiner spent more time admiring Mikasa's face more than actually watching the movie itself. They held hands the whole night. He draped his long overcoat on her and Gabi to keep them both warm.

Mikasa loves the fresh clean smell that Reiner always has after he shaves and that day before they go to the fair, Reiner made sure he has a fresh trim with his razor. She showed her appreciation by rubbing the side of his jaw or leaning much closer to his face more often than usual on that day.

She loves sharing an ice-cream with him. She also noticed that they like to take a bite on the spot where the other's lips had been.

She enjoys accompanying the children on the rides and found herself laughing more than she's ever had in one day. She also secretly admires the way Reiner had been so naturally fun and loving with the children.

Both her and Reiner found themselves stammering and flushing so hard when other fair attendees mistaken Falco and Gabi as their children. Gabi accidentally calling Mikasa "mom" wasn't helping either. Reiner jokingly reassured her that it would be a good practice drill for the two of them.

She discovers that she and Reiner both love dark chocolates and fried street snacks.

It makes her weak in the knees everytime Reiner leant in to sneak her a swift kiss on the forehead in public. She also loves that smile on his face whenever he saw Falco and Gabi got into their competitive mode. He said it reminded him to when they were young cadets in Paradis and that he's always been proud to be the 'number 2' to her 'number 1'.

In the evening, she gave him a surprise gift: a custom kerchief that she had self-embroidered with a monogram of the letters R & M; the initials of their first names.

They ended that night just holding hands while gazing deep into each other's eyes until they fall asleep.

Suddenly she breathes in pain and takes the stick and throws it in the trash in front of the store. Kent isn't good at social relationships and he's well aware of that. A romantic relationship would just be asking for trouble, and probably not worth all the effort. But when it comes to his clever coworker Hera, he can't help but insert himself into her life every chance he gets. It's so illogical, more than 50% of relationships in people his age end in heartbreak, but where is this urge to hold her, protect her, and kiss her coming from? Why can't he treat her like everyone else?

It was official. Hera was having a bad day. Well, days, actually.

First, her power went off right in the middle of her favorite game Riddlemaster yesterday. She’d only been able to play half an hour more before her laptop had finally died, and she’d lamented for having to watch it on such a small screen the whole time.

Defeated, she’d turned in early. Not much else to do with the lights out.

Second, she’d been unable to sleep until 3am, unused to the pitch dark. She preferred to sleep with her night light on, and refused to be ashamed about that no matter how much Shin teased her about it.

Third, the power was still out when she left to go to work in the morning, and all the food she had to eat was in the fridge, which she couldn’t open unless she wanted everything in there to spoil.

Finally, only an hour into her shift at the cafe, she’d developed a nice sleep deprivation headache that throbbed painfully behind her eyes.

So she couldn’t help it if she was being a little less patient than usual.

“Hey Hera, could you load up a fresh batch of frozen strawberries? We just ran out.”

Hera looked up from the triple-order of parfaits she was making and eyed the three whole other mostly idle people that Mine could have asked instead of her. Frozen strawberries were heavy and as one would assume, frozen and would smart on her bare hands after just a few seconds of carrying the bag.

“I’m busy with an order right now.”

“Oh.” Mine looked extremely surprised, and Sawa who was working on sorting through tickets behind her wore a similarly shocked expression. Hera was usually quite polite with her speech. “Sorry.”

“Mm.” Hera didn’t think she sounded very sorry. Keeping her eyes down, she finished pouring the cream topping on the parfaits with a more aggressive squeeze than was necessary, and stalked off to go deliver them to the table before they began to melt.

Unfortunately for her, Ikki was ‘entertaining’ a customer at the bar which was right in her way to access the exit flap. Normally she’d just wait, but the parfaits were heavy, and if Waka noticed her serving half-melted ice cream she’d be the one to get berated later. And she really didn’t feel like listening to that.

“Excuse me.” She said shortly, looking pointedly at Ikki. “Coming through.”

His eyes widened and he hastily got out of the way. “Of course, my apologies for blocking your way…”

Hera didn’t respond, just briskly and carefully weaved around tables and customers to deliver her order.

Staring after her, Ikki made a short “huh” under his breath and then turned to the lady who was still giving him moony eyes as if nothing had even happened.

“Right - thank you for your kind words my lady, but actually we don’t accept those types of things here. If you have any additional questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to voice them. For now, I’m afraid I must return to the kitchen.”

“Aww… okay.”

Back in the kitchen, Shin was restocking the whipped cream and cinnamon while Kent stoically oversaw the cooking of what Ikki assumed was about to be one of their “Creamy Heart Gnocchi” plates. Mine was struggling to lift a large bag of frozen strawberries out of the freezer, although it was a matter of height rather than strength.

Ikki leaned against the doorway to avoid getting in the way.

“Seems like our cute little maid has her claws out today.” He stated probingly. He wanted to affirm that it wasn’t just him. While his eyes didn’t work on Hera, he fancied that his natural charm still worked on her just fine.

“If you’re -kya!- talking about Hera, then yeah, she’s like, totally bitchy today.” Mine grumbled, yelping as she finally succeeded at getting the bag down.

Kent made a displeased grunt of warning at the profanity.

“Grumpy, I mean. She scowled at me earlier when I asked her to get these for me!” Mine made a cute pouty face and demurred her posture to look pitiful.

“Restocking desert items is part of your responsibilities, not hers.” Kent corrected.

“Hpmh! Whatever. Let’s see how many customers she can please with that attitude.”

“Can you stop gossiping about dumb shit and get back to work.” Shin said, setting down a container of whipped cream a bit harder than necessary. As usual, he looked irritated.

Kent forwent correcting the profanity since he too wanted them to get back to work rather than conversing further.

Mine huffed and stalked out, forgetting to look like she was struggling to carry the heavy bag, holding it in one arm with ease. Ikki made an amused face and got the container of darjeeling that he had come in for originally and got to work brewing the tea.

Not that Hera had begun the day with much in the way of patience, but right now she was dangerously close to losing it completely. Just one more hour of torture and she could go home to what was hopefully an apartment fully restored with power.

There were no windows in Meido no Histuji, which contributed to it’s cozy den-like atmosphere which inspired customers to relax in the dim lighting of the cafe. It was probably good for business, but Hera would have liked to have some windows simply for the fact that maybe , she wouldn’t be dealing with a table of male customers who wanted more maidly services than she was willing to offer.

Since they probably wouldn’t feel so bold in the face of broad daylight.

Hera forced a polite smile and held the tray up higher so that it would block access to where her ample chest swelled her apron.

“Thank you for your kind words masters, but we don’t offer any of those kinds of services at this establishment.” She really should have been more cordial, but this was the wrong day for them to grope her. “It is stated quite clearly in our rules on the sign outside the cafe. Should you masters require some help to read it, I can gladly provide a chance to have my manager come personally reaffirm this.”

“You bitch, do you really think you’re in a position to make fun of us? Just provide us with proper service, it’s not that hard.”

“Right. Proper maids serve in silence with a smile.”

Were all teenage men this way? Horny, aggressive, and rude? Even her male coworkers were at least one of the three, considering Ikki’s womanizing, Shin’s rough speech and actions, and Kent’s cold and inconsiderate tendencies. At least Toma didn’t act that way, but he was like an annoying helicopter parent that liked to boss her around, which she appreciated even less.

Clicking the pen off, Hera decided to go get Waka instead of continue trying to take their order.

“Sir?”

“What is it, Hera?”

“Customers at table three just groped me under the pretense of trying to check I was taking their order right sir.” Hera would usually sugarcoat the situation but right now she didn’t feel like it. “I told them we don’t provide those services but they obviously aren’t taking no for an answer. I figured it would be best for you to decide how to handle the situation. And if you don’t mind sir, I’d like to take my break now.”

Waka’s eyebrows skyrocketed at her tone - a far cry from her usual sweet gentle voice. Though with the situation at hand he didn’t blame her.

“I see. Permission granted. I’ll handle the situation, thank you for notifying me.” He pulled up his gloves and pushed up his glasses and made for table three, a dark aura following him.

Back in the break room, Hera was slumped on the couch, eating the apple and peanut butter sandwich she’d cobbled together this morning like it was a feast, lamenting the lack of the bento locked in the forbidden depths of her fridge.

She was hungry enough not to care though, and when she finished she laid all the way down on the couch and pressed her hands against her eyes, wishing her headache would just go away already. Her boob was also kinda sore where the guy had jabbed it in his attempt to get a handful.

When she heard the sound of the break room door click and open, she didn’t even bother to move.

“Hera.” Great. That sounded like Kent.

“What?” She didn’t bother to sit up. “I’m on break.”

That was when the smell of food - some kind of cheesy pasta, she guessed - hit her nose. It was so good that she couldn’t bring herself to be ashamed of how she instantly started salivating.

She peeped through her hands. It looked just as delicious as the man holding it. Not that she’d ever had a chance to taste him. Now that was a dangerous train of thought, especially since her crush on him was clearly unrequited. It was pretty clear Kent wasn’t interested in dating, so she’d kind of given up on trying and resigned herself to admire him on her own.

“I noticed you were moving twenty percent more slowly than normal and look at the food you were serving 5 times more than usual. This has led me to believe that you may be hungry, so I brought this for you. Before you ask, yes, Waka has permitted it.” Kent said, setting the plate down on the break table, along with a fork, napkin, and bottle of water.

Hera took her hands off her eyes and raised her eyebrows.

“Wow really? Thanks.” She sat up and took the plate forking a large bite. Letting out a low groan at the rich taste, she wasted no time shoveling fork to mouth.

Kent was watching her with his usual impassive look.

“Maybe it’s just because I’m hungry, but right now this feels like the best thing I’ve ever tasted. Or maybe you’re just a genius in the kitchen.”

“Well actually-”

“Ahh! Stop stop!” She covered her ears and glared at him. “I just said don’t tell me, don’t be mean.”

Kent did something then that she swore she never would have believed if she hadn’t experienced it for herself.

He smiled at her.

It didn’t last long though, because all too soon his expression returned to neutral and he held out the water bottle insistently.

“I need to get back to the kitchen. Make sure to drink it all or else you will get dehydrated from the sodium in the mozarella.”

Hera was left holding the bottle numbly, watching the door close after the tall young man. Slowly unscrewing the top, she placed the lip against her mouth and took a sip.

Blissfully wrapped up in a cozy green blanket, Hera was sipping on a box of pineapple juice from the comfort of her sofa, her laptop balanced on her lap.

Work was over, her headache was gone thanks to the power nap she’d taken when she got home, and she was well fed. Twenty minutes later and several videos and wiki pages about rabbit production later, and all she really knew was that rabbits were horny and she was thoroughly stumped. None of the articles had even mentioned anything about numbers or math.

Hera bit her lip. She was so close to getting her Summer Festival outfit… and her pride refused to allow her to cheat. But the outfit was a limited time item that would be removed from the store during maintenance on the 15th of August. That was a little over a week from now, but she didn’t have all the time in the world.

Time for her last resort. The oldest one in the book, phone a friend! Well, text actually. Opening up her cell, she typed out a message to Sawa.

Using the preview function, she removed the usual outfit her character wore (a greek style ‘goddess’ outfit she thought would suit it, since her ign was GoddessHera) and applied the Summer Festival outfit and began playing around with the colors of the trim and embroidery.

It was good motivation.

Her phone beeped from beside her and she sat up to retrieve it.

What is "RGBIC"?

The Govee Lyra uses RGBIC technology, which is another term for Neopixels, or pixel LEDs. The "RGB" part refers to the LEDs being capable of color mixing with a full gamut of Red, Green, and Blue. "IC" is short for Integrated Circuit, referencing the fact that each LED has its own control circuit, hence each can display a different color.

Most RGB strips you'll find for sale can display only a single color at the same time. The Govee Lyra (and other Govee RGBIC products) can display multiple colors simultaneously, resulting in gorgeous rainbows and aurora patterns.

The Lyra arrives in a relatively compact box, which of course means there's a fair bit of construction before you can start using the lamp. Inside the box you'll find:

Fixing it all together is quite an involved process, but took me no longer than half an hour, and a screwdriver is included. However, you should follow the instructions closely, as one of the aluminum profile sections is not like the others, and has a different set of screw holes to attach to the base. Once the main tower has been constructed, you should plug in the LED strip, then carefully squeeze it into the profiling.

The optional remote holder snaps onto the Lyra in any position you choose. The remote control itself is magnetic at the rear, so it can be attached and pulled off easily. It's optional though, so feel free to not use it if you feel it ruins the overall aesthetic.

Design

The Govee Lyra stands at 58-inches (147cm), though the LED strip is only 47-inches (120cm) of that. To ensure it stands upright, you'll find a heavy but slimline base, with the footprint of the Lyra only a 6-inch diameter, meaning it should fit neatly beside any bulky furniture.

That said, I'm not a fan of the white plastic around the base, and would have preferred a wider, flatter, brushed aluminum look to match the profiling sections. It also seems like a wasted opportunity that the power brick and electronics are not built into the base.

Ultimately these are small complaints when the base and cable are likely to be hidden behind some furniture, but it does mean you may not want to put the Lyra in an empty corner of the living room. At 58-inches tall, I also found myself wanting a small table to put it on, rather than the actual floor. It feels just ever so slightly too short, and just one extra section would have made all the difference. To me, a floor lamp should stand about as tall as I am, or a little less.

The Govee Lyra looks best when placed about a foot back from and facing a wall, allowing a wide area of light to be reflected back.

Of course, if you'd rather the harsher look of the striplight itself, there's no reason you can't do that, but you'll get a much less impressive reflection.

Controlling the Govee Lyra

There's a number of ways you can interact with and control the Lyra:

Thankfully, getting set up with the Govee Home app is easy, and I was able to reliably add the device within minutes. Operating over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, just choose the Lyra from the indoor lighting tab, provide your network access details, and name the device. The device will automatically use Bluetooth if you're within range, but otherwise, it all works fine over Wi-Fi.

The app is relatively easy to use to select premade scenes or more music reactive modes, but creating your own custom animations can get more complex thanks to confusing color options. Having trouble deciding on some colors to use? The "Recommended color schemes" sounds like it would be an easy to choose list, but instead requires you to select no less than an initial style, a basic color, a scene, and a color matching method; none of which are really explained.

The "Effects Lab", which features at the top of the list, is particularly bizarre. In short, there's an awful lot of choice in the app, and the basics are easy to get a hang of, but there's just too much complexity when it comes to customization. Govee could do with taking a leaf out of the Nanoleaf playbook when it comes to custom scene creation and community sharing.

The last option is to use either Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. Apple HomeKit and Siri are not supported. The voice assistant control is also limited to power, brightness, and color; you can't select multicolor scenes or music reactive modes.

In my testing, I found the remote control and app to be the most useful. Despite not being able to export animated scenes to the remote control or voice assistants, the Lyra does remember the last scene used, so you can at least resume your favorite (assuming you don't turn it off at the plug). The lack of HomeKit support might be a dealbreaker for you though.

Which Smart Lighting to Choose?

Govee is our favorite when it comes to great value smart lighting, but it's not the only option. Let's take a look at some other ecosystems to compare.

The Govee and Hue smart lighting ecosystems crossover in many places, yet differ immensely. Both sell smart color bulbs, LED strips, and standalone lighting fixtures. The Hue system requires its own smart hub, creating a separate Zigbee mesh network. This has the benefit of not cluttering up your Wi-Fi if you have lots of fixtures, and means you can install lighting in places your Wi-Fi might not be able to reach. On the other hand, it's a high added cost if you only have a few smart lights, and modern Wi-Fi routers should easily handle some smart lighting. On top of that, Zigbee transmits over the 2.4Ghz spectrum, the same as 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi. S you (or your neighbors) may find your Wi-Fi experience suffers.

Govee smart products use either Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. If you have good Wi-Fi coverage and a modern router, you should have no problem. Though rarely used outside of initial setup, Bluetooth is a welcome addition for me. If I'm running a small event somewhere, such as a haunted house, I can pick up some Govee LED strips and set them up as effect lighting or a custom music reactive mode using only my smartphone, without needing to worry about programming in new Wi-Fi access details.

Govee vs Nanoleaf

Although the Nanoleaf smart lighting panels are a vastly different product (more akin to wall art installations), they are generally going to be considered for the same purpose as the Lyra: lighting up a wall or corner of your home.

Both Nanoleaf Panels and Govee Lyra share a lot of similarities:

Capable of displaying more than one color simultaneously

Offer music reactive modes

Offer dynamic scenes, such as a rainbow or aurora

Have physical control buttons, either on a remote or on the device itself

So where do they differ? Nanoleaf panels are infinitely more customizable, and expandable. The app even helps you to design a shape to place them on your wall. Nanoleaf panels are also compatible with Apple HomeKit, and voice assistant integration is generally more developed, with individual scenes exported.

Of course, Nanoleaf panels are more expensive: two to three times as much as the Govee Lyra for a basic 9-panel music reactive starter kit. In my experience, the Wi-Fi control is lot less reliable too, and I frequently have to do a hard reset to get them responsive again.

Should You Buy the Govee Lyra?

If you want a stylish, minimalistic floor lamp, capable of stunning multicolor dynamic and music reactive displays, along with plenty of customizable options and app control, the Govee Lyra is well worth a look. It's certainly the fanciest floor lamp we've ever seen, perfect for everything from impromptu living room raves to subdued romantic nights in.

It'll blend into the background when not in use, and take center-stage when needed. It's gorgeous, customizable, and has a physical remote control. You'll need the app for the more exciting scenes though, and voice assistant integration is limited.

But while we think the Lyra is a great-looking smart floor lamp, it's let down only by the fact that other Govee products offer even better value. Much of the cost goes on the aluminum profiling, and there's only 47-inches worth of actual LEDs for the RRP of $150. For the same price, you could buy almost 100ft of Govee RGBIC LED strips, which would have the exact same features, and produce enough light to blind you. Clearly, a big chunk of the price is on the presentation—metal isn't cheap. If you just want some smart effect lighting, and don't mind sticking the LED strips to an existing bit of furniture, then some basic LED strips are a better choice.
