I am bad about sending thank you cards. Here’s a first step toward being better. Italic and a little floral design using a mix of watercolor and bister inks inside a letterpress card that I’m pretty sure is made with the blush cover weight stock from the paper source. Volunteer Spotlight: Karyn Witt

Karyn Witt is on a mission to one day end the widespread disease that has plagued several members of her family: Alzheimer’s.  

As a dedicated Walk to End Alzheimer’s volunteer in Michigan City, Ind., Karyn loves sharing information with others about the deleterious disease. Not only does she enjoy gathering information on the illness in order to help raise awareness, but through her involvement with the local library, she’s able to further foster mindfulness of the terrible disease, as she has countless resources at her fingertips.

Her journey began more than 40 years ago when her maternal grandmother, Eleanor, slowly began to lose her memory. For more than 16 years, Karyn saw Eleanor fight the good fight before eventually succumbing to the disease. Through her battle, Karyn recognized the toll Alzheimer’s took on a person and their family and realized just how truly terrible the disease was.

Karyn came face-to-face yet again with the disease when her Aunt Bonnie, Eleanor’s daughter, passed away from Alzheimer’s at age 60, and again, when her mother, Judie, was diagnosed with the disease a few years later.

“Before my mom was officially diagnosed, it started with the little things. She’d ask if she had sent a birthday card to my son and I’d say, ‘yeah mom.’ The one day, it got worse and we knew something wasn’t right, so we started the whole process with her,” Karyn said.

With the diagnosis of three close relatives, it came as no surprise to others when Karyn became involved with the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter. She joyfully accepted when her boss asked her to take over Alzheimer’s programming at work alongside a colleague. As a friendship quickly blossomed between the two coworkers, Karyn was asked to get involved with the Michigan City Walk to End Alzheimer’s, too.

More than three years later, Karyn is still fearlessly leading the Walk to End Alzheimer’s committee as committee chairperson. Each year, she dedicates her time and resources to the planning, promotion and execution of the event – helping to lead the Walk in raising thousands for the Association.

Karyn’s dedication to the disease doesn’t end there, though. As the mission committee chairperson at her church, Karyn has witnessed several members of the congregation pass away from Alzheimer’s and decided to get a team together for the annual walk. This year, Karyn was able to help form the “Walking Warriors” at her church and encourage countless individuals to sign up.

Through Karyn’s dedication to her family, Alzheimer’s disease and the Association, she’s been able to assist with crucial fundraising efforts, encourage others to get involved and spread awareness of the incurable disease to many. Her efforts don’t go unnoticed, and volunteers like her are the reason Walk to End Alzheimer’s is widely supported and participated in year after year.
