Interview with Eliza Rose Schneider

To many, the subject of the 50s is very irrelevant and might be a yawn factor. But that's not the case in this interview. This interview includes steps on how to make yourself look and feel put together in the morning and who doesn't want to look neat and put together before starting their day. Back in the 1950s, it was rare to see someone in the shops or even grocery shopping who looks like they woke up and straight then and their left their houses without spending some time in front of the mirror. Nowadays it has been very common not many people spend some time in the morning to get ready. If someone left the house with a dress a decorative amount of jewelry and a put together face it is usually uncanny and unusual. People think leaving the house as I’ve stated above is how you're supposed to dress to important events, weddings and events such as that nothing more. I have interviewed a vintage enthusiast via Instagram message. Her name is Eliza Rose Schneider from Florida. Her Instagram account includes a broad range of outfits worn by her that she styles herself using the vintage style. She also posts similar outfits to old Hollywood starlets such as Lucille Ball and models from 50s magazines. Unfortunately, I was unable to meet her face to face and ask Eliza questions personally but thanks to technology I was able to email her the questions and receive emails back with the answers.

The Interviewer: Is it true that back in the 50s it was rare and look down on when someone didn't look put together?

Eliza: During the 1950s, and arguably until the mid-1970s, one’s appearance was an indicator of one’s social standing. An un-kept appearance could lead people to believe that one’s home and family were also un-kept. Even those who were not in the higher economic classes did their best to maintain an appearance that did not mirror their financial situation. There was pride in a polished wardrobe, and “casual wear,” though it certainly existed, was only acceptable for the confines of one’s home.

The Interviewer: What aspects made you like the 50s?

Eliza: When I first began collecting vintage clothing, I was insatiably drawn to the classic simplicity of the 1950s. With just a few items from the 1950s in your daily wardrobe, one can have a versatile, pulled-together look. Circle skirts and boat neck blouses, cigarette pants with sweaters and ballet flats, a simple, tailored dress and heels, all indicative of the style of the 1950s. After the fabric shortages and clothing rationing of World War II ceased, designers began creating pieces that would have been seen as extravagant even shameful during wartime. They met the new decade with a new shape, made famous by Christian Dior, and women found a freedom in their wardrobes that had not existed during (and shortly after) the war. This mix of styles left over from wartime and modern haute couture styles created a revolutionary look that still has influence in the fashion world today.

The Interviewer: How long did it take you to feel comfortable and find your own mark in old Hollywood ways of dressing and acting?

Eliza: I have always had a love for classic, glamorous styles, but only in the last two or three years have I put aside any uncomfortable or self-conscious feelings towards my clothing choices. At the start, I would wear vintage only for special occasions, saving my nicest dresses for weddings or formal dinner dates, but over the years I have found that 1950s “casual wear” fits perfectly into my daily life, and daily wardrobe. I no longer bat an eye at wearing a 1950s sundress to the grocery store or a 1950s bathing suit to the beach. I have found comfort in vintage beauty rituals – setting my hair and choosing just the right shade of lipstick for the particular outfit I am wearing that day – and find the “modern” section of my closet growing smaller by the season.

The Interviewer: Do you think vintage styles can be modernized?

Eliza: I think that vintage styles can be modernized, but they lose some of their authenticity. For people who simply love the look of vintage clothes without wanting the hassle of maintaining a vintage wardrobe or composing an historically accurate outfit, there are many ways to “fake” vintage style with modern clothing.

The Interviewer: In what way do you think an old Hollywood enthusiast can adapt their vintage way of living to day to day modern life without disregarding the development of this century?

Eliza: I believe that like most things in life, moderation is key. I am an avid hiker and willingly swap my vintage clothes for hiking boots and spandex shorts whenever I am given the chance - but it is not surprising to see me also wearing red lipstick. I do not style my hair every day or wear historically accurate undergarments whenever I wear my vintage clothing. There is nothing wrong with saving your vintage clothes for special occasions or only wearing them when you feel like it. Maintaining a vintage wardrobe is time consuming, and certainly isn’t for everyone. But for people who want the vintage style without the hassle of mending and caring for true vintage pieces, there are many reproduction clothing brands that offer vintage styles in more forgiving fabrics and tailoring for all shapes and sizes. There is no need to sacrifice any of the luxuries of modern living just for a vintage wardrobe!

The Interviewer: How were you able to adapt your 50s style to your life?

Eliza: I believe, in a way, once I found my style and began dressing how I always wanted to dress, my life adapted to my style, instead of the other way around. This is not to say that I never wear leggings or choose to wear jeans instead of a vintage dress, but I have found that my way of dressing has brought vintage clothing and the study of historical fashion into the forefront of my life. I currently work part time at a vintage clothing store, and find myself discussing vintage style every single day.

The Interviewer: What are the steps and process of how to leave the house put together either in 50s style or even a modern style?

Eliza: I find that having a selection of clothing that you love is the most important aspect of dressing. Don’t believe that you must have a full wardrobe – a small, curated wardrobe will leave you with no bad choices. Now, when it comes to vintage clothing, finding you favorite decade is the first step! I have found that the late 1940s and early 1950s contain some of my favorite styles, and I have a large collection of clothing from this period. I do have clothing from the 1930s and from the late 1950s, but my most-worn pieces are from that particular era. Once you have found your decade, it is important to find clothes that fit well. Vintage sizing and modern sizing are vastly different, so throw away everything you think you know about the size of clothes. If something is too long, but fits everywhere else, hem it yourself or find someone who can. If something is slightly too tight, don’t assume that it will stretch over time or become more comfortable – most vintage fabrics have very little stretch in them. Once you have a few basic pieces in your wardrobe – two or three day dresses, a nice pair of high-waisted pants, some classic ballet flats or heels – you can begin to branch out and find your unique style. I tend to plan my outfits out the night before, thinking first of what particular era I want to choose from, and then building an outfit from one or two basic pieces. It is more than possible to select a good vintage dress, a nice pair of shoes, and look polished and put-together with very little effort. Quality over quantity is key.

Eliza has answered in great detail of the history behind the clothing and what you can consider wearing to look put together. She talks about modern time and how you can combine 1950s fashion with it. Depending on your look it might only take you five minutes in front of your vanity, you can also customize your process and look for the time that best suits you. The best thing about waking up in the morning and getting ready with either a long or short process is that you probably will feel instantly better about your day and you may also feel confident. Just remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder, don't be afraid to explore your unique vision of fashion or even your own twist to the 50s.

Senior Thesis Proposal

1. Theme

The theme of this senior thesis proposal is ‘resistance’. The word resistance by definition means, the refusal to accept or comply with something; the attempt to prevent something by action or argument. In September 2018, I started the Resistance Campaign to bring awareness to sexual assault not only on this campus but to also bring awareness to the issue and how it is overlooked in the black community. I would like to further my campaign and continue that theme in my senior capsule. This capsule is a continuation from the previous semester which was initially modeled after an incident that happened to me in Bowie, MD. The collection is crafted as a representation of my different types of style which ranges from trendy business casual to an edgy femme. The collection will feature an avant-garde and feminine flair to the average pantsuit, dress, jumpsuit or blazer. This collection features fun and bold colors, symbolizing and embodying confident women wearing the clothes underneath. Lace, linen and cotton blends will all be incorporated within the capsule, with embellishments of pearls, colorful zippers and of course, the word “resistance”.

2. Research

Over the course of the past few years, I have been growing my brand but also expending my knowledge on activism, socialism and how to become more involved in the community. Since being in college I have grown to have a stronger voice as an artist which has transpired in my artwork as time has passed. Initially, I was very fond of artists such as Kara Walker who illustrates images of rape, racial injustice, the disadvantages of the black community and a variety of other topics. Her work was so influential and so politically and emotionally charged that it was beautiful work to see. Another influential person is Kerby Jean-Raymond who uses his clothing designs to promote advocacy. Even though his social media and runway pieces, he addresses topics such as police brutality and injustices in the black community. Artists with a free voice such as theirs have drawn me to read and educate myself more on artists and authors who were just as influential. Currently, I am reading a book called Pussy by Regena Thomashauer which talks about the inner power a woman has and how beloved a woman should truly be, not only from her counterparts but to herself. It is extremely rewarding to read a book such as this because it talks about how a women’s power and uniqueness get overlooked an underappreciated in our society. A new study posted on September 16, 2019, by CNN stated that 1 in 16 US women was raped for their first sexual experience, and yet rape is still treated as if it’s a minute subject worldwide. Expressing advocacy and awareness through different art forms is needed and I want to do my best to convey this message through my work.

3. Concept

The mission of The Resistance of Bowie State University is to be a liaison for Bowie State students and administration as an advocate for sexual awareness and safety. This campaign strives to bring social recognition about sexual assault to the student body, faculty, and administration to better security and knowledge on its campus for all genders, sexualities, and diverse backgrounds. The Resistance provides a safe haven for social interaction, activism, and acknowledgment through education, awareness, and advocacy. By using different art forms and creating clothes that illustrate freewill and advocacy, a larger and more effective message will be shown that influences a community to take accountability for their actions in an interactive and informative way. By exposing more people to activism art and fashion, it can provoke feelings within the audience to influence them to further change their actions or mindset on a worldwide issue.

For this collection, the target market consists of women who know what they want and know what is right from wrong. This collection is targeted towards women aged twenty-one to forty years of age. The Resistance represents a woman with a voice whether vocal or not, is always ready to express what she is feeling through the clothing she wears. She enjoys feeling unique and understands that confidence is a major aspect of her femininity. Being herself is her first choice always and will always be true to herself. She is a goal-oriented woman and will stand up to any task when she is needed. She strives for the betterment of others, as well as herself, by promoting well-being for all. Her attention to detail and passion for everything from her education and career to her art and community make her strive for more every day. Her annual income is $60,000 – $80,000 a year, with her educational status being some sort of college degree or higher. Her ethnicity is a broad spectrum ranging from African American, Middle Eastern or Caribbean, to Hispanic, Asian or Caucasian. She enjoys volunteering and reading in her free time to better her community and learn more about activism. Her marital status ranges from single to married, and she is comfortable with being independent if she chooses. She is an all-around dynamic woman who chooses her happiness and her freedom of expression over anything else.

4. Plan

After properly sketching and having the outfit ideas for the collection, I would need to decide which pieces from the line I would use as interactive pieces of clothing. These pieces would include shirts that speak if a person’s heart races or clothing that would change color. Because I want the underlying message of this campaign to be informative, placing programming software within the articles of clothing would be accounted for. I would also like this to rent out a venue in Washington DC to display all aspects of the campaign. Showcasing the different art mediums will not be able to be displayed in the student gallery and by hosting an event off-campus I can reach a different audience of people to better promote myself and the clothes. For the off-campus event, I would love to have a casting call to recruit models. The main issue with that is model cost, and properly sizing the models. If I cannot get the correct models, I will have a showcase at a select venue in Washington DC. For the senior showcase on campus, I can recruit people on campus in the following VCDMA majors (such as graphic designers, animators and music tech) to help with my promotion and set up. For both on-campus and off-campus events, I would need to talk to different coordinators and people in charge of different venues to discuss ticket pricing, opening night plans, spacing options and other amenities for a perfect show.

5. Budget

I would like my clothes to be made with nicer materials so fabrics would cost between $500-800 for the entire collection. I would like my collection to be hosted at Culture Coffee Too in Northeast Washington, DC which would also cost about $150 an hour (and would be rented out for a three-hour period). The LilyPad Arduino or other technology I would be using in the clothing can easily be obtained because of the VCDMA department. I have an adjustable mannequin at home, but otherwise, I would probably have to pay another fee for mannequins used at an off-campus venue as well. Promotion such as business cards, and flyers would not cost as much.

6. Create

Initially, everything would be made by me using simple sewing machines and fabrics. I currently am starting my collection for my senior thesis to potentially grow and partner with other well-known companies. This will take place between October 2019 and December 2019 to hopefully be taken public by March 2020. Since I would like to later make this into a profitable business, I would continue to promote my work through social media and create a website committed to the movement. If the demand for my brand increases to a point where doing everything myself is too chaotic, I will then either formulate a team to assist in creating my product or get in contact with manufacturers that can efficiently handle the work while still maintaining profitability. If I do take the approach of making an agreement with a manufacturer, I expect them to withhold the same level of quality that fits my company’s standards in order match my more reasonable prices due to the quality of the clothing being provided at an estimated price of $75-300 an item. Currently, I have the entire collection sketched out properly with colors, fabrics, and inspiration. The mood board for the collection is completed as well, along with a blog of inspiration pictures that is featured on Tumblr. Everything is regularly updated to show my progression on how I want this collection to flourish.

7. Promote

People use social media for many aspects from sharing moments with friends to funny memes and other cultural aspects, and also to announce and promote events. I plan to create multiple different versions of flyers for my event(s) in order to post on both my personal and campaign-focused Instagram page. This is an easy and free way to get people to notice what is happening in the area. Advocating Bowie Students on campus through local means such as face to face also helps with gaining the desired exposure. By the time we have reached promotions, I will have ideally made stronger connections on different levels in order to help promote my events in both social media and local interactions. Also, brochures and posters are two visual ways of getting people to come where graphic designers can also be beneficial. I also understand that people continuously use Facebook as well as Twitter which will advertise to a wider audience of different age ranges. It would significantly increase the number of people who see the event flyers I am posting as well as making sure that more people at least see the information. Even if they do not attend the event, from continuously seeing the brand's information you can become familiar with the work and content created.

As far as weight goes, this clocks in at only 11 ounces and is easily packable, and yet it’s incredibly durable considering its light-weight.

My main criticism is just that the synthetic insulation is slightly less breathable than other newer materials out there. But the high warmth it provides is a reasonable trade-off for the moderately lower breathability.

It fits quite slim so we recommend getting one size larger than normal if you plan on combining it with other layers. The hoody comes with a reasonably hefty price tag but is worth just about every dollar. Overall, Arc’teryx’s Atom LT Hoody (also available in women’s) provides a great mix of mobility, warmth, comfort and style and, based on the extensive research put into this article, is the Best Overall Midlayer for 2019.

2. Columbia Steens Mountain Full Zip Fleece

Anyone looking for an inexpensive and classic looking fleece that will give you a decent amount of protection from the elements should definitely check out Columbia’s Steens Mountain Full Zip Fleece. It is without a doubt the cheapest midlayer on our list, but still packs a punch, and we easily consider it to be the Best Budget Midlayer of 2019. Soft, comfortable, and perfect to throw on after a day out skiing, snow-boarding or doing any other fun, and cold, outdoor activity!

In terms of technicality and extra features, saying “you get what you pay for” is certainly relevant here. As a low-budget layer, the Steens Mountain Full Zip isn’t packed with extra features like other, more expensive options. That said, for its price, it’s a very solid “no-frills” layer that will do the job of keeping you warm.

I think this layer is best suited as a sweater to wear inside rather than as a go-to layer for outdoors activities. Those of you who are therefore looking for something more technical/guaranteed to keep you warm on a really cold day outdoors should probably consider splurging a bit more cash on one of the other more substantial layers we have coming up. Nevertheless, this is still the best midlayer for not breaking the bank!

Arc’teryx uses nothing but premium materials, including lightweight but durable zippers for both the main zip and the two hand zips. It also features an easily-adjustable StormHood and a combination of insulation types (down and synthetic, depending on location on the jacket). These work with the jacket’s clean-line construction and design, lack of loose threads and well-kept 850-fill-power white goose down stuffing to make this item the best midlayer down jacket.

Amazingly light, remarkably warm and tastefully elegant, this jacket is an impressive piece of construction that will keep you warm on any but the absolute coldest or wettest days. Arc’teryx knows that the downfall of most down jackets is their low ability to withstand moisture, and has responded to that with this gem. Goose-down is used in the areas where insulation is most important (torso and core), while synthetic insulation that stands up better to moisture is used in the areas most likely to collect moisture (underarms, sleeves and along the shoulders).

The whole jacket appears seamless though and overall provides an extremely efficient combination of warmth, water-resistance, packability and elegance. With its price tag at $349 it is perhaps a bit steep to use purely as a midlayer, although relative to other down jackets on the market it is not an obscene price. For anyone seeking a higher-end midlayer that provides versatility for use as a stand-alone down jacket as well as as a very warm midlayer, the Arc’teryx Cerium LT Hoody has you covered. There’s a woman’s version as well!

4. Patagonia R2 Fleece Jacket

Patagonia is the ‘go-to’ for many outdoor enthusiasts out there, and with very good reason. They are world-renowned for their high quality, extremely solid gear designed by adventurers for adventurers, and their R-series jackets (of which there are three models, R1, R2 & R3) are no exceptions. But it’s the R2 that has caught my eye, and is the best midlayer for cold weather in my opinion.

The most noticeable difference between the R2 Fleece jacket and its peers is its lack of a hood – anyone looking specifically for a hooded midlayer should stop right now and jump to other products on the list! The R2 model combines two of Patagonia’s fleece types – their warmest on the chest/core area and a lighter style under the arms and along the sides. This has created a well-balanced sense of warmth while preventing you from totally overheating if using this jacket for cardio-intense activities. It’s available in women’s too.

While more expensive than other items on our list, the R2 fleece is still very reasonable compared to other Patagonia products and well priced considering its high quality and breathability. Of course, as with all fleeces, its ability to stand up to strong wind is not the best. Nor is it warm enough to also be used as an outer layer on milder days, as is the case with others on our list.

It is, however, described by many as the “ultimate athletic fleece” due to its straight-forward design, warmth, and breathability that is extremely well-suited for people on the move. For those among you who agree that fleece is the best type of midlayer, and are happy to use a midlayer without a hood, Patagonia’s R2 Fleece jacket is a solid contender.

While the differences between Patagonia’s R2 Fleece Jacket described above and the R1 might seem slight, they do result in significantly different products. Perhaps most importantly, we should note that while the R2 jacket features Patagonia’s warmest fleece, the R1 (available in women’s) uses a lighter version that makes it much more of a classic midlayer than a jacket.

Lighter and more of a snug, slim-fit than the R2, the R1 is a layer that you would likely put on before a day of adventuring and not need to take off at any point. Its recycled and recyclable polyester makes it a layer with wonderful wicking-abilities, breathability, and warmth. This furthermore makes it versatile enough to be used both as a lightweight insulator or as a thermal base layer.

The clean-cut fit is true to its description as “athletic”, meaning no added bulk but, instead, a good design that hugs your body when you’re still and stretches when you’re moving for country skiing, climbing, hiking or more! The R1 stands up very well for cardio-intense activities where you want a product that provides warmth combined with extreme breathability. This fleece comes in women’s and a men’s models, both of which have a hood, deep side pockets, a snap-chest pocket, and come in various colors. All of these offer ultimate style and comfort for those looking for the best midlayer on the market!

Despite my inclination to suggest it more for casual wear than for high-tech needs, it is extremely warm and stands up well to the elements. This weather resistance is courtesy of the wind and water resistant polyester shell along with a scuba-style hood. What’s more, this midlayer is true to size, stylish, soft, warm without being too bulky and flexible enough to allow for more layers both under and over it if needed. I feel confident saying that the Cotopaxi Cubre Full-Zip Fleece Jacket merits the title of best midlayer jacket.

My only wish is that it packed down a little smaller to make it more portable. In the long run, however, the long list of benefits far outweighs this little gripe.

Cotopaxi became known in the outdoor gear world for its unique Del Día packs that were always “crafted with purpose and passion.” Lucky for midlayer shoppers out there, Cotopaxi has since branched out into clothing design. Its Polartec Power Stretch underarm panels allow for excellent arm mobility and no part of the jacket feels constricting. The whole thing also weighs only 13 ounces so you hardly even notice that you’re wearing it! Although this jacket doesn’t have a hood, it has a wonderful high collar that protects your neck from the elements and allows it to easily fit under a ski-shell.

For weather resistance, this midlayer features a 20D nylon shell treated with a DWR finish for standing up well to light moisture. It can’t, however, withstand much rain and definitely needs to be combined with a waterproof shell if there’s any chance of actual precipitation. This said, it is extremely breathable and a good layer to sweat in without discomfort.

Its interior zippered chest pocket provides a great place to hide your valuables while out on the slopes. The zippered hand pockets furthermore guarantee essential warmth for your extremities. On the Cotopaxi website, this jacket is described as “doing a little bit of everything” and this really is the case. With a men’s and a women’s version, both of which are a shell and insulating layer in one, the Pacaya is without a doubt the best midlayer for Skiing!
