So here's some picks of mine.

Nanoha (Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha) I was 18 at the time and this character and series would touch my heart forever and reminded me how sometimes it's not about saving the world, it's about saving one life. Her magical staff, Raising Heart, lives with me in my profile picture.

Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog) My 7th birthday was Sonic themed. And I was 14 when I played Sonic Adventure 2 (perfect timing). The blue guy who showed me you can be cool and a hero. He's lived in my internet handle since I was 12 and signing up on the GameFAQs forums.

Optimus Prime (Transformers) I was a little kid, growing up on reruns of Transformers G1/G2. In those days, Optimus was like a second father to me (and like a first father to many). A role model from the start who taught how to 'be strong enough to be gentle'. He's also lived in my internet handle since the days of dial up.

That's the big top three out of the way. The rest is all gravy.

4. Kirby That happy, pink little guy with more power than the elder gods who just wants to eat cake and have a good time. I have Kirby on my t-shirt right now actually.

5. Asuka and Homura (Senran Kagura) Ninja girls from rival schools that would develop a powerful bond and friendship. This series, which sadly will never see the final game it deserved, was some of the most exciting and happy gaming times I had in that era. Just when I thought we couldn't have pretty girls in gaming anymore, SK delivered.

6. Strong Bad (HomestarRunner.com) The original king of the Flash cartoon era of the old web. I've kept up with this masked wrestle man ever since the 10th grade. The whole cast on that website makes for a good time.

7. Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Detective Pikachu, & others) The man who got me excited to watch movies again. And yes, Ryan himself is basically a living cartoon so he counts.

8. The Doctor (Doctor Who, specifically the 10th Doctor played by David Tennant) I watched the first 5-6 seasons of the 2005 reboot. This show, and specifically David's Doctor, was there to see me through a lonely time in my life.

9. Zelda (The Legend of Zelda BotW/TotK) This version of Zelda was one that really got me feeling in a video game again. 10/10 would rescue again.

10. The Lord of the Rings Just all of it.

A Silly List of Yuri-focused Fandoms on Ao3

Because I have nothing better to do, I tried looking through the Ao3 anime & manga fandoms and see which ones have f/f as the most used relationship category. To limit things a bit and see which are the “biggest” fandoms there, I only noted down those that have over 100 f/f works.

(It’s possible that I’ve missed a few, so please tell me if you know of a fitting fandom!)

1. BtVS: Faith Lehane. Does she need anything more written here? No. Just Faith Lehane.

2. Tales of game series: A tie between Magilou Mayvin, Velvet Crowe, and Rita Mordio. Magilou is hilarious but complex, Velvet is the best and by far most complex protagonist in Tales, and Rita is just a nerdy little lesbian.

3. The Witcher (games and books only): Ciri!!! Geralt and Yennefer are amazing, too, but Ciri is just so cool and has amazing development through the books to the end of W3.

4. She Ra: Catra and Entrapta. Catra is another tragic redeemed character and a freaking awesome lesbian cat. Of course I love her. And Entrapta just was the best of all time in s5 like really.

5. Avatarverse: AtLA is Katara and Azula. For literally the opposite reasons. LoK is Asami Sato, who still somehow is called boring. Kyoshi books is Kyoshi, I adored the depth given to her character. Yangchen books so far, Yangchen--a surprisingly manipulative, cunning young lady.

6. Persona franchise: FUTABA. Look, I named the MC Kyou, so she literally said to me “A wild Kyou appeared!” one time. Almost exactly my personal tag. As if she wasn’t already the best little support dweeb.

7. Pokémon: Lucario. I got to know him in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew and have been OBSESSED ever since. He’s so tragic and noble. I love that shit. Plus he’s so cool. Best character and best Pokémon.

8. Xena Warrior Princess: Callisto and Gabrielle (very much love Xena too). Callisto was always their best villain and Gabrielle had a fascinating arcing character path.

9. Star Trek franchise: Seven of Nine. Give me all the complex redemption and learning to be human again (her deeper humanity in Picard is CORRECT with her trajectory). She added so much to Voyager beyond being “the hot one.”

10. Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha: Fate Testarossa Harlaown. Once again with tragic characters getting some kind of redemption lol

11 because I feel guilty there is only one guy on this list. Fullmetal Alchemist: I’ve been obsessed with Edward Elric since I was 12 years old.

Pretty epic how I’m on the second last day of this little 5 day break from school and I already feel like I’ve accomplished nothing - having watched one new show, clearing my watch later playlist on YouTube at last, and playing some videogames. I mean that’s all well and good - I reviewed the anime I did watch, clearing my watch later playlist has been months in the working and with regards to videogames, I managed to play a good amount of a new one, grab some achievements and beat some Pantheons in Hollow Knight, and win 7 games in Tetris 99. So again I didn’t exactly accomplish nothing.

But at the same time, the plan I had for this whole thing was to like, watch Gakkougurashi on the Wednesday, then over the next 3 days watch the entirety of the Nanoha series and write a lengthy review of the whole thing, and then use the remaining days to catch up on seasonals and schoolwork. I’ve watched Gakkougurashi and caught up on seasonals. Of everything I wanted to do, that’s all I’ve done. Not that I didn’t enjoy what I ended up doing instead, and I’ve still got most of today and all of tomorrow left anyway, but I’m still annoyed with myself for making no progress on my plan to watch outside of Gakkougurashi. Also I don’t fucking want to do my schoolworkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

5. What’s a crackship you love?

Not quite ‘love’, but I’ve got something that’s close enough to count for this question.

After my experience the first time I tried a Danganronpa gift exchange, where it turned out to be far more ship-centric than I’d first expected and this caused... problems, I’ve decided that if I did another one I’d included something in the ship section of the entry form like,

“I’d prefer no ships, but if you need to write something shippy please make it Kyoko Kirigiri/Nagito Komaeda.”

Why Kyoko Kirigiri/Nagito Komaeda? Mostly reasons relating to the conclusion/afterstory of my WIP. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Neither? I’m sorry, but both of those are like the exact opposite of what I want from my fic.

If you forced me to pick - at gunpoint, or something like that - I’d go with Enemies to Friends to Lovers. Squint just right, and it looks sort of like the tropes I do like in my fic: morally grey sides/more than two sides.

My absolute favourite fanfic of all time is the Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha fic Game Theory. It’s got just the sort of three-way conflict and nice sprinkling of canon details that I love.

So I was tagged by @strawberryeclaire to do my top 5 anime OPs!

1. Mawaru Penguindrum season 2

The full song is honestly a blessing from God and deserves to be appreciated in its own right, and when combined with the amazing colourful, stylised aesthetics of this gorgeous anime, this was a shoo-in for number one.

2. CLANNAD After Story

Seriously beautiful song, seriously beautiful visuals, perfectly capturing the wistful, romantic tone of the anime. I’ve never not appreciated watching this. (BTW, if only to sate my pettiness: if we were including VN OPs, Little Busters! would win by a mile.)

3. Princess Jellyfish

A more down to earth one than the others on this list, but the earnest, quirky style of this one is just SO pleasing that as soon as I remembered it for this list I had to smile!! It captures the spirit of these great characters so well, and the song is so catchy and relatable!!

4. Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito

If you’re like any sensible person out there, you’re probably like ‘huh?’ Because yes, this is an OLD one - one of the original yuri anime out there, and one I suspect hasn’t stood the test of time. (And even at the time, the ending drew criticism - although it’s not too different from a number of other yuri anime out there...) But, I had a memory of the song from this one being really good, and when I rewatched it, I had to admit the entire thing is absolutely fantastic - the fantastic visuals, the editing, the overall atmosphere - just a really good OP!

5. Yuri Kuma Arashi

Okay, another Ikuhara - and I was reluctant to add this as well for that reason. But, shit, man. Everything about it is just SO GOOD - the visuals, the song, the plentiful yuri - it can’t be denied this show is My Aesthetic in like ten different ways and this OP shows them all.

Honorable Mentions:

Fruits Basket. Darn it, I really intended to sneak in this one on the end there, but apparently there’s a five embed limit, foiling my plan!! Anyway this OP made a huge impression on me back when I was an anime newbie and hoenstly, the unique, heart-breakingly bittersweet feel of it still hits me to this day.

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha. Just watching this almost made me cry ;__; admittedly this is more because of nostalgia than any inherent quality but who cares!! I love it!!!

Little Busters Refrain. Objectively speaking I still can’t put this on the same level as CLANNAD (*grits teeth and glares at KyoAni eternally for not producing Little Busters!) but re-watching this made me so fucking mad all over again that nobody watched it :’))) so uhhh the emotions are there!!!!

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. The song is SO FUCKING GOOD and the visuals are SO CLOSE but I still feel like they could’ve pushed it further into making it AMAZING.

Chihayafuru. Nostalgia again ;____; (Why am I getting so nostalgic, this was only like three years ago??? But Chihayafuru is so god damn good...)

Yuri!!! on Ice. I still have Complicated Feelings about this anime but. I’m listening to it right now and I want to cry. The song is so.... so good, and the visuals as well... this probably also could’ve been no. 6 on the list tbh.......

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. I genuinely regretted watching this anime beyond the first three episodes (which were good!!! It’s just all the rest that was pointless lol), the OP is genuinely really Weird in a thoroughly enjoyable way. And the ED is in some ways even better IMO!!

(Though if we’re bringing in EDs, I can’t possibly not mention Inu Boku SS’s, even despite me never having seen the show. It’s just too impossibly CUTE!!)

11. how do you choose the anime you watch? Someone tells me to watch something or better yet, forces me to watch something while we’re together. That works a charm :D Otherwise I just - choose the most nonsensical serie to watch from my list of series I should watch, like I once started watching lovelive. And now consider to maybe start watching deresute the anime. Even tho I have so much better things to watch, considering I’m not even really into idols <’’D;;;

12. skip or listen to intros/outros? Listen! Unless they’re awful somehow. Like Death Note’s 2nd opening. Also if you want an anime with good outros, watch Silver Spoon. More so in the 2nd season I used every outro to just cry my little heart out over all the things that had happened in the episode ;___; I love that serie oh my god

13. how do you cope if your friends or family don’t like you watching anime? I don’t think anyone like doesn’t like me watching anime, but there are and have been friends who’ve ridiculed me in some way over it and either I have just clammed shut and sat in silence in a party for an hour or then tried to confront the person that hey you know that’s not funny anymore. Which backlashed immidiately and I was like Well. Gee. Sorry I offended you.

14. do you stop an anime midway if you don’t like it? Yess. Shuffle! I put to a full stop once I had enough. Same with Tokyo Mew Mew, Kaichou wa Maid-sama! and K-On! :):):)
