Queer Books and What I Think Of Them (Part 1?)
Hello! I wanted to talk about books, so I wrote this up. I hope you enjoy :)
Simon Vs The Homosapiens Agenda By Becky Albertalli
It was the first queer book that I ever owned. I read the entire thing in 6 hours on the day that I got it. It has gay and bi rep and has a mlm romance at the center of the story. Also, it’s quite better than the movie, in my opinon.
Leah On The Off Beat By Becky Albertalli
It’s the sequel to Simon Vs, taking place a while after the first book. I also read this book in 6 hours on the day I got it. It centers around a bi wlw relationship with a background mlm relationship. I really liked it, just as much as I liked Simon.
The Song Of Achilles By Madeline Miller
One of my favorite books! It’s a retelling of The Illiad, told through the perspective of Patroclus! It centers around a mlm relationship that I can only describe as intensely requited love. I highly recommend it, but it includes the fallowing: major character death, war, sexual assault, loose descriptions of sex, and kidnapping. Also, it’s nearly 400 pages.
Aristotle and Dante Discover The Secrets Of The Universe By Benjamin Alire Sáenz
I don’t really remember this book, to be perfectly honest. If I recall correctly, it takes place in the 70s or 80s in a rather small town, has poc rep, and the ending includes mentions of transphobia. I do remember that it centers on a mlm relationship that I’m pretty sure was quite the mess, the book takes place over a year, and the book is about 350 pages. I don’t feel like I can recommend this book until I give it a reread.
The Last To Let Go By Amber Smith
The first wlw book on this list! It centers on a young woman named Brooke and her family. Over the course of the story, she ends up realizing that she’s a lesbian, but it isn’t the main focus of the story. As for the main story, it includes the death of a parent, domestic abuse, murder, funerals, and generally characters learning to work through and live with trauma. There’s also a fade-to-black sex scene if I remember correctly. I don’t remember there being any poc rep, there’s two lesbians and one gay man, and there’s a mute character. The book is 363 pages long. I recommend it if you want a book about coping and living with trauma but if you just want a soft lesbian romance, this isn’t the book for you.
Lumberjanes By Noelle Stevenson
If you do want a soft lesbian romance, here you go! Lumberjames is a comic series by the lovely Noelle Stevenson. It centers around a group of girls who are in a group that’s alot like Girl Scouts as they try to earn badges and learn about the magical things in the woods surrounding them. It includes a soft wlw romance, poc rep and a transgender girl in the main cast. I’ve only read two volumes of the comic so far, but I highly recommend it!
