@hd-erised favorites ❄️ (so far)
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in this amazing fest and made it happen, the sheer talent on display was astounding. I can't wait to catch up on all the fics I haven't gotten to yet, and to find out who you all are. I adore you! [Now featuring reveals!]
All Things Go by @sorrybutblog (E, 32,826)
Draco’s back at Hogwarts by court order. Harry’s back for no particular reason at all. Some things change, some stay the same. Neither expects to spend eighth-year living in close quarters, playing rugby (poorly), staying up late, sneaking around, and finally figuring it all out.
This story absolutely knocked me off my feet. The layers of characterization are so rich; Draco is very funny but also humble and guilty and sad; Harry is very horny for Draco and it develops in a completely organic way from his initial animosity; Hermione and Ron are also excellent in the background. The pacing was one of my favorite details, from the way their relationship evolves in person to the shift of the narrative to epistolary and back. This is such a lovely exploration of growing up, an enchanting read if you want something beautiful, that’s sweet and comforting with a healthy dose of wry humor.
The Unknown Door by @amywaterwings (E, 60,979)
There is something wrong with the Bellcrest. The heart of the place beats rotten. Everyone says so. Where Draco is a magical property manager, Harry is a recluse, and they’re definitely not hiding from their problems in the run-down flats of the Bellcrest. Not at all. Not one bit.
One of my favorite things that fic can do is turn over the rocks of Harry Potter canon to reveal what lurks underneath. This story looks at the places left out of the light of the wizarding world, but asks the question: what if we treated the downtrodden and discriminated-against with empathy? What if instead of pushing them further down, we attempted to uplift them? It does this through the viewpoint of Draco, who is not fully reformed when we first meet him. His journey is the inverse of the mistreated beings of magical ability we encounter in this story: fallen from the highest echelons of a prejudiced world, he needs to find a way to see those with whom he now shares social status as people, and in doing so find a way to consider one more “dark” creature worthy of love and kindness – himself. And I haven’t even gotten to Harry, who has his own journey to undergo that’s deftly imagined through both character work and inventive magical systems. This fic is full of empathy and heart and humor; it’s sexy, it’s painful at times (I cried), but it’s so very worth the journey.
Historians by @oknowkiss (E, 29,987)
It’s the Dumbledore’s Army Reunion Holiday, and Harry’s found himself in hot water with his friends once again, after telling them he has a boyfriend he definitely does not have. In an attempt to fix things, he’s made it his colleague on Level Nine, Draco Malfoy’s problem too. Featuring a ski chalet in Switzerland, a pair of bunk beds, and an agreement that should’ve been simple, were it not for all the bloody feelings getting in the way.
This fic is such a damn delight. Harry and Draco are both amazingly rendered, the plot grabs you and does not let go, and there’s an impressive amount of emotional complexity hiding under the classic rom-com setups of fake dating and miscommunications. Oh and it doesn't hurt that the smut is top-tier, all-time favorite status; my brain pretty much short-circuited at the final scene. The setting is so well-depicted that you will feel the crisp air of the ski chalet in your lungs as you read. The banter is out-of-this-world. Pick up this fic for the perfect steamy, romantic, comfort-read (and because you simply must meet the hideously adorable Professor Monday).
Everything is Relative to You by @thehoneybeet (E, 43,111)
Potter was supposed to have lived. Draco is certain of this. That Potter would no longer walk the earth was tantamount to the sun moving west to east across the sky. If only he could have stopped this from happening, if he’d have known... It comes to him as ideas often did: too late. Or, Harry dreams of his past lives, and Draco is in every one.
The prose in this fic is just *sumptuous.* We travel to many different worlds with Harry and Draco, and each is given detailed description courtesy of some of the most gorgeous sentences I’ve read in ages. This will put your heart through the wringer and, if you are like me, you will say "thank you, more please?" This fic made me think about physics and love and magic and how they relate to each other in ways I never knew I could, it was an intellectual and emotional delicacy.
Draco Malfoy's Foolproof Guide to Reconciliation by @aprofessionalprotagonistonist (T, 5,807)
Narcissa Malfoy’s determined to reconcile with her sister, which means Draco’s stuck spending time with Teddy Lupin — and Harry Potter.
I had to include this fic that does a wonderful job imagining the Malfoy/Black family dynamic, with Teddy being an adorable menace who helps to bring Draco and Harry together. It was such a sweet read over the holidays when I, too, was surrounded by tiny terrors. This story will make your heart grow at least three sizes.
Heliotropic by @sharperthan [ART]
Draco does not approve of the new gardener his mother has hired. Not one bit.
I was blown away by this art – there’s so much emotion on display, it’s a subtle and captivating story told in words and pictures.
And shout out to some of the other faves that I would write a million more words about if I had more hours in the day!

Note
Hi friends,
I wanted to let you know that with each story submitted into this fest, it really helped me. I’ve been going through depression for at least eight years, and I will go on Tumblr to read stories or two follow many crazy people out there. I once almost given up on writing in general, because people would say that there was no point in writing it wouldn’t get you anywhere, and all that bull crap that I was being told however, I never stopped writing. I simply just stopped publishing stories because of this, but I am slowly going back into it all because of this fest.
When I saw Jilytober fest, I simply fell in love with everyone’s writing. I haven’t read all of them but the few ones that I have I am left astounded by the amount of talent that each person has. I love seeing how people interpret each prompt just knowing that they got an idea from something so minuscule is brilliant .
I truly can’t thank you all because there’s times where I just thought it’s not worth going on but I’m happy to have something to look forward in, seeing everyone’s coming together, and writing, or drawing or two characters of a series is amazing. I truly don’t know what to say. At this point, only that each and everyone of you have helped me through a seriously difficult time in my life.
I hope you all know how important you are, and that you leave a lasting impact on me forever. Not just that, but also the fact that all of you have such talent that it warms my heart knowing you all put your work out there and written whatever’s small or a multi fic, like a very long masquerade, that I still have to read, just know that the first three lines had me absolutely captivated.
I truly love how this fandom is so supportive of one another, that it makes me feel warm being able to be a part of this community. If I’m honest, I was so close and taken down all my stories, that I’ve written for a pairing in the HP series because I was at a low point in life. But I’m glad that I didn’t press the delete button because you all helped me see how writing helps.
Seriously from the bottom of my heart thank you to each and everyone of you. And thank you for the people that helped make this fest happen because without you, there wouldn’t be a fest in the first place
❤️
This makes me so so so happy and content. Words fail to express how thankful I am for this. The fact that you took the time to write all of this… makes me so grateful. I’m glad got to play a role in you being happy! It’s because of people like you in this fandom that I love to organise this! There’s so much more that I’m feeling as I’m reading this but words are failing me 😖😖. Just know that you’re cherished in this jily community! We love you
Thank you for writing this, truly!

My Internship journey with IFORTIS CORPORATE, INDIA.
My name is Arpita Barua. I’m a first-year student at Shri Shikshayatan College, Kolkata pursuing BBA. I’m currently a Marketing Intern at IFORTIS CORPORATE. IFORTIS is basically based in Bangalore, India is coming together as global partners to offer the Global Youth Entrepreneurship Program. It’s a corporation that offers services in Information technology, Corporate training, and Event Management. The company’s future goal is stepping into Apparel Manufacturing Industry (Textile & Manufacturing Industry) with an ambitious mission to create more employment opportunity for the women & youth across India and helping them to become self-reliant with an obsessive focus on the quality, worker’s safety & welfare, social responsibility, and customer satisfaction.
As I’ll be pursuing MBA after graduating from BBA so I wanted to gather experience in marketing and to learn more about it. IFortis helped me a lot in this matter. I would like to thank IFORTIS for giving me this opportunity and my journey with them was really appreciating. My journey started 1 month back when I got selected at IFORTIS for an internship in Marketing.
Ifortis conducted an online fest called “STEP AHEAD "India´s First & Largest Virtual School Fiesta", bringing together the dazzling school children, from all over the world and providing the spotlight to make it beam even brighter. Students from all over the world are invited to participate and showcase their talents in various fields. The main motive to organize this competition was to provide students with a platform virtually to showcase their talents in this pandemic situation. So I got my first task of gathering students to participate in this fest. Gathering students for this fest was a difficult task but not an impossible one. I eventually contacted people told them why they should encourage their youngsters to participate here as they could be a part of the world by showing their talent, by participation they can boost their self-confidence as it would also make the competition better. Not everyone was encouraged but I didn’t lose hope and told them that if their child has an interest in a particular field then why not participate in this fest as they could win goodies and certificates. I also did come across people who do not use online payment apps and so they could not pay the registration fees but I made them realize that they could give me the money physically and I’ll do their registration on their behalf. By the end of the time period that was given to me for the completion of the task, I congregated a good amount of students. This task helped me a lot to understand and made me experience about the marketing funnel and sales funnel. I learned that what potential customers are thinking and doing at each stage of the purchasing journey. These insights allowed me to invest in the right marketing activities and channels, create the most relevant messaging during each stage and turn more prospects into customers. It also helped me to understand that I need to be adaptable and adjustable with my approach as sometimes we need to go beyond our span of roles and responsibilities in order to satisfy them. This is a very climacteric point in order to keep a good image of the company. This helped me to better my communication skills as I approached a lot of people and this was also a part of the marketing strategy. This was indeed a very astounding experience of mine at Ifortis. I also did get negative influence from my known people that I couldn’t gather any experience by this but it was up to me and I know that I gathered a good experience. An experience or training that a fresher could get and I was totally satisfied with it. I want to thank Ifortis for giving me such an opportunity.
Lastly, I would also like to thank my Team Leader “Manasvi Haldia” who guided me a lot in this whole journey by making me understand the whole process so that I could do my task smoothly. She had a lot of dedication to my work. She was so genuine that she even told me to text her personally if I was stuck anywhere. She also appreciated me for the successful completion of my work.
I absolutely gained a lot of experience which will help me in the future. Thank you.

happy 2020!!
Or, almost! It’s still before 10 PM for me!
Honestly, when I started this blog, I just kind of kept in my small little corner (well, I still do) and threw out content and then vanished again. Come March, I will have been doing ficlet fests for an entire year!! And come July, this blog will be two years old.
Just knowing that my fics have made a handful of people smile is more than enough for me, but the outpouring of love and kindness you all send my way makes me feel very mushy.
This year alone, including fic and original works, I’ve written over 225k words. Once upon a time, 1000 words felt like it took me eons, and I had to go through and chuck out a good portion because ugh, WRITING, and now I’m eager to see where the stories take me. I will always hem and haw over things and worry every time I post something, but I want you all to know how much I appreciate every like, reblog, comment or anonymous ask.
I want you all to know how much I love writing these reader fics, because, for me, I believe fandom should be an inclusive place and a bridge to people you may never have met otherwise. I think everyone should be able to see a bit of themselves sharing kind words with their favorite characters, and the amount of creativity and work that I see people put into the xreader fics is just. Astounding. Keep going. Forget anyone who calls it cringey or who snubs it because it doesn’t fit with canon - the work you’re putting into it is honing your skills, and even if you only ever decide to use your talents for writing fics, it is more than worth it. Someone out there is looking for the fic that only you can write, so write it for them, but most of all, write it for you.
2019 has been good but hard, and I’m not going to lie, I’m ready for it to be done, so I hope you ring in the new year with gladness!!

AEW Fyter Fest
AEW keeps the momentum going with a card that was a little less prestigious, but a little more chaotic, but overall entertaining and plenty filling.
- What’s the draw of the ‘Buy-In’ pre-card, especially when the whole show is free? Obviously don’t give away your best offerings for nothing, but if the point is bringing eyes to the product and having them follow-up by buying the event... these pre-cards are not going to do that. - I sort of love the introduction of JR with entrance music as a ‘and now the real show is beginning’ signifier. JR’s really got some of his passion back, and the combination with Excalibur continues to be a surprisingly satisfying one. May Alex Marvez stay out of the both indefinitely. - Camera cuts have calmed down. I think this event was at .5 Dunns for unnecessary cuts, which is still far too many, but at least they stopped stacking cut/cut/cut and opted for more of those lovely crane shots. Entrance music should be way louder, the pyro was fun, the dumb fyre fest gag at least allowed for a colourful set design and AFAIK no legendary Canadian grapplers fell off the stage trying to head straight back up the tunnel. So that’s a big win.  *Pre-Card Best Friends v SCU v Private Party (**) - Three way tag-team matches with only two active teams is always an odd stipulation and as fun as that match was to get the party started, the format leads to any finish getting a bit dusty as a result. Really enjoying Marq Quen and his Wesley Snipes-in-Demoltion Man fit. Allie v Leva Bates (dud) - The Librarians are an intentionally awful gimmick with plenty of winking going on, which is fun on BTE for thirty seconds a week but the live crowd seems to be beyond done with Bates and Avalon and the shushing. I will admit it took too for long it to click for me to realize the heelish potential in wrestlers attempting to keep the crowd as quiet as possible, but as fun as that meta-irony is, it meant this slow moving match which should’ve hyped up the crowd on the debuting Allie (The Bunny alive and well after being killed to death by Su Yung on Impact, Cherrybomb’s current whereabouts unknown.) looked worse than it was and was the worst thing on the card. Michael Nakazawa v Jebailey (**) - I have heard the name enough by now that I know that Jebailey is ‘the’ CEO guy but I don’t really know what that means or what he does in everyday life but he’s certainly a non-wrestler and yet he showed a decent grasp of the fundamentals and Nakazawa ran him through what was a DDT-esque comedy match with some funny spots and a nice turn for Bryce Remsburg as wrestling’s most committed comic referee.  *Main Card CIMA v Christopher Daniels (**1/2) - Daniels has never felt like a bigger deal than he does now, on the edge of fifty. Hard not to root for a guy with 25+ years experience trusted to have an explosive curtain jerker and get the crowd into the evening. CIMA’s an excellent foil, the pair are so smooth and deft at building a match I only wish there was more at stake between them, which is maybe the through-line of the whole evening barring some exceptions. They’re putting in groundwork elsewhere for the fall, but before AEW gets to TNT they’re going to do some more of these exhibition style affairs. Riho v Nyla Rose v Yuka Sakazaki (***) - A pox on B/R live or my friend’s wifi for stalling and so we missed Yuka’s amazing theme song, but AYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA aside, this was a really nice match with a bit of sloppiness that nevertheless made up for the kneecapping of Nyla via Awesome Kong last month. Nyla looked every bit the powerhouse, pulled off a couple really nice high-energy maneuvers (knee drop from the top rope to the rope-hung Riho was nuts.) Conversely, there were definitely moments early on where it looked too much like a two-on-one match, though it did ultimately build to a satisfying bit of anguish for poor Yuka. Hangman Adam Page v Jimmy Havoc v Jungle Boy v MJF (***) - Prayers up for the audience-cutaway victim of MJF’s savage (rote but knocked out of the park) promo. Salt of the Earth. - Wondered what Havoc was bringing to the match until I realized it’s nice to show him in a more conventional competition and it doesn't harm him in the least to eat a pin. A good showing, though I miss the AFI. - Jungle Boy is going to be great. Got in some really bananas aerial stuff, and like... not to put too fine a point on it, but he looks like Luke Perry. - Adam Page is money. I don’t remember exactly but how is it he was more or less randomly assigned to Bullet Club-RoH as ‘just a guy,’ just three years ago? Sure, he was 24 years old and still finding his pace in the ring, but everyday there is less and less doubt that he’s a top guy, he’s your big beautiful babyface hero. Match was as good as one could reasonably expect from a four-way. Cody v Darby Allin (****) - A lot of the cards for All In, DoN and Fyter Fest have been exhibition matches for skill and style. Cody, probably recognizing where his strengths as a wrestler lie, has been the big exception -- nothing at All In had the emotional resonance of Cody winning the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, nothing at Double or Nothing (or most of wrestling in 2019) could touch the intensity of the Rhodes vs Rhodes match, and last night Cody delivered another of the best version of himself and helped Darby Allin make himself a big fucking deal. The kid is nuts, though I have to assume some skateboard bumps put falling on mats to absolute shame. Maybe my friends and I are nuts, but we were all pretty sure that the controversial post-match chair shot was largely taken on the shoulder with some accidental (and sharp) contact to the head. Also is it really a Cody match if he doesn’t gig? Apparently there have been some subsequent developments suggesting they really did intend for one (1) unprotected chair shot for the love of the sport, to which I say, again, Cody is his father’s son.  The Elite v Lucha Brothers & Laredo Kid (****) - 100% exhibition, 100% spot fest, despite the pseudo-feud going between the Young Bucks and Los Hermanos de Lucha, this was bound to be one of those pure sprint ‘show me what you’ve got’ type of matches. Emotions, strife and storytelling are integral to the wrestling theatre, but so is the actual wrestling. The Young Bucks and their perfect opponents -- Penta & Fenix, also the Motor City Machine Guns, also SCU, also the Briscoes -- are the finest purveyors of tag team wrestling in form of the free-flowing, spot-to-spot-to-spot kinesis that they’ve made their name on and this was no different from the ‘usual’ mind-bending and entertaining spectacle possible when The Elite are in the ring. That Laredo Kid came out and hung tough with 5 of the best wrestlers in the world is astounding and marks him as one to watch. - Of special note, as usual, is Fenix, who is better and crazier every time I see him, like he’s in the process of a Hiromu Takahashi-esque supernova. Legitimately might be the best talent to appear in the ring for AEW.  Jon Moxley v Joey Janela (***1/2) - Loved the work Justin Roberts did to introduce this match. Such gravitas. So silly. - Moxley’s back in his element, and I’m suddenly a huge mark, though I am way more excited about what he’s been doing in New Japan, up to and including his choices in ring gear. Though at least he’s out of jeans and wife beaters. Match was well-paced for a deathmatch style, no doubt owing to both party’s absurd enthusiasm for this sort of utter nonsense.  - Joey Janela has way too much of a Mick Foley (for the fans, for the love of pain) in him and I don’t think any amount of beatings will beat it out of him. Though Moxley seemed game to try. - Barefoot thumbtacks is decently fucked up, I think. The level of mayhem was balanced nicely between sadism (tacks, barbed wire boards,) wrestling nonsense (barbed wire wrapped chair) and satisfying spots (Joey’s big elbow drop.) - Kenny getting his revenge was necessary but seemed a bit half-hearted, almost? I’m plenty excited for their match as is, all he needed to do was assault Mox in the ring and peace out, but I guess tit-for-tat is the law of the jungle.

The Weekend Warrior 8/6/21 - THE SUICIDE SQUAD, FANTASIA FILM FESTIVAL, VIVO, ANNETTE, AILEY, NEW YORK ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL, JOHN AND THE HOLE, and More
After a week with three new wide releases and others coming up in August with three and even four (!), it’s kind of nice to get a “quieter” week with only one wide release, plus it's one that I’ve already reviewed. Yay!
Tumblr media
With that in mind, that allows me to start things off with two film festivals that are near and dear to my heart, the first being the 25th annual installment of the Fantasia International Film Festival, which runs from this Thursday, August 5 through August 25. That’s three weeks, which is sort of the norm, although it will be a festival that blends virtual with in-person screenings making it a true hybrid festival. Personally, I would love to be up in Montreal for some of the in-person screenings, as they tend to be quite rousing and rowdy events -- and that will include an early preview of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad this Thursday -- but I will have to settle for the fest’s vast screener library inste ad. Not that I’ve actually had time to watch much as I watched my entire weekend and free time slip away in order to watch and write about other things, but there’s some good stuff.
For instance, they’ll be premiering Donnie Yen’s new movie, Raging Fire, directed by Bennie Chan, next Tuesday, a few days before it gets a theatrical release across North America. (Its International Premiere is actually taking place at the New York Asian Film Festival, which you can read more about below.) Fantasia will also have the World Premiere for Rueben Martell’s Don’t Say Its Name, a horror movie featuring indigenous talent both in front of and behind the camera. Let Me Make You a Martyr filmmaker returns with his new crime-thriller Ida Red, starring Joshua Hartnett, Frank Grillo and Melissa Leo.
This year’s Fantasia is going to close with The Great Yokai War - Guardians, the sequel to Takashi Miike’s The Great Yokai War which opened Fantasia way back in 2006. In fact, Miike has probably been one of Fantasia’s most consistent guests, having many movies playing at the festival that never get released in the United States in any form.
It’s going to be an interesting mix of in-person screenings and on-demand virtual ones, and as in the past, it’s almost impossible to see everything. I think my only issue with Fantasia is that there are so many great genre films played there every year that it’s very hard to figure out which ones to watch when you’re not actually there on the ground.
Tumblr media
And then closer to home in New York, another personal favorite, the New York Asian Film Festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary in a combination of virtual and in-person screenings running between Friday, August 6 and August 22. Sure, there can be a bit of overlap between the NYAFF and Fantasia, particularly in the Asian content, but there are also a few distinct things, like the festival’s opening night film, Escape from Mogadishu from South Korea’s Ryoo Seung-wan, which covers the same Somali civil war as Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down but from another perspective. It will also be released in theaters this Friday. Chinese actor Chan King Long’s directorial debut, Hand Rolled Cigarette, will also premiere this Friday, as will Aimee Long’s directorial debut, A Shot Through the Wall, both of them debuting at the Walter Reade Theatre (the latter on Sunday).
And there’s just a slew of virtual screenings of some of the latest and most recent Asian films, many of which will never get any sort of release in the United States. That is probably the best aspect of the NYAFF, because while there are many filmmakers like Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho, who will eventually break out here, many of the biggest Asian filmmakers first got their start with movies at NYAFF. That’s why those interested in international cinema should definitely be giving the NYAFF some of their time and money every year, since it’s such a terrific discovery festival… plus it’s also a lot of fun. I’m half tempted to go up to see some of the in-person screenings myself, this weekend.
Tumblr media
I’ve never attended Geena Davis’ 2021 Bentonville Film Festival, but thanks to it also going semi-virtual or hybrid, I’ll have a chance to see a few movies I might not have otherwise. There are a few great films by women directors that have already played at other festivals and will be released soon, such as Sian Heder’s Sundance award-winning Coda (which opens next week!) and Natalia Morales’ Language Lessons, both excellent films that have played festivals this year. Other films I’ve seen and liked that are playing Bentonville, including the Van Jones doc, The First Step, and the comedy, 7 Days.
I’m also interested in the World Premiere of The Disappearance of Mrs. Wu, directed by Anna Chi; Waikiki, Christopher Kahunakana’s feature debut about a Native Hawaiian hula dancer trying to escape an abusive boyfriend; Edson Jean’s Ludi; and Andrew and Joe Erwin’s doc, The Jesus Music, which looks at Christian Music. Bentonville tends to be another great discovery festival. This is obvious when I look at winners from past festivals like Yellow Rose and The Garden Left Behind.
Tumblr media
As mentioned above, there’s only one new wide release, and it’s James Gunn’s THE SUICIDE SQUAD (Warner Bros.), a semi-sequel to the 2016 blockbuster Suicide Squad directed by David Ayer that includes a few of the original actors but a few not of others, although it’s still the same general principle, only done in a far more comedic way. Got it?
In case you missed all that (or the original movie), The Suicide Squad is based on the DC Comics superteam, of sorts, made up of DC villains who are seen as expendable as they’re sent on missions by Amanda Waller (played again by Viola Davis). If they fail or try to escape, their heads get blown up by explosives planted at the base of their skull. Fun, huh?
The original movie opened with an amazing $133 million and grossed $325 million In North America alone and another $422 million overseas, although reviews were less than kind and the fans, maybe a little less kinder. Sure, some people liked parts of it, but there were other parts that were just a disaster, so the movie grossing over $300 million was astounding (similar to the “Transformers” movies, in fact.)
Along comes James Gunn, freshly fired from the third Guardians of the Galaxy, which he will be doing next…. After a Christmas Special next year, and a Peacemaker HBO spin-off from this movie that hasn’t even been released yet. Warners snapped up Mr. Gunn, hoping that he could do for their property what he did for Guardians. While this may not be the most important IP in their drawer but has already proven to make enough money that you couldn’t just leave it in there forever. Fortunately, Gunn convinced Warner Bros. to let him make the R-rated Suicide Squad movie that the first one should have been and without the reins of a PG-13 Disney-released movie, Gunn could go absolutely nuts, and he did.
Some might be worried about WIll Smith not being in the sequel, because let’s face it, Big Willie is indeed an A-list star with a wide variety of fans of different ages, creeds, and colors. The fact that Will Smith could help turn an Aladdin movie directed by Guy Ritchie into a significant hit for Disney, well, that shows his power.
Even without Smith, Margot Robbie returns as Harley Quinn, who was last seen in last year’s Birds of Prey, a movie that was expected to do a lot better than its $33 million opening last February, before it got completely hobbled by the rise of COVID in March. It ended up grossing just $200 million worldwide, less than half of that in North America, and it might have put a damper on DC doing another R-rated superhero movie… except The Suicide Squad was well under way. Also back is Joel Kinnaman as Col. Rick Flag, a regular in the comics, and a decent actor but not someone anyone could seriously consider a box office draw. Other than Suicide Squad, Kinnaman has starred in quite a few bombs including a Robocop remake that tanked with $58.6 million domestic (it did better overseas), and then Run All Night, directed by Jaume Collet-Sera of last week’s Jungle Cruise, which made half that amount.
More importantly, the movie introduces a lot of new characters, including Idris Elba as Bloodsport, replacing Will Smith’s Deadshot, which might seem like a bit of a stepdown considering that Smith may be one of the top A-list stars on the planet, while Elba is popular but nowhere on the same level. Hey, it’s truth. Granted, Elba played Heimdall in Marvel’s Thor and a bunch of his sequels, and he’s provided his voice in quite a few Disney hits, while also appearing in a few odds and ends in terms of genre films like Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim (which hit the $100 million mark) and Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, which did a little better. Still, Elba has created quite a fanbase around him for shows like Luther and The Wire, and his role in The Suicide Squad should help him line up more leading roles in bigger movies. I wouldn’t expect him to play James Bond but he’ll be around a long time.
After that, there’s sometimes-wrestler John Cena as Peacemaker, another less-than-known DC character, but Cena also brings his fanbase (sort of) from wrestling, to which he’s returning for WWW SummerSlam in a few weeks. Cena hasn’t necessarily made huge waves on the big screen, although we can’t forget that he was just in F9: The Fast Saga, the latest in the unstoppable franchise that’s one of the biggest movies of the pandemic year. He also starred in Paramount’s Bumblebee, adding to his franchise cred. As mentioned above, Cena already has warranted his own HBO Max series, so obviously, someone at Warner Media felt he was doing something right.
Other key roles include Sylvester Stallone voicing King Shark, David Dastmalchian from Ant-Man playing “Polka Dot Man” (about as D-list a DC character you can possibly get but used hilariously in the movie), as well as Ratcatcher 2, played by Daniella Melchior, not be confused with her father, Ratcatcher 1. Oh, and of course, Viola Davis, the Oscar-winning goddess who should have won another Oscar for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, but no, I’m not bitter that it screwed up my oscar pool. There’s a lot of other actors, many from Gunn’s other films like Mike Rooker, brother Sean Gunn, and Nathan Fillian, and if they were in the movie for very long, I would consider them something to consider, though their presences does insure that this is indeed a James Gunn movie.
As has been the case quite a bit since I revived this column to discuss box office, we have to take two things into account, one being COVID and the fears surrounding it that have kept many otherwise sane people away from movie theaters. Also, The Suicide Squad will be premiering concurrently on HBO Max, so anyone who has the WM streamer could literally just turn it on Friday and watch the movie for no extra charge beyond whatever they pay per month. Unlike other movies that had this kind of release, Warners is allowing theaters to play the movie for Thursday night previews, so there’s a lot of money that can be made there (and all weekend) from those who choose to see it in theaters. (Honestly, I have no idea why anyone would want to watch this movie, especially it’s absolutely enormous last act, on a computer or television, but welcome to 2021. Whine whine whine.)
I was ready to go north of $60 million on this one because it seems like the kind of movie that could get people back out into theaters, especially when you realize how much the original movie made and how the idea of heroes whose heads can be blown up at any moment (and in that case, the R-rating helps). Then I remembered Birds of Prey and how that came out pre-COVID and couldn’t even open over $40 million, so I had to lower my expectations, although I still think this will fare very well even with HBO Max and COVID in play, so I’m going with somewhere in the mid-$50 million range.
You can read my review of The Suicide Squad over at Below the Line.
This is how I see the Top 10 playing out at the box office:
1. The Suicide Squad (Warner Bros.) - $55 million N/A
2. Jungle Cruise (Walt Disney Pictures) - $17.5 million -50%
3. Black Widow (Marvel/Disney) - $3.6 million -45%
4. Stillwater (Focus) - $3.1 million -40%
5. Old (Universal) - $3 million -56%
6. The Green Knight (A24) - $2.8 million -58%
7. Snake Eyes (Paramount/MGM/Skydance) - $2.1 million -52%
8. Space Jam: A New Legacy (Warner Bros.) - $2 million -53%
9. F9: The Fast Saga (Universal) - $1.5 million -45%
10. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (Sony) - $1.3 million -42%

Hitting Netflix on Friday is the animated musical, VIVO (Netflix), which was produced by Sony Pictures Animation but then sold to Netflix rather than trying to make it work in theaters. Directed by Kirk DeMico (The Croods) and Brandon Jeffords, in features the voice of Lin-Manuel Miranda as the voice of the title character, an organ grinder’s monkey in Havana, Cuba with his organ grinder Andrés, voiced by Juan de Marcos González (Buena Vista Social Club), who desires to be reunited with his long-separated love Marta (voiced by Gloria Estefan), who went off to fame and fortune as a singer because Andrés didn’t want to express his feelings for her in fear of her giving up her singing career. Vivo ends up in Miami and decides to try to find Marta and reconnect the lovebirds.
Just really catchy numbers written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, so if you like his work from In the Heights and Hamilton and Moana, etc. etc, then there are more songs he wrote, which he sings… mostly in the body of an animated monkey. The story itself isn’t particularly great, as the movie takes what would be a unique and novel setting i.e Cuba and introduces a number of animated movie stereotypes, including the weird girl Gabby (Ynairaly Simo), who gets increasingly more annoying as the film goes on.
In general, I loved most of the songs and the musical production (other than Gabby’s theme, which I was not crazy about), more than the story or the actual animation. Because Vivo is a monkey, there’s a weird section of the film that talks about vaccines and quarantines, probably written before the pandemic, which just makes it that much weirder.
Vivo has some decent emotional beats and terrific songs, but otherwise, it seems very cookie-cutter in terms of the storytelling. It’ll be just fine for kids, but adults may have trouble staying very interested.

Speaking of musicals, the rock opera ANNETTE (Amazon), written by, and with music and songs from Russell and Ron Mae AKA Sparks, will hit theaters this Friday in advance of its debut on Amazon Prime Video on August 20. Directed by Leos Carax (Holy Motors), the movie stars Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard as stand-up comic Henry McHenry and opera singer Ann, respectively, who get married and have a baby girl named Annette, who is actually a puppet that sings. (I did warn you that this is from Sparks and Leos Carax, right?)
Annette is exactly what anyone should expect from this collaboration between the quirky L.A. avant-rock duo and the French auteur, even if you believe the FFS song that “Collaborations Don’t Work” -- which you would know not to be true if you went to see Edgar Wright’s documentary, The Sparks Brothers, as I recommended last month! But instead of dubbing this a musical, it’s gotta be called for what it actually is… a ROCK OPERA. Annette reminded me a lot of ‘70s musical movies like Tommy and Godspell, where you knew there must have been some drug use involved (cause it was the ‘70s).
Driver’s stage performances are definitely some of the aspects that will divide audiences, because he veers from being an outrageous shock comic (think a mopeyer Sam Kinnison) to just being an insane and abusive jerk who drives even his devout fans away. The two extended sequences show Driver at his most emotive, but he’s also the kind of character that could push the movie’s audiences away as effectively as he does his fans. On the other hand, Cotillard is absolutely brilliant, even if she isn’t singing her own opera, as is Simon Helberg -- yes, that guy from The Big Bang Theory -- as her piano accompanist who later becomes a conductor, and then more.
The movie’s mood constantly shifts gears and direction, although it never is quite funny enough to be considered “comedy,” and if one really needed to categorize it, it would be placed in the realm of dark thriller… with music.
One thing that Sparks fans should know is that this is not a movie full of new Sparks songs, even if it is full of Sparks music. In other words, other than a couple actual songs -- like the opening overture -- there isn’t much of the music that might work separately or out of content with the movie or the story. Like in opera, almost everything is sung with very little spoken dialogue persé, and this was clearly a decision.
I’m not quite sure Annette will find either Sparks or Carax many new fans -- I definitely liked it more than Holy Motors, that’s for sure -- but for many, it’s going to be a strange experience to get through and maybe one they won’t necessarily need to see in theaters.

I finally got around to watching Jamila Wignot’s documentary, AILEY (NEON), which has been playing in theaters in New York the past few weeks and is expanding to other areas this Friday. Of course, the film is about legendary New York choreographer Alvin Ailey, whose work spanned six decades before his death in 1989 but not before he helped many dancers and other choreographers beak it into the contemporary dance scene.
It’s a little weird writing about this movie now, because just two weeks ago, I was writing about another dance doc called, Can You Bring It: Bill T. Jones and D-Man in the Waters, about another specific work by a choreographer and the message it was sharing about AIDS. In fact, Jones also appears in this doc talking about the influence and assistance Ailey gave him earlier in his own career.
Ailey is a much more straight-forward portrait doc about Ailey’s life and career, and because of that, I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as Can You Bring It, but the two movies actually end up acting as nice companion pieces to each other despite being made by different filmmakers in different environments.
Lucy Walker’s documentary BRING YOUR OWN BRIGADE (CBSN) will play in theaters starting Friday and then on Paramount Plus and CBSN starting August 20. It looks at the 2017 fires that absolutely destroyed Paradise, California, and unlike Ron Howard’s Rebuilding Paradise, this is as much about the fire and how it affected people as the aftermath and figuring out how to rebuild. I thought it was pretty good, although it’s tough to
Incidentally, I wrote about and reviewed Edson Oda‘s NINE DAYS (Sony Pictures Classics) last week, but it’s going to expand into a few hundred more theaters this weekend, as well.
Tumblr media
Legendary character actor Udo Kier stars in Todd Stephens’ SWAN SONG (Magnolia Pictures), which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival back in March, and I quite enjoyed it. It will get a limited theatrical release this weekend and then will be released digitally. In this comedy, Kier plays Pat Pitsenbarger, a flamboyant hairdresser who escapes from his Ohio nursing home in order to grant a former client her dying wish of having him design her hairstyle. Also starring Jennifer Coolidge, it will be in theaters this Friday and On Demand August 13, and hopefully I can write more about it next week, because I did quite like it but didn’t have time for another viewing.
Tumblr media
Another movie from Sundance that’s finally hitting theaters (and digital) this Friday is Pascual Sisto’s JOHN AND THE HOLE (IFC Films), written by Nicolás Giacobone, who wrote Alejandro Iñárritu’s Birdman and Biutiful. It stars Charlie Shotwell as the title character, John, who traps his family in a bunker that he finds in the woods behind their home. I wish I could tell you that there’s more to the movie than that or that it offers something riveting or thought-provoking or something unforgettable, but I’d be lying. It’s not good.
It stars Michael C. Hall as John’s father and Jennifer Ehle as his mother, but Shotwell plays such a bland character that I just had a hard time finding anything that could really maintain my interest. The characters were boring, the writing was bland (which says a lot about how great a director Innaritu is), and there was just nothing I could glom onto. In that sense, the movie reminded me a bit of the first time I saw M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable in terms of all the boring conversations that dragged that movie down, and this has a similar issue.
There’s just no way around declaring that there really wasn’t very much that I liked about this movie, and honestly, the fact I tried to watch it a THIRD time after my first two attempts tell me that I’ve done more than my share of trying. It’s just not a good movie.
Unfortunately, my schedule this week got derailed quite tragically, so there were a few other foreign films I hoped to get to but just didn’t have the time…
Tumblr media
From Korea (via the New York Asian Festival, as mentioned above) is Ryoo Seung-wan’s Korean war thriller, ESCAPE FROM MOGADISHU (Well GO USA), as the movie is in Korean, but it’s about two Korean war correspondents caught up in the Somali war.
From Uruguay, Maxi Contenti’s THE LAST MATINEE is about an audience attending the last showing of a horror film in a downtown cinema that’s terrorized by a murderer killing them off one by one. (This is actually my kind of jam so I’ll try to watch and write something about it once I do. I just ran out of time this week.)
From Afghanistan comes Mariam Ghani’s doc WHAT WE LEFT UNFINISHED (Dekanalog), which takes a look at the state-funded filmmaking program during the country’s Communist era with a bunch of writers, actors and filmmakers talking about five unfinished and unedited projects made between 1978 and 1991.
The Film Forum in New York City is starting another film series (or rather, continuing it from when it started before COVID in March 2020) called “The Woman Behind Hitchcock,” starting this Friday, which is fairly self-explanatory, but it should be a great series with a lot of rare films being shown.
Also hitting Apple TV+ this Friday are the first few episodes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s MR. CORMAN, in which he stars as the title character, produces, directs and writes a bunch of the episodes. In it, he plays an elementary school teacher in L.A., who is trying to come to terms with a lot of portions of his life. I’ve seen about half the episodes in the first season, and it’s quite a different show than anything else out there. I’ll have an interview with the Cinematographer, Jarod Presant, over at Below the Line later today.
A few movies that I just didn’t get to this week, include: THE MACALUSO SISTERS (Glass Half Full) MATERNA (Utopia) FIREBOYS NIGHTDRIVE (Dark Sky Films)
Next week, it’s August 13, and we have three new wide releases! (See what I mean?) We get Ryan Reynold’s Free Guy, the horror sequel Don’t Breathe 2, and the Aretha Franklin biopic, Respect.

Why are classic role playing games falling out of the niche and into the mainstream?
I had to include “Mainstream” because there are so many new independent RPG’s being released everyday. It’s astounding when you think about the people who claim gaming is dying, but all these new games are popping up that just rejuvenate it. The thing is these aren’t mainstream titles. These are extremely niche titles that aren’t known nearly as well in the household as say Skyrim and World of Warcraft. These are two of the giants that come to my mind since they have now moved into the mainstream. In WoW’s case, it’s been mainstream since it’s second expansion while Skyrim is far more recent, but they all went mainstream for the same reasons. They’re no longer RPG’s.
WoW is a good place to start. So, what happened to WoW? Simple. It dumbed itself down. It became far more focussed on getting the player through the grind faster than keeping the player there. An RPG’s whole point of existing is to grind and grind until the player become a Demi God. They have to build themselves up and earn their equipment on the way. They also have to take their time to customize their character into its particular role that suits their play style the best.
WoW no longer does this. It now streamlines a certain amount of play styles and allows the players to pick between them. It gets rid of the freedom of complete choice for limited choice. It was possible to customize the type of class they were and not just get a little bit of everything. For instance, what if as a Hunter there was a particular stat that I had no use for and I could bypass it for something else that’s far more useful, such as say boosting my traps. Now, I have to pick one of three set versions which gives me 1/3rd of what I want. This isn’t what an RPG is. This is far more streamlined in order to remove the thinking part of the game along with the freedom of choice and the grind needed to get there.
Some will argue that the old style of the game ended up being streamlined in the end since everyone used the same builds that were optimized to death. The thing is that wasn’t for the whole game's population. If you were a player vs player or a hardcore raider type you’d want to optimize your build for your set role to maximize your abilities. No one forced anyone to do this. It just became a forgone conclusion that it had to be done. I never optimized my characters. I picked what I wanted and I did as I pleased. If someone had a problem with it I played with people who were in it to have fun. RPG’s are always going to be like that. There’s always going to be that optimized choice that outdoes all the rest. That’s a flaw that comes with freedom of choice. It’s a worthy flaw since the games so open that you’ll end up running into more people like you than those who want to just optimize from the get go.
Interestingly enough, Blizzard could have gone the same rout as Rift and allowed the game to optimize itself for the player and then allow everyone else to do it themselves if they pleased. This would have been a good compromise that allowed everyone to be happy without inhibiting creativity and freedom of choice. Sadly, compromises die when the mainstream comes a knocking.
The last thing WoW did was get rid of the grind. It used to be that the player would slowly improve their character and themselves by working their way up in money, skills, stats and player skill. With the lack of choice when it comes to class stats they can’t improve themselves the way they’d want to anymore. Money is now handed to the them. Anytime I’ve played a free account character I’ve hit max money easily. That's with a capped profession level and no access to the auction house. Skills have been gone for a long time. There was a time where you had to improve your ability with different weapons. The lower it was the harder it was to hit. Even armor and weapons are easy to come by. It used to be that the player had to save and buy some, luckily find it after fighting something or make it themselves. All three are gone because quests simply provide them with equipment. It’s an okay idea to get people off and running, but as the game goes on the rewards get ridiculous. It’s possible to get a blue item for delivering a message? Come on! It was far more enjoyable when the first time a helmet or shoulder armor was found. Some of us literally jumped for joy. The other thing that suffers is the player's skill. If they can just roll through every enemy without a second thought no one's ever going to improve their player style. It’s not about all that anyone. It’s all a fast forward button.
Moving on to Skyrim which went into the complete opposite direction to WoW. An example of where it used to stand is the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Oblivion is a classic RPG. Some will argue Morrowind is superior, but I have to use Oblivion since I haven’t played Morrowind. So do forgive me Morrowind fans, I’m not forsaking you. In Oblivion, there are stats such as strength, intelligence, endurance and so on that could be increased with each level. The way leveling worked was similar to Skyrim. The player would  have specific talents that would improve just by using them. Once they improved enough times it was possible to level up. With Skyrim, it turned into being able to increase health, magicka, and stamina. With stamina, the player also gained a weight carry bonus. A point that was just gained could then be used on  any talent that they’re currently leveling up to get a bonus.
It sounds so much easier doesn’t it? The randomness of the stats bonus is now gone in favor of something much simpler. This allows for more freedom with the creation of a character and allows for unlimited possibilites. Unlimited possibilities that end up doing the game in.
I just spent a lot of time on how closed off WoW became with it’s freedom, so this is going to feel odd at first, but Skyrim allows the player too much freedom. RPG’s have so much freedom of choice to them, but players always had to stick to their roles. They couldn’t be a mage in heavy armor without suffering some sort of penalty to other skills that would benefit their spell casting. They couldn’t be a sneak thief with heavy armor. Heavy armor is far more clunky and noisy compared to lighter and tighter leather armor. Mages and thieves need to be light on their feet to create space against their enemy. Wearing lighter armor or no armor helps that problem, but it comes at a cost of protection. This is called balancing. A person who can steal like a pro has to have the threat of angering the warrior he’s stealing from. Without the balance of the threat the player might as well just kill the guy and take his stuff. The player is a near god from the beginning without proper balancing. There is set roles with strengths and weaknesses that create a challenge throughout the game. If everyone could do everything then what's the point in playing a role?
World of Warcraft had the freedom of customizing a specific class. The class still had disadvantages compared to the rest of the classes, but there were ways to help offset it. If a hunter could wear plate armor and have extremely powerful ranged and melee weapons and a pet on top of it why wouldn’t this be the dominant class? Why wouldn’t one be a warlock or mage in heavy armor that can summon demons or atronachs? Everyone would pick those. They’re incredibly powerful. They don’t fit a specific role. For every warrior a healer is needed and for everyone of each people who can do damage is needed, but they’re in danger of dying easily without the warrior holding the line. The player also needs to learn their roles strengths and weaknesses. That's the challenge to the game.
Skyrim gives the player no reason to play again. They can be everything. Not like a jack of all trades type whose only good, not great at everything. The player is a god of all trades as long as they level themselves up. It completely defeats the purpose of roles in an RPG.
Being a god of everything is the honest reason that RPG’s are falling into the mainstream. No one seems to want to play a role anymore. They just want to do whatever they please. Allowing anyone to do anything opens up the market to new people who just want to run around and kill dragons or in WoW’s case, do dungeons. The whole build oneself up and overcome their weaknesses aspect is gone in favor of do as you please. These aren’t RPGs anymore. There is only one role to play now. That's the every-man role of do all that you please with no restrictions. For the niche it’s a let down, but for those who want to jump right in thoughtlessly, that’s perfect until it goes so far that it alienates everyone.
The Call of Duty crowd of today does not want to think. They want to jump in and play. RPG’s have never been about mindlessly doing quests and dungeons. It was about building oneself up. Whether it took the player a year or five the player still made headway. Even in Everquest, the biggest grind-fest of grind fests, this was true. I’m more attached to WoW for its lore and world, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be used here. Killing ten plus enemies a day gets the player somewhere. It builds them up to a point where things start to get easy. They’ll be at that point where they’ll be getting great equipment from dungeons, they’ll hit max level at some point and even if they don’t their skills will be higher and that’s when they’ll really start rolling. Mainstream RPG’s are forgoing this for an easier early game. It’s sad since the early game just set the player up for the easy ride. Not anymore. No one wants anything to be challenging anymore.
Thank you for reading!
I’m going to go play Oblivion.
