10 Photos of Seaweed Blobs That Will Blow Your Mind Batten down the hatches. Stay out of the water, and beware, because it’s coming. It isn’t a shark or a sea monster. No, this marine menace is…seaweed. More specifically, it's a massive blob of the stuff twice the width of the continental United States. And that 5,000-mile-wide gunk raft is heading straight toward the Caribbean. Since 2011, scientists have been monitoring colossal blooms of sargassum seaweed that have hit popular beach destinations in Florida, Mexico, and elsewhere in the Caribbean. This year’s bloom is one of the largest ever recorded, weighing an estimated 6.1 million tons, according to scientists at the University of South Florida Optical Oceanography Lab. Sargassum seaweed is a type of large brown algae, and there are more than 300 species in the Sargassum genus worldwide. The two types most often found in the Atlantic Ocean are narrowleaf gulfweed (S. natans) and broadleaf gulfweed (S. fluitans). Seaweed clumps floating around Earth’s oceans is not always cause for alarm—they actually play an important role in healthy marine ecosystems. According to the Sargassum Information Hub, a joint project between the University of South Florida, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, and other institutions, these floating forests, at their normal distribution, provide a critical habitat for fish, marine mammals, seabirds, invertebrates, and reptiles. That includes threatened loggerhead sea turtles, which hide in the seaweed and eat crabs, mollusks, and various other critters that call sargassum home. Sargassum blooms, however—including the giant blob that's approaching the Caribbean—are too much of a good thing. Scientists have identified several likely mechanisms behind the extreme overgrowth that turns a healthy habitat into a dangerous sargassum bloom, including warming oceans, shifting hurricane patterns, and increased runoff from deforestation and excess fertilizer use, which boosts levels of nitrogen and other chemicals that promote rapid seaweed spread. Eventually, the huge mat of sargassum sucks all the oxygen from the water, which forces out turtles and other animals and creates a dead zone. For humans, the biggest problem with sargassum blooms occurs after it hits the beaches. Cleaning up the seaweed after it washes onto shore isn't just difficult; it can also be dangerous. As sargassum rots, it releases toxic hydrogen sulfide, which can cause respiratory problems in people. The seaweed also contains arsenic, so ingesting it or using it in fertilizer can also pose real health risks. As the Caribbean braces for this year’s sargassum invasion, Atlas Obscura compiled these photos that capture the beauty and peril of prior blooms. (We’d also like to formally pitch Syfy channel to make a horror movie about this monster algae.) https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/big-seaweed-blob-photos-sargassum-bloom

Year 2: Summer Brief - Cognitivation: Enemies and Wildlife Design
One of the most endearing parts of Earthbound was it’s enemy design and feel. Since it’s set in the modern world, no longer are you fighting dragons or demons or little blob creatures, instead you arm yourselves up with a baseball bat, grab your favourite hat and start knocking out Runaway Dogs and Spiteful Crows!
Tumblr media
When you go into the next town, you’ll run into New Age Retro Hippies who may bash into you carelessly, Cranky Old Ladies that swing their bags at you for massive damage and Annoying Revelers that spend a turn to grumble about today’s youth!
Tumblr media
The enemies encountered on your way between towns are more than likely going to be some kind of little everyday creature that we can encounter in everyday life. Just a little more dangerous to our heroes! Enemies are made to fit their environments. Caves are the home to moles or mushrooms or ants, while the deserts are open to scorpions and snakes!
Tumblr media
Of course, this isn’t the only kind of enemies that are affected by Giygas’ influence. Giygas of course has his own henchmen that wield the very psychic powers that you have been using!
Tumblr media
And finally, perhaps the most iconic of Giygas’ henchmen. Complete with a simple, sleek design that easily establishes their authority and position in the Giygas hierarchy. The many classes of the Starmen provide for some of the most challenging battles in the game.
Tumblr media
So, as you can see, the enemy design of Earthbound is absolutely fascinating. They establish a mood in the battle with either their goofy designs or gestures or make you feel uneasy and maybe that the battle will be too much to handle! They all appear in the appropriate places, you don’t get a Starman just wondering the streets of Ness’ hometown at the start of the game. You don’t get scorpions in water. Every location was thought about clearly and the appropriate enemies were placed into them.
Although, not all of the enemies are based off of objects, I really liked that aspect of Earthbound. Like just an everyday object that can be turned into a weapon or a menacing little enemy to fight. So much so, that I messaged a few of my friends and asked them to give me an object and from their suggestions, I generated these little characters in the spirit of Earthbound.
Series 1 - Cognitivation Enemies
Tumblr media
From left to right we have: - Sock (Suggested by Alex) - Chicken Wing (Suggested by Nathan) - Gooch (Suggested by Keanu) - Keychain (Suggested by Kyle) - Vase of Flowers (Suggested by Joe) - Spliff (Suggested by Matty)
For this series, I knew I wanted to have some weird looking enemies and rather than forcing the ideas to come, I simply asked around and got some pretty nice results from their suggestions! We’ll start things off with Sock.
The Sock of Suffering crawls out!
Tumblr media
The Sock of Suffering is a sock that was influenced by the Enigma, gaining consciousness and becoming aware of what it is! Waking up in a draw of someone’s room, it becomes too aware and wants it’s pain to end!
Typically found in messy rooms of people that don’t care for themselves, the Sock generally hids out of the way of people, only encounter-able in dark places. Once found, the Sock shall begin to scream in an attempt to warn off it’s predators. Generating a thick saliva that it’ll shoot out to poison it’s opponent! Though, that is the extent of it’s combat abilities.
Many breeds of this sock exists, coming in all different sizes and colours! Most definitely not available in a store near you.... Or maybe they are?
The Scalding Chicken Wing bursts in!
Tumblr media
A chicken prophet, prays to it’s god before it’s sacrifice, dousing itself in hot sauce it prays for a fire based attack to land! Once it does, it’s power transcends that of a normal chicken! It’s emotional stability goes out the window! Gaining access to the most offensive and potent Fire attacks known to all PSI users!
These can typically be found in Fast Food stores after being greased up in a fryer! The chickens they come from can be found on the farms of the eastern sides of the island, they all pray to the one true lord; Colonel Sanders and pray that their sacrifice will not be in vain! It will use different sauces to enhance it’s capabilities in battle! Although, if it’s paired with a hungry teammate, they may just tuck into it! No matter how hot the chicken wing may be!
The main inspiration for the Chicken Wing’s design was actually hot sauce. Like how hot it can actually be and how it might make you react in pain or anger.
The Armoured Gooch rolls up from behind!
Tumblr media
One of the objects that cropped up that was not made from Enigma’s influence, instead they were sent by Enigma itself to patrol the world and keep guard at certain areas of interest! The Armoured Gooch rolls around, it’s face smushed inside it’s tough armour. It’s defences are high, but lacks an offensive front. It’s not powerful or smart enough to handle PSI based attacks, so it usually rolls into it’s foes.
Wherever Enigma has infected, Gooches will be patrolling the place making sure nobody intrudes. Abandoned factories, city halls, etc. They tend to initiate battle by sneaking up behind it’s opponents, getting the jump on them! Armoured Gooches generally don’t work in teams due to their sheer incompetence, their allies will tend to flee from the battle only to get away from the Gooch!
This is only the basic Armoured Gooch, many breeds exist with many different armour sets to distinguish their ranks. This blue colour being the second to lowest rank.
The Body-building Keychain swings his keys!
Tumblr media
Found abandoned on the streets, this little toy bear keychain had to learn to fend for himself the hard way. Being thrown into it’s situation and linked to a heavy set of keys, the Keychain got sick of it and worked on himself. Transforming him into the Body-building Keychain! A tough, hench little bear who wield his set of keys. Throwing them into opponent or stabbing at them with the keys themselves. It’d probably be more effective if he was bigger than a keychain...
These critters are typically found in abandoned streets or fairgrounds where prizes like these keychains are likely to be.
The Dooming Bloom... Blooms!
Tumblr media
An experiment given life, the Dooming Bloom are a team of three flowers trapped together in a vase! Their absurdly long necks and hefty bodies aren’t a good match as they can’t really stand up on their own, plus they can’t survive without being in water! Much like a normal flower!
The three flowers all represent their life cycle, left is them coming into bloom, a little tired and low energy since they haven’t reached their own potential yet.
Whereas the middle is the happiest little chappie alive! Wearing a big innocent smile, they only want the best in life and tries to pursue every dream they’ve ever had.... Too bad they’re all evil plots to destroy orphanages, cause nationwide pandemics and leave scathing reviews on upcoming movies before they come out! So, don’t feel bad when this guy dies....
The Mean Green lights it up!
Tumblr media
This shifty character is the Mean Green! The Sinister Minister! A devious figure that was created out of Enigma’s own imagination to go down to Earth and unleashing his devious deeds upon hopeless people. Mean Green sells a lot of illegal merchandise that does more harm than good, since it’s corrupting the people of the Earth and letting Enigma take control of their minds!
Working from the shadows in big cities, he’s got a lot of the criminal underworld now on his side. With knowledge of the entire city layout, he knows everywhere to hide and everywhere that’s perfect for operating his plans...
Helping to Develop the World
When it comes to developing stories with deeper narratives, I tend to stick to a very loose plan so that if I develop something I can usually add it in easily without having to majorly change anything. And with designing these creatures first, it gives me a feel of what the world will be like. What locations and challenges can our heroes face?
Maybe they go to an Amusement Park, fighting strong keychains and scalding chicken wings! Maybe they have to venture into the deepest parts of the city to stop Mean Green’s evil schemes!
Not only that, but it’s a lot of fun to look at an object and see how it can be turned into a mean little character that can pack a punch!

I’ve actually been a fan of Sparklite for a while now, ever since I demoed it at PAX West. And while it’s true I didn’t review it, I did agree to give the Switch version some coverage. And even though I’m far from the biggest Zelda fan at the oprainfall site, I do enjoy the classic games, and Sparklite reminds me a lot of the SNES Zelda games. Better yet, it’s a cute little rogue-lite, and in many ways is what I wanted from A Link Between Worlds. Keep reading to see how Sparklite fares on Nintendo Switch.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
First off, the design of the game is delightful, both musically and aesthetically. That hasn’t changed since I played it a couple years ago, but I am happy to report I encountered no lag or slowdown playing on Nintendo Switch. The world of Geodia and the characters that inhabit this ever changing land are colorful, cheerful and quirky. Though none of them get much in the way of development, I wasn’t really banking on deep character arcs in a rogue game. What matters most is everybody serves a purpose, and have distinct personalities and designs. I love the SNES style all throughout Sparklite, and that goes double for the critters that threaten you. There are roving blobs, angry gremlins, spike encrusted worms, angry insects, poisonous mutants, enormous sand golems and much more. Best of all, each region in Geodia has a distinct ecosystem with a melodious soundtrack, and are all inhabited by unique foes. The sound effects are also great, such as the rubbery sound the regenerating plants make when they revive after being chopped, or the ethereal chime of the bulb plants when you touch them. Sparklite also makes smart use of the HD Rumble to make it feel like every hit has punch.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Though there’s not a lot plot-wise, the lore in Sparklite is also interesting. I especially enjoyed how a sort of living technology girds all of Geodia, the core of which is being sought by the diabolical Baron to assume complete control of the land. Throw in some space faring astronauts and a mix of magic and technology, and the whole story is definitely interesting. Maybe not as deep as a Zelda game, but far from barren. Special shout out to all the mechanical bosses in the game, which are big, menacing and totally different. There’s not a lot of them, but they all provide a more than adequate challenge.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Ultimately though, you’re gonna play a game like Sparklite for the gameplay, and I’m happy to report that the controls and mechanics are super easy to pick up and play. The loop of land, explore, accumulate resources, get defeated, return to your air base, rinse and repeat is very addictive. Even though you can’t keep all your gadgets, you hold onto your Patches and titular resource of sparklite, and then you use it to pay for upgrades, which in turn open up more choices. It’s fun watching your roving aerial base expand bit by bit, and it all couldn’t be more intuitive. It’s also fun to challenge yourself to dive deep into enemy lairs in the search of new upgrades and more loot.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
I enjoyed Sparklite quite a lot, but there’s some minor glitches I encountered. Once I had the game force me to the Home Screen, though thankfully I didn’t lose any progress. And oftentimes foes would get stuck in stage geometry, on one occasion making it impossible for me to attack a flying foe. I also was irritated when I found that enemy projectiles can hound me when I leave screens, which frankly shouldn’t happen.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Though most of the gameplay is super intuitive on Nintendo Switch, there’s a few minor things that missed the mark. For example, I don’t like how when you drop into a labyrinth, enemies are charging you before you can even register their presence, and often get in a cheap hit first. I also wish the buttons for pause and menu were reversed. Granted it’s not a huge deal, but as a right handed gamer, I wish I could tweak the settings myself. The load times aren’t prohibitive, only about 30 to 45 seconds, but they can be frequent when entering and exiting structures, which can get a bit annoying. Perhaps most important is that I wish that you could return to the airship other than just when you die or beat a boss, though is sounds like that functionality is going to be added to consoles later.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
All in all, Sparklite is still delightful. Though I do hope Merge and Red Blue Games patch some of those minor issues I mentioned sooner than later, it’s still fun regardless. If you have a Switch and like playing in short bursts, this is a wonderful rogue-lite with charm to spare. I would highly recommend it.
IMPRESSIONS: Sparklite on Switch I've actually been a fan of Sparklite for a while now, ever since I demoed it at PAX West…

Let It B
Ah, the B-movie. It had been a source of entertainment for many a stood-up date or theater talk-back participant about as long as the genre has existed. But what IS a B-movie? We've all seen 'em ( and know almost instantly when we have), but what makes a film "B"? What does a movie need in order to be "B"? And what of the iconic B actor? Who chooses to have a career that, in its basest form, means 'sub-par'? B-ACK STORY B-movies (the term) first came about during Hollywood's Golden Age. The name was for movies meant for distribution as the less-publicized, bottom-half of a double feature. In the later '20's (27-28), during the final days of the silent era, the production cost of feature films from major studios averaged between $190'000 to $275'000. During the time when bigger budgeted films weren't being made, studios still had to pay for sound stages, actors they had on retainer, and hired crew. These studios would make low-budget (i.e. lower quality) flicks in order to make extra cash as well as continue to use their people (mostly to keep them from fleeing to other studios), and would sell these lower films alongside their major productions. In laymens' terms, a B-movie is much like the B-side of an album. (For my youngun's, albums are what music USED to come on. Questions at the bottom, please.) Basically these smaller, cheaper flicks got put into theaters to cover run times between bigger pictures. This then led to micro-budgeted studios creating their own B-movies to sell to the studios at cost (usually producing them at around $30'000 and recouping cost plus). All of this comes about, again, due to the end of the silent era. During that time films were preceded by live acts and a variety of short films and news reels. Once sound became law, those were mostly dropped, and in came cartoons and serials, which were followed by a double feature, the first being the B-film, mainly to draw more money from the viewer. But the major studios soon caught on, developing B-units to produce those less expensive films on-site, nearly killing the indie studios (until the indie-wave of the 70's, but that's another blog). With this came the game of BLOCK BOOKING; or, to get access to a studios' more profitable features, theaters would HAVE to also buy their B-movie in a double-feature set. Along with this insidious scheme came BLIND BOOKING, where theaters would have to take the B-movie sight-unseen. In this way studios were assured a good profit on the lower-grade flick, no matter how awful it might be. The innocent years of Hollywood folks! However, many B-movies were serials, with an actor continuing to play the same character in each, such as the 'Andy Hardy' films staring Mickey Rooney. MOVING ON While the original meaning of the term B-movie ended with the double-feature production ceasing in the 50's, the term is still used for films that don't quite meet A-level criteria. "B-movie" now brings connotations of lower-quality films - which isn't ALWAYS true... To quote Wiki: "In it's current usage, the term has somewhat contradictory connotations; it may signal an opinion that a certain movie is (a) a genre film with minimal artistic ambitions ("Sharknado"), or (b) a lively, energetic film uninhibited by the constraints imposed on more expensive projects and unburdened by the conventions of putatively 'serious' independent film ("Turbo Kid"). Or, in more basic terms: A B-movie is a low-budget commercial film that's NOT art house. The term is now also used for high-budgeted flicks with exploitation-style content (such as much of Tarantino's work). But much good has come from the B-movie genre! Some high profile directors like Jonathan Demme began with B-movies. And it's where many A-level actors got their starts. Recent Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio got his start in "Critters 3". "June Bug" star Amy Adams got through in "Cruel Intentions 2". And Charlize Theron didn't even have a line in "Children of the Corn 3 : Urban Harvest". And one of the more well known is Jennifer Aniston's turn in the cult classic (and where's my blog on those?) "Leprechaun". And neat-o, there's my segway! BACTORS Both John Wayne and Jack Nicholsen got their start in B-movies, too. As well as our former president Ronald Reagan, who was a B-movie star before he ran our country. But there are MANY actors who are known simply for their B-movie work alone. Here's a list of them (in no order other than as I remember them). PJ SOLES: I know her from the 1979 "Rock 'n' Roll Highschool", about a young girl who idolized one of the world's greatest bands, the Ramones; but she also played the tomboy menace Norma in "Carrie", and doomed-to-die friend Lynda in "Halloween". CRISPIN GLOVER: He became a Hollywood staple, and Lorraine's 'density' in "Back to the Future" as George McFly, and recently was the Red Knave in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland", but Glover got his start way back in 81 in a TV movie called "Best of Times", and as the star of the cult hit "Willard". MEG FOSTER: She was a woman looking for love - round 2 - in "The Step Father 2", and played 'Holly' in "They Live" alongside Rowdy Piper, but is most recognized portraying Evil-Lyn in the live-action He-Man movie, "Masters of the Universe". CLINT HOWARD: The brother of director Ron Howard, Clint began as a child actor, but has continued with films like "The Ice-Scream Man", "The Fun House Massacre", and "Nobody Gets Out Alive". TOM SAVINI: Tom was originally a SFX creator for "Friday the 13th", but he's also had quite the acting career in films like "Creep Show 2", "From Dusk 'till Dawn", and "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". BRAD DOURIF: He's now a part of the "Lord of the Rings" legacy since playing Wormtongue in "The Two Towers", but he's always been well known by voice, if not face, as Chuckey in every single "Child's Play" film in the franchise. He also stared alongside Jack Nicholsen in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". MICHAEL IRONSIDE: Most recently he portrayed the zealot Zeus in the fantastic "Turbo Kid", but Ironside's been working since the 70's, including "Scanners", "The Hitchhiker", and a personal favorite, the TV show "Sea Quest". CHRISTOPHER LAMBERT: The one and only true 'Highlander', Lambert's also known for playing Lord Rayden in the live-action version of "Mortal Kombat". CLANCY BROWN: I first spotted him in "Highlander" as well, playing psychopath Victor Kruger, but Brown's gone on to have a formidable career on-screen as well as with voice work, playing Lex Luthor in the animated "Superman" series. But I also knew him as Drew's step-dad Gus from "Pet Semetary 2". BRUCE CAMPBELL: Probably the most recognized B-movie actor of all time, Campbell started in the "Evil Dead" series, and has continued being our hero in shows like "Burn Notice" and "Ash VS. the Evil Dead". This might be where I'd say "All hail the king, baby!", but you get what I'm saying. Moving on. BUT THEY'RE A TO US 'We all have different opinions' blah-blah, 'they're like assholes' yadda-yadda. But there have been B-movies that have, through that grand test of time, been elevated to A-level status by their fans. Usually they're referred to as 'Cult Classics', but we all know we'd watch them in leu of some of the newer, block-busting behemoths of today, given the choice. Maybe it's because of previously stated stars, maybe it's the special effects, or maybe they're just so off the beaten path that we just can't help but fall in love with their weirdness. So here are some of the best - no real order, and nowhere close to the total list. THE EVIL DEAD SERIES There's lots of arguments over whether the original film "Evil Dead" should be included, but Sam Rami's occult trilogy is deeply beloved. From the supreme low-budget gore to Bruce Campbell's chin, this series holds one of the highest Rotten Tomatoes scores on the site, even beating out it's recent remake. Eat it, Dead-its! IRON SKY What IS it with Nazi's?? Why do we like watching them die so damn much? Think it was the genocide? Pretty sure it was the genocide. What-ever, this film's premise is enough. Nazi's waiting on the dark side of the moon to launch a final attack on Earth. Wow. I'm pretty certain I know THAT'S how the funding came through. DEATH BED: THE BED THAT EATS I don't know a film fan that hasn't seen this movie. Its premise is its title. It's a bed. It eats people. SHARKNADO There's FOUR of these fucking movies. No wait, FIVE. I don't get it, but it hit a large enough portion of viewers. Welcome back, Tara Reid. THE BLOB Classic (in general and actual terms) B-movie fare. A gigantic blob that consumes everything in its way. First appearing in the 50's with a young Steve McQueen, it got remade in the 80's and is supposedly being remade again. ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES So, mutant tomatoes decide to start eating us. Vegetarians in the 70's were shaking in their faux suede shoes, I'm sure. BASKET CASE Oh man, do I love this one. A man is born with a homicidal deformed Siamese twin that gets detached via surgery, so the two brothers decide to go after those that separated them. And the deformed one gets carried around in a basket. GET IT?!?! POULTRYGEIST:NIGHT OF THE CHICKEN DEAD Full disclosure - I know one of the SFX guys who worked on this Troma feature. Just look for the talking shit sandwich. BEASTMASTER A guy who can talk to animals goes after a power hungry war lord who sacrifices children. And man-bats. TROLL 2 The best- worst movie ever made. But sadly, no trolls. Just goblins. Please go check some of these films out. PLEASE. You're just hating yourself if you don't. So B-movies live on, as they should. Because we all need to be reminded of what a mediocre world we really live in.
