I’m 20 y/o
I LOVE Tea
I speak English & Arabic
My favourite subject is Math
I study Computer Science (Second year)
Why I made a Studyblr:
to help me focus and stay motivated (hopefully)
to stop procrastinating and be more organized
make some new friends :)
finally i need to get a higher GPA this year
Classes I’m taking this Semester:
Discrete Mathematics & Linear Algebra
Data Structures & Algorithms
Object Oriented Programming
Digital Logic Design

The tale of a girl and 982432475 majors
I changed my major a bajillion times in the past year I’ve been at Northeastern. I began the fall of my freshman year as a combined Computer Science and Journalism major. I talk a bit about combined majors here, but the short story is you learn 3/4s of 2 different majors and get 1 bachelor’s degree.
I took a journalism class last fall called Interpreting the Day’s News. It was one of my favorite classes I’ve taken here. Our professor was a practicing journalist and we talked about the news of the day and how the media covered it. While I loved the class, I decided journalism wasn’t for me. I didn’t see myself as a reporter and I wanted to pursue a job (no idea what) where I could apply my computer science skills to make an impact.
Here’s what I took last fall:
Fundamentals of Computer Science I
Discrete Structures (computer science/math course)
Interpreting the Day’s News
First-Year Writing
So by the end of the fall, I changed my major to Computer Science with a concentration in cyber operations. I like security and I figured I could learn how to be a super cool government hacker. These are the classes I took last spring:
Fundamentals of Computer Science II
Logic and Computation (computer science course)
Calculus II for Science and Engineering
Technology and Human Values (philosophy)
To be completely honest, I was miserable last semester. All of my courses were related to STEM and I was yearning to take a humanities course. Computer science is cool, but I wasn’t enjoying my classes as much as I hoped I would.
I knew something had to change as the end of spring semester approached. I was a bit lost as to what I should change my major to. I did research into different combined majors on Northeastern’s College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS) website and I decided to try a combined major in Computer Science and Cognitive Psychology.
I was pumped to be in a new major but something still didn’t feel right. I spent a lot of time at home last summer thinking about my major. I left journalism last fall because I thought I wasn’t passionate about it. But I realized I have always loved journalism. I always consume news while thinking about the journalists behind it. My friend, a graphic design major, told me she doesn’t walk around with a sketch book everywhere she goes, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t love art. I realized the same is true for me. I was searching for my passion when it was in front of me all along.
I switched back to journalism as a major with a minor in computer science. I love my courses and professors this semester and I have never been happier. With my major change, I now have room to do two Dialogue of Civilizations and one semester abroad. :)
These are my courses this fall:
Journalism 1
Database Design (computer science course)
Law of the Press (journalism course)
History of Journalism
Whew! That was a lot of majors. And I’m just one example of how flexible your academic path can be at Northeastern.
Got questions about majors, minors, or anything in between? Feel free to ask me anything!

journal: college shit pt 1/infinity
I’m going to email the chair of the comp sci and math department on Monday to see if we can schedule a meeting. I have some questions for him about the computer science major, because I have a lot of credits that I’m not sure will go towards the major, but should?
I’m skeptical about majoring in a humanity because of the job market. I really enjoy Spanish and literature, but I just don’t see myself happy struggling to compete for a job or working in the Spanish department of a call center (Although that would be kinda cool. I won’t lie.). Since programming is similar to linguistics in a way, I think I’d like it a lot. I’ve been playing on codeacademy the past few days, and it’s been really fun. I’m planning on taking the intro to programming class this summer to get a good opinion. If I like it, I’ll probably move on to the other classes; if I like those, I’ll go ahead and declare.
However, this means I’ve gotta take 4 more math classes, and I’m not happy about that lol. It’ll be fine though. I can knock out Cal 2 and Linear Algebra in two semesters, and then I can take prob stat over the summer since it’s always offered. If I major in it, I’ll have to take discrete structures as well, but it seems more computer science than math (can someone confirm?).
Aside from all this, I’ve done the math and I’d be able to graduate in 4 years with a major and minor, as well as go on a study abroad, if I take a few summer classes.
A lot of self-discovery shit going on, and I’m so afraid but excited.
