Bharat Bandh updates | Delhi Police tightens security at border points

Samyukta Kisan Morcha, the umbrella body of over 40 farm unions spearheading the farmers’ agitation, has called for an all-India Bharat Bandh. “As this historic struggle completes 10 months, SKM has called Monday [September 27] to be observed as Bharat Bandh against the anti-farmer Modi government,” the SKM had said in a statement. The bandh will be held from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. during which all government and private offices, educational and other institutions, shops, industries and commercial establishments as well as public events and functions will be closed throughout the country, it said.

Here are the latest developments:

Madhya Pradesh | 4.10 pm

No major impact of Bharat Bandh in Madhya Pradesh

The Bharat Bandh had no major impact in Madhya Pradesh on Monday as day-to-day and commercial activities went on as usual.

Eyewitnesses said road traffic was normal in the state capital Bhopal and commercial hub Indore.

However, talking to PTI, Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Mahasangh national president Shivkumar Kakkaji claimed, “The bandh called by farmers against the three laws and for demanding guaranteed MSP for crops has been successful.” He further claimed that the outfit had given relaxation from the shutdown to Bhopal as most of its residents are (private and government sector) employees and not farmers, but the protest was successful in the farming community-dominated small towns of Nimar region, Shahdol, Umaria, Raisen and Silwani. Kakkaji said he was sitting in the “control room” in Bhopal and was getting reports that the shutdown call was “successful”, and added that no untoward incident was reported from anywhere.

Peaceful protests were also seen in districts like Vidisha and Satna. — PTI

The Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Mahasangh’s Indore unit president Rajkumar Patidar said they had planned to stage protests at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) campuses and other places, but the district administration did not give them permission for it.

The RSS-affiliated Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) did not support the bandh.

Its Indore-Ujjain unit president Kamal Singh Aanjna said,”We want the issues related to farmers to be resolved through discussions with the government in a peaceful manner.” — PTI

Strike almost complete in Kollam

The dawn-to-dusk strike called by Samyukta Kisan Morcha was almost complete in Kollam with nearly all business establishments remaining closed and vehicles keeping off the road. While some private vehicles, including those transporting patients, were seen, few KSRTC buses, taxi services and autorickshaws operated on Monday.

All shops, restaurants and other business outlets, including those functioning in interior regions, downed their shutters. Though stray incidents of protesters blocking the vehicles were reported, the strike was generally peaceful in the district. While vehicles and employees of the health department on duty were not affected, most offices registered very low attendance.

Farmers’ demands legitimate, Centre should consider them: Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal requested the Centre to consider the demands of farmers protesting against the three farm laws, saying it will not be “bowing down” before anyone if it does so.

“We are celebrating the birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh. He made the supreme sacrifice for the freedom of the nation. He did not fight for freedom for a day when farmers have to sit on the streets and protest for a year to get their demands considered,” he said on the sidelines of an event to launch a tourism app for Delhi at the secretariat.

“The [central] government should consider their demands. Considering farmers’ demands will not be like bowing down in front of anyone as farmers are also people of our country,” Mr. Kejriwal said. — PTI

Bharat Bandh failed to evoke any response in Arunachal Pradesh, a senior police officer said in Itanagar.

All services, including public transport, banks and commercial establishments, were operating normally in the frontier State, he said.

There have been no protests and life remained normal in the state capital, Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) Superintendent of Police (SP) Jimmy Chiram said.

There was no impact of the bandh in other parts of the State as well, a senior government official said, adding, the State government has taken enough precautions to prevent any untoward incident during the day.

Government offices, private establishments, educational institutions remained open, while banks, post offices worked normally, the SP said. — PTI

Bharat Bandh fails to evoke response in Assam

Assam remained unaffected by the Bharat Bandh as public transport operated as usual, markets were open and offices registered usual attendance.

The Opposition Congress, which supported the bandh, did not organise any protest programme in the State.

In Guwahati, members of the SUCI (Communist) took out a protest rally in the morning, raising slogans against the three farm laws. They were detained by the police near the Ulubari point.

There were no reports of any other protest or demonstration from across the State.

Congress State president Bhupen Bora urged the people to come out on the streets in support of the bandh, but party workers were missing.

The Raijor Dal and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) also extended their support to the bandh. — PTI

BJP MP G.V.L. Narasimha Rao tweeted on Monday that the support extended by YSR Congress (YSRC) and TDP to the Bharat bandh called in protest against the three farm laws, which they endorsed in the Parliament, exposed their double-standards.

He pointed out that the YSRCP and TDP backed the farm laws wherein a slew of reforms were envisaged to improve the lot of farmers. Commercial establishments and local transport were operating as usual in Mumbai on Monday and the city police also did not deploy an extra security force at key junctions and roads in the wake of the Bharat Bandh called by farmer unions against the Centre’s three agri laws, officials said.

Congress workers, holding placards, assembled at some places like Andheri and Jogeshwari and shouted slogans against the farm bills, but other than that there was no impact of the bandh in the city so far. –PTI

Bharat Bandh calls evokes mixed response in Telangana

TSRTC buses, cab services, auto-rickshaw and other transport services were plying on the road as usual. However, the movement of people was curtailed largely due to incessant downpour due to the Gulab cyclone in the Bay of Bengal.

Despite calls given by various trade unions in the city and across the State, all commercial establishments and business houses were operating normally. Political parties and farmers unions who supported the bandh call were also not to be seen enforcing strict compliance with the call. Thanks to the inclement weather, the police also did not deploy much force anticipating a lacklustre turnout. However, several teams deployed around the Assembly in view of the ongoing monsoon session. “We anticipated there won’t be much response to the call in the State, so did not deploy forces,” a senior officer said. – Abhinay Deshpande

Farmers block highways at many places in Punjab

Farmers on Monday blocked highways and other roads at many places in Punjab, where the ruling Congress said it firmly stands by the farm unions’ call for Bharat Bandh against the Centre’s three agri laws.

In neighbouring Haryana too, there were reports of protesters blocking some highways, including in Sirsa, Fatehabad and Kurukshetra.

There were also reports of farmers squatting on rail tracks at a few places in the two states.

In Punjab, a complete shutdown was observed at several places, including Moga, where farmers blocked the Moga-Ferozepur and Moga-Ludhiana National Highways. – PTI

Normal life affected in Wayanad

Normal life in the district was affected by the dawn to dusk hartal called by the Joint Committee of Trade Unions on Monday in the state to express solidarity with the farmers on agitation against the agricultural reforms introduced by the BJP-led government at the Centre.

Attendance was very low in government offices and financial institutions. Only nine out of the 138 employees turned up for the duty at the Collectorate here, Additional District Magistrate, N.I. Shaju said.

While the KSRTC and private buses as well as taxis were stayed off the road , people were seen riding two wheelers , private vehicles.

The shops and business establishments were closed the district as the merchants associations have also expressed solidarity with the protest. – E.M. Manoj

Heavy rain in A.P. dampens ‘Bharat Bandh’

Heavy to very heavy rain since the wee hours of Monday dampened the ‘Bharat Bandh’ in Andhra Pradesh. Many non-NDA parties have extended support to the nationwide 10-hour strike on Monday called by farmers protesting against the three agri laws under the aegis of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM).

In AP, the YSR Congress government lent support to the bandh and suspended RTC bus services and declared holiday for schools on Monday.

The main opposition Telugu Desam also supported the bandh, along with the Congress and the Left parties. However, some places in the State did witness rallies supporting the bandh. Parts of Delhi witness traffic snarls due to road closures, diversions

Parts of the national capital witnessed traffic snarls on Monday morning as police closed some key roads to prevent any untoward incident during the Bharat Bandh called by farm unions against the Centre’s three farm laws.

The Delhi Police has increased security checks at its border points which led to the slowing down of traffic and it informed commuters about road closures and traffic snarls on Twitter.

According to police, roads around the historic Red Fort as well as the dual carriageway at Ghazipur border were closed for traffic. – PTI

Hartal near total in Kochi

The dawn-to-dusk “bandh’ on Monday in support of the all-India lockdown under the aegis of the farmers’ collective against the Union govermnets’ farm laws, backed by various political parties, labour and trade unions, found its echo in Kerala with public transport coming to a standstill even as heavy rains lashed the district from early hours on Monday.

Schools and colleges are closed and no public transport vehicles are visible on highways. There are a few private vehicles on the roads, mostly two-wheelers. Hotels and business establishments are closed. The district has also seen about six to eight mms of rain per hour throughout the day on Monday, causing a big barrier to movement of people and vehicles.

Kerala State Transport Corporation schedules have been cancelled in the district. Sources in KSRTC Aluva depot, one of the busiest in the state, said none of the 37 schedules operated on Monday on account of the lockdown. – K.A. Martin

Meanwhile, a few private vehicles could be spotted on the road. The long-haul services run by the Kerala State Road Transport corporation wound up operation by Sunday midnight. The dawn-to-dusk hartal backed by Left Democratic Front (LDF) and United Democratic Front (UDF) has been near-total in Thiruvananthapuram during the early hours of September 27.

The hartal that was announced in response to a call for a nationwide bandh by Samyukt Kisan Morcha has remained peaceful with no untoward incident being reported from any part of the district thus far.

While public transport vehicles remained off the roads, few taxis, auto-rickshaws and private vehicles could be seen in various parts of the capital city. Delhi Police tightens security at border points

The Delhi Police has beefed up security in border areas of the national capital in view of the Bharat Bandh called by farmer unions against the Centre’s three agri laws on Monday. A senior police officer said adequate security arrangements have been made to maintain the law an order situation and prevent any untoward incident in the national capital during the bandh.

‘Bharat bandh’ today will be historic, says Bharatiya Kisan Union

The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) has described the increase in purchase price of sugarcane by the Uttar Pradesh government as a “cruel joke” and said Monday’s ‘Bharat bandh’ would be “historic”. “Yet another promise of the BJP government proved to be just a ‘jumla’,” said BKU national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait.

Describing the ₹25 per quintal hike as a strike “on the interests of farmers”, Mr. Tikait said farmers of western Uttar Pradesh would participate in the bandh called by Samyukta Kisan Morcha with renewed vigour and it would be a “historic” event.

Jaisalmer is where you need to journey. The city of Jaisalmer also acts as the guard to western Rajasthan (and India’s) frontier. This 'Golden City’ is located close to the Pakistan border and in close proximity to the Thar Desert. The city’s most prominent landmark is the Jaisalmer Fort, also called Sonar Qila (Golden Fort). Unlike most other forts in India, Jaisalmer Fort is not just a tourist attraction. It houses shops, hotels and ancient havelis (homes) where generations continue to live.

Jaisalmer traces its inception to the 12th century. History tells us of Rawal Jaisal, the eldest heir of the Rawal of Deoraj, was passed over for the throne of Lodurva and a younger half-brother was crowned king. Rawal Jaisal went looking for a new location to set up his capital when he came across sage Eesul. The sage told him about Krishna’s prophecy which said that a descendant of his Yaduvanshi clan would found a new kingdom at this same spot. It was in 1156 that Rawal Jaisal constructed a mud fort, named it Jaisalmer after himself and declared it his capital.

Famous 19 Places To Visit In Jaisalmer :-

AMAR SAGAR LAKE :-

Amar Sagar Lake, located about 7 km towards the western outskirts of Jaisalmer, is a lake cum oasis lying adjacent to the Amar Singh Palace. The palace itself was built in the 17 th century. The complex that includes the palace and the lake is also home to several ponds and wells, along with an old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Numerous figureheads of animals carved in stone surround the lake, and according to legends, these carved figureheads are supposed to be protectors of the royal family. At one end, there are pavilions with stairs that lead down to the lake; while at the other end is a beautiful, aesthetically carved Jain temple. A peaceful and tranquil place, the Amar Sagar Lake is yet another spot in Jaisalmer where you have an opportunity to watch a gorgeous sunset.

TANOT MATA TEMPLE :-

Some 120 kilometres away from Jaisalmer is the Tanot Mata Temple. Tanot Mata is considered to be a reincarnation of Goddess Hinglaj. There are many stories of how during the 1965 India-Pakistan war, Tanot was under heavy attack and shelling. However, none of the shells or bombs fired at the temple exploded. This reaffirmed people’s faith that Goddess the temple. Post the war, the Border Security Force (BSF) rebuilt the temple and today, the temple is managed by a BSF Trust.

BADA BAGH :-

About 6 kilometres to the north of Jaisalmer lies Bada Bagh, also called Barabagh (literally Big Garden). This garden complex houses chhatris or royal cenotaphs of the Maharajas of Jaisalmer state, including that of Jai Singh II. The location of the garden is such that it offers wonderful sunset vistas to tourists.

JAIN TEMPLES OF JAISALMER :-

The Jain Temples located inside the Jaisalmer Fort date back to the 12th and 15th centuries. The temples are dedicated to Rikhabdevji and Shambhavdevji, famous Jain hermits known as 'Tirthankars' (wise teachers who taught people how to attain nirvana). Like all other structures in Jaisalmer, the temples are carved out of yellow sandstone. They have been built in the famed Dilwara style which is known for its beautiful architecture.

GADISAR LAKE :-

Gadisar Lake was constructed in the 14th century by Maharawal Gadsi Singh to meet the water needs of his arid lands. Considering its importance, many small temples and shrines were constructed around it, transforming it into a pilgrimage centre and a tourist attraction.

PATWON KI HAVELI :-

Among the largest and the most elaborately carved havelis in Jaisalmer, this five-storey structure sits proudly in a narrow street. While the haveli has lost some of its early glory, a few paintings and mirror work art can still be seen on the inside walls.

MANDIR PALACE :-

The five-storeyed majesty of the Badal Mahal (Cloud Palace) is further enhanced by its pagoda-like Tazia Tower. Each floor of the palace has an intricately carved balcony. The Badal Palace owes its beauty to the skills of Muslim craftsmen who moulded the tower in the shape of a Tazia (a float that’s part of the procession of Muharram).

NATHMAL JI KI HAVELI :-

Two architect brothers built Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli in the 19th century. They worked on the haveli from two sides and the outcome is a beautiful blend of the symmetrical construction. Miniature style paintings and mighty tuskers carved out of yellow sandstone are used for decoration.

SALIM SINGH KI HAVELI :-

This haveli was built in the first half of the 18th century and a part of it is still occupied by descendants of the original residents. The high arched roof is supported by carved brackets designed in the shape of peacocks. Legend has it that there were two additional wooden storeys that made it match the Maharaja's palace in height, but he ordered for the upper level to be demolished.

JAISALMER GOVERNMENT MUSEUM :-

Established by the Department of Archaeology and Museums, it is a prime attraction for tourists visiting Jaisalmer. The most striking display is the trophy of Rajasthan‘s state bird Godawan (the great Indian bustard). Traditional household items, rock-cut crockery, jewellery and statues from the 7th and 9th century AD displayed here are remnants of the city’s rich cultural heritage.

JAISALMER FORT :-

The Jaisalmer Fort also goes by the name Sonar Quila (Golden Fort) as it rises from the desert itself and seems to become one with the golden hues of the sand. The setting sun adds its own magic and shrouds the fort with mystique. The fort is constructed in the classic style of the royals by local craftsmen. This fort is a world heritage site and forms an important plot point in one of Satyajit Ray’s famous Feluda stories and corresponding movie, Sonar Kela (The Golden Fortress).

DESERT NATIONAL PARK :-

The Desert National Park displays the best of the Thar desert’s ecosystem and its varied wildlife. The Park is formed of undulating sand dunes, jagged rocks, dense salt lake bottoms and inter-medial areas. Various species of animals such as black buck, chinkara and desert fox inhabit the Park. The highly endangered Great Indian Bustard, one of the world's heaviest flying birds, can also be seen here. In winter, the park hosts an incredible variety of migratory raptors such Himalayan and Eurasian Griffon Vultures, Eastern Imperial Eagle, and the Saker Falcon.

KULDHARA VILLAGE :-

The underlying history of Kuldhara has piqued the curiosity of one visitor too many, and makes it one of the most enigmatic destinations to visit in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The story has a beautiful daughter, an unscrupulous minister, scared villagers, an exodus in the middle of the night, and no idea where the villagers vanished. This is not the story of a movie, but the unfathomable legend that lies behind the abandoned village of Kuldhara. Located about 18 km from the city of Jaisalmer is this old town that was abandoned by its villagers in the 1800s. It was like the entire town vanished in the course of a single night. With about 85 villages full of people, it remains a mystery as to how no one saw them leave; in fact, even to this date, no one knows where all of them went either. The village remains uninhabited to the day, in the same state that the villagers had left it, hundreds of years ago. The location has become a major tourist destination as people from all over the world travel here to revel in the mysteries of the past. The desolate outline of Kuldhara etches a story in front of your eyes, if you are keen enough to read it!

JAISALMER WAR MUSEUM :-

“If you ate today, thank a farmer, and if you ate in peace, thank a soldier!” Our military and defense forces spend their days facing perils and hardships, so the citizens of India can sleep peacefully. While we all appreciate and hold respect for all they do for us, the Indian Army has commemorated the sacrifices of their soldiers in a beautiful display at this war museum, situated at the Jaisalmer military base. This exhibit is primarily to pay respect to all the soldiers who took part and lost their lives in the 1965 India-Pakistan war and the 1971 Longewala battle. A visit to this museum lets you see a number of captured tanks and other memorabilia from the battle, instilling a sense of immense pride in your country and its soldiers. The museum also features an audio-visual room where they screen movies about the battle. You can also see an interview with Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri who was a crucial part of the Longewala battle. In the video, he gives a detailed description of how the soldiers fought the Longewala battle.

The museum also has a war memorial replete with many war trophies and vintage equipment, along with tanks, guns, and military vehicles, murals of soldiers who lost their lives in the war, and weapons which were used during the same. Even the Air Force has given a Hunter aircraft, which was used during the Battle of Longewala in the 1971 Indo-Pak War, as a present to the museum. Located on the Jaisalmer-Jodhpur Highway, the museum has free entry, and holds a very important part of our country’s history. It is truly one of the places that you cannot afford to miss.

RAMDEVRA TEMPLE :-

Located 12 kilometres from Pokhran on the Jodhpur – Jaisalmer route lies Ramdevra Temple. While most people assume it is a temple dedicated Lord Ram, it is in fact, dedicated to renowned saint Baba Ramdevji. The temple marks the eternal resting place of Baba Ramdevji and is visited by people of all faiths. Between August and September, a large fair known as Ramdevra Fair is held here, and it attracts large numbers of devotees who sing devotional songs all night long.

LONGEWALA WAR MEMORIAL :-

One of the first major engagements in the Western sector during the Indo Pakistani War of 1971, the Battle of Laungewala is an inspiring tale of courage in the face of unconquerable odds. A shining example of the courage, bravery, and valor of the Indian soldiers, the Battle of Laungewala created history on 4 December, 1971, when about a hundred Indian defenders halted the advancing troops of about 2000 Pakistani soldiers and 60 tanks. To celebrate the grit and steely resolve of the Indian soldiers who stalled Pakistani forces from their aim of cutting deep into the Indian Territory, the Desert Corps at Laungewala have constructed the Laungewala Was Memorial. An inspiring destination, this war memorial commemorates the valor and the supreme sacrifice of our brave soldiers, instilling in you a sense of pride when you visit this site

AKAL WOOD FOSSIL PARK :-

Rajasthan is a treasure trove of history and historical artifacts, but one place in particular takes you beyond the ‘timeline of present’, right into the prehistoric Jurassic era. The Akal Wood Fossil Park is a 21-hectare preserved area that lies about 17 km from Jaisalmer, towards Barmer.180 million years ago, a forest used to stand where the park is today. The area was then submersed into the sea and the tree trunks were preserved in the form of fossils. With remnants of fallen and broken logs that date back to the pre-historic times, the park is an absolute must-visit attraction. Here, you can see large fossilized trunks from trees of different sizes that have been placed in corrugated iron shelters. There are about 25 numb trees, along with centuries-old fossils, and right at the entrance, you can also stroke a fossil of an ancient red-wood tree trunk. In the geological area that had only non-flowering trees, an entire forest comprising of huge trees was fossilized. The presence of these gigantic trees suggests that in the lower Jurassic age, the area had hot and humid climate that was able to support a luxuriant forest, as compared to the stark dry climate of today.

VYAS CHHATRI :-

Vyas Chhatri is one of the most beautiful examples of Rajasthani architecture. The total confirmed cases of COVID-19 across the world stand at 93.3 lakh, according to the Johns Hopkins University CSSE. This figure includes COVID-19 patients who have recovered and the overall global death toll which stands at 4.7 lakh.

Mamata orders extension of lockdown in West Bengal till 31 July

Amid spiralling COVID-19 cases in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced the extension of the lockdown till 31 July with the continuance of the existing relaxations. The ongoing lockdown was to end on 30 June.

West Bengal's tally of COVID-19 cases climbed to 15,173 with 445 fresh infections on Wednesday, while the death toll rose to 591 as 11 more people succumbed to the disease, health department officials said.

Coronavirus LATEST Updates: WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom yesterday said he expects the global COVID-19 case tally to reach one crore next week. Meanwhile, amid spiralling COVID-19 cases in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced the extension of the lockdown till 31 July with the continuance of the existing relaxations.

India on Wednesday recorded its highest single-day spike of 15,968 new COVID-19 cases and 465 fatalities, taking the nationwide tally to 4,56,183 and the toll from the novel coronavirus to 14,476, the Union health ministry said.

Given the rise in number of cases, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee ordered lockdown in the state to be extended till 31 July with relaxations continuing outside containment zones.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh administration said that it was mulling a stricter lockdown on weekends if there was a drastic rise in cases while Tamil Nadu re-introduced curbs on inter-district travel for six days.

Recovery rate reaches 56.71%

According to news agency PTI, India registered over 14,000 cases for the fifth day in a row with 2,65,648 infections (58 percent of India's current tally) been reported from 1 June till 24 June, with Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh remaining the top five contributors.

The number of active cases stands at 1,83,022, while 2,58,684 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, according to the figures updated by the ministry at 8 am on Wednesday.

"Thus, around 56.71 percent patients have recovered so far," an official said. The total number of confirmed cases include foreigners.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a cumulative total of 73,52,911 samples have been tested up to 23 June with 2,15,195 samples being tested on Tuesday.

Of the 465 new deaths reported till Wednesday morning, 248 were in Maharashtra, 68 in Delhi, 39 in Tamil Nadu, 26 in Gujarat, 19 in Uttar Pradesh, 11 in West Bengal, nine each in Rajasthan and Haryana, eight each in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, four each in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh, three in Telangana, two each in Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha and Uttarakhand. Kerala, Bihar and Puducherry have reported one COVID-19 fatality each.

Of the total 14,476 deaths reported so far, Maharashtra accounted for the highest with 6,531 fatalities, followed by Delhi with 2,301 deaths, Gujarat with 1,710, Tamil Nadu with 833, Uttar Pradesh with 588, West Bengal with 580, Madhya Pradesh with 525, Rajasthan with 365 and Telangana with 220 deaths.

Maharashtra has also reported the highest number of cases at 1,39,010, followed by Delhi at 66,602, Tamil Nadu at 64,603, Gujarat at 28,371, Uttar Pradesh at 18,893, Rajasthan at 15,627 and West Bengal at 14,728, showed the health ministry data. The number of COVID-19 cases has gone up to 12,261 in Madhya Pradesh, 11,520 in Haryana, 10,002 in Andhra Pradesh, 9,721 in Karnataka and 9,553 in Telangana.

"Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research," the ministry said, adding 8,141 cases are being reassigned to states.

Total lockdown in West Bengal's containment zones till 31 July

After an all-party meeting, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said that lockdown in the state had been extended till 31 July. There will be complete lockdown in only the containment zones, while elsewhere the relaxations allowed earlier will continue.

Banerjee said all educational institutions will remain shut till 31 July. Government offices will function in a "segregated manner" with 70 percent attendance on any given day. Metro and suburban train services will remain suspended.

Shopping malls, restaurants and other similar establishments had resumed services in Bengal on 8 June after a gap of over two months, with the state government allowing relaxations as part of 'Unlock-1', the first phase of a calibrated exit from the coronavirus lockdown across the country.

Places of worship and private offices were also allowed to open with reduced attendance.

The state registered 445 fresh infections and 11 deaths on Wednesday, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 15,173 and fatalities to 591.

In Tamil Nadu, which reported 2,865 new cases and 33 deaths, chief minister K Palaniswami said that the system of travelling without an e-pass in a zone comprising of many districts had been temporarily cancelled as officials said it made contact-tracing more difficult. People can now only travel within a district without a pass and inter-district bus services too have been withdrawn for six days.

The chief minister in a statement also said that rice ration card holders in Madurai will get the second round of Rs 1,000 cash assistance in view of the week-long complete lockdown enforced there from Wednesday to check rising cases.

Meanwhile, the Chandigarh administration said it was mulling imposing stricter restrictions on the weekends, like those imposed in Punjab. If there is a drastic rise in the number of cases or if the residents continue to violate social distancing norms, Chandigarh could opt for weekend closure of markets or curfew on weekends as has been done in Punjab and other states, PTI quoted an official release as saying.

Chandigarh has been witnessing a rise in the number of coronavirus cases. With six fatalities due to the infection, the city has reported 420 COVID cases so far.

However, in Mumbai, where the case count rose to 69,625 with 1,144 new cases, civic officials said that shops in municipal markets will now be allowed to operate on odd-even basis.

In a circular issued on Wednesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said shopkeepers will have to take adequate precautions to prevent the spread of the viral infection and only two people would be allowed to work inside each shop. However, eateries and hotels in these markets will continue to remain closed.

In order to speed up testing, the BMC said it will purchase one lakh antigen testing kits as part of its 'Mission Universal Testing'.

Delhi overtakes Mumbai as new response plan kicks in

Delhi overtook Mumbai as the worst-hit city on Wednesday after COVID-19 cases soared by 3,788 to touch 70,390.

The National Capital reported 64 fatalities in the last 24 hours, the Delhi health department bulletin said, pushing the toll to 2,301.

The updated figures came even as the state government announced a new COVID-19 response plan, which includes screening every house in containment zones till 30 June and in the National Capital by 6 July, a News18 report said. Additionally, a serological survey will be conducted with 2o,ooo tests across all districts and age groups, reported PTI.

Contact tracing will be stepped up by the use of Aarogya Setu app coupled with an IT-driven tool, under the new plan.

The state government also roped in Army Medical Corps (AMC) to manage healthcare at the Railways' COVID-19 care centre at the Shakur Basti station where the first two patients were put up in isolation coaches.

In the meantime, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police(ITBP) took over a 10,000-bed capacity centre in Delhi for coronavirus patients, officials said.

A team of officials from the border guarding force visited the Radha Soami Beas facility and held discussions with the Delhi government and other stakeholders who will be partners in running the centre, an ITBP officer said

New cases in Maharashtra, Kerala

Many states including Maharashtra, Kerala and Rajasthan reported an increase in cases.

As many as 3,890 new COVID-19 cases were registered in Maharashtra on Wednesday, taking the count of patients to 1,42,900, a health department bulletin said. The state also reported 208 fatalities, taking the toll to 6,739.

As many as 572 new coronavirus positive cases and 25 deaths were reported in Gujarat, taking the overall case count to 29,001 including toll to 1,736 deaths, reported ANI, quoting the state health department.

Kerala reported the highest single-day spike of 152 cases pushing the infection count to 3,603, officials said.

Rajasthan registered 10 deaths and 382 new patients on Wednesday, reported ANI, quoting the state health department. The total number of cases in the state climbed to 16,009 and the toll rose to 375.

ICMR expands testing criterion

Day after announcing the 1,000th COVID-19 testing laboratory in the country, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Wednesday said that "access to testing still remains a huge challenge in a large country like India".

"There is a definite need to increase the outreach of testing by introducing rapid point of care diagnostic tests," the ICMR noted in its advisory issued late on Tuesday.

Expanding the testing criterion for coronavirus, the ICMR said it should be made widely available to all symptomatic individuals across the country.

"Since test, track and treat' is the only way to prevent the spread of the infection and save lives, it's imperative that testing should be made widely available to all symptomatic individuals in every part of the country and contact tracing mechanisms for containment of infection are further strengthened," it said in an advisory on 'Newer Additional Strategies for COVID-19 Testing' .

The apex health research body has also advised authorities to enable all government and private hospitals, offices and public sector units to perform antibody-based COVID-19 testing for surveillance to help allay fears and anxiety of healthcare workers and office employees.

The earlier advisories on rapid antibody testing focused only on testing in clusters (containment zones), large migration gatherings/evacuees centers and testing of symptomatic ILI individuals at facility level.

Besides, the ICMR also recommended deployment of rapid antigen detection tests for COVID-19 in combination with RT-PCR tests in all containment zones, all central and state government medical colleges and government hospitals, all private hospitals approved by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare (NABH), all NABL-accredited and ICMR approved private labs, for COVID-19 testing.

"ICMR advises all state governments, public and private institutions concerned to take required steps to scale up testing for COVID-19 by deploying combination of various tests as advised," the advisory added.

World Crisis: Increasing Depression During Work from Home in COVID-19 Pandemic

Today in almost every corner of the world COVID-19 has established its kingdom. Numerous people have caught the virus (we now have more than 2 million cases worldwide), more than 100k people have died and there is no stoppage on the spread of this deadly Virus. This has created a situation of chaos all around the globe, which has enforced the government to take strict actions in order to control the widespread disease. This has resulted in countrywide lockdowns and curfews.

In this situation of quarantine most of the Private Organizations have opted in for Work from home for their employees so as to keep the business functional in accordance with the health and life of their employees. It is literally a hard truth that productivity and pace of doing the work decreases while working from home on laptops but nonetheless this was the only option which could save the business of various firms.

In accordance with the lower curves of profits, private firm have started to push their employees to work more harder than usual and go extra miles. there are various industries where business is on the verge of shut e.g. Hotels, Tourism etc. people from calling jobs have less work, people from sales have to work harder to crack the deal and people from other departments are struggling too. Though the myth of working from home is very delightful because obviously you are in your home with your parents and relatives but recent stats have showed that majority of the population is suffering or on the verge of mental illness or depression.

While working from home certain problems are being faced by employees like working on small screens ( those who don’t have full fledge systems at their home ) , working for more hours than usual ( regular extension of shifts due to business needs ) , constant environment as people are sitting at same place for many days , less recreational activities and less movement due to refrain from moving out during lockdown , socialization have decreased on lively basis and have increased on web ( people are using cellphones day and night ) which results in various health related problems , social distancing is causing trouble for many as now there is almost negligible interaction among people.

People are showing the signs of stress due to certain reasons like job security, handling the needs of their family, dealing with more than usual work, salary cuts, disturbing work life balance etc. Therefore, more and more people are becoming the victim of this pandemic situation and are unable to cope up with the kind of pressure it has created on mankind which results in mental illness, anxiety, negativity and depression among people. This has resulted in reduction of productivity in employees. People have lost the interest in the work which earlier they used to do with full enthusiasm, be it their office work, be it their hobbies, be it their daily routine work. while becoming the victim of stress and depression few of the people have started to skip their daily meals too and hence situations are becoming adverse.

As the situation is not so good as COVID-19 is affecting our economy as well as health, we should be prepared for the worse as things will get more worse before they become better.

Economy has fallen since the arrival of this virus and there is no way to turn this down. People are donating the fund for relief and government is cutting the salary of government employees. Many are becoming homeless and many are becoming jobless, hunger and shelter is becoming the new reason for death now. No doubt that situation is tough and hence employees working from home are taking stress and becoming the victim of depression due to certain fear factors as explained above. There should be a process to resolve this issue before it becomes chaotic.

To keep the mental health stable people should focus on positive side rather than encompassing their energy in negativity. Though majority of the situation is not so positive still there are certain steps which people can take , like talking with friends once a day , talking with parents at least an hour a day , discuss your problems and issues with someone with whom you can share , try to learn new things ( things which you wanted to do since long ) , try to brush up your skills , try to develop new good habit ( like waking up early ), never skip your meal no matter what the situation is ( for current situation it is a real necessity to keep your immunity in a good state ) , try to do meditation and yoga in the morning if possible , stop taking unwanted stress and believe yourself , try to take good sleep daily so as to heal your cells to prepare for next morning. The best thing we as a human being can do is to provide helping hands to those who are in need.

So, let’s get prepared to handle this pandemic together and let us all promise that together we will defeat this virus too.

Madhya Pradesh polls: Can Congress' saffron pitch defeat Shivraj Singh Chouhan?

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is seeing an unlikely challenge from the Congress ahead of the assembly polls, likely later this year.

A brigade of state Congress leaders, led by “Shiv bhakt” Rahul Gandhi, has promised gaushalas, or cow shelters, in every gram panchayat. They have also pledged to redevelop the “Ram Van Gaman Path”, a mythical route taken by Lord Rama during his 14-year exile, as narrated in Valmiki’s Ramayana.

Early this week, a number of hoardings showing Rahul Gandhi as a worshipper of Lord Shiva, in the backdrop of Kailash-Mansarovar, were seen at various places in Bhopal. The Congress president had sought the blessings of Hindu priests in the city’s Lalghati Square before embarking on an 18-km roadshow. “Shiv bhakt Rahul Gandhi ka jhilon ki nagri Bhopal mein swagat hai (Devotee of Lord Shiva, Rahul Gandhi, is welcome to the city of lakes, Bhopal),” reads one such hoarding. Rahul Gandhi had just returned from a 12-day pilgrimage to Kailash-Mansarovar, a sacred place for the Hindus.
