Irri - is a Dothraki handmaid to Daenerys Targaryen. Irri was born to a khal of a khalasar. It was destroyed by Khal Drogo, and she was enslaved. Irri, Doreah, and Jhiqui are given to Daenerys Targaryen by Viserys Targaryen as wedding gifts to serve as her handmaids. She is given to Daenerys to teach her how to ride horses in the Dothraki style She stays with Daenerys, even after the death of Khal Drogo and the disintegration of his khalasar.

Doreah -is a Lysene handmaid to Daenerys Targaryen. Magister Illyrio Mopatis found Doreah in a pleasure house in Lys. Viserys Targaryen bedded her while he was a guest at Illyrio's manse. Illyrio payed the House Orthys good coin for her to be given to them. Viserys Targaryen is usually kinder to Doreah than to Daenerys's Dothraki handmaids, and Daenerys has the Lyseni sew a fine sandsilk cloak for her brother. While sick during the trip to Qarth, Doreah recovers. Eventually becomes part of Daenerys court and a confidante of many women who wish to know secrets of pleasure.

Ezzara - is a Ghiscari priestess of Meereen. She is a Blue Grace. Ezzara treats the first victim of the bloody flux at Meereen, although the man dies within an hour of arrival. Ezzara accompanies Galazza Galare, the Green Grace, along with two other Blue Graces, to the Great Pyramid of Meereen to explain to Queen Daenerys Targaryen the symptoms of the disease and its possible spread in Meereen. Not trusting the Maesters, Ezzara travels with Queen Daenerys and becomes the main source of medical issues.

Sariah - Originally from Myr, she is a Mereen exotic dancer, part of Hizdahr zo Loraq court and a favorite of him of sorts, often finding herself in his bed. While not a slave, when he is killed, Sariah chooses to follow Daenerys to the new continent, finding no real home in Mereen or Myr as she does not remember her home. Sariah is multilingual and often helps with translations and such. She also helps make the queen new dresses in the style of her House based on books and recallings of the old Valyrian Households.

Kaizina Nika Elizan - of the New Lorath Empire, East of Braavos. Called the Empress of the East Shivering Sea. With the help of a mercenary company and the people, she gained control of the seat of council to call upon one ruler for Lorath and reclaimed the Ibbish Isles and Morath, a mining Lorathian colony and Saath, taking the mayority of the East of the Shivering Sea with Braavos help, wanting less taxes by having only one tax to be pay to one person. Daenerys accepted Nika's invitation to her coronation and Nika will attend her own in turn, and wishes for commerce and alliances to be made once Westeros regains peace.

Cahira of Lys - Lysani warrior, leader of a legion given to Daenerys Targaryen by Prince Lysandro, Cahira was second in command in the Orthys household when it came to training and now her direct order is to train women and help them defend themselves as well serve the Queen on her Conquest. Cahira is part of a deal made to stablish Lysani settlements on Westeros.

  Kira Kandaq - House of Kandaq Heir, attendant to Queen Daenerys in Mereen as her famiyl rises to power. The House is supposedly less hostile to the rule of Daenerys Targaryen. Skahaz mo Kandaq, known as the Shavepate, serves as one of her Meereenese advisors. The House before Daenerys came was considered a lesser House and its influence has grown due to their service to Daenerys. The house are considered traitors by the Sons of the Harpy. She becomes part of her emboy and court.

Val of the Free Folk - later on Val Weirwood, is a member of the free folk. She is the sister of Dalla, the wife of Mance Rayder. Resourceful, fast and quick witted, she is often called princess by the South and she takes advantage of this to get some attention to raise her nephew. She has a relationship with Jon Snow who she has been claiming as her own for a while and she is often found with Daenerys teaching her some Northern costumes as well the simple pleasure of gossiping and being women.

Princess Myrcella Baratheon - After her return from Dorne, Myrcella becomes a political player in the game, acting as the ruler of the kingdom as regent until Daenerys comes along. Myrcella becomes a friend and an ally and Myrcella is the one who shows that political alliances through marriage, while not ideal, is often the way to make a kingdom united, like Queen Alysanne and Queen Rhaenys did before them. Myrcella is witted even despite her murder attempt in the queenmaker plot and still beloved by the kingdom. She is often considered Daenerys heir, before Daenerys gets one of her own. Cella eventually finds friendship in Dany's handmaidens and her own cousin as well love in Aegon, who she weds.

BREAKERS OF CHAINS

I love how GRRM mocks some of his characters...

And so it came to pass. This time the prey proved to be a pair of galleys, long and sleek and fast. Ralf the Limper was the first to sight them, but they soon outdistanced Woe and Forlorn Hope, so Victarion sent Iron Wing, Sparrowhawk, and Kraken's Kiss to run them down. He had no swifter ships than those three. The pursuit lasted the best part of the day, but in the end both galleys were boarded and taken, after brief but brutal fights. They had been running empty, Victarion learned, making for New Ghis to load supplies and weapons for the Ghiscari legions encamped before Meereen … and to bring fresh legionaries to the war, to replace all the men who'd died. "Men slain in battle?" asked Victarion. The crews of the galleys denied it; the deaths were from a bloody flux. The pale mare, they called it. And like the captain of the Ghiscari Dawn, the captains of the galleys repeated the lie that Daenerys Targaryen was dead.

"Give her a kiss for me in whatever hell you find her," Victarion said. He called for his axe and took their heads off there and then. Afterward he put their crews to death as well, saving only the slaves chained to the oars. He broke their chains himself and told them they were now free men and would have the privilege of rowing for the Iron Fleet, an honor that every boy in the Iron Islands dreamed of growing up. "The dragon queen frees slaves and so do I," he proclaimed.

The galleys he renamed Ghost and Shade. "For I mean them to return and haunt these Yunkishmen," he told the dusky woman that night after he had taken his pleasure of her. They were close now, and growing closer every day. "We will fall upon them like a thunderbolt," he said, as he squeezed the woman's breast. He wondered if this was how his brother Aeron felt when the Drowned God spoke to him. He could almost hear the god's voice welling up from the depths of the sea. You shall serve me well, my captain, the waves seemed to say. It was for this I made you.

The World Of Ice And Fire: The Fall of Old Ghis (Revised 11/24/22)

Warning, Spoilers Ahead…

   Old Ghis and Valyria waged five “great wars”. The fifth war was the final war as the forces of Valyria razed Old Ghis: “The colossal pyramids and temples and homes were given over to dragonflame. The fields were sown with salt, lime, and skulls. Many of the Ghiscari were slain, and still others were enslaved and died laboring for their conquerors. Thus the Ghiscari became but another part of the new Valyrian empire, and in time they forgot the tongue that Grazdan spoke, learning instead High Valyrian.”

Old Ghis fell hard but props for being Valyria’s most persistent foe. Five times is four more times than anyone else has fought Valyria and survived.

We’re not given any indication of the time span between the wars – years, decades, centuries? How long did each war last? Did Old Ghis come close to winning the last war and did that cause the razing of the country? What caused the wars – was it as simple as a rising empire clashing with an existing empire?

Yandel notes the remains of Old Ghis are a “paltry thing” – “a few cities clinging like sores to Slaver’s Bay and another that pretends to be Old Ghis come again.”

The cities of Slaver’s Bay wasted no time re-governing themselves after the Doom of Valyria. Their main income/export is the purchasing and breeding of slaves.

A rhyme states “Bricks and blood built Astapor, and bricks and blood her people”, referring to the slave labor.  Astapor is ruled by the Good Masters and the Unsullied are their most famous creation.

Yunaki, the yellow city, is ruled by the Wise Masters and specialize in sex slaves.

Mereen is the most formidable of the cities and specializes in fighting slaves (Roman gladiators). The cities contain fighting pits for the slaves to battle in.

Astapor, Yunaki, and Mereen pay tribute to khalasars but also purchase numerous slaves from the Dothraki.

New Ghis is the smallest and newest of the Slaver’s Bay cities. New Ghis has iron legions, a pale imitation of Old Ghis’s legions. At least the members of the iron legions are free men instead of slaves.

In summary: Slaver’s Bay is disgusting.

about rhaeyar uncle’s sellsword company: they’re called “titans of valyria”, or “titans” for short. they’re pretty much the asoif world’s version of the spartan army. rhaeyar’s uncle, drako, used to serve as a commander under the highborn ghiscari in charge with the ghiscari iron legions. after the death of said ghiscari, drako took the soldiers under his care with him west, refusing to work any longer under slavers. unlike the unsullied, the iron legions are free men. drako only managed to convince them to desert because he had known most of them since they could walk. he also took with him a handful of unsullied. (those young enough to be reformed.) this all angered the sons of the harpy, but the loss was considered so insignificant they didn’t even bother with a retaliation. drako established his own company out of the soldiers he had. today, the titans find jobs in the free cities. they’re often hired to guard walls or bolster a city’s defense during a siege. drako never accepts jobs where the titans is to be the offensive party. no raids and no fighting where the risk of civilian death is too high.

Dany antis are so desperate to find social commentary in Dany's story against Dany, that they miss the blatant social commentary that is already present. One of the things that they are desperate to find, and desperate for the story to validate them, is the idea that Dany is actually a slaver. They want Dany's Slaver's Bay arc to end up some kind of commentary on Dany's hypocrisy, some kind of social commentary on how certain politicians or liberators use the ideals of freedom to present themselves as saviors when in fact they are just selfish people who only care about self-promotion and their own power and self-interest. But the thing is… GRRM IS doing that commentary! It just isn't with Dany:

"Great Cleon sought only to strike down the vile slavers of Yunkai."

"Great Cleon is a slaver himself." - Daenerys III ADWD

While Dany antis are trying to distort passages and screaming that Dany is actually a slaver, GRRM's actual social commentary is being made through the character of Cleon. He claims to be a freedom fighter who only wants to destroy the vile slavers, but the fact is that he took power from the council for his own self-interest, and enslaved the highborn boys. GRRM makes Dany herself point out his hypocrisy. Another character that GRRM uses to make the same commentary is Victarion:

Victarion says that the slaves are "free", but forces them to work for him. That's GRRM once again making the same commentary, through the villains of this storyline.

Daenerys has never forced anyone to work for her (and I've already written long metas explaining why the distortions that Dany antis make to say otherwise are not true), but Dany antis are so desperate to find social and political commentary in Dany's story against Dany, that they miss the blatant social and political commentary that GRRM is actually doing, against Dany's enemies.

Another social and political commentary that Dany antis miss in their desperation to demonize Dany is the way Dany's enemies demonize her:

"Sweet?" Qavo laughed. "If even half the stories coming back from Slaver's Bay are true, this child is a monster. They say that she is bloodthirsty, that those who speak against her are impaled on spikes to die lingering deaths. They say she is a sorceress who feeds her dragons on the flesh of newborn babes, an oathbreaker who mocks the gods, breaks truces, threatens envoys, and turns on those who have served her loyally. They say her lust cannot be sated, that she mates with men, women, eunuchs, even dogs and children, and woe betide the lover who fails to satisfy her. She gives her body to men to take their souls in thrall." - Tyrion VI ADWD

Wed her or fight her; either way, I will face her soon. The more Quentyn heard of Daenerys Targaryen, the more he feared that meeting. The Yunkai'i claimed that she fed her dragons on human flesh and bathed in the blood of virgins to keep her skin smooth and supple. Beans laughed at that but relished the tales of the silver queen's promiscuity. "One of her captains comes of a line where the men have foot-long members," he told them, "but even he's not big enough for her. She rode with the Dothraki and grew accustomed to being fucked by stallions, so now no man can fill her." And Books, the clever Volantene swordsman who always seemed to have his nose poked in some crumbly scroll, thought the dragon queen both murderous and mad. "Her khal killed her brother to make her queen. Then she killed her khal to make herself khaleesi. She practices blood sacrifice, lies as easily as she breathes, turns against her own on a whim. She's broken truces, tortured envoys … her father was mad too. It runs in the blood." - The Windblown ADWD

The slavers spread slanders about how promiscuous and monstrous Dany is, and this is a commentary on two things: how women in power are treated (which is made more clear when you consider she is demonized for her sexuality), and how the slavers want to vilify a person that goes against their own interests and wants to free their slaves. But Dany antis completely miss this commentary. They don't realize that by demonizing Daenerys, by wanting her to be this evil monstrous villain, to be mad, they are making the social and political commentary that GRRM is actually making void.

Or how about the copious commentaries on the compromise with the slavers:

The girl spoke the Common Tongue well, for one who had never been to Westeros. No older than ten, she had the round flat face, dusky skin, and golden eyes of Naath. The Peaceful People, her folk were called. All agreed that they made the best slaves. - Daenerys III ASOS

“There may be another choice. The Yunkai'i can be persuaded to allow all your freedmen to remain free, I believe, if Your Worship will agree that the Yellow City may trade and train slaves unmolested from this day forth. No more blood need flow.”

“Save for the blood of those slaves that the Yunkai'i will trade and train,” Dany said, but she recognized the truth in his words even so. It may be that is the best end we can hope for. – Daenerys IV ADWD

All of the entertainers were slaves. That had been part of the peace, that slaveowners be allowed the right to bring their chattels into Meereen without fear of having them freed. In return the Yunkai'i had promised to respect the rights and liberties of the former slaves that Dany had freed. A fair bargain, Hizdahr said, but the taste it left in the queen's mouth was foul. She drank another cup of wine to wash it out.

"If it please you, Yurkhaz will be pleased to give us the singers, I do not doubt," her noble husband said. "A gift to seal our peace, an ornament to our court."

He will give us these castrati, Dany thought, and then he will march home and make some more. The world is full of boys. - Daenerys VIII ADWD

Four hours later, they emerged again as man and wife, bound together wrist and ankle with chains of yellow gold. - Daenerys VII ADWD

Dany antis completely miss this commentary, on how making peace with slavers is not a good choice, of how this will just mean more blood (of the slaves) will flow, because they want to paint Daenerys as "evil" for being unsatisfied with the peace and choosing war at the end of ADWD.

Or how about the class commentary in Dany's story?

"Your Grace has not asked for my counsel," said Skahaz Shavepate, "but I say that blood must pay for blood. Take one man from each of the families I have named and kill him. The next time one of yours is slain, take two from each great House and kill them both. There will not be a third murder."

Reznak squealed in distress. "Noooo … gentle queen, such savagery would bring down the ire of the gods. We will find the murderers, I promise you, and when we do they will prove to be baseborn filth, you shall see." - Daenerys I ADWD

The nobility is the one behind the killings in Meereen, and then they use their own class prejudice and feeling of superiority to say that the murderers could only be "baseborn filth". But Dany antis completely miss this in favor of empathizing with the slavers.

The thing is, Dany antis are desperate for Dany to be some big social and political commentary on the dangers and hypocrisy of false saviors. But in this desperation to see this social and political commentary that they want, they miss the fact that GRRM is already doing plenty of political and social commentary, but it's not against Dany. This story already has plenty of social and political commentary, it's just not the kind of commentary that the Dany antis want. And in fact, making Dany a villain would only make much of the social and political commentary that GRRM carefully wrote void.

Rumors of dragons had spread through parts of Essos with growing interest. Words whispered of a Khaleesi having taken victory in Qarth. Warlocks burned with dragonfire, legion of Unsullied taken from Astapor, Yunkai fallen and Meereen taken. All by a single silver-haired woman with rumor of dragons at her call.

One by one with each victory tale of slaves freed and slavers punished was heard even so far as the Shadow and beyond. On the plains of the Jogos Nhai whispers between the various clan’s and their moonsingers of the dragons fire that trailed the sky an omen. Shadowbinders in Asshai and the red priests of R’hllor all spoke of the coming of Azor Ahai.

Deep in the east, near the Hidden Sea the whispers had traveled over the Mountains of Mourn to fall upon curious ears. Far to long had such ears remained hidden in the shadow, far to long had one wished to step into the light, escaping from the cage of secrecy. Thoughts of revival strong in mind, but to bring back what was lost one must no longer remain hidden.

Amethyst hues fixed upon the sky watching with brief lament as the large shadow passed over. It was safer to travel upon zorse than it was by normal means for him. The ride would be long and far but always the shadow passed over during the night gentle reminder that should he have need it would be there.

The gates of Meereen rose high, stench of the bay thick in the air mixing with the heat of the land. Perspiration forming upon his body at the humidity of it, so unlike his home, the air was thick like a moist blanket and the sounds and smells of this new land overwhelming. He took in the grandeur of colored bricks and the pyramids, looking up at the harpys upon the walls their mouths open in deadly scream.

Passing through the gates he noted the watchful eyes of Unsullied posted and Dothraki about. He urged the zorse onward though weaving through the streets towards the Great Pyramid. He wanted to see for himself if it were true, if there was indeed a Mother of Dragons. A smirk on his lips at the title, one of many it seemed this queen had attained. He wondered did she wear bells in her hair as her Dothraki did?

Finding himself before the Great Pyramid he left his mount with a child, a golden coin placed in it’s hand to keep the creature safe while he sought audience. Whether or not the boy would keep his word he did not know but he had coin enough for new mount if need be. It would not be hard to replace the creature.

A steward held hand up as he entered. It seemed there were many that sought audience from noble person to commoner, rich and poor the crowd stood before great doors to the throne room. There were some with what looked like charred bones in sacks others distraught looking shepherds.

He could feel eyes upon him though, his pale hair and amethyst gaze perhaps rarity here. Attention turned to someone who spoke Valyrian to him, the guttural growl of the Ghiscari mixed in bastardizing the sounds. His own dialect far older, archaic now yet pure.

“I am Lysander Balaur and I’ve come to see the Dragon Queen”, he said simply as his turn had come.

A cheatsheet of Dany's political actions in ADWD

I think this might come in handy for Dany fans. I've analyzed most of these before here and here.

ADWD Daenerys I

Dany finds out that her first Unsullied, Stalwart Shield, was murdered by the Sons. She refuses to forget his name, gives him a proper burial, promises to pay a lot for whoever gives information about his murderer, sends men to the Temple of the Graces to ask if any man with a sword wound came (because Stalwart Shield's killers swarmed him and he probably wounded some of them), asks butchers and herdsmen about who had been gelding goats recently (because Stalwart Shield's killers forced the genitals of a goat down his throat), forbids other soldiers from patroling at night and names a company of freedmen after him. She won't punish the nobles indiscriminately, however (so she follows Reznak's advice rather than the Shavepate's, even if she doesn't like him).

Dany considers banning the tokar, but ultimately relents and uses it herself.

Dany says no to helping Cleon in Astapor against Yunkai (despite regretting that she wasn't more ruthless against the latter).

Dany closes the fighting pits and, despite knowing that she needs Hizdahr's support, refuses to reopen them for moral reasons.

Dany is angry that the slavers "hire[d] the [freedmen] back as servants at wages so meagre that most could scarce afford to eat" and that "those too old or young to be of use had been cast into the street, along with the infirm and the crippled". Then, they hypocritically went to complain about "how the dragon queen had filled their noble city with hordes of unwashed beggars, thieves and whores".

Dany weighs on her suitors, but doesn't take any real measures to choose a husband for now.

Dany sends her khalasar to subdue the hinterlands, where "thousands of slaves still toiled on vast estates in the hills, growing wheat and olives, herding sheep and goats, and mining salt and copper". (In Dany V, we'll be told that they succeeded)

Dany sends Daario to convince the Lhazarene to reopen the overland trade routes and bring grains down the river or over the hills at need. 

Dany gives the freedmen and the noblemen equal attention at court. 

Former slaver Grazdan (a relative of the Green Grace) says that six young girls owed him gold because they learned their craft from an old weaver who was his slave. Dany denies him the request and, instead, orders him to buy the young girls a new loom for forgetting the old woman's name. 

A freedmen asks for a noble to be gelded for raping his wife back when she was his bed slave and to receive a purse of gold for having to take care of the noble's child. Dany grants him the gold, but not the gelding (because it would establish a precedent where other masters would have to be punished for their crimes, which would go against her blanket). 

A nobleborn boy asks her to kill the slaves who revolted against his family by killing his father and elder brother and raping his mother before killing her and who are now living in his house. Dany denies him the request because it would go against her blanket. 

A rich woman (who lost her husband and sons during the sack) asks for her house (which she left in fear for her safety), clothes and jewels back, for they are now all in possession of former bed slaves who turned the house into a brothel. Dany allows her to have her jewels, but gives the house and the clothes to the former bed slaves because of her sympathy for them.

ADWD Daenerys II 

Dany initially asks the Shavepate to question the wineseller and his daughters sweetly, but later she allows him to torture them in order to find who killed Missandei's brother, Rylona Rhee and seven other freedmen in one night. 

Dany also asks for the Shavepate to create a new watch and imposes a blood tax on the slavers to compensate for the deaths of the freedmen and pay the soldiers she'll employ.

Dany keeps two children from each pyramid as hostages. 

Dany still says no to the reopening of the fighting pits, though she feels more reluctant after hearing what the pit fighters want. 

Reznak says that the freedmen were disrespecting the traditions of the guilds for "carving stone and laying bricks" for a cheap price and calling themselves "journeymen" or "masters" and that the guilds ask for her to "uphold their ancient rights and customs". Dany grants that only the guild members can be named "journeymen" or "masters", but that the guilds will have to give the freedmen the opportunity to become members too. She also allows the freedmen to continue to carve stone or lay bricks cheaply because they are hungry, though they won't use those titles anymore. 

Dany chooses to pay Hazzea's father the blood price; she sets it at one hundred times the worth of a lamb. She also lays her bones to rest in the Temple of the Graces, orders a hundred candles in her memory each day and night and promises to pay for her children "each year upon her nameday" so they "shall not want" too. She asks him not to tell anyone that Drogon was involved, though.

Dany chains her dragons.

ADWD Daenerys III 

Dany considers the possibility of leaving for Westeros with the thirteen ships that Xaro offered her, but she ultimately gives up.  

Dany organizes the freedmen of fighting age into companies (Mother's Men, Stalwart Shields, Free Brothers). 

Dany tries to sell Meereen's salt, copper and wine for Xaro.

Dany sends envoys to Tolos and Mantarys in an attempt to make alliances against Yunkai, but is told by Xaro that the two joined the latter (and later Qarth also will). 

Dany still denies help to Astapor because, if she gives them part of her forces, there won't be enough men to defend Meereen. 

Dany is replanting olive trees. 

Xaro tells Dany that a former merchant who dealt in rare spices and choice wines ended up working to dig a ditch to bring water from the river to the fields and to plant beans. (The man, however, was a merchant who most likely lost his slaves, couldn't leave the city because he was unable to trade his goods and then had to find work. The available work was to dig ditches to plant beans and reform the city's economy.) 

Dany chooses many freedmen to be advisors in her council.

ADWD Daenerys IV

Despite the Shavepate's wishes, Dany refuses to kill the child hostages in response to the Sons' ongoing attacks.

After making several questions to Hizdahr (and after he emphasizes that Yunkai has a lot of support to fight against her), Dany says she'll marry Hizdahr as long as he's able to maintain peace in Meereen for ninety days. She previously had objections to the Green Grace's advice about whether it would be beneficial and considers what both Reznak and the Shavepate would think after she makes her choice. She also distrusts Hizdahr, the Green Grace and Reznak. 

Dany considers making a peace agreement with Yunkai, though she's unsatisfied with the other freedmen in the other cities potentially being enslaved again. 

Dany reiterates that she can't go to Westeros until she heals Meereen.

ADWD Daenerys V 

Dany doesn't allow the Shavepate to continue his tortures because she realizes that they are unreliable. Unlike him, she thinks that there isn't a single overlord working against her because "[her] enemies are legion". She also believes that Hizdahr convinced them to stop the killings either through bribery or because of news of their marriage. 

Dany "has planted beans and grapes and wheats" and will soon have the friendship of the hinterlands (which is bringing crops to the city) and Lhazar. 

Dany finds out that Astapor has fallen into the hands of the Yunkish and that the bloody flux has spread in Astapor. She is given more details by refugees of what exactly happened and regrets not having helped the Astapor (even if her military strength wasn't large enough to help). 

Dany considers waging war against Yunkai (which Barristan thinks she should, while the Shavepate advises her not to do so), but she doesn't have enough men to do that and to protect Meereen at the same time, so she gives up on the option. 

Dany orders Ben and his Second Sons to scout the Yunkish forces. She also grants Ben's request for provisions, fresh horses, bags of gold and gems (which he made because he intends to betray her) and asks Reznak to close the gates and double the number of soldiers keeping watch upon the walls. 

Dany decides that she needs Hizdahr's support to gain the Meereenese nobles' help and protect the city from Yunkai. 

Dany sets up a camp for the Astapori refugees "beside the river, west of the city". She tries to separate the healthy from the sick, but that meant separating family members. That is ultimately for naught, since the ones who were only sick at first died and the ones who were healthy got sick.

ADWD Daenerys VI  

Dany sends "healers, Blue Graces and spell-singers and barbersurgeons" to the Astapori refugees, but they got sick as well. She commanded them to dig ditches to defecate, but they started to do it where they slept because they were too weak to stand up and defecate there. She sent the food that she could, but "every day there were more of them and less food to give them". Even sending food was becoming hard, since some soldiers were becoming sick and others attacked on the way back to the city. This leads Dany to bring the food herself, even while knowing all of the risks that doing so would entail. She wants to show her people that "their Mother cares". She also considers sharing the food equally twice. She baths an old man herself even while knowing all of the risks, she burns the dead corpses (which could have transmitted the disease) herself, she "shames all of them into helping her" to take care of people who she had no allegiance to and would receive no benefit from helping. 

Dany agrees to marry by Ghiscari rites and use a "white tokar fringed with baby pearls", but she won't allow her womb to be examined by Hizdahr's mother and sisters nor will she wash Hizdahr's feet if he won't wash hers first. 

Dany says that Hizdahr can reopen the fighting pits after their wedding and that she wants no part of it.

Dany begrudgingly agrees to Yunkai's terms of peace. She's okay with paying "gold and gemstones", but she's still not content with having to see slavery being reinstalled and being told not to interfere. She also needs to follow through with her marriage so that the slavers will believe in her. 

Dany finds out that Brown Ben betrayed her, so she decides to gather food to sustain the Meereenese citizens, keep all of her forces inside and close the gates with the Astapori refugees starving outside the city.

ADWD Daenerys VII 

The Yunkai'i are besieging Meereen and building catapults, scorpions and tall trebuchets in case they need to attack. 

The freedmen continue to be mistreated in "palanquins, litters, and sedan chairs". 

Dany stopped holding court due to being disillusioned by the negative repercussions of her actions.

Quentyn offers himself as a husband to Dany in return for Dorne's support so that they can honor the secret part originally made to marry Viserys and Arianne. Dany refuses him and goes through with her marriage because of her people; in order to protect them, she needs Hizdahr's support immediately, while Quentyn only has two men.

ADWD Daenerys VIII  

The Yunkai'i have men of the free companies, two iron legions of New Ghis and two Ghiscari legions by their side. 

Dany has to accept the Yunkish lords bringing slaves to serve them and to be sold in a market outside the city as one of the conditions of the peace agreement. 

After Hizdahr is crowned, the Shavepate is removed from command of the Brazen Beasts (which is another concession that Dany made in the name of peace).

Dany orders the food that would normally be thrown away to be given to the poor. 

Dany orders Barristan to set Pretty Meris free so that she can send her offer to the Tattered Prince. She wants to sound out the Windblown, the Long Lances and the Company of the Cat.

Dany shows Quentyn her dragons and tells him that "[her] marriage need not be the end of all [his] hopes" because "the dragon has three heads".

ADWD Daenerys IX 

Dany is willing to pay gold for the Windblown's support, but the Tattered Prince wants more than that; he also asks her to give him Pentos when she marches for Westeros. She denies his request out of consideration for Illyrio. 

After a freedman collapses while carrying a palanquin, Dany orders him to be taken off the street and be given food and water. She also notes that, even after freeing the slaves, their work (in this case, carrying the palanquin) is still just as hard.

Dany makes restrictions to lessen the harshness towards the participants: only freedmen can join the duels (only those who "freely consented to risk their lives for gold and honor"); children are not allowed to participate and only certain criminals (murderers, rapers and those who persist in slavery, not thieves or debtors) would be sentenced to fight; women, comic combats between cripples, dwarfs and crones and beasts are still allowed to fight; the carcasses of bears and bulls are used to feed the hungry at the Gates of Fate.

Freedmen are being slaughtered to amuse the noblemen in the pits.

In your chapter by chapter analysis, you mention that the people who consider themselves the sons of Ghis reverse engineered their religion from archeological remnants of a culture that no longer exists. Could you please expand on that?

The Ghiscari Empire was destroyed five thousand years ago, with the remnants of Ghiscari territory becoming Valyrian territory and the former rulers being sold into slavery. Over those five thousand years, the original Ghiscari language and culture was lost, and there was a demographic transition such that the enslaved Ghiscari mixed with their masters and slaves from other regions, and so on.

Fast forward to the Century of Blood, and the cities of Slaver’s Bay are seeking to regain their independence just like the Free Cities, and one of the ways they did so was by emphasizing Ghiscari nationalism. As with all nationalisms, this involves the creation of an “imagined community” - because the language and culture was lost, it has to be reinvented and distorted (as we see with the Unsullied and the lockstep legions). I would equate it as being similar to how Renaissance Italian city-states idealized their Roman heritage, despite the fact that the Roman Empire had fallen a thousand years before, the people spoke Italian instead of Latin, lots of elite people ignored whatever Lombard or Gothic heritage they had in favor of pretending to be “pure-blooded Romans,” and so on.

How would the golden company's infantry fight? Phalanx, man at arms shield wall, shiltron, tercio? Are they all generic man at arms or would they mix it up with pikes and halbradiers and swordsmen and axes and such?

The Fantasy Flight Games card for the Golden Company has them in a phalanx formation, which serves well as a strong fighting core with the cavalry on the wing. This makes sense, the successors to the lockstep legions of Ghis, but I doubt that they only serve with the spear and shield. That strikes me as far too rigid for the Golden Company to exclusively rely on one formation for their infantry corps given how varied their archery and mounted corps are. I theorize that the Golden Company probably also has heavy infantry fighting with swords who exploit gaps created in enemy infantry lines, this crucial role would be to follow up and complete the breaking of the enemy lines, so that the knights and squires can launch the pursuit with their cavalry troops and complete the rout. 

The Golden Company are the Bruce Lee of the setting, incorporating what works into their army, hence why we see them use Ghiscari phalanx with Westerosi heavy cavalry and Dothraki mounted archery. So they have the discipline of the Unsullied but greater initiative and flexibility on the field, and are likely trained in a variety of combat methods to suit changing battlefield conditions.

We’re not given any indication of the time span between the wars – years, decades, centuries? How long did each war last? Did Old Ghis come close to winning the last war and did that cause the razing of the country? What caused the wars – was it as simple as a rising empire clashing with an existing empire?

Yandel notes the remains of Old Ghis are a “paltry thing” – “a few cities clinging like sores to Slaver’s Bay and another that pretends to be Old Ghis come again.”

The cities of Slaver’s Bay wasted no time re-governing themselves after the Doom of Valyria. Their main income/export is the purchasing and breeding of slaves.

Astapor, Yunaki, and Mereen pay tribute to khalasars but also purchase numerous slaves from the Dothraki.

New Ghis is the smallest and newest of the Slaver’s Bay cities. New Ghis has iron legions, a pale imitation of Old Ghis’s legions. At least the members of the iron legions are free men instead of slaves.

In summary: Slaver’s Bay is disgusting.

Sort of an out of the way question, but what do you think the actual human military of the Valyrian Freehold was like at its height? Not the dragons and so on mind you but the on the ground soldiers. It seems like the Dragonlords would need garrisons and guards and such at a minimum, but would they have a proper military other than this? I am really fascinated by the Valyrians and their Empire so I wanted to see what you thought. Thanks.

The worldbook goes into this, the Valyrians use the lockstep legion based off the Ghiscari model, so the Valyrian infantry was probably based on the early Etruscan army, fighting in the hoplite style. With the dragon as their overwhelmingly powerful maneuver component, they would have no need to evolve the maniple or experience the Marian reforms as the dragon would provide overwhelming power while the infantry occupies the territory afterward.
