It was just a day like any other.
Sunny had lost track of how long he had been in isolation. He mostly slept the day away, cooped up in his bedroom, spending his time in his own world with his friends. White Space may have been colder than reality, but it was comfortable and safe, and Mewo sat purring away on his lap, offering a bit of warmth in the otherwise freezing room. Omori tapped away on his laptop nearby, his cape draped over his shoulders like a blanket. They were content for now, but Sunny eventually spoke up.
"… when can we go visit?"
"Same as usual. Whenever you want."
Omori’s tone was always monotonous and empty, and it used to frighten poor Sunny, though he had eventually grown used to it. He set Mewo back down on the ground, going to stand up.
"I want to now."
Omori glanced back up at him over the laptop, nodding as he closed it up and set it down as well.
"Very well then."
He stood up, calling forth some red hands to escort them to Headspace. That was the one thing Sunny could never get used to. The thought of disembodied hands was bad enough, but their touch was cold and painful. Sometimes he could outrun them, but that only made the grip worse once they inevitably caught up and grabbed him.
Nevertheless, he walked alongside Omori as the hands took either side of them, and together they went through the door to Headspace.
The three friends looked up from their card game as the two came through, and of course, Aubrey was the first to get up and greet them, running up and hugging Sunny tightly. Omori stepped aside to make room — he didn’t want to be swept up in the hug as well. He wasn’t very fond of hugs.
"You’re finally back!"
The two brothers came up to greet them as well, each giving their own greetings.
"Hey, Sunny! Omori!"
Kel flashed his signature big grin, and Hero gave a slightly smaller, but still equally warm and friendly smile.
"We were wondering when you’d show up again."
Sunny quietly nodded, his face growing warm. It felt nice to be accepted by his friends.
His eyes drifted around the Neighbor’s Room for a moment. It was intricately adorned like a palace, but still had the friends’ toys strewn about. The Big Yellow Cat watched them from above, its ever-vigilent gaze offering comforting protection.
"Oh — Mari and Basil invited us to a picnic again, Sunny! Would you want to go with us?" Hero offered, and Sunny looked back up at him, giving a quiet nod. It wasn’t anything new, really, but he wouldn’t miss a chance to spend time with his sister — especially with Hero himself giving the invitation. Wow…
"Allllright! Let’s go!" Kel exclaimed at that, bouncing, and Omori huffed at them before going to take the lead, reminding them of their place. He was the one in control, even if they were his friends.
The group went up the stairs, stopping by the stair snake to gather their allowance, before exiting their room to head to the park.
Sure enough, Mari and Basil were sitting on the picnic blanket, chatting away and waiting patiently for the group. Sunny immediately ran to hug Mari when he spotted her, and she stopped for a moment from surprise before hugging back, giving him a big squeeze.
"There you are, little brother!"
"Hi, Sunny!"
Basil gave his own greeting and smiled at the siblings, snapping a quick photo of them while they were distracted. The other friends came and took their spots on the blanket, and the red hands stayed close, standing guard. … except not literally, because they’re hands, not legs.
The group chattered away indistinctly as Sunny focuses on his sister, leaning into her and scanning the playground. Everyone was playing together in one way or another… except…
The voices began to drown out as Sunny’s gaze landed on a shadow in the distance. It stared back at him with a piercing, quiet gaze before retreating into the forest. Curiously, Sunny stood up, going to follow the figure, barely managing to outrun the hands to do so.
He ventured deep into the surrounding woods, looking around and trying to spot the figure from before. It was a while before he found it, and it still gave him that same gaze.
"Sunny…"
A chill ran through him as it said his name, and he nervously took a step back. He regretted this. He wanted to go back to his friends.
"Sunny… you need to wake up."
A paralyzing fear took hold of him, making it impossible to run away, but it all suddenly ended as the familiar grasp of a red hand grabbed his arm and yanked him away. It pierced him like a bunch of little needles, and he yelped and instinctively squirmed against it.
It dragged him all the way back to Omori, who stood on a platform of other red hands, glaring down at him from above.
"I thought I told you before not to run off like that."
"I… I-I’m sorry…"
Sunny’s weak, timid voice stuttered out anxiously as his eyes met Omori’s, the dead gaze staring into his soul. His eyes were dark and cold, but a red glow covered the blackness.
"… you should be. Let’s go back. Everyone’s waiting for you again."
The platform of hands lowered Omori back down to the ground, and the one holding Sunny let go of his arm, gently nudging him forward. He went to follow Omori, looking down at the ground. He was too scared to look anywhere else.
Omori, however, gazed back into the woods, and the same shadow glared out at him coldly.
"This means war."
