People who drink a glass of wine a day have a lower risk of depression
IF you’re a lover of wine, it’s time to celebrate – as a new study has revealed that people who drink a glass a day had a lower risk of depression than those who are tee-total.
Researchers in Sweden looked at the lifestyle habits of 5,000 people over a 12 year period to see how alcohol affected their mental health.
Researchers in Sweden found that alcohol can be good for your mental well being

And they found that those who were happiest drank up to 14 units of alcohol a week – or the equivalent of 10 pints of beer and a little less than 10 glasses of wine.
Those who chose not to drink ended up with a 70-percent higher risk of depression, but binge drinkers who took it over the ideal limit were worst off, at 80 percent more likely to suffer.
Published in the Acta Phsychiatrica of Scandinavia, part of a group of scientific journals, overall alcohol was tied to good mental health.
While excessive drinking is proven to be risky, sticking to the ‘sweet spot’ of 14 units can end up being more beneficial than you might think.

If you don’t believe it – in all but one of the world’s Blue Zones, where life expectancy is the longest, the majority of people have at least one drink a day.
Risks can be higher for younger women who could develop heart disease or cancer from alcohol abuse, but other studies have shown risks have been overestimated in some cases.
In fact, while older women were thought to be in danger by drinking, it was found that alcohol was protective for those past the retirement age.
Psychologist Sir Cary Lynn Cooper said on the matter: “Drinking helps people unburden themselves. The tricky bit is just knowing how much or too much is bad for mental health.”

Researchers Say, Drinking Red Wine Avoids Obesity And Gives 'Healthier Guts'
Red wine drinkers have a more diverse range of bacteria in their gut and therefore better digestive health than those who prefer other alcoholic drinks, a study found.
The research adds a point in favor of the drink in a long-running scientific tug of war over whether it’s good or bad for you.
Compounds in red wine called polyphenols may act as fuel for a range of health-giving bacteria and fungi living in the gut, the researchers suggested.
They said red wine could also help the body to maintain healthy cholesterol levels, keep a strong immune system and avoid obesity.
One of the scientists at King’s College London claimed: ‘If you must choose one alcoholic drink today, red wine is the one to pick.’
Past studies have produced confusing evidence over red wine, however, with some claiming it can lower the risk of heart disease or dementia and slow down cancer, and others finding the exact opposites.
Tumblr media
Red wine has, on average, six or seven times as many antioxidants as white wine varieties, according to King’s College researchers (stock image)
Researchers studied the effects of drinking red wine, white wine or alcoholic spirits in 458 pairs of twin sisters – 916 women in total.
They compared their results with other studies done on 1,104 people living in the Netherlands and 904 in the US.
People in the studies were asked about their diets and had levels of bacteria in their guts measured in the lab.
Those who drank red wine – even if it was only once every couple of weeks – had a ‘significantly higher’ diversity of bacteria in their digestive system, the study said.
Drinking white wine, however, led to only a ‘lesser but suggestive’ improvement, white spirits such as vodka or gin had no effects.
The scientists believe this is down to the polyphenols – antioxidant nutrients found in fruits – which are found in grapes used to make wine, particularly reds.
Red varieties, which include Merlot, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, have, on average, six to seven times more polyphenols than white wines.
‘This is one of the largest ever studies to explore the effects of red wine in the gut,’ said the lead author of the study, Professor Tim Spector.
‘[It] provides insights that the high levels of polyphenols in the grape skin could be responsible for much of the controversial health benefits when used in moderation.’
The team suggested bacteria in the body may feed off the compounds found in the grapes.
Having a wide range of the bacteria helps the body to digest foods and create chemicals for absorbing energy from food, transporting oxygen, controlling cholesterol levels, reducing obesity, boosting liver function and protecting the heart.
Tumblr media
Studies published by scientists between April and October last year alone presented a confusing list of apparent benefits and risks of drinking wine, which sometimes make opposite claims about the same illnesses
Meanwhile, an imbalance of ‘good’ microbes compared to ‘bad’ can lead to a weakened immune system, weight gain or high cholesterol.
Having a higher number of different bacterial species is considered a marker of good gut health by scientists.
Study author Dr. Caroline Le Roy added: ‘While we have long known of the unexplained benefits of red wine on heart health, this study shows that moderate red wine consumption is associated with greater diversity and healthier gut microbiota that partly explain its long-debated beneficial effects on health.
‘Drinking red wine rarely, such as once every two weeks, seems to be enough to observe an effect.
‘If you must choose one alcoholic drink today, red wine is the one to pick as it seems to potentially exert a beneficial effect on you and your gut microbes, which in turn may also help weight and risk of heart disease.
‘However, it is still advised to consume alcohol with moderation.’
Dr. Le Roy and Professor Spector said their results stayed the same even when they took into account people’s ages, heights, weights, and diets, but admitted a drawback was that people may not tell the truth about their drinking habits.
Professor Kim Barrett, from the University of California San Diego, was not involved with the study but said it was ‘very well-done’.
She said: ‘In the long run, this work might suggest (perhaps less pleasurable) ways to obtain the apparent health benefits of red wine consumption without drinking the wine itself, although more work would be needed to isolate and test the components of red wine that are responsible for the effects seen here.’
The team’s research was published in the journal Gastroenterology.

The Oil Debate: Everything You Need to Know
Hiya Gorgeous!
Have you heard?! We’re in the midst of a great vegetable oil debate!
The dispute: Is oil healthy? Or is it just a processed, unnecessary, high-fat food that we’re better leaving off of our plates and out of our skillets?
In truth, the debate over oil is nothing new. Confusion about whether or not it’s part of a healthy diet has been around for a long time and I’ve gotten lots of questions about it over the years. But as my team and I prep for this year’s Crazy Sexy You (enrollment is opening soon!), we’re coming across more oil uncertainty than ever before.
So I teamed up with Crazy Sexy Nutrition Director, Jen Reilly, RD, to tackle this debate head on!
You might’ve heard some of your favorite plant-based health gurus recommend eliminating oil completely—even extra virgin olive oil, which has been shown to lower cholesterol levels and help prevent heart disease (study). So, let’s start by breaking down four of the most common criticisms we hear about veggie oils. Then we’ll cover some of the possible benefits of including them in your diet so you can figure out what’s best for you.
But first, let’s do a quick review of the types of fats found in plant oils:
Trans fats (avoid these completely): These fats have no health benefits and are actually harmful. They’re made by taking healthy vegetable oils and adding hydrogen atoms to make them more shelf-stable. They show up in processed and fried foods and have been shown to increase “bad” LDL cholesterol levels while also decreasing “good” HDL cholesterol (study).
Saturated fats (try to eat these sparingly): These fats have generally been considered unhealthy, especially when it comes to heart disease risk. But not all types of saturated fats are created equal. The saturated fat in coconut oil, for example, doesn’t tend to increase cholesterol levels and heart disease risk the way saturated fats from animal products do (study).
Monounsaturated fats: You’ll find these fats in foods like avocados, nuts and the star of today’s show: olive oil! Studies have shown that monounsaturated fats can help lower breast cancer risk (study) and cholesterol levels (source), improve rheumatoid arthritis symptoms (study), and reduce belly fat (study).
Polyunsaturated fats: These fats are found mostly in vegetable oils (corn, sunflower, safflower, etc.). Omega-3s also fall into this category, and they’re considered the healthiest, most essential fats on the block. They’re known for improving heart health and decreasing risk of stroke (source). They’re also important for building brain cells and supporting a healthy nervous system (source). You’ll find omega-3s in flax, walnut and hemp oils.
Alright, now that we’ve covered the types of fats you’ll find in plant oils, let’s dig into four of the top criticisms you might’ve heard from the anti-oil side of this debate.
Criticism #1: Olive oil constricts blood vessels.
One of the most noteworthy waves of anti-oil hype started in 2000 when Dr. Vogel, a heart specialist at the University of Maryland, published a small study looking at how the various components of the Mediterranean diet might impact endothelial function (aka blood vessel constriction, which is a possible risk factor for heart disease).
Study subjects ate one of three meals containing olive oil, omega 3-fortified canola oil or salmon. Results showed that arteries didn’t constrict at all after subjects ate salmon, but did to some extent when they consumed canola oil (reducing blood flow by 11 percent) and olive oil (reducing blood flow by 34 percent). While blood vessel constriction isn’t a confirmed risk factor for heart disease, this finding still raised alarm.
The good news is that when combined with antioxidant-rich foods like vegetables or even red wine vinegar (hello, yummy salad dressing!), the vessel-constricting effect of olive oil disappears almost completely (study). It’s also worth noting that extra virgin olive oil has more antioxidants than refined olive oil, so I encourage you to opt for that when you can (just be careful using extra virgin olive oil in cooking—more on that later!).
At the end of the day, unless you’re diet is imbalanced and lacks sufficient antioxidants, this blood vessel issue is a non-issue.
Confusion about whether or not oil is part of a healthy diet has been around for years—some health gurus swear by its benefits while others recommend eliminating it completely. Here’s what you need to know about the great oil debate!
Criticism #2: Olive oil has over a 10:1 ratio omega-6s to omega-3s.
It’s important to maintain a 4:1 ratio of omega-6s to omega-3s in your diet to protect your body from inflammation and heart disease, maintain a strong immune system, and support a healthy central nervous system. But because omega-6s are easy to get (they’re in nutrient-rich vegetable oils like sunflower and safflower oil, but also in lots of processed foods, poultry and eggs) and omega-3s aren’t as readily available, this balance can be hard to strike.
Olive oil is made up of far more omega-6s than omega-3s, so some argue that consuming it makes that ideal ratio even harder to achieve. But using it in moderation simply isn’t enough to cause an imbalance because the total amount of omega-6s is still quite small when compared with those other omega-6-rich foods mentioned above.
This is still a good reminder to choose your omega-6 sources wisely. They are essential and while some, like sunflower oil, are rich sources of vitamin E and other nutrients, others are packed with inflammatory nasties (yep, I’m talking about processed foods and animal products). Also, make sure you’re getting sufficient omega-3s by including ground flaxseed, flax oil, chia seeds and walnuts in your meals
Criticism #3: Vegetable oils are unsafe at high heat.
Prolonged high temperatures can cause certain oils to break down and produce potentially toxic, cancer-causing compounds such as lipid peroxides and aldehydes. Oils high in polyunsaturated fats (flax, canola, soybean, safflower and sunflower) are most prone to this kind of oxidative damage. So while those oils are great for salads, raw meals and dishes that are heated quickly at lower temps (like simmered soups), they’re not the best choice for most cooking.
But this doesn’t mean you can’t cook with oil at all—you just need to use the right kind! Olive, grapeseed and avocado oils are actually quite stable at high heat. The fats in these oils are primarily monounsaturated, making them lower in those polyunsaturated fats we talked about above. They also have high smoke points, making them great choices for the majority of cooking methods. Olive oil has a smoke point between 374-406°F (190-208°C), grapeseed oil has a smoke point of 420°F (216°C) and avocado oil’s smoke point is around 500°F (260°C). Plus, olive oil and avocado oil are rich in antioxidants (vitamin E among others), which actually work to prevent the oxidative damage that can occur when an oil is heated past its smoke point.
Keep in mind: Extra virgin olive oil has a lower smoke point than refined olive oil, so it shouldn’t be used for prolonged cooking over high heat. Some even say that it should be limited to use in salad dressings and simmered dishes like soups and pastas. Not only will extra virgin olive oil smoke more quickly, but its flavonoids and nutrients will degrade faster than those in refined olive oil, which has had its impurities removed.
Criticism #4: Oils may promote weight gain because they’re 100% fat.
Dietary fat contains 9 calories per gram vs. carbohydrates and protein, which have just 4 calories per gram, making it the richest source of calories available. Even a gram of alcohol has fewer calories than fat (seven, to be exact!). For this reason, people often blame fat (and oil by association) for promoting weight gain or getting in the way of healthy weight management.
While it’s true that vegetable oils are processed foods made up of 100 percent fat, that doesn’t make them 100 percent bad for you! Including oils in your diet can make meals more satisfying. Plus, consuming some added fats in the form of oil can help keep hunger at bay longer than if you go oil-free (study). Many of us have personal experience with this—when I was going through my low-fat phase in the 90s (along with the rest of the US!), I was ALWAYS hungry!
When it comes to appetite control, satiety and body weight, coconut oil is especially helpful because it contains something called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs are used almost immediately by the liver for energy and are very rarely stored as body fat. They can also keep your metabolism (your calorie-burning machinery) running faster for a longer period of time than other fatty acids (study). Take that, hunger!
Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all diet and it’s important to follow a plan that works best for you. Because oil is so calorie-dense, giving it up (or being more conscious about measuring out a moderate amount) is what helps some people maintain or achieve their goal weight—and that’s great! If you do end up going oil-free, just make sure you’re getting those healthy fats elsewhere—I’ve included tips to help you do so later on in this post.

More Reasons to Include Oils
Now that we’ve covered some of the main oil criticisms, let’s talk about what’s to love about oil. Here are some of the reasons it’s part of my diet:
Oils add satisfaction and flavor to plant-powered meals. A tablespoon is all it takes to bring out incredible flavors and textures in stir-fries and other sautéed dishes. It can be challenging to stick with a veggie-powered diet in a meat-eating world, so if using oil in moderation helps you do that (it sure does for me!), then I’m all for it.
Oils help make meals more balanced when whole plant fats are missing. We need whole plant fats and essential fatty acids to stay healthy—it’s that simple. But we may not always be able to get the optimal amounts from whole seeds, nuts, olives and avocados alone. Plus, variety is important. Adding oils is an easy way to round out the nutritional profile of your meals.
Oils are full of concentrated nutrition. Oils from nuts, seeds, olives and avocados are rich in the antioxidant vitamin E as well as other polyphenols, which help prevent oxidative damage and reduce risk for chronic diseases. Flax, soybean and walnut oils are especially rich sources of omega-3 essential fats, which are crucial for heart disease prevention and the development and health of our entire nervous system. They also help keep our hair shiny and full, and cuticles healthy! And let’s not forget that olive and avocado oils are monounsaturated fat superstars that not only lower cholesterol levels and cancer risk, but also improve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and help reduce belly fat.
To Oil or Not to Oil? The Bottom Line
So, what’s the final say on oil? Here’s our take…
We don’t need oil to practice a balanced plant-based lifestyle. But in our experience, using it in moderation makes any healthy diet richer, easier and more fulfilling. And who doesn’t want that?
But remember: At the end of the day, only you and your doc can decide what’s right for you. I’m in favor of whatever helps you feel your absolute best. If you’ve determined that avoiding oil is the way to go, then keep doing what you’re doing!
Before you go, here’s a quick recap of what you need to know to include oils in your diet in a healthy way:
Use oils higher in monounsaturated fat for cooking because they’re safer at high heats. Olive, avocado and grapeseed oils are your BFFs for stir fries, soups, pasta dishes and grilling. Store them at room temp away from heat (not on the stove!).
Use oils higher in polyunsaturated fat and extra virgin olive oil for raw dishes and dressings like a yummy homemade vinaigrette. Flax, sunflower and walnut oils are best served unheated and stored in the fridge.
Coconut oil is great for increasing the satiety of meals and keeping your metabolism fired up because it contains MCTs.
Keep a variety of oils on hand to strike a nutritious balance. My guide to healthy fats will help you figure out which oils (and how much!) to include on a daily basis. Check it out here.
If you choose to avoid oils completely, you must be sure to include whole nuts, seeds, olives and avocados in your diet to ensure you’re getting the right balance of calories from carbs, protein and fat!
Your turn: I hope this info helps clear up any worries you had about oil. If you have any more Qs, ask away in the comments below!
Peace and plant oils,

How much sugar are you REALLY eating? Food diaries revealed
We all know we should be keeping the sweet stuff to a minimum. But are you aware of how much sugar you are really eating in a day? Three women keep food diaries and are shocked at their results
Sugar is public enemy number one when you look at the evidence stacked against it. Heart disease, type 2 diabetes, tooth decay, liver disease and cancer have all been linked to excess consumption. Not to mention obesity, which 26 per cent of adults were classified as in 2016.
The average British adult is getting 57g of free sugar a day – nearly twice the recommended amount
A lot of us admit to being a borderline sugar addict, but how many of us really know how much we are eating? Those afternoon biscuits, fizzy drinks with meals and late night comforts really do add up – ‘We should not be eating more than 30g of added sugar (around 7 teaspoons) a day’, says Helen Bond, consultant and dietician. However, ‘the average British adult is getting through 57g of free sugar a day.’ Eek… These are mainly from table sugar, such as preserves, sweets, chocolate and even chewing gum.
The 101 on sugar
Let’s get into the nitty gritty. The term ‘added sugar’, actually refers to ‘free sugars’, and they are the ones we should be wary of. Free sugars are those added to food, such as highly processed confectionary. However, they are also naturally present in honey, syrups and fruit juices. The other sugars are natural occurring sugars are found in whole fruit and vegetables and milk and dairy products.
Sugars come in natural and added forms
The Reference Intake (new term for Guideline Daily Amount) for total sugars is 90g a day. This is essentially 30g of added or ‘free sugars’, and 60g maximum of natural sugars.
Let’s look at a fruit bowl – a medium size banana contains 7g of sugar, an apple 16g, and an orange 12g. So, should we be restricting our fruit intake? ‘In my point of view, I’m not worried about sugar in fruit’, says Helen. ‘It comes with fibre, vitamins, minerals and water – this combination is not harmful and is generally good for us.
Many of us still fail to reach the recommended 5-A-Day. Only 29 per cent of UK men and 32% of women aged 19-64 year olds’, says Helen. In contrast, those free sugars are not necessary for a healthy diet and won’t be doing too much other than add to our waistlines and health woes.
How to read the label
Although the guidelines are clear, the labels are not so. ‘The problem we have is when you look at labels on a pack, they don’t differentiate between natural sugars and the added free sugars’, says Helen.
Even something like baked which is tomato based can have a lot of added sugar
What’s more, some things may seem healthy on the outside, but are hiding some of the bad sugars. A recent study that analysed the nutrients of almost 900 yoghurts on supermarket shelves found that some may contain more sugar than Coca Cola.
Fewer than one in ten categories of yoghurt sold qualify as low-sugar, with organic and those marketed at children being amongst the most sugary – the shock horror. ‘Things like yoghurts, fruit based products and even something like baked which is tomato based can have a lot of added sugar. Hence why a lot of people are confused’, says Helen.
As a rule of thumb, use the traffic light system, or ‘carbohydrates (of which sugars)’ figure in the nutrition label to guide you:
More than 22.5 of total sugars per 100g is high
5g of total sugars or less per 100g is low
If the amount of sugars per 100g is between these figures, it’s a medium amount of sugars.
Use the traffic code systems on labels
‘Then I would go to ingredient list and get familiar with the many names sugar comes under’, says Helen. ‘Usually anything with ‘-ose’ at the end tends to be sugar but it comes in other forms such as honey syrups and juices, and trendy ones like agave and nectar. If sugar comes up as the first two ingredients, you can get the idea that it’s normally a high sugar product.’
How much sugar are THEY really eating? The sugar diaries
Helen looked at three case studies of women with various levels of ‘addiction’ to sugar to assess just how easy these ‘free sugars’ are creeping in.
Healthista asked the women, Kirstie Johnson, 22, Laura May, 39 and our very own editor Anna Magee, 49, to keep an honest week’s food diary, ready to be critiqued…
The sugar and caffeine junkie
Kirstie Johnson, 22
Goals: Better skin, stable mood, leaner body.
Week total sugars: 1440g Average day: 200g
*For the full food diary please see bottom of page.
I rely on sugar and caffeine
‘On a normal day I’m on my feet for about 8-10 hours as a Head Vetinary Nurse and I rely on sugar and caffeine. Within the day, I have bursts of extreme energy and then all of a sudden I’ll be crashing and half asleep. I don’t sleep very well either.
‘I’m on a prescription at the moment to control acne. My diet was discussed, but due to my work life, it wasn’t something I felt I could change. Picking at sweets and having drinks is a lot easier for me.
‘I am currently 55kg (8.6 stone) but I would like be leaner. I’ve got bits of fat on my tummy and hips and I think that’s a lot harder to shift because of my diet.’
Helen’s verdict: ‘Kirstie’s sugar diary was the most shocking. If she has a 190g bag of Haribo’s in one sitting, that alone is three times the recommended maximum limit of free sugars in a day (30g).
On Saturday, she has 250g which is eight times the recommended amount. Her habits include having lattes with four pumps of caramel syrup and whipped cream. Every pump is an extra teaspoon of suga
Kirstie’s sugar diary was the most shocking
‘Kirstie is obviously very busy and fuels herself with sugar and caffeine. These spikes in blood sugar levels will affect her mood and skin. A high sugar diet can aggravate the balance of sex hormones which then causes spots.
‘Luckily for her, Kirstie has youth and good genes on her side. She has a high metabolism and is running around all day burning calories.
‘But things will slow down and things will catch up on her over time. What’s worrying is that she appears lean or slim, but her body is what we would call TOFI – thin on the outside and fat on the inside. Someone might look well, but on the inside it’s not so healthy.’
Is your diet like Kirstie’s? Follow Helen’s recommendations:
Start slow and steady with small steps: Kirstie obviously needs to cut down on sugar.
She can start with using diet drinks instead of fizzy drinks [one can of coke contains 33g of sugar] or a Splenda Mini in her coffee or tea.
Low calorie sweetners do get a lot of bad press and usually its one bad study that causes controversy. But if you look at the evidence, they are one of the most rigorously studied ingredients and they are completely safe. They hugely help people who eat a lot of sugar.
Instead of 2tbsp of Nutella for breakfast, peanut butter would provide protein and make her feel fuller. These will make a big difference to the free sugars intake.
Swapping to diet drinks would make a big difference
Low GI diet: There is a lot of evidence for a low GI diet when treating acne. These are foods that release energy slowly instead of spiking blood sugar levels. I would recommend wholegrains, such as wholemeal bread and rice [instead of white], buckwheat and quinoa.
More plant based: Kirstie needs more fruits and vegetables in her diet. Enhancing the nutrients in her diet would benefit her skin, B vitamins, and regulate blood sugar levels.
Introduce more good fats: A lot of people with oily or bad skin think they shouldn’t have more fat. But oily fish and omega 3 will dampen down inflammation in the body.
Be organised: Try and get healthy snacks pre-prepared and avoid buying sweets that lie around that are tempting.
The weight watcher
Laura May, 39
Goals: Weight loss and pain management
Week total sugars: 365g Average day: 50g
*For the full food diary please see bottom of page.
I’m struggling to lose another stone… without eating rabbit food
‘My relationship with sugar is mostly reliance and denial. I work full time and have a 14 month old daughter, Frankie.
‘Having a baby and being diagnosed with Fibromyalgia changed a lot for me. It’s a chronic pain disorder which makes me feel very fatigued. It can feel like I’m carrying extra weight, trying to run through a swimming pool.
‘Six weeks ago I went gluten and diary free. It took away 60-70 per cent of my Fibromyalgia and IBS symptoms, as well as clearing up my skin. At the moment this is more of a priority for me than my sugar intake.
‘I lost a stone after having my baby but I’m struggling to lose another stone and feel ‘myself’ again. I don’t know how to approach it without eating rabbit food.
‘I don’t sleep much, on average six hours a night because of the baby. Then I’ll turn to things full of sugar to get an energy spike. I never ate so much chocolate before I had a baby.’
Helen says: ‘Laura has had a tough time. But she is well within the 90g recommendation and that’s mainly because she’s clearly substituting some processed foods.
Her free sugars are creeping in with biscuits and I worry about the coffee shop treats like the Pret popcorn bar.
However her choices aren’t all bad. For example, she has a KIND Caramel Almond and Sea Salt Bar which has almonds in and is low sugar.
The glasses of Prosecco on a Friday night stood out to me. Even as a lower sugar drink, each glass has 1.5g of sugar, which is a teaspoon after three glasses.
Alcohol contributes to 9 per cent of our sugar intake. Laura is choosing red wine, with no sugar, over sweeter wines. This is good, but there are still a lot of calories in there. Sugar is only part of the picture.
Milk alternatives contain free sugars, whereas milk lattes only have naturally occurring sugars.
As she is dairy free, she is having soya lattes. Soya lattes per 266ml contain roughly 113 kcals and 6g sugars. All sugars naturally present in dairy alternative drinks such as soya, rice, oat and nut-based drinks’ are now included in the definition of free sugars, whereas milk lattes only have naturally occurring sugars.
An important thing to remember is that dairy or gluten free are not necessarily healthier options and can be higher in sugar, fat and calories, and lower in B vitamins which we need for energy.
It may be helping her symptoms now, but there isn’t evidence to support it will work for fibromyalgia and she might not have to eat this way forever.
Is your diet like Laura’s? Follow Helen’s recommendations:
Get adventurous with grains: Laura is lacking in wholegrains with fibre. It’s great she cooks from scratch and she can try gluten free grains such as pulses, teff, brown rice and quinoa to get more nutrient variety. A portion should be the size of a tennis ball, as too much can make you sleepy. Many of us still think that carbs should be off limits if we’re trying to lose weight. But the latest scientific evidence confirms foods rich in starchy carbohydrates are an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet and are good at keeping our digestive system healthy, and a great choice for filling us up, in turn helping to prevent hunger, which can lead to overeating.
Rather than getting her sugar fixes from bars and popcorn, she might find she’s OK with oats with oats which aren’t gluten free. Oatcakes with avocado or nut butter would be a good snack.
Home baking: Working in an office can be dangerous as temptation is often laying everywhere. I would recommend Laura makes gluten free biscuits at home. You know what’s going in there and can use sugar substitutions to cut down free sugars and calories massively.
Home baking can cut down sugars
Improve sleep quality: Not having enough will affect her hormones and it will stimulate her hunger signals. Light exercise and carbohydrates in an evening meal to make you feel more sleepy. If she decides to have dairy again, a glass of warm milk helps to boost serotonin, which at night time turns to melatonin which makes you sleepy. She should also be careful to avoid caffeine up to five hours before bed. (Try Healthista Night Food, £18.95)
Mediterranean style diet: This diet is low in sugars and has a lot of healthy fats. It encompasses a lot of the food groups that are good for overall health and wellbeing. It can dampen inflammation in the body from free radicals and wouldn’t aggravate her symptoms.
The health-aware sugar addict
Anna Magee, 49
Goals: More energy, better ageing, stable mood
Week sugar total: 520g Average day: 75g
*For the full food diary please see bottom of page.
I like to snack on fruit – I can have five pieces in one sitting
‘Writing this diary has made me realise what a sugar junkie I am and how erratic my eating is. I can’t live without fruit and little bits of sugar every day. I like to snack on fruit – I can have five pieces in one sitting – but I don’t have things like dessert, cookies or cake unless it’s a celebration.
‘I don’t feel restricted, but I do have a sweet tooth, especially after and between meals, and will find ways around it with things like grapes, sweetcorn in my salad, sweet chilli on kale, or oat milk in my coffee.
‘I’ve given up sugar entirely before – it was hard for three weeks but then I didn’t even think about it. It really improved my mood. I hope the solution isn’t to eat more things like cheese – I don’t like cheese and I’m mostly vegan!’
Helen’s verdict: ‘Anna’s overall diet is very healthy, and her daily free sugars are under the limit (30g) at roughly 18g, apart from a slice of cake at the weekend.
‘The rest of her sugars come from natural sources such as fruit and salad bowls, totally under 90g. I’m not worried about Anna’s sugars at all.
Anna is underfueling her body and her meal times are erratic.
‘Her calorie intake is lacking sometimes and she does a lot of high intensity workouts. Her lunch is averaging about 470 calories, which is probably why she snacks.
‘Anna doesn’t always have conventional lunchtime meals, but on average, her ‘lunch’ intake for the week is 472 kcals and on Thursday it was just 339 kcals – falling short of PHE’s 600 calorie lunch recommendation. Underfuelling by 128 kcals + may contribute to her mid–afternoon energy lows.
‘Although Anna doesn’t want to overload on food at lunch (as it can contribute to a ‘postpandrial dip’ after a heavy meal), she exercises regularly so does needs to eat more carbohydrate calories to replace the fuel that she has burned in her morning exercise, so I would suggest adding in a portion of wholegrain carbs, such as a small serving of brown pasta of brown rice or quinoa, or a small wholemeal pitta or tortilla wrap.
‘On days when Anna is less active, she will need fewer carbs but again going too low, may leave Anna feeling very tired.
‘The recommended daily calorie intake for women is 2000 kcals but in reality our calorie requirements are very individual and depend on how old, big, tall and active we are, among other things.  This is just a guide but it is also useful for Anna to keep an eye on her weight – Anna is already lovely and slim, so if her weight is falling, then her body is burning more calories than she is consuming and may need to up her calorie intake.
‘On a good note, her protein intake is well within, almost double, the benchmark. This is from her plant based sources such as beans, nuts seeds and protein powder.  Her fibre intake is also excellent.’
Is your diet like Anna’s? Follow Helen’s recommendations:
One of Anna’s main sources of free sugar is from the honey in her smoothie. A lot of people still think of honey as a ‘natural sugar’, but it still counts as a free sugar. A tbsp. is about 12g of sugar which is almost 3tsp of sugar. This is where Anna could try a sugar alternative.
Another surprising high sugar ingredient is sweet chilli sauce, which Anna uses occasionally. And a tbsp of balsamic vinegar gives about 6.5g of free sugars and the third and fourth ingredients on the label are sugar.
Honey has about 12g of sugar per tablespoon
To improve energy, I would suggest upping carbohydrates to steady Anna’s levels and balance her mood and psychological wellbeing.
I would check Anna’s iron and vitamin B12 levels as she is mostly vegan. The latter is exclusively within animal products. Often you need a supplement or fortified foods.
For healthy ageing, I’d suggest vitamin D and omega 3 supplements. Anna doesn’t really have oily fish, which I would recommend if she can. This is good for heart health and skin. If she doesn’t like this, I would suggest walnuts, flaxseeds and linseeds.
Should I go sugar free?
There is a war on sugar, but there’s no need to eliminate it from the diet. ‘A sugar free diet is virtually impossible and not recommended’, says Helen.
‘We need to look at the balance of a diet and where those extra calories comes from. A sugary diet comes hand in hand with fatty foods like chocolate, which are usually low in nutrients and fibre.’
Chose high fibre carbs to reach the daily fibre goal of 50g and gain a slow release of energy
It’s the balance of protein, carbs and fats that will keep you craving the sugar laiden stuff. ‘You need a good balance of macronutrients in all meals and snacks as the combination slows down the absorption and release of carbohydrates into our bloodstream’, says Helen.
‘Carbohydrates have had a lot of bad press over the years. But really they should be about 50 per cent’, she says.
Choose high fibre carbs such as quinoa, buckwheat, millet and sweet potato to reach the daily fibre goal of 50g and gain a slow release of energy. This could be as simple as swapping your morning sugary cereal for a wholegrain bran. ‘Otherwise you’re going to feel tired and in low mood’, says Helen.
A balanced meal with wholegrain carbs will sustain energy
Considering a ‘sweet tooth’, is something humans evolve to have from the moment they taste breastmilk, so how can we satisfy the primal need without going overboard on sugar?
Get smart on sugar instead
‘It’s about using sugar cleverly’, says Helen. ‘It’s almost habitual to have something sweet after dinner but it’s small changes such as having dried fruits like raisins and apricots instead of chocolate.
‘These things don’t have a halo top over them – you can’t eat a whole bag of raisins and should stick to a 30g portion. But cutting down on the refined sugars is going to be a good thing.’

Based upon all I understand about diet programs, food items restriction and also disinhibition, meals dependence tendencies are more likely owned by higher dietary restriction, body weight judgment, and also a hazardous society of food-fear compared to a chemical dependence on food items. Re Spectra's discuss Nutrisystem - $70 a full week for refined food is a rubbish from amount of money. The fact that Crossfit has actually triggered a reformation in professional durability and also conditioning in sports varying from Mixed Martial Arts (BJ Penn, George St. Pierre) to Olympic snowboarding (Eva Twardokensis) not appropriate, I suppose -specifically given that professional coaches hardly acknowledge they are utilizing Crossfit procedures. Antony Funnell: And currently from a food system producer, to a food items program developer. This form of a course develops durability without creating mass and leaves you a lot of time and energy for sporting activities. Go for it if you're stringent. Christmas Plans Hallmark Channel And Avoid People Sweat Shirt, Hoodie, Longsleeve T-shirt
Dusting off an old story, l am not sure l could read. Let me know when the Christmas Plans Hallmark Channel And Avoid People Sweat Shirt of wine story comes around again ha.  most people have nothing in moderation, I have maybe 3 coffee’s a day and about 30 teas, my fiend doesn’t drink tea and ive known her to drink 30 cups a day, yes she is hyper. Everything “too much”can be bad for u….i think up to 3 cups per day are ok.and btw coffee beans are natural source, just like herbs etc…so cant be bad for humans.
Christmas Plans Hallmark Channel And Avoid People Sweat Shirt, Hoodie, Sweater, Ladies T-Shirt
Christmas Plans Hallmark Channel Avoid People Sweat Hoodie
How about ignoring “experts” and using commonsense. Coffee has been drunk for hundreds of years. Salt eaten also chocolate and omg animal fats it’s processed muck they encouraged us to eat like margarine and artificial sweeteners that are the bad guys not blasted coffee. Coffee won’t kill anyone, if u r taking limited otherwise everything in excess will bring u to the brink of disaster.  Arsenic, botulism, and anthrax are totally natural, too. And they will totally kill you.
Christmas Plans Hallmark Channel Avoid People Sweat Shirt
These researchers get paid for nothing.. next month/year they’ll change their minds as with everything else. they are calling for rigorous clinical trials on coffee intake to find out more about the potential benefits to health. GSK saying there will be shortage of future scientists…. is it to do research like this or ground breaking sciences???? Don’t give birth because they will die one day????? I guess this is not what scientists come to science field.
Christmas Plans Hallmark Channel Avoid People Sweat Ladies Tee
Christmas Plans Hallmark Channel And Avoid People Sweat Shirt, V-Neck, Tank-Top, Long Sleeve T-Shirt
Christmas Plans Hallmark Channel Avoid People Sweat V Neck
But Prof Paul Roderick, co-author of the study said the review could not say if coffee intake had made the difference’…. so there is no story here. I wake up with an extremely low pulse every morning. Until I have coffee, I get very bad headaches just from hearing someone talk. To me, my two cups keep my heart going. Coffee maybe, but, the sugar and processed milk, probably not. Italian Expresso style is the way to go.
Christmas Plans Hallmark Channel Avoid People Sweat Tank Top
Now go and tell Starbucks to start using coffee instead of that wattered down nonsense they keep selling at ridiculous prices. Is cappucci british slang ?? Because in Italian it means a cap!! Now drinking a couple Cappuccino’s every morning is great. Why can’t some expert come out with a definite claim. It is so confusing to read contradicting reports. I was drinking coffee with a cigarette for 7 years , drinking everyday coffee will damage the teethes, and liver too.
Christmas Plans Hallmark Channel Avoid People Sweat Longsleeve Tee
That wouldn’t work here. Too many people plus you’d have to have cultural sensitivity training prior, Incase anyone was offended. Having had the opportunity to travel to many places, I would have to say that New Zealand was the most impressive country we have visited. Loved the Christmas Plans Hallmark Channel And Avoid People Sweat Shirt. Can we send her around 1000 Manus refugees for secret santa, some to live with her. Get her a world map and/or globe that shows New Zealand as many don’t.

By looking through and reviewing various prostate health supplements, we determined that best of the year is Prostatrinex. Both the favorable reviews and 3rd party reviewed ingredients showcase how effective it can be at overall prostate function. Learn about what Prostatrinex can offer by checking out our full review of it.
Top Rated Prostate Support Pills of 2017
Prostarex Ingredients and Side Effects
The supplements list is offered and it features the following:
Cholecalciferol D-Alpha-Tocopherol Acetate Pyridoxine HCI Zinc Citrate Amino Acid Chelate Beta-Sitosterol Saw Palmetto Pygeum Bark Muira Puama Horny Goat Weed Swedish Flower Pollen Stinging Nettle Soy Isoflavones L-Alanine L-Glutamic Acid L-Glycine Green Tea Leaf Quercetin Lycopene Gelatin Microcrystalline Cellulose Magnesium Stearate Silicon Dioxide
Beta-Sitosterol:  A plant derived substance found in seeds, fruits, vegetables and nuts. This can help control swelling in the prostate, and support sexual function. It is considered a reliable prostate health ingredient, which is why it is commonly used.
Pygeum Bark: African tree bark extract used to help reduce BPH which can enlarge the prostate. This is also used to help prevent nighttime urination and a lack of urine flow.
Swedish Flower Pollen: This species of pollen is intended to help support male prostate function, as well as healthy urine flow. Information on its use in clinical studies is lacking however, and most of the health claims are made by supplement companies who use it in their formulas.
Muira Puama: Aphrodisiac plant that is native to Brazil, it is used to prevent erectile dysfunction and to increase sexual desire.
Soy Isoflavones: Found naturally in soy this bioflavonoid can affect the body in numerous ways. This can include protecting cardiovascular health, bone health, and prevent early aging. Soy is often GMO though the makers of Prostarex do add how no GMO’s are added to this formula.
Quercetin: A natural flavonoid which is naturally found in fruits, vegetables tea, and wine. This can help reduce inflammation through its antioxidant benefits.
Large amounts can result in some side effects including:
Liver issues, tingling, and headaches.
Lycopene: A red chemical antioxidant which is used to protect cardiovascular health, and also support overall immune function. Though it is possibly safe in controlled amounts, scientific reviews to prove its effectiveness are lacking.
Our completed top 10 list has the best prostate health supplements that we’ve reviewed this year.
Do you know the Best Prostate Support Pills of 2017?
Prostarex Quality of Ingredients
A few untraditional ingredients are added to this blend such as muira puama and horny goat weed, which can help provide sexual enhancement benefits. Most of what is included can be effective, such as the many vitamins, minerals amino acids, and plant based extracts.
The only questionable additives are the lycopene, quercetin, and Swedish flower pollen. Particularly the Swedish flower pollen and lycopene which are lacking sufficient studies to help show what they can do for prostate health. More information is needed to help know for certain if there’s a risk for side effects.

Business of Prostarex
They go by the name of Prostarex, LLX, and their contact details are:
Phone Number: (888) 307-4790
Address: No address is offered on the official website.
Their hours of operation are provided, and their website is clear on what the functions are of Prostarex. What is confusing however is the fact that they do not offer any evidence to prove the claim that this is:
“developed by top medical doctors”
“double response prostate supplement”
It would only serve to increase its popularity if they provided the name of the professionals they hired to help come up with this. For unknown reasons they fail to publish this information.
They do say that the ingredients are reviewed in respected medical journals but this was on select additives, not on the entire Prostarex formula. This makes it sound a lot more impressive than it actually is, and it may mislead consumers into thinking that the company actually performed these studies.
The only information about the company is on their official website, and though they have no issues with the FDA, FTC, or BBB, it’s strange to see no other sources of information about the company.  There are a few copycat brands however which add a few more “x’s” to the end of Prostarex. While not technically illegal, it may confuse consumers looking to purchase a specific brand.
On the official website it does state that Prostarex is used to help provide 4 distinct steps:
Support: Improve overall prostate health and reduce enlargement.
Boost: Providing essential nutrients to help with the body’s natural functions including sexual health and overall performance.
Strengthen: Prevent sudden unexpected urination and help improve bladder function.
Prevent: Make it easier to control health so there are no later subsiding issues. This includes preventing prostate cancer and other related issues.
None of these 4 steps are backed by any clinical studies however, so there is no way to determine how the company came up with these ultimate conclusions. Without evidence there is no reason to believe it will actually offer any unique benefits.
We’ve made a list showing what the best prostate health supplements are of the year; click here to review your options.
EDITOR’S TIP: Combine this pill with a proven prostate support pill such as Prostatrinex for better results
Customer Opinions of Prostarex
Online reviews were extremely limited, here’s a few of the notable opinions found online:
“Not for me it didn’t’ work for me, my bathroom trips increased”
“It worked like it said it would, going to continue with it”
“Just OK, no more no less it was decent”
“Have to take a lot of it but it did work for me”
Only 9 total reviews were available on Amazon with 6 positive experiences and 3 negative opinions. Some who gave it a high review did admit however those results were decent but not impressive. Overall when factoring all the opinions there were few very positive experiences, must range from near neutral to simply decent.
However, when looking at any reviews there has to be a sufficient amount to determine what a likely outcome is. Without much to go on, it makes it difficult to know for certain if this would be a reliable formula, and just what is possible.
After analyzing many supplements which are used to improve prostate health, our review experts were able to craft a top 10 list.
Conclusion – Does Prostarex Work?
The base formula in Prostarex can be effective for prostate health. There are some complications however mainly with the fact that they do add some unverified ingredients which are not proven, consumer reviews are limited, and no outside information is available about the company practices. This makes it hard to know for certain if this can be trusted, especially when you factor in how mixed the reviews were. Not everyone had a positive experience and for some, it failed to deliver any noticeable change. The company does offer a great money back return policy but it’s highly questionable whenever there are claims that top medical doctors formulated a brand, yet there is no proof to prove this. More details are needed to know for certain if this can be relied upon for healthy prostate function.
We favored Prostatrinex as the best prostate health supplement for overall health. It uses a blend of all-natural ingredients added in a sufficiently high dosage strength to improve urine flow, reduce prostate enlargement, support healthy sexual male function, and nourish the prostate so it can remain healthy. Consumers also said that they noticed all the benefits to which the formula is made to support.
The company that makes it has had a reputable history and they make sure to produce this in a GMP approved facility, which is a reliable way to ensure the ingredient quality is maintained. Their official website also offers an easy to understand breakdown of what it can do, how it works, and they even highlight user testimonials. For more on Prostatrinex read our official review which is provided when you click this link.

If I'm Going to Smoke, Should I Smoke Filtered Cigarettes?
If I had to smoke a cigarette, should it have a filter?
The standard answer from a doctor is simply never have a single cigarette. Never bring your phone to bed, never have unprotected sex, never sit for eight hours at a time. Never is the directive for a lot of things that a lot of people will do more times than never.
This is a new reader-question-and-answer column that focuses on social determinants of health, and how we assess risk and make decisions. Cigarette filters are an interesting place to start because they were created and sold as a mind game. A mind game of death. I’ll start by saying clearly that no amount of inhaled smoke in any form is advisable. But the interesting thing is that smoking filtered cigarettes could actually be worse than smoking unfiltered.
That’s the opposite of the message that a generation of young smokers grew up hearing. Particularly women, to whom “light” and “ultralight” cigarettes were marketed in body-conscious terms. The approach was so successful that Marlboro had to compensate by creating the Marlboro Man, who was a cowboy who likes cigarettes. His primary mission was to convince men that the filter did not change the “man-sized taste of honest tobacco.”
It remains unclear what man-sized taste means, but it really seemed like filters could have made smoking healthier. Consider how filtered cigarettes work.
How cigarettes work (Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center)
The thing is not a complex machine. All you have to do to operate is suck on it. That sucking pulls air through little holes in the filter, and that air dilutes the smoke generated by the burning tobacco.
The end effect is supposed to be like watering down a drink. If an alcoholic person goes from drinking a bottle of wine every day to drinking a bottle that’s been half replaced with coffee, that would seem like an improvement. A weird improvement, but an improvement. Wouldn’t it?
Or would it?
A simple diagram of a cigarette omits the rest of the machine, the part to which the cigarette has to be attached (temporarily) in order to function: the human respiratory system. And even a cirgarette-to-lung model omits the rest of the machine, the brain and also the world in which this smoking person operates.
A scientist who has been assembling the entire picture is Peter Shields an oncologist and professor of medicine at Ohio State University who specializes in lung cancer. He and a team of colleagues in both medical and behavioral science have done extensive research on how smoke enters our bodies. That includes considering how the smoothness and lightness of a cigarette changes our behaviors and attitudes toward smoking.
“As people switch to cigarettes that have more holes, they take bigger puffs, longer puffs, and they smoke more cigarettes per day,” Shields explained to me. “So the way it works is, the old-style cigarettes had about 10 percent precent ventilation. And light cigarettes had about 20 percent, and then ultralight cigarettes had anywhere between 50 and 70 percent. Our view is that those 10 percent ventilation-rate cigarettes are probably more dangerous than zero percent.”
Katie Martin / The Atlantic
When filters were becoming popular in the mid-20th century, tobacco companies touted lab experiments—done on “smoking machines” that are meant to simulate human inhalation—that found that filters decrease the amount of tar per breath. But didn’t actually account for the way people behave differently with the filtered smoke. To carry over the coffee-wine example, it’s like if we forget to consider the effect of coffee on the human body. Maybe the person ends up wired and anxious, and so desires only more wine, and ends up drinking three bottles of this horrible coffee-wine concoction.
Since 2009 it has been illegal to market cigarettes as “low” or “light” or “mild.” There are ongoing class-action lawsuits in multiple states awarding money to people who bought these products under the belief that they were less detrimental to the body. But it has taken decades for the effects of these products to come to light.
“There’s evidence that the tobacco industry understood back in the 1970s that they were making a more dangerous product,” said Shield. “The products would fool the smoking machines, and so they could be advertised as healthier. Smokers would get a ‘smoother’ smoke and believe it. And the public-health community would endorse it—at least a step in the right direction—because they had a lower tar yield.”
Tar yield is a term d’art in cigarette research that rarely makes it to consumer marketing. (If it did it might say something like “Low tar yield! Nice!”) A group of researchers at MIT and Massachusetts General Hospital found no difference in cancer rates between people who smoked medium-tar, low-tar, and very-low tar cigarettes. People who smoke cigarettes with very high tar yields did have higher rates of lung cancer than other smokers, though the scientists concluded that “may reflect unmeasured differences between smokers of non-filter and filter cigarettes,” and that introducing filtered cigarettes to people who are already smoking a lot of unfiltered cigarettes would likely have “limited public-health benefits.”
I asked some friends who smoke constantly if there is a belief in the young-smoker community that filtered cigarettes are healthier, and the consensus was nah. “Nah, just less gross/wet/prone to tobacco in the teeth,” Amy Rose Spiegel wrote to me. “Most normals find unfiltered a little bleck, but there are exceptions if you roll your own and/or are a young but weathered rancher/caballero.”
Katie Martin / The Atlantict
By wet she was referring to the fact that filters are made to withstand dissolving in saliva—which means they linger on city streets and pile up on highways even while the rest of the cigarettes quickly dissolve and disintegrate. The global landscape would look dramatically different if cigarette filters fell out of use. The money saved cleaning them up could be put to other use in bettering communities, the benefits of which are incalculable.
Where was I? Oh yes. Even if the industry-generated health halo were totally dissolved by now, given the choice between smoking ten filtered cigarettes per day or ten unfiltered, Shields believes people would probably be better off with the filterless. This is in part because he’s been tracking a curious rise in lung cancer that correlates well with the rise of filtered cigarettes. A 2014 report from U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy on smoking concluded that changing cigarette designs have caused an increase in lung adenocarcinomas, and Murthy implicated cigarette filters.
Shields and many others believe that because the smoothness of the smoke means people tend to take deeper breaths and hold them longer, and this pulls the smoke deeper into the lungs, this really changes the exposure to the compounds in the smoke. It’s not just a different dose of carcinogenic exposure; it’s a different dose being delivered to a different part of the lungs for a different amount of time. And the effects of this can’t be really well predicted by lab studies done on smoking machines. Even a small change in these exposures could mean a huge difference when played out over the lifetimes of millions of people who smoke thousands of cigarettes every year.
So to the question at hand, what are real human people—and the health professionals who advise them—to do? The marketing messages have made all of this very confusing, and I’m not sure how much I’ve done to help. But Shields sees a clear way forward for everyone, and it involves assigning no blame, and laying on no one the psychic burden of choosing between two ways of giving oneself cancer.
Katie Martin / The Atlantic
“It doesn’t matter so much if you want to say that the tobacco companies knew something or didn't know something, or if they were at fault or not, or if they need to be moral or socially responsible or not,”  he said. “The FDA has the authority to make tobacco companies take the holes off. There’s no public-health value to the holes. There’s at least some harm to the holes—even if you don't buy the whole adenocarcinoma thing.”
There is some debate among scientists on the role of filters in the rise of these cancers, with others pegging it to increasing amounts of substances called nitrosamines in tobacco. According to Shields, beliefs vary depending on on what they’ve been studying for the last 20 or 30 years. “The tobacco-specific nitrosamines people think it’s all about nitrosamines, and the ventilation people thing is all about ventilation”
“But the fact is it doesn't matter. If the FDA has evidence for either one of them or both they can regulate both. They don’t have to make a choice.” After a pause, he reconsidered. “I guess maybe with the Trump administration, where are you for every regulation you pass you have to take out two, maybe you do have to make a choice.”

5 Hawthorn Berry Health Benefits
5 Hawthorn Berry Health Benefits draxe.com | April 15, 2017 01:00 AM Hawthorn is often called “the heart herb” for its various cardio-protective abilities.Prized for its ability to uplift and strengthen the heart both emotionally and physically ,  the hawthorn berry has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for all kinds of serious heart concerns. These include angina, high blood pressure , hardening of the arteries, irregular heart beat and even congestive heart failure. In fact, hawthorn has been used to treat heart disease all the way back to the first century! Fast forward to the early 1800s and doctors in the United States were using this medicinal herb for respiratory and circulatory health disorders as well. ( 1 ) Hawthorn fruit, leaves and flowers are all used medicinally today. Hawthorn fruit comes in the form of little red berries. Native American tribes enjoyed eating them and they also used hawthorn to treat heart troubles, as well as gastrointestinal complaints. ( 2 ) What makes hawthorn berries so medicinal? It appears to be their numerous flavonoids for starters. Flavonoids are potent antioxidants known to effectively decrease inflammation while boosting immune function. Eating a diet high in flavonoid-rich foods, beverages and herbs  has been linked to prevention of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases as well as cancer. ( 3 ) Let’s look closer at exactly how a tiny little hawthorn berry can actually make huge improvements in many people’s health. Hawthorn Berry Plant Origin and Chemical Components The hawthorn bush, also called thornapple or May-tree, is a deciduous plant. It is a member of the rose family (Rosaceae) belonging to the genus  Crataegus . Hawthorn can come in the form of a thorny hawthorn bush or a hawthorn tree. Most of the time, you can find hawthorn growing along the sides of sunny wooded hills. There are various species of hawthorn, many of which are found in North America. ( 4 ) A hawthorn plant has berries as well as flowers that bloom in May. Hawthorn flowers are red, pink or white. The petite hawthorn berries appear after the flowers have bloomed. When the hawthorn berries fully ripen, they are typically red in color, but sometimes they are black. These berries are edible. How do they taste? Most people describe hawthorn berries as a mix of sweet and sour. Here are just some of the many chemical compounds and nutrients found in hawthorn: ( 7 ) Flavonoids, including hyperoside Quercetin Vitexin Rutin Pentacyclic triterpenes Acantolic acid Neotegolic acid Choline Acetylcholine Chlorogenic acid Caffeic acid Vitamin B1 Vitamin B2 Vitamin C Calcium Iron Phosphorus 5 Hawthorn Berry Health Benefits 1. Major Heart Concerns Hawthorn berry is best known for its helpful toning effects on the heart. As a “cardiotonic herb,” hawthorn has shown itself to be impressively helpful for all kinds of serious heart concerns. These include heart failure, heart disease, angina pectoris, changes in cardiac rhythm, and atherosclerosis. † According to a 2016 study published in the journal Current Medicinal Chemistry , hawthorn’s powerful heart benefits come from its high polyphenolic content. ( 8 ) To date, research has shown that hawthorn can even have a helpful effect on congestive heart failure (CHF). Multiple studies have shown that hawthorn supplementation has resulted in improved in cardiac function based on a number of parameters. These parameters include blood pressure , heart rate, cardiac output and exercise tolerance. One trial in particular gave 78 patients with NYHA Class II heart failure a commercial preparation of hawthorn leaves and flowers. After two months, the patients receiving 200 milligrams of hawthorn three times per day had an increased working heart capacity, as well as a reduction in symptoms. The hawthorn group also showed a decrease in systolic blood pressure during physical activity. Another German study also showed that a hawthorn extract (LI132 Faros®) worked nearly as well as a prescription heart failure drug (captopril). And, the hawthorn extract had fewer side effects. ( 9 ) Another cohort study of 952 patients with heart failure (NYHA II) had subjects take a hawthorn ( Crataegus ) special extract either alone or as an add-on to conventional treatment. After two years, fatigue, stress dyspnoea and palpitations (the three main symptoms of heart failure) were all significantly decreased in the group who took the hawthorn compared to the group who did not take hawthorn. ( 10 ) 2. Blood Pressure Many herbal practitioners recommend hawthorn berries, flowers and leaves as natural blood pressure reducers. † A scientific study published in The British Journal of General Practice had 79 type 2 diabetic patients either take 1200 milligrams of hawthorn extract daily or a placebo for a total of 16 weeks. Hypotensive drugs were also taken by 71 percent of the study participants. What did they find? The hawthorn group experienced greater reductions in diastolic blood pressure. But, there was no group differences in systolic blood pressure reduction. ( 11 ) Hopefully more studies to back up hawthorn’s usage in lowering blood pressure are coming soon. 3. Chest Pain (Angina) and Heart Disease Decreased blood flow to the heart causes chest pain known as angina. Sometimes it is confused with indigestion. But, true angina can be a symptom of coronary heart disease . So far, research is showing that hawthorn may be an effective natural remedy for avoiding and treating angina. † According to a scientific article published in the Journal of Herbal Medicine and Toxicology , hawthorn’s bioflavonoids help to dilate both peripheral and coronary blood vessels. This can improve blood flow to the heart, making hawthorn very useful for angina. Hawthorn’s proanthocyanidins are also believed to reduce tension of the blood vessel walls. Again, this is very helpful to discourage angina. ( 12 ) In one study, 80 subjects (aged 45 to 65 years) with stable angina pectoris were randomly divided into four groups. The first group was the aerobic exercise group. The second group took a hawthorn extract. The third group did aerobic exercise, plus they took a hawthorn extract. Finally, the fourth group was the control group. After 12 weeks, the researchers found that the combination of aerobic exercise and hawthorn supplementation were “an effective complementary strategy to significantly lower the risk of atherosclerosis and heart problems.” ( 13 ) 4. High Cholesterol Animal studies have shown that hawthorn berry extract may be a helpful natural remedy for the reduction of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol from the body. In China, hawthorn is called “Shan-Zha.” A study using animal subjects showed some really impressive health results from an ethanol extract of Zhongtian hawthorn, a cultivar of wild Shan-Zha, which has larger hawthorn fruit. This 2016 study revealed that the hawthorn berry extract not only reduced overall high cholesterol levels, it also notably decreased LDL cholesterol, liver cholesterol and triglycerides as well as body weight. ( 14 ) 5. Overall Health Improver Scientific research conducted in 2008 revealed that hawthorn berry extract is excellent at decreasing inflammation. This is huge for health since we know that inflammation is at the root of most diseases. The research also shows that the extract of hawthorn berry is a free radical scavenger. This is extremely beneficial to human health since free radicals can cause cellular damage (including DNA damage) by stealing electrons through a process called oxidation. The 2008 animal study also demonstrated how hawthorn berry extract has protective effects for the gastrointestinal system and it appears to successfully kill off various types of unwanted bacteria. ( 15 ) History & Interesting Facts Hawthorn’s berries, leaves and flowers are all used medicinally. Crataegus species like hawthorn are native to temperate regions of North American and Europe. Hawthorn has flowers that grow in small white, red or pink clusters. When Jesus was crucified, the crown of thorns on his head is believed to have been made from the hawthorn tree. ( 16 ) Early records indicate that the hawthorn tree was a symbol of love. The sweet and tangy red berries of the hawthorn plant are used to make jams, jellies, wines and cordials. Many species of hawthorn are used to make bonsai trees. ( 17 ) How to Select and Use Hawthorn Berry How can you incorporate hawthorn berries into your life? There are a few options. You can opt for hawthorn berry tea, either prepackaged or loose. Loose hawthorn berries can often be purchased in the bulk section of many health food stores. You can also pick up a hawthorn supplement in the form of a capsule or a hawthorn extract in liquid tincture form. So far, safe hawthorn doses appear to be between 160 to 1,800 milligrams per day for a three to 24 week time period. Noticeable improvement in symptoms may take six to 12 weeks. ( 18 ) Possible Side Effects and Interactions You should not take hawthorn if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Do not give hawthorn products to children. Supplementing with hawthorn is recommended for short-term use by adults. If any symptoms get worse when taking hawthorn, you should discontinue use and seek emergency medical care. For some users, hawthorn can cause nausea, upset stomach, fatigue, sweating, headache, dizziness, palpitations, nosebleeds, insomnia , agitation and other side effects. While hawthorn is known for being excellent for the heart, it can interact with prescription medications taken for heart disease. Medications for other heart concerns, high blood pressure and male sexual dysfunction are also known to interact with hawthorn. Some specific medications known to possibly interact with hawthorn include digoxin, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers (CCBs), nitrates, phenylephrine and phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors. If you have heart disease or any other health condition or are currently taking medication(s), check with your doctor before taking a hawthorn berry product or any other hawthorn supplement. ( 19 , 20 ) It is also important to note that heart failure is a very serious health condition. It’s best not to self-treat with hawthorn supplements if you suffer from this condition. Final Thoughts Hawthorn is best known as a cardiotonic herb. This basically means that it can do wonderful things for the heart. Studies show that the small but mighty hawthorn berry is loaded with health boosting properties. These properties can help a range of chronic health problems from high cholesterol to angina. One of my favorite ways to start adding a moderate amount of hawthorn to a healthy lifestyle is having a cup of hawthorn berry tea. Of course, you should not take heart problems lightly. And, you should definitely speak to your doctor before incorporating hawthorn into your treatment plan. †These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
