He Ruined My Sister's Only Birth Experience So I Made Sure He'd NEVER Forget Her

Kinda my revenge, kinda my sisters, both of us really proud. This is gonna be long so TL;DR at bottom. Here's our cast:

My sister - we'll call her "Sara" for the story Sister's Ex-BF - "Paul" Ex-BFs New Wife - "Jane" Ex-BFs Parents - "Mr. And Mrs. Doe" Oldest brother - "Zeke" Our parents And Me :)

When I was 14 and my oldest sister, Sara, was 22 we found out that she was pregnant with Paul, her boyfriend of 4 years. They immediately got engaged and they were really happy. For a time. Sara had a horrible pregnancy, about 16-18 weeks in the "wonder of creating a human life" evaporated within her. She developed hyperemesis (which if you don't know is really bad morning sickness), she was constantly in pain, she developed gestational diabetes, and just all around hated the experience. Around this time Paul, the then-fiance, started getting sick of the complaining. I believe the argument was "your body is built to do this, it can't be that bad".

Sara was due around Valentine's Day and Paul's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Doe, were very excited, both about the grandkid and the fact that he could be born on a holiday. She was very against that and really really hoped that her son wouldn't be born on a holiday, even one as small as Valentine's day (her birthday sometimes falls on Easter and she hates it) because it might make him feel that "his day" isn't very much about him. Well, Mrs. Doe says something like "Well if you name him Valentine or Valentino then that'll make the day even more special to him!" Again, sister HATED the idea. She thought it was tacky, he'd be bullied for it, and just really didn't like the name Valentino. Paul loved it, but agreed to go with a more average name like Daniel or Jared.

Fast forward to February and she was ready to Get This Over With. Sara had officially been put on bed rest because while standing or walking her blood pressure took unexpected spikes and dips. I look back now and goodness do I feel bad for her. She was doing her best to avoid giving birth on Valentine's day because, again, she didn't want him born on a holiday. Unfortunately, births happen when they happen and that baby was going to come on Valentines day whether she wanted him to or not.

I remember waiting out in the waiting room with my dad, brothers, and Paul who couldn't stand to be in the delivery room because it was "gross". I was so mad that he could have gone in but wouldn't because he thought my sister was "gross" while giving birth, whereas I had to stay outside because I was "too young" to go in with my mom and other sister. Dad went home with the youngest two brothers while the oldest, Zeke, stayed to watch me because I refused to leave. 16 hours after Sara went into labor my little nephew was officially part of the family on the evening of Valentine's day.

Unfortunately, Sara was not okay. She had to have an emergency cesarean section and while doing the operation discovered that the back of her uterus (facing her spinal cord) had a very large and very severe (thankfully non-cancerous) tumor. When I say large I mean it was twice the size of a standard uterus. The doctors were shocked and didn't understand why nobody had noticed it on an ultrasound. It accounted for her severe backpain and blood pressure issues. The doctors immediately went in for more surgery to remove the tumor, but sadly ended up having to perform a full hysterectomy. This meant that my nephew would be Sara's only child.

Now while Sara was in for surgery Paul was taking care of everything baby related to make sure his son was okay. In my 14 year old self's memory I remember him being suitably distraught, but I didn't really pay him much mind and spent my time in the waiting room with my mother and other sister. Zeke, however, wanted to be a good future brother-in-law and make sure that Paul was okay. He found Paul filling out the baby paperwork on his own looking (in my brother's words) "like he had not a single worry in his mind". Zeke asked why Paul didn't wait for Sara to fill out the paperwork as she should have been put of surgery within the hour, and Paul said that he just wanted her to get her rest and heal. That checked out with Zeke, as he was 16 and didn't know any better at the time.

Now I know what you're probably thinking. "No, he wouldn't. He knows how much she hates that name. And still, she'd need to sign the paperwork too!" My fellow peoples of Reddit, I regret to inform you that Paul forged Sara's signature on the paperwork and waited until she was out of surgery to hand said paperwork over. My sweet nephew, that was born on Valentine's day, was named "Valentino" on his first official birth certificate. I still to this day don't know why Paul and his family were so insistent about the name. He had even picked out a different one with my sister! And before you ask, no he was never brought up on forgery charges because his parents were "witnesses" to her signing the papers, even though they only got there at the last minute.

So Sara dumped him and got her son's name changed a month later. She was willing to do split custody with him because that's her son's father and she wants the kid to know him, but Paul vanished and she never heard anything back, which seemed weirdly out of character to us. Until a mutual friend on Facebook was tagged in his wedding pictures 6 months later. Paul had apparently started cheating on her not long after she got pregnant. Sara was livid but there wasn't much she could do so she filed for child support and continued to liver her best life.

Until 6 years later. This is where the revenge starts, my friends. So Sara has been a single mother for the past 6 years and has been amazing at it. At this point in my career I've been a hairdresser for about 8 months at our local GreatClips. I'm working one day and who is seated before me but Jane, Paul's wife, herself. I take her back for a trim and she clearly has no idea who I am. That adds up because a mutual friend that still keeps in contact with Paul said that Jane doesn't know a thing. She has no idea about Sara, that she was the other woman, or that Paul actually has a kid that he's been (infrequently) paying child support for. She's in the dark on it all.

I told myself not to be an ass and treat her like a normal customer, which I did. Now at this point, Jane was heavily pregnant, so a lot of our conversation was about that. She loved being pregnant but it was hard, her husband was so unsympathetic (big shocker), and she was due in 10 weeks and they still hadn't picked out a name for their baby girl.

Ladies and gentlepeoples, this was my chance.

I asked what kind of name she was looking for and she said "I want something unique and unusual, but not ridiculous like Brayntleigheigh" (you know the ones I'm talking about) and Paul had suggested so many already and she didn't like ANY of them. So I, conniving little weasel I am, said "what about Sara?"

My sister's name isn't actually "Sara" she was named after an older family member that passed not long after she was born, but there was no female equivalent for his name so our parents created one. It's a beautiful name and just what Jane was looking for.

She loved it, she stuck by it, and I found out by stalking her Facebook months later that she had put her foot down about it and that was their daughter's name. Now Paul has a daughter with his ex's name to remind him every day about her (and to also remind him to pay his ******* child support).

Little nephew is 10 years old now with a new name and no contact with his biological father, though we do still sometimes call him Val as a family nickname. He likes it but doesn't want to bring it to school so it's staying a family nickname. Sara pretends to hate when we call him that, in a joking way. As long as he likes it she doesn't have a problem with it. And she's seeing a new guy who's really great and like a father to Val. :)

TL;DR: My sister's baby daddy forged her signature on paperwork while she was in surgery to name their son a name that she had been avidly against from the beginning, then broke all contact when she dumped him and married the girl he was cheating on her with while she was pregnant. 6 years later I meet his wife and convince her to name her daughter my sister's name because the wife has no idea my sister and her son exist.

They meet the local rebel cell spearheaded by the former Republic admiral, Jax Beneb, who seeks to destroy the Empire’s occupation that was aggressively imposed upon while exploiting the planet of its natural resources. A plan is devised to destroy the Imperial’s main base of operations—as well as their influence—in the planet; however, it was a do-or-die mission that you and Cal had gotten yourselves caught in.

Cal reluctantly left the structure with his companions. Throughout the entire exit, the Jedi never spoke a word, Larki and Morzen could do nothing but glance at him every once in a while until they mounted their speeders again.

Not even BD-1 himself could get a response from his owner.

Throughout their exit from the structure, Cal spoke nothing. Larki and Morzen could only catch a glimpse of the Jedi, neither of them can say something of value to him—perhaps nothing at all. The three of them mounted their speeders and without even waiting for the two, Cal revs up the engine of his bike and sped out. Fortunately, Larki was able to catch up as soon as his own speeder sputtered to life.

The small search party returned to the temple ruins, as they were told by Cere via comlink in the middle of their drive. Cal’s entrance rattled some of the rebels loitering within the ruins’ vicinity, Cere included; when she saw that the headcount remained the same as they left, her heart sank to the pit of her stomach.

“Cal, where is [Y/N]?”

Silence. Cal’s eyes drooped, avoiding eye contact with Cere.

“Cal, where is [Y/N]?” Cere spoke through her clenched teeth while her fists shook with a confusion of anger, worry, and fear.

“T-This…” Cal stammered, unfolding his fingers to show the bracelet to Cere, which she instantly recognizes to be yours.

“That’s all they found?” the woman’s voice cracked.

Cere covered her gaping mouth with trembling hands, in full shock of the discovery, and her breathing became shaky. Her hands fell to her chest, as if her heart’s about to burst through her ribcage. Eventually, Merrin and Greez were drawn to the scene, quickly, the Nightsister spotted the trinket in Cal’s hand; she held her gasp and her eyebrows furrowed, she brought her hands to her mouth but they stopped at her chest.

Greez worriedly uttered your name.

Cal was given time to be alone. He stayed in one of the chambers of the temple that served as a sleeping quarters. For the rest of the day, Cal was exempted from strategy conferences by the grace of the empathetic Jax. The grief-stricken Jedi never let go of your bracelet, however, he was unresponsive even to the little boy staring at him as he sits on the floor in the far corner of the room.

BD-1 chirps and beeps from time to time, trying to fish a word out of Cal, but he would speak very little.

“She’s not gone, BD… I know it. So, why don’t they believe me? They look like they don’t,” Cal’s eyes trailed, aligning it with BD who’s nestled on the space between his crossed legs. “I’m not crazy, aren’t I?”

The little droid shook its head in reply, BD-1 nudged your bracelet with his head’s visor, followed by a sad, long beep that faded out. The hours felt like only minutes to the boy, he leaned his head against the cold, cobblestone wall and eventually dozed off.

That night, Cere personally went to the Cal’s room with a tray of food. Cal has lost track of the time that he didn’t wake in time for dinner. It was BD-1 who sensed Cere coming into the room, a quiet chirp emitted from the droid, and the woman carefully walked into his bedroom to set the tray down on a podium. Even upon her presence, Cal didn’t wake up; Cere’s eyes wandered to his open hand, one cord of the bracelet dangles out of his palm. She took a deep sigh and didn’t bother waking up to remind him to eat.

“Keep an eye out for him, BD, please…” she softly pleaded and then left. “And tell him to eat when he wakes.”

A good chunk of minutes passed after she left the room and Cal finally wakes. He blinks several times until his eyes adjusted to the darkness of the room in the moonless night; the first thing he notices is the power lamp sitting next to his futon built from straw, animal hide, and mismatched pieces of cloth sewn together.

“Hey, BD… dozed for a long time, haven’t I?”

“Boo!” BD nodded and then gestured to the tray that Cere had left.

Cal’s stomach ferociously growled when his nostrils flared upon picking up the scent of the food—albeit having gone cold for a time. The rations weren’t exactly a culinary art, neither was it a cuisine, but it was enough to sate an empty stomach—the adrenaline from earlier had dulled Cal of his senses and awareness of the goings-on in his body, only then was he starting to realize just how hungry he is.

Cere had sneakily doubled the servings for each food type she’s prepared for Cal: three scoops of Lemus corn, a bowl of bone broth nearly filled to the brim, and two turkey drumsticks—instead of one as imposed by Jax to conserve rations per headcount.

“Looks like the fighters must’ve looted the Imps’ storehouse, huh?”

“Woo!”

The Jedi scrambled towards the food and helped himself, however, he didn’t exactly scarf down whatever’s on the platter. He only ate what he wanted and had some leftovers. He dismissed it and returned the tray on the podium.

The Inquisitors, Seventh Sister and Fifth Brother, charted a course to one of the Imperial medical outposts and also their satellite fortress—a smaller likeness of their stronghold like that of the one in Nur—in Mons Golotha, a moon situated in the Outer Rim.

“We are bound to Mons Golotha in T-Minus 35 minutes, Seventh Sister,” reported the command ship’s admiral.

“Good, have them prepare a medical capsule for the bodies we’ve recovered—for immediate transfer.”

The admiral bowed in compliance and returned to overseeing the cadets on their computers.

The pair strode in exit of the bridge and to the command ship’s cramped medical bay. The Fifth Brother sensed the Mirialan’s thoughts dwelling on you.

“What’s on your mind, Sister?”

“The girl’s an intriguing subject. She’s going to be very busy in her interrogation when she wakes,”

“If she wakes,” reiterated the Fifth Brother.

There was silence between them as they marched through the corridors. Crew members avoid eye contact as much as possible from the Inquisitors in any way doable—tipping the rims of their uniform caps downwards so their eyes are obscured, others would maintain eye contact while speaking even though they caught the Seventh Sister giving them a passing glance when she entered their periphery.

The pair didn’t mind their fear of them, it was insignificant of them to pick up every single thought and feeling flooding this corridor.

Upon their arrival to the moon, Mons Golotha, they were instantly given confirmation to land and instructed whoever’s capable to transfer the patients from the medical bay to the shuttle for their descent to the surface. A couple of medical specialists assigned in the medbay helped in settling both you and the Second Brother in your own medical capsules, the 2-1B medical droid meticulously configured the control panels of both pods to the optimum setting for each one’s survival from the descent until the complete transfer.

From one medical specialist to another, you and the Second Brother were handed over. While being escorted to your rooms, the doctors and nurses were performing their SOPs in bringing in emergency patients.

“Both of them are in a vegetative state, but he’s in a more critical state. I want an operating table prepped for him and a Bacta tank filled to the brim—infused with antibiotics for his second to third degree burns. This surgery is strongly required pre-Bacta treatment.” Barked one of the doctors who led the way while the Inquisitor pair flanked them.

“The girl’s vitals are stable. I have a heartbeat! Blood pressure is low though, she’s suffering from minor concussions and burns,” diagnosed a second doctor who stood close to your own gurney. “Prepare a Bacta tank for her as well, infuse it with a mild painkiller and antibiotics for her burns so they won’t infect and blister.”

The nurses rushed to comply with the doctors’ orders. Your doctor was astounded with your body’s physical resilience, he wagered it was your fight-or-flight response or your self-preservation instincts despite lying down on the brink of unconsciousness—seconds before the Fifth Brother picked you up and spotted you. He may have not seen what happened to you, but he was sure that you were a fighter—perhaps even more of a fighter than the Second Brother, dare he thinks!

“Alright now, you little darling, let’s get you patched up.”

The female nurses strip you off of your soiled and scorched clothes, washed off the grime and soot that stuck to your skin and face, and attached the apparatus necessary for your body before submerging you to the vat of Bacta.

“How long will they be submerged?” asked the Fifth Brother to the Second Brother’s attending physician.

“That depends on their case, really. In his case, since he’s the most severely injured, it may take him weeks to recover fully—better if he regains consciousness in the middle of his treatment,”

“And…” the gray humanoids jerks his head to you in the tank. “What of her?”

“Well, evidently, her wounds are less fatal compared to the other patient. However, we are detecting some signs of internal bleeding. Recovery may take weeks as well, but perhaps it’ll be shorter for her.”

“Will she have regained her strength when she wakes up?” the Mirialan interjected.

“All of that will be determined on the amount of time she’ll use for rest and recovery,”

The Mirialan hummed and dismissed herself to the doctors. She contacted the Grand Inquisitors in private, reporting the diagnoses of the doctors for both you and the Second Brother, and your involvement with the rebel cell that they’ve encountered in Pevera.

“We found one of the Jedi helping the rebels, m’lord,” reported the Seventh Sister. “But she’s still being taken care of here.”

“Good, let her body relish the remainder of her days where she will not yet feel any pain and anguish,” the Grand Inquisitor snarled through the small hologram projection on the Seventh Sister’s holodisk. “She will answer to us the moment she opens her eyes.”

“The girl is a survivor—a better one than the Second Brother, he didn’t have it easy. I sense something in her, something familiar,”

“Oh? How intriguing,” the Grand Inquisitor took the bait. “I should like to hear what you have to say about this girl, Seventh Sister.”

“Yes, m’lord,”

“See to it that she recovers in her treatment, she has a lot to answer for us,” the Grand Inquisitor added before his hologram fizzled out.

The doctors and their companion medical droids worked on the Second Brother’s surgery meticulously and tirelessly. They picked up a pulse from him and then began their procedure. It was a gruesome image, even for the droids.

For one, a large patch of burnt flesh stands out from the Second Brother’s scarred, olive skin. It covered his left shoulder down to the left half of his torso. Shards and portions of his clothing—both the undershirt and the armor plates—have melted and stuck to his skin, tools were required to separate debris from the flesh. A string of viscous pus connected the removed shrapnel and his blistering, black and red skin. Bodily fluids oozed out from every orifice conceivable on his wounds—throughout the operation, he’s partially conscious, flinching on particular moments where the droids would prod their syringes and quite-delicate mandibles on his skin.

“I sense his hate, even in his dormant state,” the Fifth Brother commented as they watch the operation.

“Likewise. Last I heard, these two were fighting. I’m certain he’ll be most hostile towards her,”

“I checked the database,” the Fifth Brother huffed, and a curious Seventh Sister craned her head to face him. “I found her in the records: [Y/N] [L/N]. Another Jedi survivor, in hiding until she apparently joined the rebels with the other Jedi—Cere Junda and Cal Kestis—and then the Second Brother engaged her while trying to infiltrate the stronghold with the rebels.”

“They’re all the same,” the Mirialan scoffed.

The Inquisitors watched the doctors do their work until the surgeons have finished their job on the Second Brothers and then he was dropped into the tank. The two of you were being observed by the Seventh Sister and Fifth Brother, she watched the two of you bobbing in the liquid substance like apples in a bucket.

“Doctor, do whatever it takes to speed up the girl’s recovery period. We want her conscious as soon as possible,”

“B-But… Seventh Sister, we haven’t even carefully observed her wounds and their fatalities on her body!”

“Unless you want to be the one strapped to the Imperial torture chair, I suggest you do your job faster,”

“Y-Yes… m-madam.”

The Fifth Brother has gotten the hint of the Seventh Sister’s other plans for you. He’s been sensing it running in her mind ever since.

“Do you think she’ll get the Grand Inquisitor’s attention—even Lord Vader?”

The Mirialan girl turned to the gray humanoid, having to tilt her head back to emphasize their height difference, she smirked.

“I don’t doubt it,”

“And if she refuses?”

The smirked retained. Seventh Sister seemed to be amused to answer his question.

“Well, I think we can persuade her,” she pans her head to your tank: sections of hair floating about like soft tendrils, closed eyes yet bursting with life the open they shoot open, and a weakened spirit that she perceives as a blank slate. “One way or another.”

The Long Game: Part 1

Notes: The reader, codenamed Grace, is one of Kamski’s favorite pets. There is a significant past to having gotten there that will be described using flashbacks (set in italics), but the majority of this story takes place on the Reader’s actual mission.

Part 1:

           You sat quietly on the cold metal chair, listening to the air conditioner pump more frigid air into the space. The room was lit with overly bright white lighting, but it was something you were used to. This was the room you were always taken to when you were being given a new assignment. The file thudded onto the table; significantly heavier than the files you were used to seeing come across the steel surface.

           “It’s bigger than normal.”

           It was certainly bigger than the first target file you’d ever read. That was a job tailored specifically to test your ability to take out an unwitting (though paranoid) target with stealth and precision. Their mistake was giving you something too easy. You’d completed the mission in only an afternoon and came back to base with the kill confirmation and not a scratch on you; a feat most of your training classmates were unable to master. Kamski had been impressed. He said he wanted to test you further, asked if you’d be interested in moving up in his ranks, and for better or worse, you’d agreed.

           “That’s because it’s two targets,” Your handler stated coldly as he opened the file in front of you.

           That was nothing new for you. You’d taken out an entire gang once when your boss decided they’d offended him. It was part of the “testing” he’d proposed. The orders came down the pipeline from Kamski himself that you’d be taking out a “little gang” for him. ‘Little’ was hardly the word for it. You’d been dropped into the middle of a meeting for an Italian mafia branch that had wormed its way out of Chicago, and it wasn’t until after you were announced as “one of Kamski’s rats” that you discovered you’d been supplied faulty weapons. You returned to base more than worse for wear, and Kamski had passed it off with a wave of his hand.

           “How will she learn what not to do if she never gets a little banged up?” He’d said.

           You could’ve killed him in that moment if you hadn’t been fading under an anesthetic for surgery to fix your shattered shoulder blade.

           “They’re two of Stern’s guys that have gone AWOL.”

           Oh.

           “Kamski wants to send you in as a ‘show of good faith’ to Stern.”

           You looked over the two nearly identical photos, taking note of their miniscule features and memorizing the faces of your targets.

           Your handler continued, “They’re numbers eight and nine-hundred in SIA’s RK series, so-”

           “So, they’ll be tough. I get it, Reed.”

           Tough wasn’t even the start with the RK series. You’d only ever met one person with RK training from Stern’s agency, and he was nothing to scoff at, especially not since you’d seen him in action.

           He slammed his hand on the table in front of you. “Shut up, we’re not done with this brief.” He pulled a chair up to the table across from you and sat down backwards with his arms crossed over the backrest. “You’ll need to terminate them both to complete this mission, and as per usual, you don’t come back until you have the kill confirmation.”

           “Mm,” You hummed, somewhere between bored and skeptical, “Why me? Guys with this kind of training take out whole squads by themselves, so why is Kamski sending me alone?”

           “Fuck if I know. Kamski seems to think you can handle it, so you’re going.”

           You snorted. “Yeah, is this one of the ones where they’re planning ahead of time to restart my heart?”

           “It’s been two years since the last time they had to do that.”

           Eighteen months, asshole, and it hurts every time.

           “One of these days I’m not going to wake up from that.” You snarked.

           “Then stop dying on the job.”

           Your snort was audible.

           Never had it been your fault that you’d died on a job, in fact you’d only once been dead on arrival back to base. That was when Kamski had decided he’d rather fund a way to bring you back from the dead than fund the training to make a new you. He’d called in a doctor called Zlatko; a man with an unprecedented talent for unethical medical practice. The mangled scar on your chest marked the location of the rigged defibrillator that had been used against you as a ‘reset button’ on more than one occasion.

           “Tell you what though, you make it back from this one, I’ll make sure Kamski gives you a break. You’ve more than earned it.”

           “Not interested.” You waived him off with your hand as you stood up, knowing your briefing was over.

           “The fuck are you talking about?”

           “I’m not allowed out except on jobs; you think I’d rather be bored in my quarters than working?”

           “You could always stay with me.”

           You covered your laugh with a cough and cleared your throat as you regained your composure.

           Reed looked offended. “What was that?”

           You could only shake your head before replying, “Come on, Reed, you’re not serious.”

           “Why wouldn’t I be?”

           “That’s not what this is, and you know it.”

           He stood up from his chair, “Then you tell me what it is, Y/l/n.”

           “Stress relief; a booty call at best. And don’t call me that.” You stared the man down as he approached you.

           “Wouldn’t be the first time we’ve broken the boss’s rules.” Reed grabbed your hip and pulled you into him.

           “Won’t be the last, I’m sure.” You quipped when you felt your back press into the wall behind you.

           “Mm,” He hummed appreciatively as he pulled you up to wrap your legs around his waist and started pulling at your shirt.

I’ve arrived and settled into the room provided.

The targets are located in a small hotel across the street, locally owned to decrease their footprint in the area. I am yet to assess a routine, however, based on surrounding surveillance footage, the targets appear to be spending the majority of their time indoors with minimal contact to the outside world.

You were the big brother he never had and the father he always wanted. He is miserable. Miserable enough to call Lisa the first night he gets to Dijon to meet with him. Miserable enough to come back home knowing that his best friend hates him. Miserable enough to sit at a table with half of the people he cares about not there because of him. “I agree with you, Joon. Lisa deserves so much better and I have tried time and time again to reach out to her, but she won’t answer my calls. You and Jin are the only two people who she speaks to, she avoids us like the plague and didn’t even have the decency to tell Hoseok she wanted to switch gyms until the last minute when she knew they needed her for competition. But the second Jungkook is in town she drops everything she’s going to see him. She is a grown woman. I’m mad at them both. Stop making the boy feel guilty for breaking up with someone.”

“Lisa is not ‘just someone’ Min Yoongi,” Namjoon picked up his cigarettes, slung his duffel bag over his shoulder, and walked away, roughly shoulder swiping Yoongi on his way out. “Have a nice time at dinner. Hope your new boy toy doesn’t end up like the last.”

“Go fuck yourself,” Yoongi replied, but the door was already slamming shut.

Yoongi checked his appearance in the car mirror once again. His hair had been tied up to hide how awful it looked after wearing a beanie for the entire show, and he was still skeptical of his makeup. He never did the best job when he was angry. After touching up his eyebrows and mascara that he had put on that morning before going to work, he lightly concealed his under eyes and the small acne scars that dotted his cheekbones, powdered, and applied a generous amount of lip gloss to his lips. He was nervous that the small light in his car was deceiving him into thinking he looked better than he did, but it was too late to fix anything. He was already running late.

He stumbled out of his truck, ankles almost giving out and he could not figure out if it was a bad hop or the heels, he picked out specifically so he would not bust his ass.

“Of course, I fall,” He said to himself, “I should know that always happens when I try to look cool.”

He knew Hoseok was there the second he walked in. He did not have to see them to know they were there. That laugh was distinct and the Korean flying out of their mouth only solidified that fact. He followed the sounds to a little booth in the back of the restaurant, a small divider giving the party some privacy. Yoongi gave it to Jin, at least they would not bother the entire restaurant…hopefully.

“Hyung!” Taehyung exclaimed, his smile widening in a cute box shape, and it reminded Yoongi just how boyish he was. “You’re here!”

“I said I was coming, didn’t I?” Yoongi replied, finding a seat at the floor table.

“Well, you were late so I wasn’t sure you would show up.” Hoseok added, giving Yoongi a dirty look.

“Don’t look at me like that. I can’t control traffic or Namjoon’s bitch fits at the end of the day. I’m sorry I fucked with you OCD, though.”

“Geez,” Hoseok rolled their eyes, “What was his problem this time?”

“The whole Jungkook situation. He got pissed off that I was coming to dinner with you guys even though Kook would be here. Things escalated from there. He brought him up, too.”

“He did what?” Hoseok’s eyes widened, and slammed their drink on the table, “Are you serious? That bastard.”

“Eh, this is Joon we’re talking about. The most melodramatic person on the planet. It’s no biggie. Anyway,” Yoongi looked around, “where’s this ‘attractive’ friend of yours, Tae?”

“Oh, he went out for a smoke. He should be back in a minute.”

“You’re hooking me up with a smoker? Really? That’s gross.”

“Smoking is the dirtiest thing that boy does,” Hoseok defended, “Just give him a chance. Jimin’s your type. Small, fair, funny, sweet, and his butt is nice. He used to be a dancer before becoming a translator for advertising companies in Seoul and let me tell you… you’re going to change that tone when you see him.”

“See who?” Someone suddenly piped, making Yoongi flinch and turn his head.

He turned around and there he was. The small, fair, funny, sweet, dancing angel. His lips were full and plush, his nose small and slightly flat, but still buttoned enough to frame his face, his eyes shined a warm, chocolate brown, and his hair was a charcoal black. His skin almost glowed and not a single imperfection was insight. Yoongi suddenly felt very insecure. He was hyperaware of the coffee stains on his pants and the fact that he was wearing a five-year-old thrift store shirt with small holes in certain spots, while Jimin was dressed to the nines in the most casual way possible, black jeans, a black button-up, and some worn black dress shoes.

“Oh!” He exclaimed, and Yoongi melted at the sound of his voice, “Pardon me. I’m Jimin Park. You must be Yoongi. Hoseok has told me so much about you.”

Yoongi almost laughed out loud at the awful accent Jimin had when he spoke French, but simply smiled and shook his hand.

“I speak Korean. Don’t worry, it takes a lot more than going out for a smoke break to get me worked up.” 

He was shocked, the words falling from his lips completely backtracking from what he has just told Hoseok.Yoongi could only imagine the shit-eating grin on their face right now. I told you so. Yes, yes you did, he thought.

Jimin sighed and returned the smile, “You know, those two kept trying to tell me that you were cute, but they didn’t do the best job at explaining just how cute you actually, are.”

Seonghwa groaned, as the hospital TV, which was stuck on the news, repeated his name for the umpteenth time.

“25-year old city renowned chef Seonghwa Park was found with a gunshot wound in his shoulder in the backroom of a yacht on the pier of the East River in Flushing Meadows. Chef Park is the owner of The Majestic Dragon, with locations in Manhattan, The Bronx, and Brooklyn, with several on the way. Park was recently accused of being part of a gang, running a prominent drug ring and the murder of Raymond Carter Sr. by an anonymous tip to the city hotline. The accuser also claimed Park used leftover drug money to purchase his locales, making the purchases questionable by law. It is said his accomplice in the drug ring was 25-year old college student Hongjoong Kim, known in the public eye as underground music producer Kilo. Kim was also critically injured with a gunshot wound to the back. He is also accused of using dirty money to acquire his condo, college payments and the tuition for his sister’s private school and the Santana’s Threads Manhattan location. We’ll keep you all posted as more information is available, and we await Mr. Park and Mr. Kim’s statements once they are released from the hospital.”

“Nurse!” Seonghwa said, desperate.

A fair-skinned woman with a neat bun of chestnut brown hair waltzed in. “You called, Mr. Pa-”

“The TV. Turn it off.”

“What? But you just told me to turn it on-” She froze as Seonghwa’s picture flashed on the screen once again. “I see.” She said, clicking the device off. “There. Enough of that. Is that all? Anything else I can get you?”

“I wanna see my family.”

“Dr. Park isn’t in yet.”

“You know who I’m referring to.”

She sighed. “Mr. Park, we’ve been through this. Immediate family only while in the ICU. Your girlfriend and everyone else can come in once you’ve been transferred or discharged.”

“But they can go see Hongjoong?”

“Mr. Kim is a different case. Biologically, his immediate family are his siblings, but Ms. Davis is the mother of his child and under common law, they can be considered married. You and Ms. Carter have not been together long enough to be bestowed the same privileges.”

Seonghwa rolled his eyes, looking out the window. He wanted to see Zelie more than anything. His sister had been the only one he saw since he was admitted. His parents, after watching the news, wanted even less to do with him, although his mother did call once behind his father’s back. Seonghwa didn’t care. He wasn’t interested in getting back into his family’s good graces, he lost that hope years ago. He just wanted to see the people he truly considered him family. His sister Minseo was now on maternity leave, her baby due any day now. She canceled her baby shower when she realized Seonghwa was hospitalized but decided to celebrate after the baby was born. Seonghwa appreciated her being there, confirming that he would attend as long as he was in good health.

The nurse sighed. “Don’t get your hopes up, but I’ll see what I can do about visitors. In the meantime, are you hungry? Thirsty?”

“I’m fine.”

“You didn’t eat your breakfast earlier. Maintenance told me.”

He shrugged, not meeting her gaze. “Hospital waffles aren’t really appetizing. Neither is hospital meatloaf or whatever you’re gonna bring me.”

The nurse rolled her eyes. “You’re lucky I like you, Mr. Park.” She said, closing the door.

Seonghwa and Hongjoong were in surgery for hours, the bullets in highly critical areas. Seonghwa’s was in his shoulder, dangerously close to his neck, while Hongjoong’s was in his back, just centimeters from his spine. Doctors were afraid that one wrong move could permanently leave Hongjoong paralyzed. Thankfully, the bullets were removed and the pair were recovering nicely. Zelie had tried multiple times to see Seonghwa but was rejected every time by his doctor. She called him almost every hour, but Seonghwa was dying to see her. He had not seen her since that night. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t a little jealous that HJ could see Santana as much as he pleased. She went home with Orion and Minjoon a couple days ago but came almost every day to see Hongjoong.

“Well, Mr. Park, looks like you owe me some Lo Mein when the restaurant opens back up.” The nurse said, opening the door. “I spoke with the doctor, and he said as long as the immediate family confirmed they would not be visiting you, the rights could be transferred off. So I called your parents, and sure enough, I was able to make magic happen!”

In walked Zelie, Minjoon, Soojin, and Santana carrying Orion. Hongjoong, who was advised to stay off his feet for the few weeks after surgery, wheeled into the room on the wheelchair the hospital provided.

“Thanks, Nurse Jackie. I appreciate it.” Seonghwa said, hugging Zelie.

“Like I said, when I get that Lo Mein, I want extra shrimp and soy sauce.” She said, smiling. “I’ll leave you to catch up with your family.” She winked, closing the door.

“I like her. Give her two Lo Meins.” Zelie said, cozying up in Seonghwa’s arms.

“Well, honorary big brother, how you feeling?” Minjoon asked, approaching the bed.

“I’ve been better, but I wouldn’t be here without you. I don’t remember much after getting shot, but I do remember you pressing your shirt into my shoulder to stop the bleeding. Thank you.”

“if I had to, I’d do it a thousand times again.”  Minjoon smiled.

“Where is my godchild? Bring him to me.” Seonghwa said, extending his arms out.

Santana placed Orion in his arms, who stared up at Seonghwa with wide, brown eyes.

“Hey, little guy,” Seonghwa whispered, smiling when Orion seemed to smile at his words.

“Looks like he likes you, Hwa.” Santana said.

“He better. I already furnished his room.” Seonghwa replied, making everyone laugh.

“I’m so excited to have a little brother!” Soojin said.

“Soojin, sweetie, Orion is your nephew. He’s your brother’s son.” Seonghwa explained.

“But…he’s little and I’m little. Doesn’t that make him my brother?” Soojin asked, confused.

Hongjoong laughed. “She’ll get it eventually. How are you feeling, though? Really?”

“Like I want out of this damn bed. How’s everything with the court case?” Seonghwa asked Zelie.

Given that Zelie was the last to interact with her brother before his death, she was a prime suspect. However, with the large number of workers in the room at the time of the death, those who survived the bloodbath agreed to testify in her favor in exchange for a lighter sentence. Everyone agreed that Zelie never meant for it to happen, but she wrestled him in self-defense and as a last resort and wasn’t even the one who pulled the trigger. The trial was far from over, but Zelie was optimistic.

“It’s been lengthy, but it’s going well. It’s not like I wanted him to die. I just couldn’t stand back and watch him kill you. Boyfriend or not, he’d be taking an innocent life all because of a vendetta.”

“Thank you. I mean that.” Seonghwa said, pulling her closer.

“One thing’s for sure, like father like son. It’s sad they had to go the same way.” Santana said.

“Somethings just can’t be avoided,” Hongjoong said. “I spoke to an attorney the other day; I invited him to my room. The city investigated the money we used for our initial purchases and while it was indeed money that had not been in circulation for years, given the circumstances, the court has agreed to grant us clemency. All we have to do is pay a fine. It’s hefty but at this point anything that keeps me out of jail.”

“Seriously? Babe that’s amazing!” Santana exclaimed.

He nodded. “They said we had already suffered enough, and the purchases happened years ago. The statute of limitations is almost up, and all of our recent purchases have been by the books. Everything worked out in our favor. You should be able to reopen the restaurants whenever you’re ready.”

Seonghwa nodded. “We came out the other side unscathed once again. I’m starting to think we’re indestructible.”

“Let’s not find out.” Hongjoong rolled his eyes, making everyone laugh. “I’m actually glad we’re all here, though. There’s something I’ve been meaning to do. I’ve been thinking about it for a while, and with everything that’s happened, I think sooner is better than later.”

“Babe, what are you talking about?” Santana asked, confused.

Hongjoong turned to Minjoon. “Did you bring it?” He asked, and Minjoon nodded, fishing a small velour box from his pocket.

“Oh my God,” Santana said, her voice barely a whisper.

“Santana, baby. I initially planned this to be happening at a place way different, but I know you were never one for fancy scenery as long as it came from the heart, so that’s what I’m doing. I met you almost 5 years ago. I was young and a knucklehead. I didn’t know the first thing about treating a woman right or being grown. But when I met you, I realized I would have to man up quick or you’d be gone. I couldn’t have that. You’ve been with me through thick and thin, even when I was doing shit you knew would get me in trouble. You never ditched me, not when the police barged into my apartment, not when I was sitting up in Sing Sing, not when I was released, not when I started taking music seriously, and not when I was almost paralyzed. You were by my side through it all. Now that we have our beautiful son, I want to do the same. Be by your side no matter what. Never leave you ever again, and never have you worried I’m not coming home.” He opened the tiny box, revealing a beautifully adorned gold band with a large, square-cut rock at the center. “Santana Jarelle Davis, I can’t imagine spending the rest of my life with any other woman besides the one in front of me. I’d be honored if you gave me the chance. Will you marry me?”

Santana nodded frantically, the entire room looking like a mosaic through her tears. “A million times, yes. I love you so much.” She said, kissing Hongjoong as he placed the ring on her finger.

“ACTUALLY,” Soojin interrupted, “I was on your lap, so that makes me the person in front of you.” She said, folding her arms.

“Nice try. I said, WOMAN. Not booger-eating little girl.” Hongjoong said, tickling her.

“That was ONE time!” Soojin said, laughing.

Just then, the doctor walked in.

“I was wondering where you had wandered off to, Mr. Kim.” He said, entering the room. “Looks like you’re getting around just fine without being hooked to the IV. How’s your back?”

“It hurts from time to time, but nothing excruciating.”

Nodding, the doctor turned to Seonghwa. “And you, Mr. Park? How’s your shoulder?”

“Better. I can move my neck freely now.”

“I can see that. Well, you men seem to have healed remarkably fast. It’s like you’re not human. If you’re truly feeling better, and nothing comes up in this morning’s x-rays, I’ll process your discharge papers and you’ll be free to go.”

“Thank GOD,” Seonghwa shouted, making everyone laugh.

“Careful, Mr. Park. Don’t want us to magically find something to keep you here. A rectal exam, perhaps?” The doctor asked.

Seonghwa laughed nervously. “You don’t mean that, right doc? DOC?” He shouted when the doctor didn’t answer. He turned to Zelie.

“GET ME OUT OF HERE.”

*2 years later*

“Alright Mitch, I’m heading home for the day,” Seonghwa called out, walking through the back kitchen of the restaurant.

“Alright, boss. Be safe.” Mitch answered, getting started on another Bibimbap. “Tell the Missus I said hello and we miss her here at work.”

“I will. Oh, and before I forget. The woman with the brown hair and scrubs on is getting two House Special Lo Meins, on the house.”

“Got it!”

Seonghwa walked out to the dining area, where Nurse Jackie was standing. “Took you long enough to come redeem your food.”

She shrugged. “What’s the rush? You owed me no matter what. Didn’t feel like cooking, so here I am.”

Seonghwa laughed, his voice booming against the walls. “Well, should you not want to cook again, this location is much closer to the hospital. That’s why I chose it.”

She put a hand over her heart. “My hero. Go ahead, I know you’re heading home. Don’t wanna keep you too long. Good night, Chef Park.”

“Good Night, Nurse Jackie,” Seonghwa said, making his way out of the crowded restaurant. Despite the controversy, die-hard fans of the restaurant couldn’t wait to go back, and others who had yet to try the food were even more inclined, causing lots of traffic, especially on a Friday like today. Seonghwa hopped into his car and made his way home.

The clemency went through, and the fine was half of their monthly earnings for the next year. The boys were more than willing to cough up the cash if it meant they could resume their normal lives. The Coca Twins skipped town when they realized they failed again and the boys weren’t going to jail. So, they changed their names and were never heard from again. Despite everything, Zelie paid for RayRay’s burial, figuring he deserved a peaceful resting place at the very least. One-Eye was laid to rest but some of his men, his death being real this time. Lil Mike quit drug dealing once he saw what being involved in the game did to HJ and Hwa. He brought his mom home from the hospital and went back to school. To everyone’s surprise, he had a knack for baking and decided to open his own bakery. To show his gratitude, he made Hongjoong and Santana’s wedding cake free of charge.

Hongjoong and Santana’s wedding was held the summer after the shooting, and luckily the boys were fully healed by then. It was a small ceremony, with Seonghwa, Zelie, Soojin, Minjoon and a few of Santana’s employees and family. The girl Minjoon went on that date with ended up becoming his girlfriend, so she was invited to. Soojin had a little guy friend from her soccer team she begged to let come, so he and his family were invited as well. To Hongjoong’s surprise, Seonghwa was able to schedule a video chat with Chungho, who congratulated the young couple and was able to see his grandchild and Soojin, who he had not seen for years. Everyone at the reception was in awe at the fact that Zelie effortlessly caught the bouquet, with Hongjoong teasing Seonghwa, stating that it was fate. Seonghwa didn’t think much of it until he proposed just a year later. Granted, it was during their lunch break at work, but Zelie accepted nonetheless.

“Lucy I’m home!” Seonghwa shouted, walking into the plush, luxury condominium. When he was discharged from the hospital, Seonghwa realized that if he planned to be with Zelie for the long run, his tiny studio wouldn’t do. So, he packed up all his things (sans the leather couch, to Zelie’s satisfaction) and bought a condo, not too far from Hongjoong’s building.

“Ricky, darling!” Zelie shouted, running to the door, kissing Seonghwa tenderly on the lips.

“Do you two have to greet each other like that every night?” Minseo asked, laughing. Her son, Minhyuk, right behind her. After being released, Seonghwa kept his word to attend Minseo’s celebration once the baby was born. She chose Minhyuk since it was similar to Minjoon. She said had it not been for Minjoon, she’d never have run into Seonghwa that day. Their relationship was far from perfect, but they’d been patching things up pretty well. His father had yet to speak to him, although his mother sent him a housewarming gift when she heard from Minseo that he was moving. Seonghwa learned to live with his father’s blatant disapproval and was grateful his mother was warming up to him again on her own accord, although he doubted they’d ever cross paths again. Ever since their reunion, Minseo spent most weekends with Seonghwa and Zelie.

“We don’t HAVE to, but where’s the fun in that?” Seonghwa asked, smiling. “Hey, sis.” He hugged Minseo. “And you! How you doin, big man?” He picked up Minhyuk, throwing him up in the air and causing him to laugh.

Cries were heard from the living room.

“Uh oh, someone’s jealous.” Zelie laughed.

“Now why would my princess get jealous? She knows she’s the apple of my eye!” Seonghwa said, reaching into the baby swing, picking up the month-old baby girl. “You know that, right Zelig?” He said, the curly-haired, caramel-skinned baby halting her cries immediately.

When they officially got engaged, Seonghwa and Zelie…couldn’t keep their hands off of each other, to say the least. The next thing they knew, Zelie was late. Seonghwa was ecstatic…once he regained consciousness after Zelie told him.

“It’s crazy how you had a kid with a head full of hair. Minhyuk was bald for MONTHS.” Minseo said, running a hand through the curly locks.

“Yeah, that heartburn was a bitch,” Zelie said, immediately turning to Minhyuk. “Don’t repeat that.” She said, causing the siblings to laugh.

Seonghwa kissed Zelie’s cheek. “I guess it’s true what you said.”

“What’s that?” Zelie asked.

“I was just a work in progress.” He said, thinking about his friends, business, sister, and the kids, even one of his own. And of course, his beautiful fiancée. “And for the first time in my life, I feel complete.”

Timely stories, inspiring legions of medical students and empowering women (and its cast): showrunner Krista Vernoff and star Ellen Pompeo and the rest of the cast talk with The Hollywood Reporter about breaking 'ER's' record as TV's longest-running medical drama.

Two weeks before Grey's Anatomy's March 2005 series debut, series star Ellen Pompeo thought her ABC medical drama was, in her words, "dead in the water."

"The day the network changed our title to Complications it was like someone died in here," leading lady Pompeo tells The Hollywood Reporter from the show's L.A. set during an early January visit.

The title change would not stick. Two days later, ABC would revert back to Grey's Anatomy and, now, 14 years and 332 episodes later, Grey's Anatomy, with Thursday's installment, will break ER's status as TV's longest-running primetime medical drama.

It's a feat that creator Shonda Rhimes and showrunner Krista Vernoff, who spent the first seven seasons working under the former, never expected during the show's early days.

"After we produced 10 of our 12 episodes that first year, I went away to make a pilot and my assistant stayed behind in L.A. and she called me and said, 'They're making us pack up our offices.' They made us move out. They didn't think we were getting a season two," says Vernoff, who worked with former ER showrunner John Wells on Showtime's Shameless before being hand-picked by Rhimes to take over Grey's in season 14. "We owe a huge debt of gratitude to ER — without it, Grey's wouldn't exist. … We have surprised everybody — and ourselves. The staying power is amazing."

And the Seattle-set drama really does have some staying power. Seriously. It ranks as ABC's No. 1 series for the 2018-19 broadcast season with an impressive average of a 3.1 rating among the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic. Grey's is also, sources say, one of Netflix's top performing acquired series. The streamer has helped bring in a new legion of viewers that further propels first-run originals on ABC. What's more, Grey's has global reach: It is the key asset among all the Shondaland shows that have been licensed in more than 235 territories worldwide and dubbed in more than 67 languages. Grey's remains a top performer for foreign broadcasters and has been adapted into localized versions in Mexico, Colombia and Turkey. The series remains a top-performing U.S. drama abroad.

"It's a $4 billion business and it's everywhere in the world," says Pompeo, who ranks as TV's highest-paid leading lady on a primetime drama series with $20 million per season (plus points of the show's lucrative back end and producing fees). Adds Vernoff: "Shonda says I'm leading a multibillion-dollar worldwide corporation but if I think about that for too long, I won't be able to get out of bed!"

Global Reach Every single one of the current 11 Grey's series regulars has a story about the impact of their show. Most of them include anecdotes from viewers — and their children — about entering the medical field and becoming surgeons and nurses because of Grey's. "Graduating female surgeons have gone through the roof since Grey's Anatomy started," says Caterina Scorsone, who is the only (primetime, live-action) actor to start on a spinoff as series regular and wind up holding the same status on the original series.

Kevin McKidd — who was originally cast as a love interest for Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang and has now appeared in more Grey's episodes than the Killing Eve star did during her tenure — was recognized a few years ago on a dirt road in the "middle of nowhere in Mozambique," where he was helping a doctor friend improve conditions at a local hospital. "To see that in the farthest reaches of a very poor and struggling country there was this show that inspires people was pretty emotional," he says.

TV legend Debbie Allen, who exec produces, directs and has a recurring role, says she's now approached more about her time on Grey's than her iconic part on Fame. "I was in Cuba and accosted by these young girls who were screaming, 'Katherine Avery!'" she says with a laugh.

Giacomo Gianniotti, who has been a regular since season 12, is now repeatedly spotted in his home of Italy. "Because I'm Italian, there's this pride — like one of us made it to America and made it on our show that we watch," he says. "I traveled to Kenya doing some volunteer work this summer and a lot of people approached me to say they love Grey's. The reach is just huge."

Sums up Pompeo, who had an impact off-screen when she fought for her record-breaking salary: "Everywhere I go I get, 'My daughter is a surgeon because of you.'"

Empowering From the Start Grey's was the first TV series creator Rhimes got on the air. (ABC previously passed on a Rhimes drama about female war correspondents). Grey's broke out in season two and became a cultural phenomenon, contributing terms like "vajayjay" and "McDreamy" to pop culture. Grey's has also birthed two spinoffs — Private Practice, which ran for six seasons and 111 episodes — and Station 19, which is currently in its second season on ABC. The success of Grey's has led to other opportunities for Rhimes, who really broke out with ABC's political soap Scandal. That series built on Rhimes' penchant for color blind casting on Grey's. (Former star Isaiah Washington nearly played the McDreamy part that went to Patrick Dempsey, while network execs expected Oh's role of Cristina to be played by a white actress.)

"When they had me come in to read for the role of chief of surgery, I hadn't seen an African-American in that kind of role before," says James Pickens Jr., who remembers sitting next to Rhimes at the 2005 upfronts when she hoped to get five or seven episodes on the air. "Grey's is more than just entertainment. Shonda always wanted to make sure that the show impacted the landscape in a way that we hadn't seen before on TV. I like to think that Grey's had a big part in how the industry casts shows."

Grey's has launched directing careers for stars including showrunner Vernoff, Pompeo (who made her debut in season 14), Jesse Williams, McKidd and Wilson, the latter of whom helmed Thursday's record-breaking hour. "The atmosphere here is if you want to try something, you're encouraged," says Wilson, who along with Pompeo, Justin Chambers and Pickens is one of the four remaining original stars.

For Williams, that outlook has also afforded him the opportunity to build up his own businesses. "Grey's has made a home for me so that I can launch three tech companies and can go on speaking tours and live a life. A lot of that has to do with being on a show that's run by women and people who can actually multitask," says Williams, who will direct again this season.

Grey's has also created a safe space for its (many!) pregnant stars, who have always been afforded job security. Wilson, for her part, thought she'd be written out of the series when she told Rhimes of her pregnancy early on in the show's run. Instead, it was written into Bailey's season two storyline (and the character's son is now old enough to have been featured in a season 14 episode exploring unconscious bias).

"Instead of shunning it and hoping you don't get pregnant, I watch producers actively encourage all of our actors to have a family," Williams says. "That is the formula and secret for longevity: feeding into a healthy life and happiness instead of running from it or trying to press you out of it."

"The most empowering storyline for me has been to portray a woman who has lost the love of their life and what does life look like having to continue on after losing the right side of your body? Did his departure mean I no longer mattered or my magic and chemistry was somehow gone? "When Meredith Grey speaks, people listen," says Vernoff, who recently signed a big overall deal with ABC Studios. "There is so much darkness and so much to be frightened of and this show has so much impact. People have grown up with Meredith. So, my goal is to have a voice on the planet and to have an impact: to change hearts and minds."  

Vernoff is aware that she is already achieving that impact. The showrunner — who has been outspoken about timely issues surrounding Hollywood including the #MeToo movement, salary parity and more — recalled a recent conversation with Rhimes in which the Grey's creator shared a story from a makeup artist who noted that his brother is a Korean gay man and was moved to see himself represented on screen. Other highlights include hearing from a current Grey's writers PA who wrote a letter sharing a story about experiencing his father's death at the age of 16 and finding solace in a storyline with George (T.R. Knight) and Cristina talking about the "Dead Dad's Club."

"To put my painful loss on TV and help other people through that is deeply meaningful to me," Vernoff says of the origin of that storyline.

As for what comes next, Vernoff did not want to write in a wink and nod to ER — fitting given her relationship with Wells on Shameless and the fact that the former NBC medical drama was one of the series that made her want to be a TV writer in the first place. Instead, Vernoff opted to do something that Grey's had never done before.

"In the 300th episode we did a huge number of winks at the show's history and beginnings. I don't know if ERdid it or not but what I came up with was a no-medicine episode," Vernoff says of the Grey's first. Adds McCreary: "We're in this party scene and I keep waiting for somebody to need a tracheotomy! But instead it's great because it feels like a real celebration of these characters."

Meaningful Milestone As the episode doubles as a celebration of sorts of the record-breaking milestone, the stars all share the same refrain when asked about the significance of doing a whopping 332 hours of television. All involved recall their initial shock that the series few thought would work has become the powerhouse franchise it is today.

"The fact that we're still the network's No. 1 drama and can stay afloat in this landscape after 15 years is incredible," Pompeo says. "It's also incredible in a larger sense because it's something that I resisted [and] that I said I would never do."

For his part, Williams has now appeared in more than two-thirds of Grey's Anatomy's total episodes after first joining the cast as recurring player Jackson Avery in season six. It's a jarring fact for the actor who initially thought the show would only be around for only a few more seasons when he first signed on. He now scoffs at those who use Grey's Anatomy as a punchline.

"That response — 'Oh, Grey's is still on' — at first, I took offense to it but now I don't because it's not really about our show; it's about the business because shows don't last that long," says Williams, whose tech companies are all inspired by the message of visibility he sees every day on Grey's. "I'm really proud of what we do here — I wouldn't be here this long if I wasn't."

The Future While Grey's has not officially been renewed for its 16th season, it's considered a lock as Pompeo's deal covers the 2019-2020 broadcast season. Pompeo, too, knows she has experienced something special in her decade and a half on Grey's, where she has been afforded a rare ability to evolve Meredith as a character while growing as an actor and producer. "I've come full circle on this show from being an actor with no voice, no say and terrified to speak up or advocate for myself in any way," Pompeo says. "I'm now someone who is heard here and who has a say here. I'm one of my bosses and that's an unusual situation for an actress in Hollywood — to get to say what I want and what I don't. If I left the show, I don't think I'd have that same situation anywhere."

That's not to say Pompeo hasn't toyed with the idea of leaving Grey's over the years. The actress has been candid many times about experiencing the nagging pull many stars on veteran series experience as they consider leaving and taking on new and different roles. Meanwhile, Pickens is in talks for a new deal that would see him continue on as Grey's Anatomy's elder statesman Richard Webber. ("Nothing is solid yet but more than likely, I'll be here," he says.) Pickens adds the thought of going after Gunsmoke or Law & Order: SVU — the latter of which will break the former's record as TV's longest-running primetime drama series when it is renewed for its 21st season — remains "intriguing." Wilson, for her part, has one goal in mind now that Grey's has snapped ER's streak. "I would love to be a starter and a finisher of a thing," says the original star, whose contract is also up this season. "When the show is ready for that last shot, I want to be in that."

Elijah Stephens said he first realized he was a boy when he was six years old. 

But it wasn’t until 22 years later, after a 14-hour operation, that he said he could finally feel like the man he knew he always was.

Under the operating room lights, surgeons worked — slicing and swapping tissue, disconnecting and reconnecting parts — all to create something completely new: a penis.

Stephens, 28, of Magnolia, recently became New Jersey’s first transgender patient to undergo a phalloplasty in a female-to-male genital reassignment surgery, receiving both a penis as well as a scrotum, according to the Rutgers Center for Transgender Health.

The surgery occurred earlier this year at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.

Stephens says he was astonished by the results.

“I was overjoyed … everything was perfect,” Stephens told NJ Advance Media.

Gender confirmation surgeries are on the rise with more than 3,200 performed in the U.S. in 2016, a roughly 20-percent increase since the previous year.

And, nearly 1,500 of the surgeries in 2016 were transmasculine procedures like the one Stephens had, according to data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The increase is mainly due to greater access to the surgeries in recent years.

To give Stephens a penis, doctors took the sensory nerves of the forearm tissue and attached it to the sensory nerves of the clitoris, while his scrotum was made from his labia.

The surgery was done by Dr. Jonathan Keith, founder and director of the Rutgers Center for Transgender Health, who led the 15-member surgery team.

Stephens said he had taken a chance on Keith, who, despite studying under a renowned sexual reassignment surgeon in Belgium, had never performed this type of procedure in practice before.

It took three years of planning, researching and staging every aspect of the procedure.

Since the operation, Stephens has been able to urinate standing up and achieve an orgasm (which is still neurologically a female orgasm).

After the surgery, however, Stephens had to get used to some things he didn’t expect, like learning how to walk and sit with this new, awkward piece of hardware now suddenly attached to his body. He said he had to get used to the weight of it. He even called upon his brothers at one point to get their input.

“I didn’t account for that,” he said, laughing.

Stephens, who began his transition in 2014, said he had battled years of depression, insecurity, relationship issues and thoughts of suicide.

There was always this gnawing feeling inside him, he says, this hatred of himself, his body.

“There were times I felt like killing myself was the only option for me,” he said.

And challenges persist even today, particularly at work where he’s encountered ridicule and been the subject of gossip from co-workers who remember him before his transition, reopening old wounds.

But, today he said he can actually look in the mirror and say he likes the person he sees.

“I love who I am,” he said. “Because I didn’t like who I was, and to see how far I’ve come; that’s what keeps me grounded.”

In several more months, Stephens said he’ll undergo another procedure to receive balloon implants that will allow him to get an erection.

“Life begins after surgery. My life didn’t start until this was done. And now I’ve hit the ground running,” he said.

Stephens started at a local aviation school last week, something he’s always wanted to do. Something he said he may never have gone for if not for the surgery.

“The future is really, really bright,” he said.

A see-through shell

I remember while in LSR, when I was just 18, I would have a lot of difficulty asking a friend to go to Amar Colony with me. That was just the local market. I was a Patna born girl in a Delhi hostel with a friend circle comprising of girls from Doon, Mayo, Loretto, etc. I am not sure if I had an insecurity about that then. Maybe I did. Maybe that’s what set in a fear of rejection in me. What if I wasn’t cool enough to hang out with. I didn’t know their music, their food, their culture. But I adapted real quick. I know that insecurity died a fast death. But that fear of rejection has stayed with me till date.

Professionally, I can handle rejection very well because I know how to disassociate my skills from me sense of being. But personally, this fear of rejection has probably hindered any real close bonds in my life. I can give without asking, without making anyone feel obliged or indebted. But I do not know how to ask. 

I get cold feet every time I travel. Because I will have to ask someone to pet sit. So I travel only when it is unavoidable. I feel hopelessly helpless when I fall sick. Because God forbid I have to ask someone to do things for me. So I have strengthened my immunity such that I don’t fall sick. When I had an appendix surgery, I was so alone that I got out of the hospital after 2 nights. Because I couldn’t ask anyone to stay with my dogs. I couldn’t bend over for a few weeks after that, to feed them. I figured how to slowly slide down the wall.

More recently, when I had another ankle injury, I couldn’t ask anyone to take me to the doctor. I got myself an auto, got a cast set, came back and then cried. A few years back, I had a numbing nerve pain on my right side. My hands were literally numb. But I couldn’t ask anyone to take me to the hospital. I drove myself. I must have cried inside the MRI machine. It’s a scary place anyway. I was just hoping throughout the drive that I don’t lose complete motor controls since that would be dangerous and irresponsible.

I don’t ask because the very few times I have asked, I have been met with rejections. The same cast time, I asked my shared pet parent friend to give all the dogs a shower. He said something so stupid, that I thought he could have just said a respectable no. I have shifted houses alone. I have gone for Christmas lunch alone. I have watched movies alone. I have gone through a divorce alone. I realise all of it wasn’t macho or the independent woman vibe. I needed help. But I was too scared to ask. And I am just trying to understand why.

The biggest one of these hesitations is to ask someone to hangout with me if I want company. I do not. Not even my girl friends. I wait for people to ask me. So whenever someone does, I am almost always free!

For a good part of my recent love life, if I can call it that, I was reduced to a place where I would ask. So many times. And was met with rejection every time. My self esteem had dropped to such a low that I had no shame in literally begging this man to spend time with me. Most often, that begging didn’t end too well for me in ways more than just the rejection.

That has now scarred me so deeply that every time I ask another man to hang out and he says no, I get triggered. I feel my self esteem get crushed, when it need not. It was probably just a harmless ‘let’s hangout another time’. But I cannot handle that. I don’t know how to.

I have arrived at this chicken and egg situation where I do not know whether I do not have any close relationships because I maintain this distance or it’s because I don’t have close relationships, I have become this distant. Maybe I never give a chance to anyone to get close because I never open up or get that comfortable with them to feel that we can take liberties of any sort. Or perhaps because of no close relationships, I don’t know that being a little comfortable and pushy with people is acceptable if you love each other. So I stay at an arm’s length.

I have also observed that this behaviour is most exaggerated for me in the case of men I might want to be romantically inclined towards, followed by female friends followed by male friends. I am the most comfortable blurring politeness boundaries with my male friends. Funny thing - I have mostly had male friends. So is it because they made it easy, or I had more of them and so I got used to it? But with men I might be interested in, it goes back to a dark place of self doubt. I have never asked my family for help either. They have almost never seen me need anything, or be weak in anyway in the 18 years I have lived away. Not because I haven’t been so, but because I have hidden it from them.

I don’t know how to fix it. All I do is try. I give people the benefit of doubt by hoping they do not reject. Slowly, I take a step forward. But once again, I get rejected and then I just get pushed 3 steps behind. It takes me that much longer to ask the next person or next time.

I realise I am in a shell which is transparent. I make it seem like it’s all there for people to see. And hence, I can make most people feel real close to me. But they can’t reach inside. It’s broadly inaccessible. I have made it so. My self preservation skills have reached such a level that I would rather be alone and distant in that shell than be hurt. And now I worry that I don’t know how to get out of that shell myself.
