Phone Call: Birthday Girl, Vita Dies

Ortho: Happy Birthday!

Vita: My, what a welcome surprise. 

Ortho: But you do not sound surprised at all, Vita Dies. Your tone and pitch are within normal parameters. 

Vita: Indeed? Then perhaps I have simply exaggerated it.

Ortho: Eh? Why is that?

Vita: Who knows~

Still, I am pleased to have managed to catch your call before any of my girls have spotted me. It would have quite difficult if they had taken that opportunity to douse me.

Ortho: Douse you? Are you in danger? Should I-

Vita: Worry not. ‘Tis but a small tradition our dorm has incorporated. Every year we would concoct a potion during our alchemy class and await the day of birth of our dear Prefect to drench her in it. A small reminder that it is by our grace that she still reigns as leader.

Ortho: But since last year, you have been Prefect, haven’t you?  

Vita: Indeed, it be so.

Ortho: Then couldn’t you put a stop to it, if you dislike it so much?

Vita: But whoever said that I do not enjoy this? ‘Tis a marvelous bonding opportunity for our dear girls who have the chance to unite against a tyrannical overseer and reaffirm their independence. ‘Tis rather romantic, would you not agree?

Ortho: Mm, I suppose it’s like playing a game of tag. You’ve always liked those sort of games since we were little. Since you have always been a good escape artist!

Vita:... To think you remember so much.

Ortho: Vita Dies? Is something wrong?

Vita: Hm? No, I was merely talking to myself. Let us discuss more pleasant notions, shall we?

Chapter II

Ortho: Have you received the present Big Brother and I have sent you?

Vita: I have. ‘Tis quite a fine work, if I might so bold to say as such. Let my husband know that I send my gratitude. He has truly outdone himself this time. Though he has always left me rather breathless with his skill in machinery.

Ortho: I’m glad! Big Brother has worked quite hard on this because he wanted you to enjoy it! Ah! I said too much...

Vita: Worry not, for I do not intend to reveal this to your brother. 

To tell you the truth I have figured as much myself, so it does not come as a surprise. 

Ortho: You have? That’s impressive!

Vita: No, not truly. I have mentioned to him a few months back that I required a more efficient manner of translating Ancient Languages. The Dies grimoire is quite extensive as you are aware. It takes months to translate as little as a chapter and my research has had to suffer from this quite a bit.

I was expecting perhaps a compiled dictionary or something of the sort. But a device that automatically analyzes each word and offers possible solutions... and all with this small device...

Ortho: Big Brother is a genius when it comes to machines so this is his forte!

Vita: How cute. You do not seem to understand.

‘Tis not simply the mechanical marvel that impresses me, but rather the stored knowledge within. I simply wonder how many weeks he must have poured over the documents I have sent him for digitalization...

Ortho: Vita Dies? Can you hear me? Are you still there?

Vita: Hm, of course. I was simply lost in a daydream. My husband can be quite endearing at times. 

Chapter III

Vita: Well, then I shall see you this end of the week.

Ortho: That means you’ll be coming to visit us home?

Vita: Certainly. ‘Tis the duty of any bride to pay respects to her in-laws. I shall not bring shame upon either of our families.

Ortho: You’ve always been very attentive to such things, Vita Dies. I wish Big Brother would follow your example.

Vita: Indeed. It would be preferable if my husband began to think of his position as future heir a little more seriously. But until that day comes I shall not hesitate to carry this responsibility on my shoulders.

And ‘tis high time for my dear Larna to reunite with his dear Father. He has missed him terribly. And so has my dear husband, I am certain.

Ortho: It’s true that Big Brother is really attached to Larna! The two are inseparable when they’re together. I wish I could play with him myself...

Vita: It cannot be helped. We cannot risk your parts being damaged by my dear Larna’s strength. 

Ortho: I understand. Big Brother says the same thing...

Vita: ‘Tis indeed regrettable- Ah. It seems I must take my leave.

Ortho: Did something happen?

Vita: I have been spotted by my ruffians, and thus must find a way to escape.

Ortho: I understand. Good luck, Vita Dies! I wish you once again Happy Birthday.

Vita: My sincerest gratitude, little Ortho.

for some actual bsd context characters consistently keep *not* dying against all odds or getting resurrected through relatively plausible means, so it’s probably good that you dropped it or it would’ve kept annoying you

the poll is about an arc in which literally the two most important characters currently present are poisoned and it’s set up so that one of them will die while the other gets the antidote, but i don’t think anyone at all is expecting either of them to die, or others present for that matter, so once again some stretched out death dodging

oh gotcha, thanks for the heads up! sounds about right, i expected as much - was just surprised by the poll options seemingly taking itself seriously, thats all.

for what it's worth, i don't think BSD is a bad story - it just wasn't the kind of story I'd enjoy. the bitterness in how i talk about the series comes from disappointed expectations - but that's on me for assigning misplaced expectations in the first place. if i pick up a book after getting excited for its blurb thinking its a thriller, but then get disappointed learning that it's a different genre, that doesn't mean the book itself must be bad, yknow?
